Final Fantasy XIII-2 Arrives In North America In January 2012

By Spencer . July 18, 2011 . 9:08am

North American gamers won’t have to wait too long for Final Fantasy XIII-2. There’s roughly a month between the Japanese and North American versions.

Square Enix plan to release the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII here in January 2012. Japanese gamers get a head start on the search for Lightning since the game comes out in December 2011.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in both regions at launch. Comic-Con attendees can get a taste of Final Fantasy XIII-2 this week. Square Enix will have a playable build at their booth.

Wow this is great news :) Very excited for this game – seems like they are trying to address the problems FFXIII had, which I thought was a good game in spite of its faults.

Hopefully they apply this speedy localization to Versus… and Type-0…

  • Syltique

I kind of enjoyed importing it and knowing how the game was 4 months before most people outside of Japan.  This makes importing a lot less attractive.

They’re definitely getting faster with the localizations.  Hopefully Type-0 will enjoy a similar expedited translation.

  • RagnaXBL

And our buddies in Europe got shafted?, weird considering FF XIII had simulataneous release in EU and US

    • Shinji Kazuya

I hope we’ll get it at the same time or, at least, not long after :<

    • No… that’s not what we said. We don’t have European release info, just North American info.

      • RagnaXBL

        good to know

  • Wow! This is definitely Fantastic news to hear! Hopefully S-E can keep this up with the localization with Type-0.

  • o.O A birthday present for me~? *has a birthday in January*

  • nyoron

So Amazon is showing my Tales of Graces F preorder shipping on 1/4/12… going head to head with Final Fantasy again?

    • Graces won’t be done until Summer 12′

      • Isn’t it just a translation?  I mean the game is technically already made and all so I don’t understand how it could come out in the summer of 2012 (and take that long) when it shouldn’t and it should be out by spring at the latest…

    • This should hopefully mean that Tales of Graces F is coming in March. Also…wouldnt the game ship on 1/3/2012, a Tuesday?

      • nyoron

Not necessarily. Namco might ship it out to retailers on 1/3, which means Amazon might not be able to make their shipments until the next day. I think they give themselves a little extra time on estimated ship dates on purpose.

Regardless, it’s probably just a placeholder date anyway.

      • EU is Summer 2012 NA probably the same or Late Spring. No way is it going to go head on with Mass Effect 3 in March.

    • Hope Namco is smart and move the release they wouldn’t want to get trounced by FF at retail by releasing it on the same week…

  • What I want for christmas is money enough money to buy FFXIII-2 and Resident evil ORC

  • kroufonz

this time i am not gonna import jp version and not gonna buy US version and just wait for asian(chinese+english version) first:p

    • yes! duaru-audio.

      • The Asian version didn’t have dual audio.

      • Aoshi00

There was never dual audio, the Chinese ver had Jpn audio only and Eng/Chinese text. The Jpn 360 Int’l ver had Eng audio only and Eng/Jpn text.  I actually prefer the Eng dub in XIII’s case, like XII.

Anyway, this is a fast US release.  I was planning on importing it if I had to wait 3 months, but w/ only 1 month apart, now I’m not so sure… I wouldn’t even be able to finish it in a month before the US ver comes out…

  •  *fan girl squeal*

  • Consumerism at its best. Why make Final Fantasy XV when you can make a sequel that no one needed. Something like this would not have happened if Hironobu Sakaguchi-san was still with the company. S-E has fallen hard, especially the Square part. What happened to games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI?

    • Alex

Well, morever since the state of FF XIV, i’ll say that they will milk us with maybe another FF XIII after this one because i dont see them releasing the XV on PS3 before the XIV

      • Ugh any online entry of Final Fantasy shouldn’t be numbered period I never understood the logic in numbering FF11 and 14 when they were online titles it was just a bone headed move on Square’s part to be honest you could of just titled them Final Fantasy Online and people would still know its Final Fantasy and you wouldn’t have to screw up the numbering of the series. We should technically be on FF12 right now…

    • Sure, Final Fantasy XIII had its enemies and haters, but it was a good game. Was it the best Final Fantasy? No, definitely not. But if Square-Enix can improve upon the established world/mythos with better gameplay and other additions, why is that so bad?

Just because Final Fantasy XV would be a properly numbered game (and not a *insert number*-2 sequel) doesn’t mean it would automatically be better.

      Let’s give XIII-2 a shot.

    • Well said man well said and I agree totally Sakaguchi would of never allowed the way XIII was made to be released the way it was (or a sequel to happen for that matter).  Plus he would of made Kitase the director of the game and not producer.  Sakaguchi was grooming Kitase to be a lead on titles not to be the second in command (or producing).  Its funny how an artist like Nomura actually ended up getting a director’s role in the company and is one of the few in the company that still has somewhat the ideals of what Sakaguchi brought to the table when he was there…

  • AzureNova

(Looks at my Amazon pre-order list) Next year is going to be a good year.

  • EvilRedEye

I wish I’d won the big Euromillions jackpot so I could have paid Square Enix to release this in Europe but not America. Then our RPG takeover would have been complete! BWAHAHAHA!

  • I find it rather insane how Versus XIII still hasn’t come out better yet been made yet and this just came out of nowhere and its coming out. “Because people wanted a sequel of this” madness I say. I’ll pick it up IF it is better than XIII the only thing I like about XIII was the battle system so this game should have the same if not an  improvement of it.

    • Guest

Yes that IS crazy. Versus XIII better be like game of the decade by the time it comes out or there will be blood

    • if you read about it, its better than XIII.

    • The way I see it, the longer it takes for Versus to come out, the better the game’ll be. They’ll be going into full production soon…

  • This is way earlier than I expected XD. I expected the “early 2012” to mean February at earliest.

    Thank you SE :)

  • runesong

…and now I know when to take a week off so I can fully immerse myself in this gem in the making.

    I absolutely cannot wait!!!!

  • Guest

Isn’t January a dead month? Or is that for movies?

  • Zonic505

A shame they couldn’t get this out before Xmas, but hey, least I can get this w/ either money I get or as a late gift.

  • Lich King

Simultaneous release suddenly is not a good option anymore, eh squareenix? :P

  • cant wait to import!

  • eilegz

good news, i can hope for japanese voice included right?

    • inori_risingsun

i dont think so about including that in NA/EU but hopefully it will,…

hope this game make an official Asia Version(easily referred as undub) just like FF13 and Dissidia 012 did before,…

  • Well yay for that.

  • ZBaksh386

    Need my ps3 first

  • Shinji Kazuya

I started a new file on XIII last five days ago or so :p

I’m currently on Chapter 10, Fifth Ark after defeating Barthandelus for the first time. It’s still like it was months ago: great and awsome RPG. It’s a really nice game: Great story, graphics, music and battle system.

Seriously, I don’t get all this XIII hate > <

    • theworldofnoboundries

Well i think if u said that the story,(especially) battle system great? U must be trolling. If it is graphics and music i can still accept but even the battle system where u only need to press one button? that i can’t accept.

Sorry if i am too harsh but really even thought i finish the game i still feel that the battle system is not fun to use.

      • Right, because in FF1-12 you pressed something other than X (Excluding Limit Breaks), right?

        • lol its not that its one button the problem lies in what you can do in the battle system and compared to the first 12 games in the series in 13 you couldn’t do a whole lot with the battle system…

          • In FF1, You were either forced to simply attack for the majority of the game( Warrior, Monk, thief) or you could cast cast some spells. Same with 2.

3-6 brought some exclusive skills per character, but mainly it was the same (Attack, Magic, repeat). 7 and 8 Added more direct customization (6 did something similar, but it was more character-based, whereas 7-8 were dependent on certain equips), however it still came down to Attack/Magic, with some Limits thrown in. 9 was extremely similar to 4. 10 Allowed for more customization, but it was similarly limited like 13 is. 10-2 is essentially the precursor to 13, gameplay wise. 12 made it so you could play the majority of the game without pressing anything, making it actually less interactive than 13.

In 13, your options are limited, however, they are not as limited in most regards as they were in 4 or 9, 2 of the games people consider the highest quality of FF. Paradigm shifts actually allow for more versatile combat scenes, as there are more ways to defeat any opponent in the game, allowing for people comfortable to one playstyle to play the way they choose as opposed to their being a mandatory “best” setup.

      • he must play the game on auto battle

      • Battle system was a major problem I didn’t like the system they implemented at all I mean really an auto battle? Why Square thought that was what people wanted is really beyond me…

        • Auto Battle was completely optional, so there’s no reason to complain about it. I personally found it very helpful, as it made the tedium of clicking commands much faster. If I’m only going to click attack anyway, I’d much rather press the button twice than press it 4-8 times.

    • Because anyone who hasn’t played 1-10 is getting this ideal that XIII is in the same realm of a title that those where when it isn’t and its the truth unfortunately.  Sorry but i’m someone who’s played the series since the original and to say that XIII is anywhere near those first 10 as far as characters , story and gameplay and more is just crazy to me personally and I have played XIII it just doesn’t suck me in at all like the first 10 did… and I can go on about the flaws of XIII but i’ll save that for another time lets just say this I hope that Square-Enix has learned there lesson with this sequel and actually fixed the problems with the original game.  It seems from what i’ve seen of XIII-2 so far that they’ve somewhat fixed some of the problems but still haven’t fixed some either so we’ll see I guess…

      • DlanorKnox

If you think every one of the first 10 Final Fantasies has stronger characters, stories, and gameplay than XIII, then I have to ask if you’ve played any of them recently. I mean, I would call Final Fantasy III (Japan, not US) an outright bad game. And they didn’t really begin to focus on characterization until IV (US 2).

      • What exactly about the Gameplay of the first 10 is that different from 13 . You press X/O to initiate a command, occasionally pressing another button for very context-specific actions. Now you tell me that that doesn’t describe the gameplay of Every Console FF bar 12.

As far as stories go, I’m with DLanor. To say that FF1 has a better story and presentation of it’s story than FF13 is laughable at best (This is before taking rereleases, novels, etc into account. Just the first version). Don’t even get me started on the memorable protagonists of FF1. They were just so unique and well-developed.

        • Exactly. I hate all these comments I’m reading about holding down the X button to get a platinum and all that… wasn’t the other games like that, too? I remember holding down X to beat FF7, 8, 9, 10, 12…

  • Yes!!! Now all we need is the date of the release since we know the month. :D

  • This is such good news! I can’t wait to see the final party roster, because Lightning is looking epic and Noel is lookin like quite a beast!

  • cant wait

  • Roses4Aria

I was thinking it would be more like March, so I’m glad to see that we’ll be getting it earlier than expected.  I’m really looking forward to this!

  • Can’t wait for it to come out. F the haters!

  • PrinceHeir

yay it won’t be a long 3 month gap :P
