Aksys brought an early build of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus (temporary title) to E3. I played it and the one fight with Ragna and Jin was just like BlazBlue on consoles. When I met with Toshimichi Mori, Producer, I asked him to tell us more about the title, which is still in development at Arc System Works.

Let’s talk about the PlayStation Vita version of BlazBlue. I heard it will have new story modes and you’re thinking about 3G online?

Toshimichi Mori, Producer: Yeah, we have plans to add more scenarios to the story mode. It will have the two scenarios from the PSP/3DS releases and three to four more stories will be added. We’re also looking at network functions for 3G functions, but that is to be determined. We’re also adding team matches for network play, so we will have many more modes.

Will BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus (temporary title) do anything with the touch panels?

We plan to add a new control scheme using the touch panels. We’re still experimenting and working on it to see how it feels.

This is a question I think some of my readers are wondering about. You can’t put the 3DS version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II in sleep mode. Why?

Why? [Laughs.] Sleep mode is not required by Nintendo. There is an option to not put it in. For this title, it’s just part of the design. [Laughs.] That’s all I can say.

Recently there has been a resurgence of fighting games on the market. How do you feel about this trend?

Thanks to Street Fighter IV, people are playing fighting games a lot more than the past. We have been making fighting games for a long time and we’re always going to compete with Capcom to make better games. We hope the players will enjoy the all of these games.

Games trends are cyclic. RPGs, for example, can be really popular at one time and then come back later on. Action games, shooting games are like this too. Now is the time for fighting games.

We’ll have more from Mori-san later this week where we discuss action games and the possibility of Guilty Gear X BlazBlue.

“Why? [Laughs.] Sleep mode is not required by Nintendo. There is an option to not put it in. For this title, it’s just part of the design. [Laughs.] That’s all I can say.”

    So, laziness, then?

    • MizuMikomi

Have to agree with you on that one, since it can be extremely frustrating if you forget to pause, and then remember: “Oh crap! There’s no sleep mode! D:”

Thus you lose the match… I can’t count how many times that has happened too me. -.-

      • Yeah, it does sound like laziness, but I never knew that sleep mode was such a big deal. I think I’ve only ever used it once on Animal Crossing: Wild World. I guess it makes sense for a fighting game, but is it that important?

        • MizuMikomi

Well for me, it’s the fact that I abuse Sleep mode on my DS, 3DS, and PSP.

I take breaks from playing ever so often, but with CSII if I am in a fight and I start to get tired of playing or my fingers start hurting; which happens a lot when I play my DS or 3DS, I just close the 3DS thinking it will go into sleep mode… I do that will all my games when I start to get tired of playing.

So compared to the other DS and 3DS games where I do that a lot, it just seems odd that BlazBlue CSII doesn’t have it. Unless I break the habit for just one game; which isn’t exactly worth it, I will likely end up doing it a lot when I actually do play CSII, which isn’t often anymore since I prefer to play on my PS3.

        • Well, I know it really helps for people that can only play games, say, between classes (even in college) or when waiting during short car/bus rides, so the ability to be able to pause what you’re doing for an uncertain amount of time without wasting the battery is a godsend.

        • Exkaiser

If it weren’t for sleep mode, I probably wouldn’t play games as often as I do. It’s pretty important to me.

The pick up and play nature is very convenient for me. I don’t like being tied down to a console, so if I can pause my game just by shutting the lid, I’m much more likely to actually sit down and play it.

        • kylehyde

Even on the first DS the Sleep mode has been a rule that all the games on the library have followed. In psp is the same case, even since the GBA many games included that mode.

    • FireCouch

I don’t think it was laziness and I’m pretty sure most game designers aren’t lazy. They usually have a reason for things. It’s not like they have some unlimited budget that allows them to create anything they want. My guess is that the resources were allocated somewhere else.

“We’ll have more from Mori-san later this week where we discuss action games and the possibility of Guilty Gear X BlazBlue.”

I can’t wait for the discussion of a Guilty Gear X BlazBlue game! So can’t wait! =D
Also, I been hearing a lot of people complain about the 3DS version, since it doesn’t have a Sleep Mode. It would of been nice if one was implemented into the game, so even if you close the 3DS, you still won’t be running the power up.

  • PrinceHeir

“It will have the two scenarios from the PSP/3DS releases and three to four more stories will be added.”

    3-4 new characters maybe???? :D

    • AnimeRemix

Makato Nanaya, Valkenhyne R. Hellsing, Platinum The Trinity, and maybe Mu-12?

      • PrinceHeir

ehh i thought they already have story mode in that PSP and 3DS versions.

        guess not :

        • Nope, they added like 2 more stories, but not for any of the characters. Kinda like a side story.

        • AnimeRemix

The 2 stories added for the 3DS/PSP versions were called extra’s and one is about how Noel, Tsubaki, and Makoto met and became friends. The other is about how Kokonoe worked with Carl’s dad (Relius Clover) to make something…

You ca watch the first Extra story here –

And the second one here –

          • PrinceHeir

            awesome stuff ^^

Now that “resurgence of fighting games” was mentioned, I’m hoping that 2D arcade beat-em-ups (or “belt-scrollers” as what I discovered recently) should make a come-back as well. Seeing Dragon’s Crown seems to be a good start but I do hope other developers should try it. Arc Sys perhaps?

Excited to see the next part of the interview. Does this mean Arc Sys would develop action games? New IPs? Not sure about Guilty Gear / Blazblue crossover but I preferred a new 2D Guilty Gear fighting game first.

    • Did you play Scott Pilgrim?  You’d probably love it

      • z_merquise

Hell, yes! I bought it the day it was available in PSN. Great game and I also appreciate the retro touches they put in it. Only thing I hate on the game was the numerous bugs and glitches like the game-freezing during load time.

  • jujubee88

Thanks for all these cool interviews also, thanks for asking stuff on the Vita. That thing is going to be epic.

Also, if you have chance to ask another individual working on the PS Vita, could you please ask them specifically stuff on location based features and how that will impact their game(s)?

  • IceRomancer

Gotta say I’m loving the resurgence of fighting games! It’s been one of my favorite genres since playing street fighter turbo as a lad ;)

  • XypherCode

I like playing BlazBlue on the 3DS and the sleep mode really don’t matter to me. I just can’t wait for the Guilty Gear X BlazBlue topic ^_^

    • xXDGFXx

what is this sleep mode people talk about? is it when you pause the game with the home button, or where you just close the clamshell?

      • XypherCode

when you close the 3DS’ top lid the game falls into an idle state hence sleep mode :D

        • xXDGFXx

huh, i never noticed… i always had the habit of pausing my game… which fails in patapon..

oh, wait… THAT’S why my 3DS burned so much power after falling asleep for almost 3 hours!?!

          • XypherCode

so you left it on sleep mode rather than turning the system off? you should’ve left it on the cradle.

          • xXDGFXx

i wasn’t intending to fall asleep and that thing was held by my arms when i drifted off… i wasn’t near the cradle either.

  • ForeverFidelis

“Guilty Gear X BlazBlue”I cannot express the amount of euphoria that filled my head when I read that there is even a possibility of that happening.

Sure it has been discussed to death, but this is only the second time I’ll see it in an actual interview

And aaaaaw yeah. New stories. I really love this series. It’s like a great Visual Novel and a great fighting game mashed into one.

I remember hearing somewhere it was supposed to originally be a visual novel, then an rpg, then a fighting game.

    A blazblue rpg. Fun.

    • I actually read somewhere that the original concept for BlazBlue was going to be an RPG. Still turned out pretty good with making it a fighting game!

  • xflame10

Wait no sleep mode? Dah ffffffffffff- that’s just lazy………….

  • Андрей Калинин

If only they released BBCS on PC they would get so much money…

  • Lordphantomhive

    No sleep mode? Jeez…
Anyway probably will skip the PSP version too so when I get the Vita I will most likely pick CSII plus up.
