Sonic turns 20 years old on June 23 and Sega is handing out a Sonic Generations demo as a party favor. Download it and you can play Green Hill Zone Act 1 with Classic Sonic.

Sega plans to release the demo in multiple regions, but only for a limited time. Reports from Japan note distribution of the Sonic Generations demo will end on July 12. Also, Xbox Live free members have to wait a week before they can download the 653 MB file.

Too bad, I thought they could let us try City Escape with both old and modern Sonic.

Still, modern Sonic is the one that is more difficult to pull off correctly, so I hoped they would give out a demo of that instead… it would be more useful.

    • I think Green Chills has more nostalgic factor than City Escape, probably the reason why they show case that. Anyway, cant wait to play it. Shame no PS3 date or date in the US?

      • I don’t know…there are a LOT of Sonic fans who are crazy about Sonic Adventure 2. I’m one of them. City Escape has WAY more nostalgia for me.

But since Green Hill Zone has been showed off way more, it’s probably easier to reveal less and just feature that one level for the demo. Especially if it’s free.

Well, at least we know that the demo is coming to the European PSN Store tomorrow since Sony European blog confirms it Hopefully this also comes out on the American PSN Store tomorrow (Though, I’m sure it will).

I have mixed opinions on Green Hill being more nostalgic… I can see how it could since it’s the first stage to start everything in the Sonic series, but there was a lot of people in love with Adventure 2/Battle (And City Escape is on one of the most popular/memorable stages ever. City Escape is more nostalgic to me than Green Hill Zone).

While GHZ (and its chiptune theme) is probably one of the most recognizable things from the 16-bit era, I believe City Escape had more of a wow factor. However, I might be partially biased, since I’m not much of a fan of the 2D Sonic games.

      • Agreed. But I still think they should’ve put the modern one too so that people won’t be as nervous as to if they could get that to play right lol.

    • Exkaiser

They’ve already proven they could do modern sonic correctly in Unleashed and Colors, which this game’s modern Sonic seems to be patterned off.

I think it’s more useful to showcase classic sonic, since they haven’t shown any examples of classic sonic physics lately.

  • Looks like I’ll be trying to hook my PS3 up to the internet tomorrow. This is pretty cool.

  • Shinji Kazuya

    Gonna try this right now!

  • well i will give this a try tomorrow

  • It’s time for the REAL DEAL!

  • Exkaiser

Looks like I’ll be borrowing my brother’s Xbox.

  • TanyaRei

Itd be nice if theyd give us a 3DS demo too. Though I admit thats a bit harder

  • Covnam

Wouldn’t a proper demo have both sonics in it on the same stage?

    • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

They plan to release two demos most likely Green Hill for classic City Escape for modern. It makes sense as a marketing strategy

  • disappointed that it’s only gonna come with classic gameplay. I have already played green hill zone in 2D bring something new to the table. Either way this game looks perfect

  • Caligula

I’ve barely played my 360 since I first got it 3 years ago, but what with this announcement, I think I might brush off the dust.

  • Anyone else notice that it says “Demo # 1” when you download it? I hope more are on the way…!

    • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

There’s going to be a City Escape Demo most likely and you’ll play as modern Sonic
