Super Mario Land, Alleyway Are Likely 3DS Virtual Console Games

By Spencer . June 1, 2011 . 8:28am

Alleyway_boxartWhen the Nintendo 3DS eShop goes live on June 6 users will be able to download a web browser, 3DSWare games, and Virtual Console titles. Virtual Console for 3DS supports adds Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, and TurboGrafx-16 titles to its library.

Two Game Boy re-releases have been rated by the ESRB and they both star Mario. Super Mario Land puts the plumber in a submarine. Alleyway, a Breakout clone with koopa stage layouts, throws him in a block bouncing spaceship.

Alleyway and Super Mario Land we launch games for the Game Boy in North America. Perhaps, they will be 3DS Virtual Console launch games too?

    That’s a Mario game, really?

I bet just as much as Dr.Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is a Sonic game.

    • The Japanese boxart didn’t have Mario I never played that region so I don’t know if they edited the graphics but bonus stages are based on Mario sprites.

  • TG16 VC titles available at launch. Seriously Nintendo, do it.

I can, and -will- buy a digital copy of every HuCard I own for my 3DS.

Super Mario Land was an awesome game back in the day.  I want Super Mario Land 2 more though.  The game looked and played great on Gameboy.

I heard SML1 was criticized at the time, but I actually liked it better than SML2.

If the game does really come at launch on June 6th (looking likely now), I’ll buy it day one.

      • No idea why, except for its length and introducing Daisy… but I consider the Land games to be my favorites of the Classic Mario era.  Love the environments and enemies in these games.  I want to revisit Sarasaland again.

They complained about having human enemies in a Mario game, I think. Not a big deal if you ask me.

I usually don’t like 2D Mario much, but for some reason I really enjoyed SML1. And it’s been years since I last played it. I’d totally buy it. And the 3D mode would be an added bonus.

Yes! Super Mario Land! The masterpiece!

  • Finally, handheld games for the virtual console!

  • Alleyway is the best form of Brick Breaker ever made. I really hope Nintendo makes a new one.
