Add One To The PS Vita Is NGP’s Official Name Pile

By Spencer . June 6, 2011 . 1:23am

Rumors have been swirling that the NGP, a codename for Sony’s next handheld system, is actually called the PS Vita. This was first sparked by a leaked flier then a flurry of rumblings on the Internet.

Now, we have a more concrete source – the European trademark database.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan filed trademarks for PlayStation Vita, PS Vita, and the logo posted above. Confirmed titles for the NG- PS Vita include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Deviants, a Hot Shots golf game, Wipeout 2048, and Silent Hill: Book of Memories.

I’ll get use to the name xD I think it’s great name. Breaks away from traditional PS system names

  • But will it be able to monitor the glucose in blood?

  • heartless141

PSV i shall call it. :) short and simple, also resemble PSP a little bit.

    • I like the sound of that.

And should Sega ever decide to make another traditional Phnatasy Star, we can play PSV on the PSV.

      • Testsubject909

I like the sound of that for a different reason.
        Playstation 1
        Playstation 2
        Playstation 3
        Playstation Portable (4)
        Playstation Portable 2/NGP (5/V)

        • puchinri

That’s what I thought too. But the PSV part is nice too. Er, playing PSV on PSV I mean.

        • Didn’t the PSP came out before the PS3?

          • I remember getting the very first version in May 2004 so yeah.

      • malek86

I also wouldn’t mind it appearing as sponsor on the shirts of the PSV Eindhoven players.

  • Suicunesol

I keep reading it as “PSPita”.

    • Code

      Delicious, delicious, PSPita~!

  • skymap

I think as long as they pronounce it “vee-tah,” I’ll be fine with it. Certainly better than the pretentious “NGP.”

  • malek86

Sounds lame, but we’ll probably eventually get used to it. I mean, Vaio at first sounded like some kind of disease.

    • RagnaXBL

i think it sounds terrible, would it really have killed them to just call it psp2? even NGP sounds a billion times better than “Vita”, that sounds like some kind of health supplement or diet cereal

      • OneOkami

Yeah, I actually would’ve been fine with continuing to call it the NGP.

      • More like those water purifier things.

      • Chow

I vote PS2P, just to be different. >:)

    • I thought Vaio sounded quite cool, although naming convention for laptops aren’t that fabulous anyway.

    • Kris

You’re right, and I remember everyone thought NGP sounded terrible when the name was announced a few months back.

  • Still gonna call it the NGP

  • NetscapePizza

    Just call it PSP2 ffs

  • puchinri

Someone elsewhere mentioned that they thought Project Cafe should be named Vitality. I didn’t get why, but I thought it sounded cool. But now that makes sense…

PS Vita isn’t a particularly smooth or cool name though. Not bad, but not somewhat cool and simple like NGP.

  • Aoshi00

Sounds like the drink Vitasoy :) Anything’s better than NGP I guess..

  • Well cant wait for my PSV.

  • I’ll still be calling it PSP2.

  • Hmm. Whatever you decide to call it, Sony, it’s Pretty Seriously Vital that you keep it region- and hassle-free.

  • cmurph666

I don’t really care what they call it as long as it doesn’t suck.

  • blah blah

    Crap, that name sucks.

  • Lame!!! I’m still gonna call it NGP or PSP2

  • IceRomancer

Bad name, but can’t wait to play it :)

  • Yu_TheKing

Did they decide the name on a dart board or something?! I don’t think Vita is going to cut it for many people. I’d prefer “NGP”

  • PrinceHeir

oh well well get used to it just like the Move.

  • vita make me remember vista … the failed windows …
