An Unprecedented Look At Project Dropship, Square Enix LA’s Canceled Game

By Spencer . June 30, 2011 . 1:55am

Earlier this year, Siliconera revealed Project Dropship, a canceled project from Square Enix’s Los Angeles studio. We shared concept art of two characters, the space pirate Wilson and Lynn, a pink-haired girl with goggles.

Our first reveal didn’t do Project Dropship justice. The space-western meets Smash TV style shooter was considerably far into development and we have screenshots from a prototype version of the game.

Each character has weapons like laser guns and rifles. Turrets are scattered through levels, which you can take control of and use to blast giant space worms. You can’t see it in these screenshots, but characters can jump too.

One neat effect is a creature who looks like a cousin from Darius flies appears in the background.

Project Dropship was slated for release as a downloadable game for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Update: We have videos of Project Dropship too. Watch ‘em right here.

This actually looks pretty sweet. If it had supported co-op, I probably would have bought this and played it with mah buddies… Interesting looking setting too.

    But oh well. :/

It does support co-op with at least three players.

For a downloadable game, it looks pretty nice. Why was it cancelled again?

It wasn’t announced to the public either so the title was canned during development.

It looks really decent… perhaps the project had the wrong name? It reminds me of project dogshit… sorry, too much watching AVGN lately.

Why they cancel this ? This game had all the potential to be a great co-op downloadable game =/

Makes me sad SE cancelling this while their JP games division didn’t showed much this E3 =/

They don’t like making good games is why.

Geez, from the looks of all this they’d practically finished it already! I know they were closing Square Enix LA, but couldn’t they have left a small team going to do the finishing touches?
