Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded retells Crevaniel’s story with new routes found in the original PlayStation 2 release. Atlus already shared the PSP version’s opening video. Now we have a look at two animated scenes from the game.

Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded is slated for release on August 18 in Japan.

One of my most hyped games of 2011. The original PS2 release was awesome, it would be a crime to leave it in Japan a second time.

Atlus USA has been great those past weeks with P2 IS, Devil Survivor 2 and KoF13, I really hope they can give us some well deserved Growlanser love since this remake is shaping up to be even better than the original.

    • Crimson_Cloud

To me, Growlanser IV is shaping up to be a best JRPG for the PSP to this date.

      • Ladius

Aside from the Trails series Growlanser 4 is probably the PSP jrpg I’m most eager to play.

        • wakaki2d

Really? You guys think it’s THE jrpg series for the PSP. Even over Tales of the World ?

          • Ladius

I’m a big Tales fan, but TotW isn’t really the best that series can offer. On the contrary, TotW1 was a mess with boring dungeons, almost no plot, repetitive quests and some absurd design choices (like how the characters could refuse to join your party). TotW2 improved that formula and TotW3 is apparently far better, but those two are Japan-only games and, even if they improved upon the original, are still outsourced spin-offs intended for fanservice purpose.

I would be more interested in seeing Tales of Phantasia Narikiri X localized (not to mention the Rebirth and Destiny 2 ports).

          • http://twitter.com/Wakaki2D Wakaki2D

Yeh, your kinda right. I guess even I think there are better RPG’s than ToWR I just assumed most people would hold it higher then alot of others so I used it as a comparison. I never finished the PS2 game, so I am hoping I can play this one day.

          • Ladius

@Wakaki: Yeah, Tales of the World games aren’t so highly regarded even inside the Tales fanbase. Of course every fan would be happy to play ToTWRM3 because of its incredible roster, but I don’t think anyone would like to see it localized before the mothership entries.

Personally my most hyped jrpg releases on PSP right now are the Trails in the Sky games (the first was incredibly good), Growlanser 4 OR and Terror of the Stratus (simply because Nudemaker proved its greatness with Infinite Space), and I would like to add Valkyria Chronicles 3 to that list if Sega dediced to localize it. Grand Knights History is another interesting title, but its multiplayer focus is a bit of an hassle for a single-player oriented player such as me.

          • Crimson_Cloud

Also a big Tales of the World fan but honestly it plays like MMO with your character being nothing but a hollow persona, and honestly it can’t beat a good plot + multiple endings with a girl. ;)
I do adore Tales of series on other consoles mind you.

If I have to mention a good tales of game or the best for me, that would be Tales of Rebirth. Not Tales of the World. Those other Tales on psp (Eternia, Destiny 2, Rebirth, etc) were ports (with nothing new except some galery option) but this game, Growlanser IV has a lot of new things making it veeeery diferent from a port.

For a second I read Atlus arms US…well my eyes trolled me~
I’m still quite hyped for this game, I dig the videos~

  • Zio_Name

Sephiroth look-alike detected. It’s me or the “Sephiroth look” is becoming overused?

    • Ladius

Comments about characters hairdoes are becoming overused.

      • Zio_Name

Sure, but its really boring to see really often the same haircut and color. Well, after all, i think it’s pretty normal. Developers can’t think of new ideas. In the last 2-3 years i saw only 5 or 6 really original designs for jrpg characters.

        • Ladius

Or, more simply, you confuse originality with having different hairdoes when there’s a limited number of colors and hairdoes versus hundreds upon hundreds of characters drawn each year for animes, manga, jrpgs, visual novels and the like. That’s why this kind of comment is ultimately pointless, especially when you compare two character designers as different as Nomura and Urushihara.

    • symytry

that look was around long before Sephiroth made an appearance.

      • Zio_Name

        An example?

        • kariohki

          Ghaleon is pretty close.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Ah damn it, my heart skipped a bit with this topic. My eyes failed me, I thought it had something to do with English release. *sigh* All this waiting is shrinking my life span.

  • DarkWaterClone

It is sad I took a quick glance at the title & got happy only to find out this new Growlanser game is still not coming out in North America.

I wish Atlus would bring this out of Japan. If not I hope they allow Victor Ireland to bring the series out of Japan again. But this time instead of Working Designs it would be GaijinWorks.

Also Spencer any chance you could ever get an interview with Mr. Ireland. It would be neat to see if GaijinWorks will ever be bringing games out or will it just be getting games on PSN. Like how Mr. Ireland got Alundra on PSN?

  • Samken

Another Grownlanser game, Another unlocalized game, time to import!

    • Ladius

Let’s wait some months after the Japanese release to consider it lost to the west, shall we?

  • wakaki2d

Awesome, loved loved the PS2 game. Glad to play it on a system I’m still using. Hopefully it’ll be a PSN download too.

  • PrinceHeir

love the retro art style :)

hope it get’s released here :P

  • Hours

About Growlanser IV, the plot, character and gameplay were awesome.
Old Growlanser were games that make your choice valuable, not only for
routes but the results on your mission affect your future choice or
conversations, hell you can even save a character life from it.

I never speak bad about games with “datim-sim” elements because I know
games like this that can be have a very serious plot while you have your
time with the girls making everything fit well.
