How Dragon’s Crown Will Utilize PlayStation Vita’s Touch Screen

Sony unveiled Dragon’s Crown during their PlayStation Vita presentation at E3, but Vanillaware’s fantasy beat ‘em up is also coming to PlayStation 3. Aside being portable, how is the PlayStation Vita version different?

"On PlayStation 3, you use the analog stick [like a cursor] to select objects such as healing items. We wanted to take advantage of features on Vita, like the touch screen, so on Vita you can do the same thing by touching objects on the screen," Kashow Oda, producer, answered.

Oda then revealed a neat feature, "In addition to items, you can touch parts of the background. Walls, for example, may collapse if you touch them opening new paths."

Dragon’s Crown also features PlayStation 3 and Vita connectivity. If you have both versions you can transfer your data from a PS3 game over to Vita and continue to play Dragon’s Crown with the same character wherever you are.

We’ll have more about Dragon’s Crown next week when our interview goes live.

I want to touch the sorcerer XD

    • godmars

I bet you even money that within a year they’ll be a touch game like that for the system.

Doki Doki Majo Shinpan for Vita? Oh hell yea!

      • SlashZaku

Whenever Tecmo/Team Ninja gets around to making a DOA for it?  DOAP would be a great fit in their mind with the touch screen(s).  Oddly enough, I’d like to see a new Rumble Roses from Konami but I think the guy who worked on that series is heading up Love Plus now.

      get in line

    • Genjo

i SEC that i am going to enjoy using vita touch feature while touching those  juicy characters girls wise XD!

    • Guest

touch the front screen for the bewbs

touch the rear screen for DATASS

use the gyroscope to make em wiggle and clap

      • doomspeller10

Now with touchscreen a nude patch just won’t be enough…

        Hahaha.. I like this idea

How did I know this would be the highest rated comment when I got in here. How?

  • endaround

    Transfarring?

    • SlashZaku

Really hoping Sony comes out with an official term for Vita-PS3 play/save transfers cause I’m tired of seeing Kojima’s term.  Was his explanation for it ever explained?

      • kupomogli

I love how Capcom said it would be possible to transfer your save back and forth between the PSP and the PS3 with Monster Hunter Portable 3, obviously for those who live in Japan or import, and then Kojima is like.  :O.  I’ll make a stupid name and get all the credit for carrying game saves between two different consoles.

  • SlashZaku

So Vita version will have hidden paths due to the touch screen?  How are they going to handle it on the PS3 (DLC?  Hidden levels unlocked through different means?)?

    • Neckbear

Probably attacking the background to open them, instead. Opening the paths with your bare fists. Like a real man.

      • glemtvapen

A sudden image of a gamer punching his TV to bust open a wall flashed in my mind.

the information just keeps on getting better and better

  • HarryHodd

Open new paths. Cool. I want this game to be explorable instead of just linear.

  • glemtvapen

Was it ever explained how this transfarring work? Do I have to buy one for Vita and one fore PS3 to make use of this function?

I was planning on only picking up just the PS3 version but the Vita’s touch function is just too delicious to pass up. But dropping coin for basically the same game on different platforms is too rich for my sorry wallet.

    • http://twitter.com/ShadowJetX Edward Sayese

Yeah, you need a copy of the game for each system. In which most cases I would drop the cash like in the case of Star Ocean and Disgaea, if it’s the same exact game I don’t see the point in dropping the extra big ones. I just don’t see the point in playing the same exact game on 2 different platforms just so I can transfer my data across them.

Nice, this alone sells me a PS Vita

    • FireCouch

Picking up objects by tapping? That’s worth $250?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely getting this game, and I’m definitely getting the Vita, but not to pick up items with my pinky.

Having played on the NDS and the iPhone, this leaves me cold.

  • 128bitigor

I just hope they won’t throw the touch function everywhere or at least make it all optional. We all know from the experiences with DS that touching is not always good…

  • FireCouch

Who on earth is going to buy both versions of the game?  They are exactly the same, it appears.

    • ShinGundam

I think it’s a consequence of the cross-platform play but i don’t think it is bad, Managing competitive team play across two different platforms anywhere, anytime, with anyone via online is great idea imo :(

      • IsaacGravity

I agree. Brings more players into one grand field regardless platform. But I’d also imagine it’d be hell to maintenance.

  • http://www.carter4.org/ Nintendo card

with touchscreen a nude patch just won’t be enough…

  • z_merquise

So you need both the PS3 and the PS Vita versions in order to transfer your save file from one system to another then. Would that explain why pre-order for the game online is only $30 in either versions?

I’m excited to see more details in Siliconera’s upcoming interview.

  • Phlo

Reminds me of the early days of the DS. Yeah, I’ll just get the PS3 version.

  • mikanko

Hoping there’s a PSN download bundle for both versions.  Same goes for the expected addon to Wipeout HD that’ll have the tracks that’re on 2048.

  • Juuu

Interesting. Glad to see developers taking advantage of the features a second touch screen could open up. [no pun intended] I was really wondering if it even had a point other than being the latest in Sony’s “BUT WE HAVE TWOOOO OF THEM!” series [preceeded by such classics as two analog sticks ;p] so it’s nice to see Vanillaware working with it.

  • fanoultimate

Hmm not bad, but that means the only connectivity between ps3 and psv is the use of the same save state? i wanted some crossplay, like playing with psv and ps3 users

    • http://About.me/StbxYou Stb Hernández

Go to andrasang, that is coming in the package, four playable players can go on from both platform over PSN.

  • PrinceHeir

    Badass :D
