Sony Sends Square Enix Congratulatory Chocobo Cake

By Spencer . July 12, 2011 . 3:17am

A few weeks ago, Square Enix announced they shipped 100 million Final Fantasy games worldwide. That figure is a tally of the fourteen numbered games from the main series, ports, direct sequels, and spin-offs. While Final Fantasy made its debut on the Famicom, the series mushroomed with Final Fantasy VII for PsOne.

Sony (specifically Sony Music Entertainment) congratulated Square Enix with a sponge cake and Twitter addict Shinji Hashimoto took a photo of it.

Congratulations for the series surpassing 100 million units, the cake reads.

I will refrain from portal references. Are they really gonna eat that cake? That poor chocobo ;__; Grats to Square Enix, now get back to work! (>_<)/

I couldn’t eat that cake, if it was a Moogle then maybe. BTW that Moglamesh in Duodecim is annoying,

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I really need to play duodecim again. I’ve done several things in 000 but can’t find the motivation to continue, as I already unlocked all the charas. DJ Mog ftw

        You are a bad person.

There *is* a moogle on it. Near the bottom right corner.

    • Barrylocke89

The alternative is having a perfectly good cake go bad. That’d be even worse imo :P

Aw man, thats an awesome cake. I want one of those….

  • badmoogle

I know that the difference would be huge but i’d be curious to know how many FF’s were sold on Sony consoles and handhelds in contrary to Nintendo ones.

Mai series: 1-6 Ninty. 7-14 Sony. Not too sure, but I believe ninty has more side games excluding ports.

      • badmoogle

No i meant overall number of FF copies sold for each system separately.

Final Fantasy was never a force in the western world until the Sony games. So I imagine the mainseries is very much in Sony’s favour. However, handheld games is a different story. While the Sony SE games generally sell better in the west than the Nintendo SE games, the Sony SE games don’t sell as well as the Nintendo SE games in Japan, and the west likely wouldn’t be able to make up the difference.

“However, handheld games is a different story. While the Sony SE games
generally sell better in the west than the Nintendo SE games, the Sony
SE games don’t sell as well as the Nintendo SE games in Japan, ”

I think this is true for general handheld SE games but i was speaking for FF games only…unless you think Nintendo-SE handheld FF games have generally sold better than Sony-SE handheld FF games?

FF7 sold 2 Million Units in its release weekend in the US. That was more than the total sales of all the FFs before 7 on Nintendo in the west..

  • PrinceHeir

    awesome cake :D

    Looks friggin delicious O.o

    I sort of see this as ass kissing personally. >.>;

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

To me, feels like the opposite. Kinda a “Don’t forget who brought you to the dance” type thing. Sure, they were making FF titles on Nintendo systems long before Sony even had a system, but they didn’t start actually selling well until they came to the PS1.

  • karasuKumo

That cake better be full of Potions! Congratulations to SE ^^

  • Xeahnort

it would be funny if the cake could say: The cake is a lie!

    On topic:

No surprises here. Sony Music Entertainment  have a close relationship with S-E at the time of sponsoring anime in japan.

    • http://www.facebook.com/alwaysbored.andrade Jonathan Andrade

That wouldn’t be funny at all.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

I think thats really over.. I mean come on, the joke gets old, after every game in the world did it.

  • SolNeko

looks awesome, i would love to know how that tastes :P

I supported the series since day 1, but i dunno how long more will i support them. Versus is all i want really.

  • bugmeknot

The picture is really small but I tried translating the text on the cake. I think it reads something like, “Congratulations. Series Total. 100 million copies exceeded”.

Edit: Fail, it’s already translated between the picture and the tags, I missed it.

  • AoiKaze

I wonder when they first opened up the cake from its box, a couple of people took out some trumpets and played “Victory Fanfare” from VII (aka the Leveling Up theme)… XD

  • Tom_Phoenix

It’s a shame this milestone comes at a time when the series’ future (and that of Square Enix in general) is in question.
