Saint Seiya Chronicle Is A Musou Style Game From Tecmo Koei

By Spencer . June 20, 2011 . 2:18am

imageNamco Bandai has a "stars" teaser site that’s about to expire and we’re pretty sure its for Saint Seiya Chronicle. Announced in V-Jump, this game is the first Knights of the Zodiac title for PlayStation 3.  Pegasus Seiya, Dragon Shiryu, Cygnus Hyoga, Andromeda Shun, and Phoenix Ikki are shown as playable characters in a magazine scan.

Namco Bandai will publish Saint Seiya Chronicle, but they aren’t developing the game. Tecmo Koei is and they’re making it musou-like.

Saint Seiya Chronicle is slated for fall only on PlayStation 3.

  • Inb4 Musou game hate~

I like Musou and I love Saint Seiya, soooo YAY!! I think this has the chance to be my first Saint Seiya game, I’m not even sure if there are a lot..

  • Really, another one? I wonder why did they start to pop out just recently (aside from Gundam).

    • On the upside, hopefully they’ll address some (all?) of the negative feedback.

  • kupomogli

A friend of mine was like “Now the PS3 is better than the 360” and linked me to a picture showing Saint Seiya being PS3 exclusive.  I have to just laugh now.  Obviously the company to get the rights to develop the game is only one of the worst game developers of recent time.  Can’t ruin just one anime(Gundam,) nor two(Fist of the North Star,) but three(Saint Seiya.)  You are seriously on a roll Koei.  I wonder how many well loved anime series you’ll ruin with your garbage Musou gameplay before the end of this gen.  Keep up the good… errr… terrible work.

I for one can’t wait to mash the square button repeatedly on end once again./sarcasm.

    • Speak for yourself. This might actually be the BEST Saint Seiya game when you compare Musou to the horrors that were the anime’s previous licensed releases.

    • Exkaiser

I’m not certain how Gundam or Fist of the North Star are “ruined” by Musou games.

The games are completely ignorable at worst.

    • You brought up the mash square button argument, which I sadly have to agree with, to some extend at least.

So far the developers managed to put some good challenges and ideas into their games, but they always sell their games short by not encouraging the higher difficulty levels. It’s a shame, because that’s were I think the games’ meat is.

Samurai Warrios 3 on Hard or above is a good game due to the guard break move, aggressive peon AI, item management and time limits. It’s not rocket science, but definitely above mashing.
But yeah… why bother? For a boring unlockable sword that’s not relevant as your character is already a powerhouse by then?

Other games give you secret bosses, score bonuses, new stages or other motivating things. Why can’t Koei add something like that?
For god’s sake Koei, cap character stats in easy and normal mode, lock the last chapters, make more bonuses that are actually worth fighting for… or something like that.

    • GVmanX

Yes, because one company making a few games you don’t like based off of anime you like ruins them forever.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Hmm, while this is a classic, I would still love to see The Lost Canvas game instead. Ah well, maybe in the future.

      Saint Seiya >>>>> Lost Canvas

      • Crimson_Cloud

Maybe for some but I prefer The Lost Canvas Gold Saints. They are much cooler and more badass there.

        • Guest

No they’re not. Shaka = man closest to God. Also I do not prefer the new artist. eww.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

I’d rather Koei focus on less games so they can improve their formula, but who am I to argue with a strategy that’s somehow kept them alive for the past decade?

  • epy

Yes!!! Haters gonna hate but I love Saint Seiya. This is great news.

    • Aoshi00

What do you mean haters?  We don’t know how this game is going to turn out, sometimes blind buying could be a waste of $80 no matter how big a fan you are (Kenshin PSP game sry piece of…), let’s face it there’s a lot of mediocre anime based games… I liked the 2 NES games when I was a kid and the PS2 games were alright.. not the biggest musou fan, will need to wait and see.  would be nice if they make this as an RPG instead of a 3D brawler, even the Wonderswan 2D sprites looked good.. the picture above looks good though, miles beyond the primitive polygons from PS2..

Actually there’s one biggest flaw for this game, the bronze saints would be the new seiyuu cast which no one liked :(… I will need to wait for reviews before plucking down $80 even as a life long Saint Seiya fan.

  • Aoshi00

Hm… I would love a Seiya game in HD (the pic above looks really good and resembles closely the Araki Shigo/Himeno Michi style), but I’m not terribly excited about the Musou gameplay which could get repetitive, which is why I haven’t really played Gundam or Fist of the North Star.. I hope the boss fight against the Gold Saints would be good though (wonder if this is just Sanctuary), will see..

For now I’m just content looking at the Myth Cloth figures on my desk :)

  • I wonder the series to be alright, and I find musou style games to be entertaining mostly, so I’ll keep an eye out for this one.

  • landlock

Already confirmed for Europe according to they’ve just added a boatload of NB games.

  • kroufonz

musou game mean chance of this game leaving japan is quite high

  • Seems interesting, I would definitely get it as an entry into the franchise.

  • Xeahnort

I felt too disappointed back then with the Hades chapter on PS2. Saint Seiya deserves a good game.

    • Guest

No playable Hades or Pandora : (

  • Anone

man…saint seiya is famous for its 1vs1 combat. Having it musou-style just kills the series completely. Musou style means 1 well-known bronze/ gold saint vs hundreds of cannon fodders. Boring… Would better have them make it Blazblue style instead :(

    • eilegz

the same we could say about hokuto no ken, and it faired very well….

      • At least in the anime adaptation, there were some mob fight scenes.

        • Guest

You dont remember Hades arc where they anniallated the 108 spectors?

          • My previous comment was aimed at #FistOfTheNorthStar.

    • Aoshi00

The PS2 games were fighters but there was a mode you fight the small fries in Sanctuary to reach the gold saints.  Also the old NES games (Golden Legend 1 & 2) were 2D sidescrollers, you fight small fries along the way to the temples, once you reach the gold saints, it would be turn based command RPG style, so it’s not like they haven’t thrown in small fries in the past Saint Seiya games before, they’re just now doing it in 3D. Personally I’m not that interested in the Musou Formula, I would have to wait for reviews on this one despite being a huge Seiya fan. Blind buying the Kenshin PSP game was a huge mistake.. but at least this is on PS3, hope the graphics would be good.

      Remake on Wonderswan

It would be nice if we get some Saint Seiya RPGs…

  • nyobzoo

I just hope they improve the musou formula

  • I’m fine with the musou formula. I think it’s a good way to explore vast universe such as Gundam, ROTK or Hokuto no Ken…

Too bad they focus so much on the PS3…

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

      Japan doesn’t exactly adore the 360 >_>

  • Barrit

They should sooo make a Koihime Musou game next..

    • heartless141

it was a game originally to begin with.

      • Barrit

Yea I know, I meant a Musou/warriors game. It was just kinda weird to type a Koihime Musou musou game.

  • heartless141

    Well what can i say? after 15 years of this [] [] [] [] / x10. O
i’m still not tired of it yet. :D

  • eilegz

If we can see that this its the 3rd anime musou game and what we saw in the past, its that if they released it outside of Japan, it will be available for xbox360 too… so far i liked the gundam and hokuto no ken musou so definetly this one its going to be EPIC too, HYPED right now…

  • While I have no doubts the game will be mediocre at best, I can help to smile at the prospect of an HD SS game. Will have to import it, unless it gets released in Mexico…

  • Zero_Destiny

That’s cool. I’d look forward to it more but who knows if it’ll come over to the US. Oh well if our friends over in Europe get it I might import. :D Then again I don’t know if I really want to import a Dynasty Warrior game. lol I’m not gonna insult them like most people do their actually a guilty pleasure of mine. May be repetitive but I still find them pretty fun. XD

Hm well maybe if I’m lucky the US might see the game. After all Fist of the North Star didn’t fare to well in the US ether (we only got like 36 episodes dubbed on TV and then it was canceled) so maybe it might happen. Of course it’s a big maybe but I can dream right?!!! Oh well time to watch the Opening Song again!!!

  • Oh god yes finally a Saint Seiya game

  • So long as they’ve learned from the mistake that was Hokuto no Musou, I’m sure they’ll do… better.

    • Guest

Says you. That game was awesome

      • I don’t think I’m a fan of yours, Mr. Triple Cow. =/

        • Guest

Lies. Lady’s love me. I’m on my cool J…

          • If you think I’m a girl then you’ve got other problems (aside spelling). :I

          • Guest

            *quoted Chris Brown song*

  • Finally, a reason for me to care about SS all over again. The only time I’ve known about this was from that CN Saturday night program. Haven’t watched long enough to be a fan, but damn, this series has gotten so far it’s like everybody’s a main character.

  • yes finaly i hope is goint to be a good game

  • OMG … too bad I don’t have and will never have any PS3 … I hope they port it to PC or Wii U someday …

  • @NamcoBandai:twitter @TecmoKoeiUS:twitter I sincerely hope this song’s master track would be licensed for inclusion in the game, preferably as its intro:
