Lollipop Chainsaw Is Grasshopper Manufacture’s Zombie Killing Game

By Spencer . July 19, 2011 . 5:36pm

chailolBack in February, Siliconera reported Grasshopper Manufacture was developing Lollipop Chainsaw. Now we have more details about the game, thanks to early leaks from Famitsu.

You play as Juliet, a student at San Romero High (said to be set on the West Coast, I suppose California?), who is a descendent of a long line of zombie hunters. Zombies invaded her high school and you have to take them out with your chainsaw. Juliet is said to be an acrobatic heroine and will use cheerleading moves in the game.

When you kill a zombie the game splashes pink-colored blood on the screen. That’s because the game is supposed to have a pop feel to it. Kadokawa Games will publish Lollipop Chainsaw in Japan. The game is in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

  • Sounds sweet! I was wondering when was there going to be some news on the game

  • This sounds amazing. I hope the slow sales of Shadow of the Dammed doesn’t discourage them for considering this for a world release.

    • puchinri

Well, NMH sold better here than it did in Japan (and wasn’t that enough to bring on the development of 2?), so maybe they’ll have faith in us~.

  • I like how casual the description is in addressing the chainsaw, as if having it is completely normal.

    • puchinri

Lol, right? “Oh, she has a chainsaw. And she uses cheerleader moves! :’D”

  • Kris

A zombie game. About a cheerleader. In a long line of Zombie Hunters. With a chainsaw. By Grasshopper.

  • Grasshopper? Zombies? Hopefully using all the humor from the No More Heroes. Yes.

  • Draculoid

Great name! I’m definitely excited for this game, enjoyed Shadows of the Damned but not as much as No More Heroes or Killer 7. Hoping they can turn on that Suda 51 crazyness just a liiiittle higher for this game, which from the sounds of it, won’t be that hard.

  • Trisagion

Oneechanbara but with chainsaws and a cheerleader?
    Count me in!

  • z_merquise

Man, that’s why I love Grasshopper Manufacture. They can make the weird and awesome come together. Excited to see more details.

Going out-of-topic for a bit here, it was kind of sad that Shadows of the Damned get low sales even with the positive reviews it received. I freakin’ love that game. (Would there be a playtest for Shadows of the Damned in Siliconera?)

But I’m sure that sales from Shadows won’t stop Grasshopper in creating games that are out-of-the-ordinary as they are known for.

    • puchinri

Haven’t most of their games had relatively low sales though? If it hasn’t stopped them so far, I’m not sure if it ever will. I do hope for more success (in sales) to them in the future though~.

Maybe zombies will be enough to get this game more sales. (Zombies are the current in thing, right?)

  • kroufonz

let see if this game sales will have suda effect? (I hope it is not)

  • I was going to say “ANOTHER zombie game?”

but then I was like, “It’s from Grasshopper. TAKE MY MONEY”
Can’t wait to start seeing some screenshots or something.

    Towel, please.

  • Darkrise

Another Onechanbara-esque game? Count me in. =D

  • imaguni

Sold, when can I preorder, etc.

  • AzureNova

Do want! This sounds like its gonna be full of randomness and fun!

  • Heck yeah! This sounds like my kinda game. Grasshopper, take my money you insanely awesome developer you!

  • come to america please ! LIKE CATHERINE ! :)

  • puchinri

That sounds charming and fun. Seems Suda likes using Cali lately too (woohoo!). I was talking to someone on the NMH comm, and I mentioned how Suda hasn’t had a true female protag (that I know of, and I mean just a game w/just a female protag).

But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see a female protag from him or not, but we are now, and I’m interested~.(Er, well, curious.) …And I expect crossover art of her and Shinobu.

Between this, Rodea and Earth Seeker, Kadokawa has a number of interesting games they’re publishing. I hope we see them all.

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

Glad to see Grasshopper giving the HD systems lovin’. Loved Shadows of the Damned and can’t wait for this…

Although a New Game+ might be a good idea this time.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Sounds trippy. Hopefully it’s more fluid hack n’ slash than NMH.

  • Uh… zombie hunters? I assumed that zombie apocalypse meant it only happens once. Being a zombie movie fan, a localized invasion sounds kinda funny.

But I’m assuming these are a different brand of zombie, with some grasshopper wackiness. So I’m all down for it!

Also: Juliet and San Romero. I know “San” and “Sans” is a different thing, but is this some symbolism here? A Juliet in a Romeo-less world? :O

    • Kris

San also means “Saint’ in Spanish. :)

    • mikanko

It’s just an ode to the filmmaker.

Kinda like having a Chainsaw called a Blues Cambell.

  • Was Romero not one that defined the Zombie Genre?

Anyway, sounds nice. Look forward to a good SUDA51 Trip ;)

  • MarkMario

    Zombie Killing Cheerleader sounds nice.

  • Man, this sounds lolz-worthy.  Also, for some odd reason, Kore wa Zombie desu ka came to mind when reading this as well.

  • Guest

I need my Oneechanbara fix and this sounds like it could be a good substitute so I’m pretty excited about what I’m reading.

  • z_merquise

I found the scan for the game:

And that living decapitated-head-guy looks like the sidekick of the main heroine similar to Johnson of Shadows of the Damned. It wasn’t known yet if Suda 51 would be the director of the game.

    • PrinceHeir

      reminds me of Oneechanbara :)

hope a cameo of Aya or Saki ^^

cannot wait for this, i still have yet to buy shadows of the damned. yes i should be ashamed of myself.

      damn summer classes.

oh and Move Support please :P

  • ZBaksh386

its a wait and see though because i dont have a lot of fate in japanese developers pulling off strong female characters.

  • A ‘pop’ zombie game with pink blood and a female cheerleader lead?
    Sold!  Grasshopper, never change.

  • hystzen

I was sold when i saw Grasshopper Manufactures

  • Suda weirdness :P I’m currently looking forward to this more than I was with Shadows of the Damned. And I’m not saying that just because you as a HighSchool girl or anything….:3
