PlayStation Store Reopens In Japan With Chrono Cross, Ys IV, And Super Robot Wars

By Spencer . July 5, 2011 . 11:41pm

imageWhile you’re claiming free games with your Japan region PlayStation Network account, take note of the Game Archives section. Sony packed it with new releases like Chrono Cross, the sequel to Chrono Trigger with more than two dozen characters. Need another RPG? Check out Ys IV, the TurboGrafx CD version, it’s 800 yen ($10) too. Breath of Fire IV from Capcom is just 600 yen ($7.50).

Nippon Ichi uploaded some of their PsOne library too. Lesser known titles like The Oni Taiji and Marl-Jong! are available too. Splatterhouse, Klonoa, and R4: Ridge Racer Type 4from Namco Bandai are on the service too.

New Super Robot Taisen and The 4th Super Robot Taisen are available too for 1,000 yen ($12) a piece. Other PsOne titles like Tomba!, Twins Story, Panzer Bandits, Sengoku Dreams, Ryuki Densho: Dragoon, and Bounty Sword: Double Edge.

    Tomba? Awesome stuff.

But Shin SRW? Can’t exactly call that one popular.

    • Guest

I liked it. It was the first main SRW title with non SD robots

    • Tom_Phoenix

It was preety popular back in the day and sold very well. Having said that, unlike its SD counterparts, it hasn’t aged very gracefully at all.

      • Exkaiser

Well, I did mean popularity as in its current popularity. I don’t doubt that it sold well at all- it’s a pretty safe bet when it comes to SRW.

  • My jealousy shall know no bounds!

  • Ys 4444444444444444444444444444444444444444444. Need.

  • Breath of Fire IV!! Dang it… Will somebody bring it in English?

    • Yui

      What I wouldn’t give!
      My copy is old, and has suffered through the years. It still seems to work fine, thankfully, but I want a fall-back for the day it finally stops. Japan always seems to get the best of the gaming crop. ;_;

      • Ideally, I’d rather grab the one on PSN JP at this point. The West, especially US, has rather limited commercial interest in JRPGs these days, probably much less in old titles (except for those massively popular), so I don’t see a lot of possibility for a PSN English version. Besides, I heard there were some cuts and censors from the original JP version, so I’m curious about them as well.

        • Yui

I can understand the sentiment, but hey, what’s hope for, right? :P
Also, the language barrier is an insurmountable obstacle for me. There is no way I’d buy an RPG without being able to fully understand the text, so it’d have to be in English. :D

  • i dont mind replying chrono cross breath fire IV it’s been a decade and i still own these. i like to reply them on my psp!

A Japanese welcoming back party with Chrono Cross at the helm of their PS Store…that’s just wrong on so many levels for NA/EU. (Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of playing the original Chrono Cross on PSone.)

Thank god the Jpn PS store is not getting region locked after all (was wondering what the Jpn gov’t was demanding, but I guess it’s region free since Vita will be)..

Yea lots of new stuffs on there I was checking it out late into the night.. Not much to choose from, so I got The Last Guy and Hustler Kings for PS3 and Minna no Sukkiri and Patapon 2 for PSP.. and some free skits for Graces f.. but gotta save money for the Monkey eating girls’ clothes game and Miku Dreamy Theater 2 later :)  Not that big of a Chrono Cross fan..

I know it’s free stuffs, but I gotta say there’s almost nothing for being a Jpn Plus subscriber unlike the US counterpart..  there’s a 30-day Toro platinum pass..  and a free Catherine sheep avatar (available to everyone, not just Plus), but you can’t use it w/ your other acct..  the US store has 4 wallpapers..

I’m glad I’m able to get the Jpn welcome back package since I missed the HK one..

Dawn of Ys has my favorite Falcom produced music ever, too bad it was never officially localized.

Wish there’d be a way of patching the PS3/PSP file with the fan translation patch.

  • Locklear93

Hm.  I wouldn’t mind if Chrono Cross hit the US PSN at some point.  I always did like it much better than Chrono Trigger, though that usually gets me accused of all manner of heresy.  I wouldn’t mind Marljong, either–I have a Marljong notebook, from the ORIGINAL NIS America Online store–back in… 2005? 2006 maybe?  Unfortunately, given NISA’s president’s comment on how Rhapsody did in his recent interview, I wouldn’t count on Marl-anything here. :/

What free games can you get with JPN PSN Welcome back program

    • Here:

I feel that the collection, while decent, could have been better, especially with all the variety of fun games Japan has. And two of them are Western games; I suppose they wanted to give something “exotic” for the Japanese audience.

      • Aoshi00

BTW, from that list, Wipe Out HD will only be available for a limited time, after that they switch w/ Star Dust HD (or Star Strike) in Jpn..

Yes, there wasn’t anything great, but I got that quirky game The Last Guy and the pool game Hustlers King for PS3..

  • I wish we had Tomba! as well. Step it up, SCEA.

  • Come on, Sony, I’m getting antsy! I’ve been holding off playing Chrono Cross on my PSP for you guys, but at this rat, I’m gonna cave and put it back on!

But at the very least, at least SOMEONE got it.

  • Peter Johansson

Now this is just awesome! SRW, Ys IV… I want them!

  • cmurph666
