It’s Not Dragon Quest, But This TV Drama Is A Homage To It

By Spencer . August 15, 2011 . 1:08am

imageYes, the character in the center looks like Dragon Quest V’s protagonist, but this is not a live-action Dragon Quest TV show. The Hero Yoshihiko and the Devil King’s Castle, which airs on TV Tokyo, is a parody of Square Enix’s RPG series.

The series follows a goofy lad named Yoshihiko who begins his journey with an introductory sword and a pair of red & blue 3D glasses. He leaves his small village to find a cure for a deadly plague spread throughout the land. He’s joined by a dashing warrior, Buddha, a saucy girl, and wizard with useless spells. The first spell Merubu uses turns a person’s nose into a pig nose.

The Hero Yoshihiko and the Devil King’s Castle is being made with Square Enix’s cooperation. The video game publisher is even tweeting about it. Check out a preview of next week’s episode here.

do you know who the subber are, this has got me really intrested

      • Zero_Destiny

I found a subbers. I just don’t really feel like it’s proper to discus things of this matter here. Anyways it’s not that hard to find. Just run a google search for the Japanese name and the word sub: “Yūsha Yoshihiko to Maō no Shiro sub” It’s honestly like the first or second thing google has listed. So yeah it’s not too hard to find. They’ve got 4 episodes done so far.  Hopes that helps.

That sounds quirky and fun. I believe I have something else to watch now with my Kamen Rider and Sentai stuff. (I’m sorry PreCure, but I had to abandon you…)

    • Exkaiser

Not so sweet on Suite, huh?

      • puchinri

Lol, the sweet/Suite puns never get old. But not anymore no.
…Not until we figure out the mystery with Mephisto and his own mind control ears, anyway. …And Ako and that… Yellow Cure bit…

This show is the bee’s knee’s. It’s up to episode 6 (as of this past Friday), and available if your Googling skillz are mad. For those of you who know more about Japan than just video games, there’s plenty of gags there too; episode 5 takes some pretty decent jabs at the state of Japanese comedy and the plight of the “warai gei-nin (笑い芸人)” …or maybe I just read too much into it.

Looks like I just found myself a new favorite show! XD Sounds fun thanks for info on it Spencer.

Well I would like Hulu or CR to stream this.  If you haven’t heard the news, Hulu is going to launch in Japan this year.  Also this was announced month ago and yeah nice to see a show that parody/homage to Dragon Quest.

The fact Square Enix is tweeting about this parody means they approve! XD

I’m glad Japanese companies are good sports about parodies.

  • Ryan Sinclair

I sure hope that Crunchyroll.com will pick this up! I’m still hoping and praying for a Dragon Quest IX Defenders of the Starry Sky anime by the makers of the Blue Dragon anime.

  • blah blah

Is this a drama or parody?
    Or both?
Are live action TV series in japan drama in general?
    Well, besides sentai obviously.

  • XerosBeat

I lol’d when I read the part with the “wizard with useless spells.”
