Street Fighter X Tekken Will Have Online Features From Super Street Fighter IV

Along with screenshots of bears and a ninjas, Capcom mentioned Street Fighter X Tekken will have online features from Super Street Fighter IV plus a few "surprises". Super Street Fighter IV’s online modes include endless battle, a replay channel, and incoming challengers during arcade mode. Speaking of netcode, Yoshinori Ono said in an interview with Siliconera Street Fighter X Tekken is not using Super Street Fighter IV’s netcode or GGPO.

Capcom also set a timeline for Street Fighter X Tekken. The crossover fighting game will be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2012. A financial forecast from Capcom counted Street Fighter X Tekken sales as part of their current fiscal year. Hmm… spring is at the tail end of Capcom’s fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2012. Perhaps, Street Fighter X Tekken is a late March title?

whoa whoa let the heat from UMVC3 cool off a little…

      • HistorysGreatestMonster

The only heat coming from UMVC3 is how angry I was to see that it was disc-only, after I spent $70 on MVC3.

Most players who’ve played the game have said it feels different enough to be a new game, at least as much if not more changed than when SF4 became Super.  I can see why you’re bitter, as if I hadn’t gotten most of my money back from selling my copy of the game in June I’d probably be a little sore too.

It’s the problem with MvC3 not being as important to the upper echelons of Capcom as SF and SFXT though, and they’d rather rush the releases to get things out during months they don’t have a new SF game releasing.  If I had to make a guess anyways.

I know I defend MvC3s developers a heckuva lot on here, but they seem to have more staff in common with CvS2 and Vampire Savior(my two favorite Capcom fighters) than Ono’s team, and I hold out hope they can make a better game than MvC3 if given the time/money.  I still think MvC3 can be a very very fun game at times, but if I was restricting myself to only 1 or 2 fighting games I’d probably pass it up for others.

At least this game won’t be bare bones in content like Marvel vs Capcom 3.

  • Göran Isacson

I must admit that I’m fascinated by how this game seems to be doing so right in comparison to Marvel vs Capcom 3. Hell, MvC 3 fascinates me even though I haven’t played it. There just seems to be SO MUCH that went wrong about, it’s almost like the Perfect Storm of errors.  The cast-list was debated before it was even released, and while I can admit that some of the complaints were just silly (the roster being smaller than MvC 2) some felt valid, such as how Marvel’s editorial fiat lead to the inclusion of characters solely for marketing reasons and rights issues that was apparently easily resolved keeping classic Capcom-characters out of the game.

And then there was the net-code being (going from what I’ve heard) lifted right from SF4, despite MvC3 being MUCH faster gameplay-wise and therefore completely unsuited for SF4′s slower code. The dearth of modes, when SSF4 and even the update of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo were already released and had WAY more modes! The lack of DLC, the accusations of content already being on the disc and just waiting to be unlocked… in comparison with Capcoms already existing stock of fighters, to not even MENTION the competition such as Blazblue and of course Mortal Kombat 9. And that’s not even going into Ultimate MvC3 and the even GREATER storm that game unleashed, with it’s accusations of nickel and diming gamers for coming out to soon, bad cast-additions, complaints that it should have all been DLC and of course, the Megaman debacle- Legends 3 cancellation COULDN’T have come at a worse time.

And I wonder… how did everything go so wrong for just THIS game? How did a game so hotly anticipated, a game made by Eighting who, according to the fighter-knowledgeable people I know, are VASTLY superior to Dimps who made SF4, and who made the beloved Tatsunoko versus Capcom (well, beloved by those who PLAYED it), go so wrong? I’ve heard Capcom pressured them to include as many characters as possible over building a stable net-code and rich online-modes, but can that alone really be responsible for ALL the hate it draws? I don’t know man. I just don’t know. It’s a fascinating thing to study, but the answer eludes me.

…. Oh, right. Street Fighter X Tekken. Uh.

… Still holding out for Zangief. Because come on, you gotta have the Gief in a game with an actual BEAR. Maybe Gief can fight Paul and Heihachi for the right to duel Kuma. I dunno. Aaand that’s about all I got right now. Man this post got out of hand, sorry about that….

    • fermented

Initially after MvC3′s release, it seemed like they were ready and willing to continue supporting the game through patches (like the unwarranted nerfing of Sentinel’s health and removal of some glitches and infinites) and DLC (Shuma, Jill, the first costume pack).

Something must have happened to the MvC3 development team during and after the Japan earthquake and nuclear fallout for them to completely scrap further plans for MvC3 and decide to release a new disc-only game.

Maybe it was just low DLC sales, or maybe the extent to which they wanted to improve the game’s engine and online netcode could not fit within the download filesize limit of PSN/XBL and required a new disc release.  Who really knows.

I just know that I got more than my money’s worth with MvC3 with the countless hours that I spent learning how to play the game and playing against other players, so as long as the amount of changes and additions warrant a new disc-only release and keeps the competitive scene for the game going, then I will buy the update.

        http://gamescom.gamespot.com/video/6330309/gamescom-2011-ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-interview

Pretty much the clearest explanation about Capcom/Marvel characters and design decisions.  Once again the hate on Marvel’s character selection is based more off people who don’t read comics, which is kinda what Marvel gets paid for.  So they probably don’t care about people still living in Jim Lee X-men and other 90s nostalgia.  I’d like to see another Spiderman rep and Thunderbolts or some Runaways, but I don’t think the cast is too bad.

There’s no real way to have an MvC3 cast of 50 characters and keep everyone happy.  Their priority should be the quality of the game itself, with fan service kept closely in mind. They’ve done that for the most part.

As for online netcode, that’s more an issue with good looking 3d fighting games in general.  Asides from VF5 I have pretty big issues with all of them.  This is really the only game with online play that this team has produced (outside of TvC, where the online isn’t exactly heralded).

Japan’s online networking is also miles above the US, which is behind Europe as well I hear, so it’s likely they just didn’t realize how badly Marvel would play here. When Japanese SF players have visited the US their reactions to how bad American online is have been pretty condemning. Our upload speeds in the US especially are just below most everyone else.

I think a lot of it has to do with Capcom rushing the game out the door though too.  They needed the game to release in 2010′s fiscal year, and probably wanted it to be away from SSF4 AE’s release window.  The interview I linked pretty much confirms UMvC3 is being rushed to stay out of SF X Tekken’s window as well(SF X Tekken is probably projected to be the more popular title for them.  Decisions like that are made by higher ups in Capcom, and Niitsuma and his staff probably don’t get much say.

It’s the nature of games being released by a big company.  Squenitaidos, Nintendo, Sony and others all seem to do similar stuff.

edit: oops, this was totally meant to reply to Goran’s post. Oh well!

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Personally, I’d put it down to the difference in the two directors.

      • mikanko

I think it has more to do with Capcom’s higher ups making decisions on when they want to see games released.  SF has a big advantage over Marvel in that they have a bigger target demographic considering the popularity in Asia so more assets and time have been allotted to Ono and his gang.

Niitsuma has pretty much said they wanted to to make UMvC3 dlc, but after the earthquake and stuff settled and they got back to working there was just too much they wanted to change to the game to fit a 2 gig patch.  Maybe it would’ve been possible in multiple dlc packs or something, but it’s not likely his bosses would’ve approved.  The 2 million units sold got them a greenlight from Capcom execs to make another game, so they started it.  Then Capcom execs said, “oh by the way, you need it done by November because SFXTekken will be next Spring and we don’t want the two games to release too close.” This apparently wasn’t information Niitsuma’s dev team had privy to when they had started, and umm, yeah lol. It sucks.

Both Niitsuma and Ono are pretty human, and neither seem to be as hands on or directly responsible for the quality of their products the way someone like Kamiya is. Neither seem to really play their games lol.

        • HistorysGreatestMonster

It’s more than that. SFIV still felt like a complete game. Obviously, SSFIV was better, but SFIV had complete endings, intros, and rival battles, it had extra modes, it had a bunch of things. MVC3 felt unfinished, nevermind the lineup. The endings are a relic from the Genesis days, the “robust story” that was spoken of was nowhere to be found, and there was the biggest problem: no spectator mode. If you’re not going to allow people to watch each other fight, why even put lobbies in the game in the first place? SFIV didn’t have lobbies. No one complained about a lack of spectator mode because there were no lobbies. Once SSFIV came by with Endless Battle, they didn’t have a bunch of cards fighting each other. In MVC3, Niitsuma said they’d be patched in, which was worrying enough, pre-release, but then said they were unable to do so after everyone had already bought it.

It just seems Ono cares more than Niitsuma does (I’m also factoring in TVC, into that equation). I know both of them have expressed a desire to bring back Darkstalkers and I don’t think I’d buy a Niitsuma-produced one. Ono, on the other hand, I imagine would put a lot of love into it.

I’m not happy about UMVC3 being a disc. So much so that if I do get it, I’m getting it used. But there were WAY more problems with MVC3 than just the lack of DLC. I can’t say the same about SFIV.

          • mikanko

Yeah, I’m just saying a lot of it doesn’t seem like Niitsuma’s doing.  He’s given a time frame he has to get things done by and he doesn’t get to decide that himself.

MvC3 was making mostly the entire game from scratch(intentionally wanted to stay away from as many MvC2 characters as possible because most of the cast just wasn’t viable, or current, and most of that games mechanics were an accident anyways).  MvC3 came out pretty much a year after it was announced, with what really seems like a rushed production to meet a greedy deadline.  I don’t know that anyone else would’ve done much better.

In the gamespot interview at gamescon that I just linked, Seth Killian said if the MvC3 team had known they were supposed to have Ultimate finished this year he joked some of them might’ve wanted to quit first.  Stuff like the game being rushed and a disc instead of DLC frankly just sounds like things beyond his control as a producer.

Ono isn’t exactly perfect.  Between the two I’m not sure who I’d want to do another Darkstalkers, but I’d prefer it to be absolutely nothing like SF4.  SFXTekken is aiming to be a spiritual successor to CvS if anything, so I’d like to see how that goes, before I trust his game designers.

SF4 hit arcade first with about the same time in production as MvC3, and then went to console six months later.  MvC3 didn’t get that luxury.  Vanilla arcade SF4 with 6(?) fewer characters and less story/content than the SF4 that hit consoles is probably the better comparison between the two.

MvC3 just doesn’t garner the same leeway SF4 gets because of the difference in profit SF4 gets from the arcade, and in general Asian popularity.

          • fermented

I think it’s a bit unfair to hold MvC3 to SSF4 standards when it was in development at around the same time as vanilla SF4, which also explains why it uses the exact same netcode as SF4.

Content-wise, MvC3 is about the same as vanilla SF4 outside of the animated cut scenes (these were pretty low budget) and rival cut scenes in SF4.  MvC3 does have a much more fleshed-out and feature-rich training mode than SSF4.

          • HistorysGreatestMonster

Training mode? Really? The mode anyone who isn’t a tournament-level fighter spends about two minutes per character with? That’s not really something in MVC3′s favor.

  • fermented

It’s not using SF4′s input delay based netcode and it’s not using GGPO, but could Ono at least confirm or deny that it is using some form of roll-back netcode?

    • mikanko

99% sure it won’t.  It’ll be some form of input delay, but input delay based netcode can still be cleaned up to be better than what was in SSF4.

    still waiting for juri

    • PrinceHeir

      yay im not alone :)

      give me my Juri :P

i also wonder if there’s gonna be “Super” version???

i mean this is some sort of collaboration(despite not working on either titles) could this be a one time deal only??

do they need some sort of approval if they were to have a “Super” version of SF X Tekken or another version of Tekken X SF??

this game looks amazing, still im very wary of Capcom’s practices and will not be buying this Day 1 sadly….

but if there’s Juri, Bryan, Paul, Jin, Law, and other Alpha Characters.

then i’ll think about it :P

I kind of like how they did Kuma. He actually shows expression, which is fitting for a bear that fights, which is far fetched enough as it is.
