Shinobi For 3DS Turns Missiles Into Platforms

By Spencer . May 26, 2011 . 8:55am

Griptonite Games was given the task of re-imagining Shinobi… again. The studio decided on a 2.5D side-scrolling action game where players leap on missiles to reach a slice a helicopter and fight enemies on the wings of a flying plane.

Not seen in the trailer are unlockable achievements, challenges, and Streetpass support.

“For years the fans have been asking for a new Shinobi,” said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing of Sega West. “With Shinobi on Nintendo 3DS we are able to answer their prayers and bring this legendary series to the next level.”

Is this the Shinobi revival you’ve been waiting for? If so, the wait for Shinobi isn’t that long. Sega plans to release the in late September in North America and Europe.

I don’t know, from that trailer it looks a bit stiff.

At first I was hoping for the PS2 style game, but now I’m good with this. If anyone has seen Muramasa Demon Blade in 3D. Then you know how cool this game can look on the 3DS. As long as the gameplay is tight, and level designs are decent. Then I’m so there.

    • Guest

       I’d rather the PS2 game myself. Bummer…

  • RagnaXBL

Why do all 3DS games look like crap? (cept res evil, MGS & KH 3D)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

What? SSFIV looks awesome, so does Pilot Wings. The art direction for this game looks great too.

    • Suicunesol

Do Dead or Alive, One Piece, and Starfox look like crap?

    • kylehyde

Why some people say this phrase everytime when they saw a game that looks bad when there are already many 3DS games like SSFIV DOA:D; One piece, Starfox, Resident Evil the mercenaries, RE: Revelations and some more that look great?

I agree that this game looks very half baked (if not less baked than that), but not for that reason you can say that every 3DS looks like this, all depends on the effords made by the developers.

      • RagnaXBL

But thats exactly my point, devs just aren’t taking the 3DS seriously at all. There are just too many “half baked games” on the 3DS for my liking. when i look at the new “naruto game on psp then i look at the one on 3DS it just makes you wonder how the hell do devs go about this. its obviously not a hardware problem because we have games like SSFIV DOA:D; One piece, Resident Evil the mercenaries, RE: Revelations (not star fox, star fox still looks like crap IMO) 99% of the PSP game library looks better than what we have on 3DS, why is that :/ ???

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

The 3DS just came out. Aren’t you overreacting a little? Give it some time to breathe and come out with some games.

        • kylehyde

Hold your horses, I think that you are exaggerating a lot the ratios. I agree that most of the first batch for the 3DS doesn’t look good, but the games that the look great and are well worked, certainly look better than many psp games. Also as @facebook-749504598:disqus  pointed, the 3DS just came out, it will take some time until the developers can use it in a apprpopiate way

        • ninjaonizuka

the psp been out for awhile now so devs got used to it now they can go crazy wiff graphics also when the 3ds gets to this point u will change ur opinion definitely but anyways doesnt it look better with the 3d? idk i havent tried the 3ds yet :<

          • Exkaiser

It doesn’t look particularly better in 3D, perhaps a little more vivid, but things typically look better in person than in trailers anyways.

        • Suicunesol

Good-looking games take time to make. 3DS has been out on the market for 2 months. It hasn’t had the time the PSP had, and developers are still exploring possibilities on the system.

Also, are you seriously using a Naruto game as a standard for graphics? Games based on popular anime typically don’t look that great.

  • vasil ddz

Umm….i was expeting something much better.I think the genesis versions are a lot better. And more important, they look smoother.

  • Arcm

As long as it captures what was great about Shinobi 2 and 3 I’ll love it. I loved both ps2 games as well but they are defiantly of a different style of game.

If Yuzo Koshiro was doing the music again, this would be an instant buy for me.

  • Advent_Andaryu

I was hoping this would be more like Shinobi on the PS2.

  • neo_firenze

Looks perfectly fine to me, I don’t get the complaints at all.  Nice and colorful, and looks to have appropriate fluidity and speed (maybe a little faster than the 2D classics).

And the attention to respecting the series history in the trailer is a good sign that they are keeping the Shinobi legacy in mind – as are the references to the past games with horse riding, helicopter fighting, screen clearing ninjutsu, etc.

This is going on my “interested” list for sure.

Looks okay to me too, we’ve seen the handheld do better but doesn’t look like a turn off to me in art direction.  Keep in mind I’m not a long time Shinobi fan to be very judgemental on gameplay or art direction for the series.

After just finishing off Shinobi PS2 when this got announced I am on the same boat that wanted more tate (though I haven’t played Nightshade yet) but I”m fine with this gameplay too.

  • Chow

omg, I ecstatic that it’s Revenge/III-style of Shinobi!

Though, I must say I was expecting to see something different about “turning missles into platforms”.  While that part in particular is reminiscent of fighting Black Turtle in the original Shinobi, I was expecting the “platforms” reference to look like the epic “crumbling cliff” level in Shinobi III.

Speaking of which, when is Joe Musashi gonna make an appearance in a SEGA All-Stars game?

    • Exkaiser

He’s always been there, you just can’t see him.

  • http://twitter.com/OhKeh OhKeh

This was very anti-climactic for me (in the pants).

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

How come they didn’t mention Nightshade in that opening montage! Hibana is fierce! Anyways, this game looks fun!

  • eilegz

graphics looks like gba quality =/

    • Exkaiser

      Someone’s never played a GBA.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Not to mention that it isn’t much of a criticism, since the GBA had fantastic graphics. =P

going to need to play this before i make up my mind.

  • Souji Tendou

    Why…? Why must it be on a 3DS? Why not on a PS3 or X360, arrrgggh…..!

  • PrinceHeir

    finally a working trailer :D

    looks awesome ^^

  • xxx128

Whats the benefit of 2.5d again? Tight control with ugly graphics? Yeah not impressed. What ever happened to beautiful drawn art? I mean c’mon, this is shinobi and people do enjoy drawn animes dont they. Seriously i just cant see textured polygons anymore. All damn games look the bloody same.
