Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Keeps Nintendo DS Alive In North America

By Spencer . June 7, 2011 . 3:01am

Get ready to take a trip all over Japan because Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 is coming stateside. The Nintendo DS sequel to Devil Survivor follows a kid who gets caught in a battle between mysterious space invaders while walking home from cram school.

You get to decide which of other twelve devil messengers join your side by recruiting them. Once in your party, you build bonds with a system similar to the Social Links introduced in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. Forming strong friendships increases battle effectiveness in Devil Survivor 2.

Surviving or keeping characters a live is a key part of the game. Just like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor certain choices lead to permadeath. A macabre website lets you see who is on the chopping block. With this knowledge, it’s possible to save lives – including your own. The choices you make lead to one of the multiple endings in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2. Will you join Yamato and the Geomagnetism division or another faction? Better question, will you actually save Japan?

The invaders are coming to Japan in July and next year in North America.

For the love of god, let it be early next year. Devil Survivor is the game that got me into Shin Megami Tensei, and it’s still my favorite.

  • Saraneth

Also, that friendship system seems awesome.

  • SolidusSnake

    NIIIIIIIIIIICE! Atlus does not disappoint.

  • DanteJones

Woo! Hope it comes out soon, gotta work on scoring Makoto points!

  • *Holding back my high pitched screams because it’s 24 hr quiet time for finals week at my dorm*

Friendship system? Permadeath? OH GOD TAKE MY MONEYS.

  • nemowsz

Heck yes. ATLUS, I’m worshiping you forever.

  • Waiting for Overclocked 2…

    • mirumu

Same. I guess the DS user base still dwarfs the 3DS one for earnings potential though. Can’t blame them going where the money is.

  • Heh, kind of have to wonder if a Devil Survivor Overclocked 2 will be coming out. I doubt I will be buying more ds games, but nice to see DS2 coming.

  • Jrpgfanatic

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to hear about this so soon, but yay!

    We love you Atlus! <3

  • Yes, more #DeSu!  (To those who didn’t get it, “DeSu” is the fan nickname of Devil Survivor).

At least I have no excuse not to get a Devil Survivor game, this time around.

  • Ereek

This will be the first DS game I’ve bought in months.  I really hate to be the “dusts off” type, but my poor DS really has been sad of late with the lack of new games.  Of course it makes sense that there would be less coming out considering the 3DS, but it’s still a sad ending to a fine handheld.

    • I don’t know if its “sad ending” has come just yet. ;p

      • Ladius

That’s some tease, considering the upcoming Nintendo conference :D

      • Ereek

The fact that it’s ending at all is sad, though!

    • Joanna

Well there’s always the massive back catalogue if you don’t have anything to play. It’s been keeping me really busy. I’ll probably be playing DS games for a few years to come. >//////<

  • Ladius

Thanks Atlus USA, good job in keeping the DS alive :) Now, could I ask for some juicy Growlanser 4 Over Reloaded (or whatever you choose to rename it)? Pretty please?

    • Exkaiser

Old Testament Der Growlanser 4: Over Reloaded Returns R: FES.

      • Ladius

        I like it :O

        …ok, I would buy Growlanser 4 even if it was renamed Hanna Montana Over Reloaded ;__;

  • Exkaiser

Oh, excellent. More Devil Survivor is good news.

  • Can’t wait for this game to be released… really, can’t.

  • Holy crap… Atlus, I love you guys forever now.  This is one of the fastest American-side release dates y’all have ever had.

    • SetzerGabbiani

The way they exceeded expectations with the first one all but guaranteed that we would get this asap.

  • Nice, at least we can count on Atlus when it comes to SMT games!; Here i go funny face nursey >8D But i will try to hold on to see if this games gets on the 3DS -_- this is a pretty lame thing to do though (for atlus jp)

  • Somazu

Any word on a european release of this or DS overclocked?

  • XypherCode

    sounds exciting :D

  • AzureNova

Next year couldn’t get here sooner. I can’t wait. ^_^

  • I hate to be -that guy-, but I may very well wait in hopes of a DS2 Overclocked. Seems unlikely to me that they would port DS1 over to 3DS, but not the second one. (Assuming enough good sales)

  • Uhh…is that Pyramid Head?

  • AnimeRemix

I was going crazy in class today when I heard this news!!! But it killed me inside when I found out it comes our next year! =(

  • Atlus, I love you for making me gritted my teeth and worried all the time, I love you for announcing that this game will be localized. Good God, you’re asking me for a relieving sigh!

    Geez I can’t wait >w<

  • Darkrise

    • Joanna

My thoughts exactly. Loved number 1 and may even end up picking up Overclocked (when I get a 3DS) just because it was such a great game. :)

  • Juuu

    I love you, Atlus. <3

  • polarbear171

omg so exciting !!!! i love devil survivor. can’t wait to play devil survivor 2 !!!!! i heard the console 3DS is bad (hurting your eyes and such) so did not want to waste money on a 3DS just to play overclocked … but i’ll be okay. i’m so happy that atlus is bringing devil survivor 2 to regular ds ! very exciting. 2012 !! woo

    • sfried

3DS is not bad. You can turn the 3D off but even then my eyes don’t hurt with it on. Overclocked is pretty neat and so are a bunch of other games for the system. But I’m glad Devil Survivor 2 is coming over here.

  • :)

  • Glad to hear that they’re going to continue to support the DS, I don’t have enough funds to purchase a 3DS (yet)

  • Kamakuma

Hmmm…I’m just glad I took the time to learn Japanese because I don’t think I can wait till 2012 for this game release. But even when it does come out in the U.S I’ll buy it again after I import the other..XD (Waste of money? Yes. Useful who knows? I’ll take that risk.)

  • aw…I really like this game..2012? I cant wait…I wish they release the blood of bahamut (USA)..But 2012 is the end of the world?..hahahahha
