Was Cry On In Development For PlayStation 3 Too?

By Spencer . August 8, 2011 . 1:30pm

Was Cry On In Development For PlayStation 3 Too?Before Mistwalker announced The Last Story, Cry On was their big RPG project. The RPG which followed a girl and sand giant was supposed to make players shed tears. AQ Interactive was the publisher, but they canceled the title in December 2008.

Cavia, developer of Drakengard and the PlayStation Ghost in the Shell game, was working on Cry On. While the game was announced for Xbox 360, an environmental artist from the studio says Cry On was being made for PlayStation 3. The artist’s LinkedIn profile also notes Cavia developing a toon style action adventure game for PlayStation 3, as well. This title was not announced.

Nier was the only PlayStation 3 game Cavia completed before they were absorbed into AQ Interactive, which recently merged with Marvelous to become Marvelous AQL.

If this I true, not that it really matter what with the game a while canceled, then what happened to Sakaguchi’s issues with Sony?

I’d ask if this meant we might see a Mistwalker title in the PS3, but I think he’s had it with HD consoles in general.

    • Skua

The only thing Sakaguchi said was that he didn’t like Ken Kutaragi, who was eventually ousted from Sony anyway (as for Nintendo, there were previously issues between Hiroshi Yamauchi and the Square executives. However, that hasn’t prevented succeeding managers from doing business).

Mistwalker’s prospects have everything to do with publisher interest. Microsoft, AQI, and Nintendo came knocking at their door before, but that interest has largely waned. You can attribute this to the JRPG decline.

      • godmars

Except that Kutaragi was technically gone long after the fact while Sakaguchi was using him as reason why he wasn’t making a PS3 title. Has gone on to complain about the cost of making HD games in general which is why Last Story isn’t even on the 360.

JRPGs are in decline this gen because Square if not Sakaguchi tended to set the standards of what a JRPG was since the PS1 and SNES era. They failed to do so this time around.

        • Hraesvelgr

There have been plenty of good ones this gen, even with all the mediocre games Square Enix has put out. Most of them are just on DS or PSP.

Frankly, I’d say the same was true during the last gen, too. They really lost their touch after the first PlayStation, in my opinion. I think it’s largely because they tried more things back in the day, whereas almost all they put out anymore is Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or Kingdom Hearts. I know Square lost a lot of money on the Final Fantasy movie, but they have systematically axed so many of their past franchises in the last decade.

          • godmars

Yeah, the general rut started during the PS2 era with no one ready ready for HD consoles which is where the problem is. Not the DS or PSP.

Pretty much suspected things were going to be when I heard that sprite based graphics and animation would be cost prohibitive on the 360 and PS3.

  • Syltique

If it was from Cavia, you really would shed tears.  This is one of the biggest disappointments this gen.

Is Mistwalker even still a thing?  It’s so hard to tell with them.

    • godmars

Haven’t heard anything from about Last Story. Doesn’t look like it sold all that well in Japan though it reviewed well and Nintendo’s pretty much screwed them on bring it to the US at least. Who knows?

    • Ryos

Between Mistwalker and Cavia, I think the game could have been something special, but that’s just hypothetically speaking.  Hopefully they aren’t abandoning it altogether now that Cavia’s defunct. :( I have to admit I’m curious what Mistwalker’s up to, though they’ve had a lot more releases in Japan than here…unfortunately.

    • http://twitter.com/manasteel88 Mana

Mistwalker is definitely a thing, it’s just the fact that they partnered with Nintendo on their last two projects.  Nintendo of America can’t be bothered to put these games on shelves during their 3DS push so these games will fall to the wayside even though they are English translated.

So they’ve had 2 games released and nobody to publish it in North America.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Well, it made us cry anyways…

Knowing that they made Nier, I wish we got a chance to see this game…it sounds interesting…but maybe in the future or not :l

    • http://twitter.com/manasteel88 Mana

It’s the oddly creative Cavia and the king of JRPGs Hironobu Sakiguchi paired together.  If anything, this game would have been really interesting.

  • Aoshi00

I still haven’t given up on this project… I hope one day the Gooch, Uematsu, and former Cavia would come back to do something w/ this, doesn’t matter what system is on.. could even be the Wii U lol..  I’m a fan of most Mistwalker RPGs (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, ASH, Last Story) and Nier was so good.. and this looks a little like Colossus..

    • mikanko

You’re forgetting the head artist from Panzer Dragoon Zwei was working on it!  That right there pretty much sold me the game.

I have a feeling the project is probably dead and buried by now.  It’s my understanding that Cavia people aren’t without jobs, just restructured around inside a bigger AQ interactive, with the other people who did grunt work on Mistwalker’s titles, Artoon, Feelplus etc.  I hope I’m wrong though.  I also hope the Gooch can find the money to develop with a PS3/360/Wii-U sized budget again, and maybe something without a system exclusivity deal behind it so they can finally cash in.

      • Aoshi00

Yeah, I forgot to mention the artist, but I thought it was Fujisaka Kimihiko right, the artist of Drakengard and Last Story, I love that guy and bought both of his artbooks… that would’ve been a dream team.. Come to think of it, I think the art design was juggled btwn him and the Panzer Dragon Zwei guy wasn’t sure who they were finally going to use since they both did some concept arts..

I’m not sure if AQI is fully utilizing the staff either.. I also do hope they make a multiplatform high budget title in order to get the sales.. the Gooch never gets a break..

        • mikanko

I know Manabu Kusunoki was supposedly tied to a lot of the concept art that was floating around early on, but I believe Kimihiko’s stuff was there too.  A handful of key Team Andromeda/Smilebit people that worked on Zwei and Orta are listed with working credits in Artoon, Cavia or Mistwalker at one point or another, and I remember hearing that Cry On would be the first game in a while that some of them were getting to work with each other again.  I miss PD, and would love to see a decently budgeted next gen title get made with that art direction.

A few of them are working on Project Draco now, and I really hope it doesn’t meet a similar fate, even though I’ll partly curse it as only thing I’ll ever get a Kinect for.

          • Aoshi00

Yea, Project Draco is one of the games I really look forward to as well, and Child of Eden worked quite well w/ Kinect as an on rail shooter.. the Fitness, Kinectimals and other titles are fun.. but we need some hardcore ones.. and Rise of Nightmares is too gory for me..

          • mikanko

Having not seen anything for Draco since TGS I’m a little hesitant to keep my hopes too high.

      • PrinceHeir

what happened to Aq Interactive actually???

i know Feelplus, Artoon, and Cavia were absorbed by AQ, then AQ was absorbed by Marvelous Entertainment.

it there something wrong if a company is being absorbed by another???

would they fire all the people that had worked on the previous company??

i mean technically Marvelous owns the IP of pretty much every AQ game which includes the above companies. though im not sure about Nier since it was published by Square Enix

Aw…no concept art. Just, like, a guy’s LinkedIn profile or something. Disappointing.

Still, of course it’s disappointing. Cry On sounded really cool and it’s canceled. No chance for a happy ending whenever you’re talking about it :(

  • z_merquise

So the title of the game was Cry On.

Siliconera, just wanted to say thank you for showing the title of that game. I saw this image of a young girl and a golem at NeoGAF a long time ago and I really wanted to know what’s the title and who developed it.

It’s just too bad that it’s cancelled. I hope they revive this project and release it in the consoles.

    • PrinceHeir

yeah would love to see any other Mistwalker’s Work.

for those who want to see the other screens of Cry-On

      http://www.unseen64.net/2009/04/25/cry-on-x360-cancelled/

      such a beautiful game T___T

      • z_merquise

Wow, thanks for sharing that. The concept and artwork instantly interest me. Reading that article made me more sad that it’s cancelled.

After discovering the title, I immediately read old articles about this game and found that this game started production back in 2005 only to be cancelled 3 years later. I also read that Sakaguchi wanted the game to have a very strong and emotional story between the girl and her guardian.

It really looks like a very unique and epic game. I think technical limitations and budget were the main reason they cancelled it. I wish they would continue what they started here someday. Seriously, this is a kind of game I didn’t know I wanted.

        Cry On, people. *sniff*

        • PrinceHeir

kinda reminded me of ICO in Nier’s world for some reason.

oh well sucks it has to be cancelled.

arghhh why are someone like Mistwalker not getting the recognition they deserved???

would love if they could team up with Platinum Games or Grasshopper Manufacturer for some programming, while they handle the story, art and direction.

  • Kris

    I wouldn’t mind a new RPG title from Cavia! I loved Nier…

    • DanteJones

Yeah man, Nier was great. :D Especially when it got to one of the big plot twists in the game.

  • mikanko

Remembering how much hype I had for Cry On makes me sad.  Anything with art direction by ex-Team Andromeda people is pretty instant win.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

so you will see this game in Wii U too?

Why open these closed wounds? Oh it hurts. RIP Cavia. One of my fave developers.
