Sega Shutting Down Shiren The Wanderer DS & Wii Servers In Japan

By Spencer . July 27, 2011 . 1:48am

Sega Shutting Down Shiren The Wanderer DS & Wii Servers In JapanMystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, Shiren the Wanderer DS 2, and Shiren the Wanderer 3 (aka Shiren the Wanderer in North America) will go offline in November. Sega is shutting down the servers for all three titles on October 31.

That means features like online leaderboards, time attack rankings, item/dungeon trading, and the novel rescue system won’t work anymore. Sega made this announcement in Japan, so it’s unclear if this will effect the North American version too. The Wii game, Shiren the Wanderer which Atlus USA published, does not have online features.

Shiren the Wanderer 4 will still have its online features enabled since Sega was not involved with that Nintendo DS game.

They’re doing this so they’ll have enough servers for PSO2, aren’t they.

      I don’t think that’s quite how networking works, actually…

Shame that niche titles don’t take a more sustainable route with online features.

Bangai-O DS for example, the map trading uses sound files instead of an online server to swap them. Genius.

…ahh, the memories of being ranked #1 worldwide (even if only for a few hours)…

^_^ good thing they included password rescues, so it won’t necessarily cripple the experience.

I wish the whole “it has online features” thing would be thought future proof from the ground up.

There is no such think as future proofing with online features because a company will ALWAYS drop online support once it’s deemed to no longer be in their best interests.  It’s also one reason why I’m very careful about just what online functionality is required with a product because eventually, there will not be any way for it to work properly.  This isn’t so bad with nice to have features, but if you need it as some sort of protection scheme or to play the game at all, it will be game over when the server(s) end(s).

sega and their servers.. are they really that broke or are these games just selling badly?

Don’t remind me. I’m still bitter about losing my PC/PS2 Phantasy Star Universe characters in 2010. I’ll always remember you, Delphina and Hotsuma!

Since i bought PSPortable 2, when i see “SEGA” and “shutting down”, i expect the worst.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the U.S. server for Shiren 1 was already shut down a good while ago. And of course we know online was taken out of Shiren 3, U.S.

Well if people aren’t playing too much on the servers anymore, it makes sense. That’s one bad thing about games with heavy online play (which fortunately Shiren really isn’t from what I’ve seen), once the server is gone, you lose a big chunk of gameplay. I remember getting N+ on the DS and being disappointed when I saw that the servers for that game had shut down.
