The Last Story And Pandora’s Tower Playable At Japan Expo

By Spencer . July 1, 2011 . 10:59am

Nintendo of Europe brought playable builds of The Last Story and the recently released Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return to Your Side to Paris. Both games are on display at Japan Expo.

You Europeans are so disgustingly lucky with NoE right now. I am jealous! NoA is so incredibly crappy this gen it’s not even funny. Were either The Last Story or Pandora’s Tower localized at the event?

I asked NCSX about importing the Euro Xenoblade and they told me that not all PAL games can be forced into NTSC mode even with a softmodded Wii – so they won’t stock it until they know for sure. I hope these games can be :-/.

    • raikage

We (Europeans) can be lucky now, sure. But we weren’t in the past and there are still some games that just have to be released in Europe (wich are already available in NA).
As far as I know, you can play every PAL/NTSC(J) game in any region (softmod ftw?). It shouldn’t be a problem.

      • thebanditking

Very true and very easy, Google softmod Wii and SSBB or Lego Indiana Jones. Will void your warranty but is easily reversible if you want to get rid of the Homebrew channel afterward.

    • malek86

The only PAL games that won’t work in NTSC mode are those that don’t support 60hz or 480p.

Since pretty much every Nintendo game this gen has supported 480p (aside from very early titles like MP8 and Twilight Princess), I think we should be in the clear.

    • Yamaneko22

Are you aware that we never got Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenosaga III, Suikoden III, Radiata Stories and many, many, many more? That what is happening now (NoE being nice) is just cosmos correcting this imbalance ;)

      • Kaoro

I am. Keep in mind I said you are lucky with NoE “right now”.

  • were they in english/french?

    • I guess they were both in Japanese. The Last Story has been announced for 2012, but I highly doubt it’s already translated. Pandora’s Tower is not even announced, and even the Ganbarion guys were totally unaware they were showing the game at the Expo (according to the tweets they left). I would be to the 7th Heaven if they announced Pandora’s Tower to be localized.

      • malek86

Pandora’s Tower strikes me as very odd. Unlike TLS and XB, it didn’t even reach 100k copies. I thought it would end up like Zangeki, never to be seen anywhere else. But then, we did get Disaster, so who knows.

PS. hey cool, another italian. We are getting more numerous by the minute. Soon we’ll dominate Siliconera.

        • We also got Sin & Punishment 2, that sold 8k copies the first week in Japan… I think sold copies don’t really mean anything in deciding which games are to be localized, at this point. And if you think about it, Pandora’s Tower is having a good success for a niche Wii game: games like that often sell less than 10k copies, while this has just reached 40k. It’s pretty decent!

PS. Oh! Are you Italian, too? Nice to meet you! Are we really that much here on Siliconera?! I’d have never thought that!

          • malek86

I think not, actually. Maybe it’s just you and me. But then, I’m not sure. I never really paid attention.

          • neo_firenze

Maybe I partially count, perhaps the name gives it away ;)  American, but Italian family and working on getting my Italian citizenship.

Gonna have to get EU imports of these three games though – and frankly, even if NoA decides to localize them I’d rather support the European division anyway just due to how each side has handled these.

        • Guest

Wii U will be like Gamecube and have stronger third party support. Plus its more powerful than Ps3 and 360 so they are probably betting on better third party support. Thats why they are ignoring Wii titles….preparing for Wii U now.
But i really wanted Zangeki to be on that list too…

  • Shinji Kazuya

    Oh my god!
I can hardly believe this! First Xenoblade Chronicles, then The Last Story and now Pandora’s Tower. I know this doesn’t mean it’s already coming for sure but the chances are certainly high now.
I always used to say stuff like “Damn, wish I was North American: they always get stuff that we don’t!”, but right now I’m happy to be European. ⁀ω⁀

  • Shinji Kazuya

Same here Francesco. I’m already extremely happy that we are getting Xenoblade Chronicles in September and The Last Story in 2012. Pandora’s Tower will be my “cherry on top of the cake” if we get it. :>

    • Absolutely!! Xenoblade will be a D1 buy for me! Same The Last Story and, if confirmed, Pandora’s Tower (which is actually the one I’m waiting the most, slightly more than Xenoblade, which I’m already dying for playing!). I really really REEEAAALLY hope Nintendo will officialize it as soon as possible.

      • Shinji Kazuya

YES! Xenoblade will be totaly a day 1 buy for me. The special bundle and all (even though I already have the Classic Controller PRO that came with Monster Hunter TRI). And, of course, The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower will be a day 1 buy as well.

  • ninjaonizuka

i got pandoras tower…..fave wii game and WTF y is europe getting all this  =3=” i hope its dual audio i do not like english accents….

  • anxiousheart

another win for Europe… NoA hates Americans -__-

    • thebanditking

They don’t hate us, we are getting Mario Party aren’t we?

  • Shinji Kazuya

Same here Francesco. I’m already extremely happy that we are getting
Xenoblade Chronicles in September and The Last Story in 2012. Pandora’s
Tower will be my “cherry on top of the cake” if we get it. :>

  • AQuatermain

    NOA hates her fans, depriving us of those games. That makes me so sad ;_;

    • Hraesvelgr

Her? Isn’t Reggie the personification of NoA, though?

  • SirRichard

Possible Pandora’s Tower localization in the works?

Oh Nintendo of Europe, I’m truly sorry for giving my Wii away.

    • Shinji Kazuya

Not good SirRichard, not good. Now you know why you must never give a console away.

      • malek86

Ahah! My Wii is still here! … just not connected.

I’d have to free up a Component input to connect it. Should it become necessary (for example, when they actually release that FF2 remake) I’ll probably have to disconnect the PS2.

        • Guest

Your Wii should always be attached from birth. Never disconnect. Plenty of component inputs to connect at or your local bar.

          • Shinji Kazuya

Yes exacly. Mine has been always been connected since birth via component. There is absolutely no need to disconnect it.

  • Guest

So before i start going crazy, this confirms a Pandora’s Tower localization…right?

I’ll be able to play the big 3 in english….oh god yes.

    • Not really, unfortunately… But we can definitely be positive about it! Let’s continue to show interest in the game and send some emails to Nintendo of Europe every now and then XD

      • Shinji Kazuya

More like: Spam Nintento of Europe mail box! :3

      • Guest

#Xenoblade, #TheLastStory, & #PandorasTower all officially confirmed for Europe! Coming from Operation Rainfalls official twitter.

    • Shinji Kazuya

I wouldn’t say for sure, but I would say it certainly has a high chance now.

      • Guest

#Xenoblade, #TheLastStory, & #PandorasTower all officially confirmed for Europe!Coming from Operation Rainfalls official twitter.

        • Shinji Kazuya

I tought Operation Rainfall was only for North America. Does it include Europe as well?

          • They extended also to Europe. But I say it’s still too early to consider Pandora’s Tower confirmed… >.<''

          • Shinji Kazuya

Yes, true. I’ll stay with my hopes up though.

          • Guest

It is for NA. Doesn’t mean they can’t post info about the games. Xenoblade and The Last Story are already 100% confirmed for EU. Pandoras Tower is being shown at Japan Expo an EU event so I’m hoping Rainfall got some news before everyone else did about Pandoras Tower localization

    • Guest

We are still missing Zangeki no Reginliev and Earth Seeker!

      • I also wouldn’t mind some Ikenie no Yoru.

      • Shinji Kazuya

YES! Earth Seeker! I wish that one would come here as well. :<
Looks like a real fun RPG!

Never hear of Zangeki no Reginleiv before.

      • Guest

Zangeki is horrible. That can stay in Japan. I was just talking about Nintendos IPs but yea Earth Seeker looks like a neat game.

      • badmoogle

I think it’s pretty crazy when you realize (by previous generation standards) that to this day we’re still not sure if we’ll play games like The Last Story,Pandora’s Tower and Earth Seeker in the west.
This clearly shows IMO how the market for console games has changed since the last generation.I think the genre really needs a new kind of “FFVII” (meaning a game as groundbraking, commercially successful and critically acclaimed as FFVII was) to really open the way for the less ambitious projects as well as to make Japanese publishers to take more risks and invest bigger budgets on their games.I have a feeling FFVersus could be that game…

        • thebanditking

Agreed Versus has that potential and I really hope it succeeds because I miss my RPG’s. Sadly Square succeeding with Versus on PS3 will not do much to shake NOA’s foundation, they have spent the better part of a decade with their head in the sand and will not likely change. Which is really crazy to me because Iwata was just on a shareholder call and said how they want to expand the market and bring games out for everyone, which seems the exact opposite of what NOA is doing here.

      • lostinblue

        Earth Seeker is not Nintendo-published.

        XSEED *might* pull the trick.

  • PrinceHeir

wow so it’s already confirmed that all 3 games are coming for Europe???

damn NOA step your game up.

if they can also nab Fatal Frame 4 that would be a huge O_O

    • Shinji Kazuya

Either Nintendo of America is just being silent about it or it really has no plans at all, which is kinda sad. :<
      They are three great games.

      • Yeah, excuse us, NoA, for wanting some quality games on the Wii for once instead of mini-game collections and the 20 trillion games with “Wii-something or other” in the title.

        • thebanditking

Again NOA and Reggie are clearly out of touch with the core market, I don’t think they even know what a gamers is anymore, outside blindly describing us as “people who play Zelda and buy more then 1 game in a 6 month period”. This is why (unless things change) Wii U is dead before it launches. How can they support a whole console centered around the “core” demographic when they can’t even release a few already localized games….

    • Gelsa

Xenoblade’s confirmed and has a release date. The Last Story has been confirmed and Pandora’s Tower have been heavy hinted at and not only by being playable at Japan Expo but when the NoE representative announce The last Story he also mentioned Pandora’s Tower without someone even asking about it.

      • Guest

But why do they ignore Zangeki no Reginliev??

        • lostinblue

It came out long ago, I’d say since it was ignored then asking for it now is unlikely at best. I’m content in getting these.

Also, don’t forget Tact of Magic and Fatal Frame 4.

  • epy

Nintendo of Europe, if you do this you will be extremely close to getting to NISA and XSEED level. I removed Atlus USA from the list so the spot would be yours.

    • Shinji Kazuya

I’m not North American but I have always liked NIS America and XSEED a lot! They are awsome!

    • What’s Atlus done to be taken off the list?

      • SirRichard

Atlus doesn’t bother with Europe, it’s a wonder people in Europe treat them as anything more than a good developer.

        • Shinji Kazuya

          Yes, very true. I never bothered with Atlus as well. It’s not thanks to them we got Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 3 Portable, etc. While not getting titles like Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor. ;_;

        • Oh, I see. That’s actually kind of surprising to be honest, wonder what their rationale is there.

          Really unfortunate though. :(

        • Hraesvelgr

Eh, I misread your comment at first, but I’ll post this, anyway.

Atlus has no European branch, so please don’t blame them for not releasing games in Europe.

          • shadowind

We know Atlus don’t have a European branch, but it wouldn’t kill them to make a bit more effort in getting their games distributed over here! If NISA can do a distribution deal with TecmoKoei Europe to get their games distributed over here, why can’t Atlus?

        • shadowind

That’s why I don’t like Atlus USA as much as I used to, because they can’t be bothered with the EU market plus the majority of their most recent releases are Demons Souls-type games as well as Western-type RPGs! It’s as if they’ve sold their metaphorical souls for short-term profit!

          • SirRichard

…That smacks a bit of fanatical over-exaggeration and Japan fanboyism, doesn’t it? I mean, of their upcoming releases, the only Western RPG on there is Cursed Crusade. That’s hardly “the majority”, mate.

And what was wrong with Demon’s Souls? It was brilliant, we could do with some more games that blend development styles.

          • shadowind

I don’t think it smacks of over-exaggeration and Japan fanboyism, to be honest!

There are games from the West that I do like, such as the Assassin’s Creed series, the Mass Effect series, Raving Rabbids, etc.

I just don’t like crap genres like 1st-person shooters which are all the same (I’m epileptic in any case, so I can’t even play them if I wanted to as it would trigger off my seizures big time!)

BTW, a lot of Atlus USA’s more recent titles that aren’t of the SMT kind have been Western-type RPG’s, which for the most part have been crap.

Don’t get me wrong, there ARE good Western RPG’s such as the ones by Bioware for example, it’s just a shame that Atlus aren’t releasing more non-SMT RPG’s.

Also, please don’t ought a copy myself)insinuate that I don’t like Demon’s Souls as I actually do own the game! In fact, I own the EU Special Edition that NamDai released last year.

At the end of the day, I still stand by my opinion that Atlus USA have forgotten the people who made them what they are and can’t be bothered to admit that they don’t want to listen to the people who made them what they used to be, a company that listened to the fans. Look at it this way, they can’t even be bothered to say on their forums whether certain games like the PSP Growlanser games will be coming out in English or whether the Super Robot Wars Original Generation Saga Endless Frontier EXCEED game will come out in English even though sales of the original game I believe were pretty good (I bought a copy myself).

          • SirRichard

(For some reason I can’t reply to your newer comment so I’m just going to have to use this one again.)

It still is over-exaggeration at best or outright lying at worst, though. It’s not “most” or a “majority”; Cursed Crusade is more of an action game than an RPG and the only other Western RPG there is Divinity II, which is actually a good game I’ll have you know. Trine 2 is based off Western fantasy, yes, but it’s a platformer, not an RPG. Cursed Crusade hasn’t been released anywhere, Trine 2 doesn’t even have a release date; I don’t know how you know they’re crap.

Meanwhile, the rest of Atlus USA’s upcoming games are SMT titles, backed by Catherine (an SMT spinoff of some kind) and King Of Fighters XIII. There’s some other stuff there (a tower defence and Mah-jong) but that’s just stuff they’re pushing to try and get money on the side. So no, it’s not “most of their recent titles”, it’s a grand total of two plus one platformer versus three SMTs and a puzzle-platformer SMT spinoff, not to mention Radiant Historia earlier this year.

Maybe it’s not that they can’t be bothered, it’s that they simply don’t know? I can’t find any sales data for the original SRW: OG Saga, so for all we know it flopped and they don’t want to risk another failure at this point. Growlanser was published by Atlus Japan; they probably need an American release greenlit by them and it’s either been denied or there’s been no decision yet. That or the PSP’s pirate-filled audience doesn’t seem like a promising prospect for anything but another SMT. They can’t publish or run after every title some overly-idealistic fan shrieks about on their forum, mate, it’s unreasonable to expect so.

An actual complaint could be that Atlus has been publishing a bit too many Naruto fighting games, but again they need the money. They’re a business, mate, and Demon’s Souls proved to them that there is an audience for the other kind of RPG, so they’re taking advantage of that.

  • kylehyde

In moments like this the melancholy of this song come to my mind

  • THe last story is a great game and i think it’s alot better then xenoblade i own both imports and jp is not poor but okay i can understand most of it but still poor in some areas.

still i hope for a english NA version someday.

    • Xenoblade, a big open world with 100 hours in the first run without making sidequest.
The Last Story, linear, 30 hours in the first run, no so much sidequests.

      Yes, of course, much better.

      • When did linearity ruin someone’s enjoyment of a game?

I’d rather have something “linear” but fun like Vanquish, if my other option was something like inFAMOUS, which was (in my opinion) boring and repetitive, despite having a massive map just for yourself with tons of sidequests and collectables.

      • Shinji Kazuya

They are different RPGs. Their differences don’t make one better than the other. They are two different but great RPGs, each with original battle systems.
While one has over 100 hours of gameplay, the other has Multiplayer and so on. We could be here all day telling the differences between one and another.
One factor remains: They are both great and awsome RPGs that everyone should have a chance to play. At least this is what I think.

      • Zanasea

It’s because of people like you that JRPG won’t evolve.

  • Boo hoo.

  • Why do I have to get the Nintendo branch that utterly sucks?

I wanted to play The Last Story more than any other RPG this generation.  Guess I won’t now.  Goddamn Nintendo.

    • You could just mod your Wii and import it

  • imaguni

I think I ought to move back to Europe if I intend on playing Wii games… Or at least get a European console.

  • AzureNova

I just hope they get localized soon.

  • XypherCode

So are they confirmed for a European release?

    • Shinji Kazuya

The Last Story is. They said the version in Japan Expo was already in English. Will arrive sometime during 2012. Pandora’s Tower is not confirmed yet it seems.

  • ARRGH WHY NoA, WHYY?!  Why do you hate JRPGs, they didn’t do anything to you!  (OK so I think Pandora’s more action but STILL!)

Though I can’t begrudge you guys in Europe, I know there’s a lot of stuff that came to Europe late or not at all in the PS2 years.

Oh Wii, why must you be region locked?

  • eilegz

now nintendo of america will you start getting your finger out of your ass and release good games here…

  • Juuu

Kudos, NoE, kudos. Thank you for making the Wii, a system meant for ALL GAMERS, really appeal to all sorts of gamers, even the niche. Hopefully, NoA will follow suit.

  • Geez all three is going to Europe and yet no plans for NA?  I really hope NoA’s 2012 schedule delivers.

And yeah I said it before but I want to softmod but no way my sister would let me (half own) and don’t like import prices so not going to get 3+ games that would cost way more than 50$ and perhaps become backordered due to insane demand from Project Rainfall.

  • I am flabbergasted that the “big three” are coming to Europe and not North America. Nintendo of Europe used to be the backward branch of Nintendo, now it seems to have switched roles with NoA. Can Nintendo not maintain competent management in all regions simultaneously?

    • lostinblue

exactly my thoughts, I’m european so I’m not complaining but damn, what the hell is going on with NoA.
