By Spencer . June 28, 2011 . 6:09pm

imageRune Factory 4 is in development for the Nintendo 3DS. Famitsu revealed the title and that Neverland returns as the developer.

With Rune Factory 4, Neverland is powering up the love component and adding heartwarming situations for couples. The game’s male protagonist is Les (maybe Lest, I can’t think of anyone with that name?) and the female lead is Frey.

Details are still leaking out, but we should hear a lot more about Rune Factory 4 soon since its slated for release in Japan this year.

Update: More details about Rune Factory 4 are out. Read all of the news in this post!

Japan is so lucky they annouce games and get them released some months later T__T

  • I guess this is my killer app for the 3DS
… will buy a 3DS(if I have the money at that time) when this comes out in english

    • RunePokegrl00

      Checking Gamefaqs to find out

  • Les sound weird for a name since it pretty much means “the” in french iirc. Anyway I’m not going to look forward to future information about RF4 because it’s probably going to take a year+ for it to be localized in the EU. Being over excited about a game that I won’t be able to play for a VERY long time is damn horrible for me especially if it’s port of the harvest moon franchise.  I’m still waiting for rune factory 3 to release here. I would import this but I can’t thanks to Nintendo decision to region lock this…damn “handheld” console.

    • YsyDoesIt

Les Paul approves of the name.

  • DanteJones

This is good, can’t wait to see the new character designs and everything. :)

    • good….GOOD…?! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • DanteJones

I stand corrected, it is indeed AWESOME. *puts on sunglasses*

  • meat0bun

      • RunePokegrl00

        ……………… he is super happy!

    • I don’t know or want to know, but please keep it off the site. Thanks!

    • DanteJones

Don’t worry, I got this one.

  • Wow, looks like I’ll have to get the third one soon — I’ve yet to play it! I’m very excited for this though. =) Cannot wait!

  • Elemiel

Rune Factory 4? YES! My excitement levels are through the roof!!!

    • RunePokegrl00

so far HM and RF games r to easy for me on ds. Hoping to get a 3ds for my birthday(5 more months) or x-mas

  • PersonaBull

I’m curious, will the female lead be playable at all? I couldn’t stay with it long enough in RF2 (got bored) and I know Oceans has a playable female. I’m also curious how it will be balanced this time around. RF1 had a perfect(for me) balance between farming, wooing, and adventuring. RF2 lost something along the way(again, for me. My friend that introduced me to the RF games loved RF2), but RF3 expanded in a much better way so I at least had plenty of wooing and adventuring to do (farming seemed pointless).

Regardless, this is wonderful news. I’ll definitely pick up a 3DS by the time this comes out in the US (because I say it will!). I also need to finish up RF3. I get much too distracted playing wonderful games.

    • DanteJones

If they just build upon what they have already established in RF3 then I’ll be happy. I hope they have the female lead worked out so it’s the same amount of game play/story for both male and female and it’ll let a broader audience play the wonderful game that is Rune Factory. :)

EDIT: Spelling corrections, yay spelling! *clap clap*

    • Vino (Tim N)

I have to admit I didn’t play RF2 because I couldn’t get passed the voices. But RF1 and RF3 were really good. And I agree with you that farming in the third game did feel a little bit pointless. By half the game, I could have stopped farming and still have been fine. I had no need for the money I accumulated. =s

      • …then i guess it’s pretty much a failure then? because the whole point and premise of the Harvest Moon series is farming, and if after a short while there’s no real motivation to expand/maximize farming, then what’s the point?

given that this is a Rune Factory title, which boasts adventuring/other features other than farming, but still… they should never let farming be “optional”, but instead should eventually unlock options that lessens farm micromanagement, freeing you to do the adventuring. but farming should be first and foremost your primary source of income for EVERYTHING.

if it fails at that, then it’s a failure as a Harvest Moon title. fun, but failure.

        • PersonaBull

It’s not really that it “failed” at farming. The only reason it was “optional” was because I preferred gaining money through the quest board and stuff instead of farming. That amount of “optional” decision was always present in the Rune Factory games. In RF1 I planted some strawberries in the first cave to get my early economy up and then switched to primarily mining (since mining was insanely broken in that one). There was yet again no need to farm because it was not high up on my priorities list compared to wooing all the ladies, expanding my house, and dominating the caves. My friend who enjoys the Harvest Moon games used her entire farm each season. The beauty of the Rune Factory games is how diverse each save file can be played. The “whole point” of Harvest Moon games could easily be wooing ladies for plenty of people, with farming simply the “battle mechanic” as it were.

I’d say giving it the option to do whatever you wanted was an excellent part of the Rune Factory series, and in absolutely no sense a “failure.” It was very much an expansion of the Harvest Moon idea.

    • RunePokegrl00

3ds is out now. I play with 2 little kids who r a bit crazy(in 6th and 3rd-4th grade) and they have a 3ds already. I want one too. I also finished RF3 before New years.

      • PersonaBull

I meant “I’ll pick up a 3DS by the time Rune Factory 4 comes out in the US”

        • RunePokegrl00

          Oh right…… srry

  • Female lead?

Does that mean we can play as a female or is that the main girl you can woo?

This and Overclocked on 3DS makes me weep.

      My thoughts exactly ;–;

      • RunePokegrl00

How much is the 3ds? I have……. $58 and a LOT of coins

    • I share your pain ;w;

  • I NEED more information!!!!! :D

  • Mia

    Any scans? <3

  • Cailum Willey

    Now I need a 3DS. DARNNIT!

  • But will he be a sheep? :O

I’m glad there’s going to be more romance. Not like I’m a romance person or anything, it’s just that the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory series kind of lacks that kind of depth for a game that features marriage.

    • DanteJones

Nah, that’s just the MC from RF3, although it’d be cool if the MC for RF4 has some sort of ability like that. I liked how being half monster has weaved into the story. :D

      • RunePokegrl00

No, in rf4 the main character(boy/girl) loses thier memory as always and then becomes a prince/princess.

  • That’s great news! Seems like I got a reason to get a 3DS. Here’s hoping they keep the 2D portraits.

  • Vino (Tim N)

This is great news to come home to. I was thinking of going out and getting a 3DS today anyways (I’ll put it off until tomorrow), and this just makes me want one even more.

Its good to hear about more love components because Rune Factory 3 could have used a bit more after the first dates. It wasn’t that hard to woo many of them. I don’t care much about the monster form, unless it could be more useful this time around. But more weapons and crafting better weapons is something I love to do in the game, and hope more is fleshed out in it.

PS, what color 3DS should I get, I can’t seem to decide! D:

    • Lord Highawesomeparty

Go for blue! It’s the official colour! I think the black looks kind of meh.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Enhance the dating by adding a harem option!

    • add yuri harem option

      steal all the potential wives

  • Guest

I hope some of the stuff ain’t as hard to make or find. I played RF3 for HOURS and was never able to make omelet or get to the first dungeon. Hell I even filled up Sofias hearts.

    • xXDGFXx

man, i played this game all the way to the end with no cheats on my flashcart and i found it easy. also, i bought the game after but will never play the retail because of the english dubs.

      • Guest

Crap. I didn’t mean to like  your post. >_<

Err the game wasn't "hard". I just couldn't find ingredients. That's all.

        • xXDGFXx

i just looked it up on the internets :)

    • RunePokegrl00

The game is hecka easy for me now. Beat it 5 times(copied bro’s game and beat Aquarius for him). Now i’m waiting for price cut on 3ds and RF4.

  • xXDGFXx

YESSSSSSS. i love this game with a burning passion because the character development is just top :)

  • Between MegaMan Legends 3 and this I have a sudden need to get a 3DS more than ever now… Here’s to a quick localization announcement!

  • I wonder if this one will let you choose a gender, if only for the yuri options lol

  •  Woot, sounds awesome
The events for couples were truly enhanced in RF3, so much that I couldnt help going through nearly all of them, so I can’t wait to see how they’ll go beyond this~
But I wonder if they’ll lessen farming or make it more of a necessity

    • DanteJones

From what I hear of RF: Oceans the farming in that was tuned down quite a bit, I won’t go into detail though for those who want to keep the details to a minimum.

A bit off topic but I gotta ask, is your name a twist off of Ruby Soho? Like, destination unnnnnnnknown! I hope so or that statement isn’t going to make much sense lol.

      • Umm, no, its actually my name dude xD

        • DanteJones

Ah crap, my bad. There’s this band named Rancid I really like and one of their songs is titled “Ruby Soho”, so, ya’know. Awesome name though! XD

  • Suicunesol

I’ve never played a Rune Factory game before. But I loved the original Harvest Moon 64. Considering the lack of killer games for my 3DS, I guess it’s finally time to give this series a shot.

I can’t wait to see what it looks like!

    • RunePokegrl00

I get bored with my HM and RF games easy. But it’s fun to start over :)

  • Somazu

    I Loved RF3, and as happy as it makes me to hear about RF4 on 3ds, the region locking on 3DS makes me cry, as it means we europeans will be screwed over and not get it until a year or so after it comes out in america like all RF/HM games ;_;

    • MewkaKazami

Totally… I mean this game for me is sort of a System seller… So far theres really not that many 3DS games that I like. And considering stuff like Senran Kagura will never see the light od day in Europe the 3DS seems pretty unattractive becuase of Region Locking.

I mean we got Rune Factory 3 just recently in Europe and it’s a 2009 so it took 3 years for it to get to Europe… unbelievable!

  • Enma_Kozato

A person on Ushi No Tane apparently found scans of it. There’s a blue haired butler and two elf looking women. One is blonde and the other has pink hair. Pink haired elf is carrying some vampire imagery.

  • Aw, dang it! I haven’t even finished RF3! And RF:O isn’t even out yet!
