Devil Survivor’s Character Designer Impressions Of The Nintendo DS Game

devilaKaraoke? Movies? Suzuhito Yasuda, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor’s character designer and Durarara!! artist, doesn’t have time for that. He’s too busy playing Devil Survivor on his DS. Or I should say was because he’s done playing the game.

In an interview on the Devil Survivor blog, Yasuda said he plays games to take breaks from drawing comics at home. Yasuda admits he gets into games too much, so he cuts himself off after ten minutes of playing. In his opinion, Devil Survivor feels just right because one map takes roughly fifteen minutes to complete. He defeated the last boss and the secret boss, which Yasuda said is "absolutely unreasonable." Yasuda cleared the fight by using quick saves.

Yasuda played through every route too except for Jin’s route. His overall thoughts are the game flow, tempo, and interface are excellent and there are only a few stressful parts he overlooked. Even though he always stopped at decision points, Yasuda rapidly tapped buttons to flip through event conversations. Yasuda feels that if you lose a battle there is a reason why and after playing it several times you can beat it.

As a Shin Megami Tensei fan, Yasuda is familiar with the devil communication system. When he heard Devil Survivor had auctions his reaction was "OK…". The interviewer says this was a hot topic of discussion among the development team when the game was being made. Yasuda says while previous Megami Tensei games brought historic demons to life, but he designed lead characters that have a pop feel to them. This was because designer Shinjiro Takada was flexible with the Megami Tensei series and Yasuda thinks this is why Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor was well received by new and old fans.

Yasuda was not involved with the content in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, an expanded version of the game for Nintendo 3DS. Purely as a fan, he’s looking forward to voice acting and the 8th day. Just like everyone he reads magazines to check for news about it.

  • I cant wait for Overclocked, I didnt know the game was that fast paced. August cant come fast enough. Pop-feel? I assume the music has the feeling too? If so, then epic.

    • Barrylocke89

The music has more of a rock feel to it, though there is a voiced song in there too.

  • AnimeRemix

Well, I’m still playing the original Devil Survivor. Almost done beating it~
And looking forward to OVERCLOCKED so I can play the 8th day…

“Yasuda feels that if you lose a battle there is a reason why and after playing it several times you can beat it.”

That’s definitely true. This is why the game actually didn’t seem THAT hard to me, recurring series optional boss aside…

    • AnimeRemix

It is true. Just finished killing… err… Knocking out Amane in Devil Survivor (doing Naoya route). After playing the battle over and over, I finally was able to win. =/

But maybe it’s just me, but I kinda like that about the game. Then again, this is my first SMT game ever…

      • imaguni

You just need to find the right strategy. A lot of people mention having to grind a lot in the game, but if that was all you needed to do, it would get boring after awhile.

I enjoy that about Devil Survivor as well, and I actually feel that it is much closer in vein to the other SMT/SMT-related games in that aspect (the ones I have had the chance to play anyway_. I hope the game encourages you to check out some of them! :D They’re worth the trouble it takes to find them, lol.

    • LynxAmali

My first playthrough had me fail against Wendolo several times before I figured out his pattern. That’s the advantage of it being an SRPG.

Also; Awesome guy. Glad he’s a fan.

      • imaguni

        True enough.

Agreed. Adds to him even working on the character designs to begin with.

  • DDanny

Only thing I didn’t like were those damn forced rescue missions, not everyone is playing as a lawful good messiah of goody-two shoesness you know…

    •  Or at least, I just wish that the rescue missions didn’t cause a game over when you failed them all the time.

Which sometimes, they weren’t! So I was kinda glad about that.

  • kylehyde

Is kinda funny that the firts route that I obtained was exactly the route that he didn’t played.

  • XypherCode

    yasuda’s a gamer at heart :P

  • AzureNova

He defeated the last boss and the secret boss, which Yasuda said is “absolutely unreasonable.”

Pfft, you’re telling me. I’m on the final boss fight now and he’s just overwhelmingly strong for no reason. Whats that Yasuda, you want me to pull out my action replay? Ok then ^_^. lol

  • puchinri

I love Yasuda-sensei, and it’s cool to see that he’s a SMT fan. I wonder what his favorite game is in the series?

But as much as I love him, I have to wonder what he was thinking when he made the designs for the second game, because the busts on the girls are ridiculously lolzy (in shape and…direction).

  • PrinceHeir

amazing art and hopefully he impress us more in Devil Survivor 2 :P

  • Sam

He skipped over that route….. that is the best route in the game D=
