Before A Rush Of QTEs, Asura’s Wrath Has On-Rails Fist Shooting

By Spencer . August 4, 2011 . 2:30pm

Most of the videos of Asura’s Wrath show Asura fighting Wyzen, a cocky boss that dwarfs a planet. He tries to crush Asura with his finger, but Asura defeats him by pummeling it with his four arms. This part is a button mashing sequence for the player. Complete it and Wyzen turns into orange space dust.

That’s actually the end of an Asura’s Wrath episode. Yes, episode, like a TV show or serial drama. At the beginning Asura an average, enraged demi-god with just two arms and Wyzen, albeit more portly, is roughly the same size. It’s a fair fight, so there aren’t any QTEs (quick time events). Asura has a light attack (circle) and a slower heavy attack (triangle). He can jump too and throw spirit fists by holding down square. You can aim this rapid fire attack by moving a cursor with the right analog stick.

The fight continued until I maxed out Asura’s burst meter. An icon flashed informing me to hit R2, which switched the game into a QTE sequence. Instead of random buttons, CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama explained they wanted to link attacks to specific motions. You move the analog sticks down to make Asura stomp his feet, for example, and pull them away from each other to make Asura extend his arms.

I completed the QTE scene, but the fight wasn’t over, it was just getting started. Wyzen grew, threw Asura, and the game changed from brawler to on-rails shooter. Asura ran towards the Godzilla-sized boss on his own. I had to hit Wyzen using the rapid spirit fist move and dodge missiles by moving left or right. Again, the goal wasn’t to scrape away at Wyzen’s life bar. It was to build up Asura’s burst meter which changed the scale of the fight again.

The next phase had Asura parallel to Wyzen. I fired more fists to hurt Wyzen, but reflecting missiles by pressing triangle just before they hit Asura boosted the burst meter faster. In the next sequence, Asura scaled up Wyzen by leaping on flying rocks. The perspective changed again and now Asura was falling towards Wyzen, like a skydiver about to land. The shooting sequence continued with Asura blasting away with his fists and tossing missiles back with a cool looking somersault move.

The battle continued all the way to the start of this article. In the spirit of the game and their vision I’ll say… to be continued with our Asura’s Wrath interview.

Sounds pretty cool, though I do hope they mix this up a bit instead of making us do this every boss battle or every other boss battle. This will likely be the first original IP I’ll be buying for my PS3 if I don’t pick up Shadows of the Damned or something else before it’s out. Looking forward to the interview.

      Where’s

      Vanquish
      Fist of the North Star
      Bayonetta
      Catherine
      El Shaddai

and some other names I can’t recall on your list?

      • Kibbitz

Let’s go down at least the list you’ve provided.

Vanquish – keeping eye out for 2nd hand, usually don’t like run and gun games.

FOTNS – Hokuto Musou? I do own it and I love it lots, but I don’t really consider it that original since it’s a Musou engine derivative.

Bayonetta – Friend owns copy, haven’t played, plan on borrowing instead.

Catherine – While the story looks good, the gameplay does not appeal to me and I’m honestly not the kind of person you sell story-based play on. Will buy if I revise my opinion after borrowing a copy, otherwise, pass.

El Shaddai – I’ll give you this, totally forgot about it.

Also a bit tapped out on the money department after putting in orders for To Heart 2 DX Plus and 2nd SRT OG, so I need to borrow more and buy less, I’m afraid.

If i had seen this post without seeing who wrote it,i’d still have known that it was written by cowcowcow lol.:p

        • Kibbitz

Eh, well, I think it’s not my first encounter with cowcowcow too. Think last encounter was me saying that I had nothing to buy a Wii for, and the same thing happened =P

This game has a lot of potential, especially after CC2′s excellent game direction with Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, but going off of the gameplay and trailers I’ve seen so far, AW is looking to be a shallow button-masher with fantastic visuals. Simply using the gameplay systems of the Naruto games won’t be good enough for a quality full-on 3D action game, especially after the bar set by Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Don’t let me down CyberConnect2, you’re one of the few game developers left that actually put a lot of passion into their games.

This game sounds so crazy and looks so cool:) I really wouldn’t expect CyberConnect 2 to make Japan’s answer to God of War (literally; Asura is the Buddhist God of War…well, Wrath, technically. I guess. Same difference), but I’m glad they’re doing it. And they’re going so crazy and over-the-top with it. God of War and Castlevania Lords of Shadow really up the bar for cinematic action-adventure titles; Asura’s Wrath needed to step it up to stand next to games like those. And it definitely looks like it has:)

Wasn’t a video of this whole fight available on gametrailers since E3 (it was split into 8 parts or something)? I remember the choreography and pacing being really good, but QTEs were abused. I recall a lot of button mashing… Still, I hope the other battles are not that QTE heavy, this game looks promising.
