Dark Souls Lets Players Hide In A Coffin And Ambush Others For Their Body

By Spencer . July 5, 2011 . 2:50pm

darksFrom Software’s spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls puts you in the shoes of an immortal. According to news from Japanese magazines, retaining your humanity will be a key part of Dark Souls. When you die your humanity is lost. It sounds like this how Dark Souls will shift players between phantoms and physical forms.

Dark Souls, like Demon’s Souls before it, will have a world where you can see other players online. They will appear as phantoms and some may try to harm your character. Hostile players appear red and have a new trick up their sleeves. Red phantoms can hide in a coffin and ambush another player.

In danger? It’s possible to summon NPCs in Dark Souls when you’re offline. We’re still looking for more details about this last note.

Dark Souls comes out in North America on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 7.

  • That sounds scary, I would be unable to play it. Dudes popping out of coffins, wow.

    • Guest

      *throws you in a coffin*

    • kupomogli

All the cool people come out of coffins.  Vincent Valentine for instance :P.

    • KyoyaHibari

Lol Tsuna, you should be screaming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWWW4TdbEE4 ;P, I just felt like adding it in since I was listening to it at the moment, powerful song…

  • I wonder why there’s no PC release? This sounds like something that crowd would love, especially with some modding tools.

    • Zeik56

Because From Software isn’t a PC developer and thus has no experience developing for it.

    • Because us console gamers have to have something when PC gamers are being super arrogant.

Because the Japanese PC game market isn’t that big.

Because who in their right mind would play this with a mouse and keyboard?

  • Shinji Kazuya

  • The more I hear about this game, the more I feel like my hair will turn white while playing it. The devs must like sadism…

  • kupomogli

I’m just glad there’s still something similar to the black phantoms.  Demon’s Souls is amazing, but the PvP aspect brings it to a whole new level of amazing.

  • Can everyone tell me if dark souls have relation with demon souls(story)? or if you advise me to play first demon souls before playing dark souls?  Please tell me!

    • badmoogle

Playing Demon’s Souls first will probably give you a better overall idea about Dark Souls gameplay since it was confirmed from E3 that the combat mechanics are basically the same (besides some new additions) but storywise Dark Souls will have its own story, world and characters.

    • KyoyaHibari

They aren’t the same story wise which is the reason for the name change since Sony owns Demon’s Souls, but Dark is basically a spiritual successor, I advise you try Demon to get a feel for it.

  • …Nice. Because a Black Phantom popping into your world isn’t scary enough.

  • Gio32k

Why oh why must you mention this? Now that everybody knows, they’ll be doing coffin checks from now on.

  • PrinceHeir

yay time to backstab everyone ^^
