Why Isn’t Silent Hill 4 In Silent Hill HD Collection?

Why Isnt Silent Hill 4 In Silent Hill HD Collection?

Silent Hill HD Collection is only a compilation of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. Silent Hill 4: The Room was left out and being curious I asked Silent Hill series producer Tomm Hulett why.

"We really wanted to focus on what we knew fans cared the most about since we needed to put in the effort to put them in HD, redo the sound, and do all these things, we didn’t want to give them something we weren’t sure they wanted 100%," Hulett answered.

Silent Hill 4 takes place in a room in South Ashfield, a town close to Silent Hill, where Henry Townshend is trapped in his apartment with nightmares. While Henry cannot leave the room, he wanders into the Otherworld and doesn’t need a flashlight or pocket radio to warn him that monsters are coming.

"If you’re a Silent Hill fan you either love 2 or 3 the best. Here, you get both of them. Everyone’s happy. If they like the HD treatment, maybe there’s more in the future, but for now that’s all we’re concentrating on," Hulett continued.

Speaking of the the HD treatment, here’s a sample of the new voice acting in Silent Hill HD Collection.

I rather enjoyed SH:4 myself, even with its tenuous connection to the franchise as a whole. Well, perhaps it’s only as tenuous as any SH game that isn’t the first or third. As long as Silent Hill, the town, appears in the game to some degree I’d say it works.

  • SalomeHarras

I would have preferred Silent Hill 1 over Silent Hill 4 (a game that wasn’t originally a Silent Hill game anyway), as it makes more sense from a storyline perspective.

    • Peter Robertson

Silent Hill 4 was going to be a Silent Hill spin-off by the people who made Silent Hill 2, but was so good they pushed for insertion into the main series.  It is hardly a slight on Silent Hill 4.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EUSPDCE22Z6ETYY3W5XRZ2SFZU Darrel

I’ll take the new voice acting over Silent Hill 4. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn has such a nice voice.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Should of put it in there anyways, it wasn’t a horrible game and the whole room concept was neat and creepy.

  • badmoogle

I’ll try not to say anything about the new VA and Konami due to respect to the series (dead) legacy.Much’ve been said already about it in the last few days…

I can understand their choice of leaving out SH4 though, since that game was very controversial.Personally i think it was a wrong choice to make it a SH game and it just wasn’t on the same tier as 1-3.Still it was much better than any SH that followed it.
Anyway it doesn’t really matter since i’m not getting this collection.

  • SeventhEvening

*sigh* I was really excited about this collection. But I was disappointed that they left out 4 (and 1) and the new voice acting sounds worse than the original to me.  Konami managed to make something I really wanted into something I might consider buying if I found it at a discount.

I guess that kind of sums up the whole of the Silent Hill franchise after Team Silent left…

  • PrinceHeir

sorry but i like 4 and is part of true SH games.

a TRUE fan acknowledges 4 as part of the series because it is the last Team Silent game before being disbanded. so yeah im not buying your reasoning.

i don’t even know why people didn’t like it.

if they do make another HD collection, i expect Silent Hill 4 and Shattered Memories to be bundle together :P

    • Ownalicious

PrinceHeir, your SH4/SM combo idea is the only alternative option that will make me feel better about SH4 missing from the collection. I give praise to your brilliant concepts!

  • http://twitter.com/Zach_BestFriend aDeadlyPremonition

So basically, they want to release another one in the future which would have SH1 and SH4 in it and make more money that way. That’s what I’m getting from that. Greedy gits.

    • MrRobbyM

So basically, a lot of people don’t even like SH4 and they don’t want their effort for something most people won’t even care about and thus release the games people care about faster.

  • http://twitter.com/tlarn Luu

Do people not know that Silent Hill 4 isn’t even a Silent Hill game? It was originally developed as “Room 302″; the Silent Hill part was shoehorned in to make it sell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=648351745 Francis Bélisle

And its been like that for every game since! :P

      Not really… kind of a half-truth

    • Kirbysuperstar2

It became a Silent Hill game early in development. It’s not like they made some other game and slapped SH4 on the cover.

      • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Thank you. Yeah, it didn’t initially start as a SH game, but with the amount of references it made to the previous titles it was more than an afterthought than a few fans make it out to be. It wasn’t a last minute decision.
At the very least, it certainly had the Silent Hill “feel” to it than any game since.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farid-Belkacemi/1073052585 Farid Belkacemi

Yeah and Devil May Cry was supposed to be the next RE… Who gives a shiiit ? lol

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

Okay, I was worried about the voice acting, but it doesn’t sound bad. As long as they keep the music the same, I’m happy.

As for another collection, I would assume that’d probably have SH4, SH0, and Shattered Memories on it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Davide-Schena/100000260098215 Davide Schena

And hardly anyone would buy it. They should’ve packed them all together, or at leas put 4 along with 2 and 3.

  • thaKingRocka

So is this the part where we all say how we loved 4 and 1 best? … ’cause I loved 1 best.

On a related note, there seem to be some pretty dirty dealings when it comes to the new dubbing. I do not understand what Konami’s problem is. Someone put in some good work on the game and you didn’t pay them when you rereleased the game. You made some more money on it, so give the actors their cut. My uncle had a cameo in Universal Soldier and he still gets royalty checks for like three cents every time it’s shown on television. It’s not much, but that’s how things work.

  • Mister_Nep

When I first read of new voice acting. I thought that meant taking the original actors and having redo lines. I was especially thinking of going back to certain lines that just sounded off. Didn’t think they would drop the old cast.

Not sure if I’ll get this anymore. Definitely not a launch purchase at least. Maybe down the road? Not sure.

  • Andrew Austin

Really? “We weren’t sure if fans would want two games or three games”?

    Come on, Konami.

    • neo_firenze

Being realistic here, they surely have a limited budget/resources to allocate to this collection.  So the question became whether to spread those finite resoures across three games, or to invest more time/money per game into two games and result in higher quality port.

I’m personally glad they went for better versions of 2 and 3, because I don’t think any level of extra polish can make the source material from SH4 into a good game.

    • Ownalicious

“We wanted to exclude a game that was apart of the silent hill franchise and even on the same console as the other two, and not give players more for their money even though other collections such as metal gear, splinter cell, and sly cooper do such things. We also hate SH4, and we’re sure that 100% of fans do too.”

  • http://denpanosekai.blogspot.com denpanosekai

Will SH2 be based on Restless Dreams, so we can play as Maria? (never tried it so not sure what extra features it had)

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Restless Dreams included the Born From A Wish scenario (Maria’s bit) and the extra ending to the main game, iirc. The PS2′s Best version had the Xbox’s features added to it, so if this bundle doesn’t have it you can always track down that copy. That would be cool. It’s like how with the Ico/Shadow collection we’re getting has the “added” content that only Japan and Europe got originally.

    • http://profiles.google.com/cncgamefan brandon martin

It was a really short scenario. It didn’t really add too much, except an extra hour of play since it involved a lot of backtracking.

  • Testsubject909

Here’s wondering if Jaaaaaaaames Sunderland is still going to sound as lifeless and desperate throughout.

  • doa766

because they’re made by american studios, unlike the originals

  • Gaara D.Dragon

So, for NO real reason at all they excluded The Room from the collection.
Plus, they are fucking with the SH2 voice acting.

    *Boycotting

    • amagidyne

      You’re TEARING ME APART, Konami!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

I think that’s a lame reason. I mean, I’ve no doubt that redoing games in HD actually does take a ton of work, but c’mon. SH4 is a game a lot of fans seem to dismiss; and it’s infamously known for not having started as a Silent Hill game. This is a chance to expose a ton more fans to it – like Sly 3 via the Sly Collection!

Not to mention, a “collection” of only 2 games is lame. I can understand not tossing in an emulated port of the PSX original, but it’s been remade a couple times by now. Couldn’t you throw in SH: Origins or SH: Shattered Memories (ANOTHER Silent Hill that went largely unnoticed, which is a shame because it’s fantastic).

    This collection’s lame.

Looking forward to Zone of the Enders Collection though;) Just for the HD port of ZOE 2nd Runner. I wonder if any of these HD ports will ever make it to the PSN  though, like with God of War collection’s games? That would be more convenient. I’d love to see HD PS2 and PSP games become a section on the PSN sometime…

  • http://twitter.com/Kaizin514 Bryan Allbright

“If you’re a Silent Hill fan you either love 2 or 3 the best. Here, you get both of them. Everyone’s happy. If they like the HD treatment, maybe there’s more in the future, but for now that’s all we’re concentrating on,” Hulett continued.
No, not everyone is happy, and he would know that if he even read forums and comments from the real fans and communities behind it. Yea, I think a vast majority were happy until they heard that the voice acting was getting an “uplift”. None of that fans that I have seen want an uplift. I sure as hell don’t. From what I have heard, the new voices really aren’t as good as they make it sound. Yea, the voice acting wasn’t the greatest in the original, but no Japanese produced games really were for a long time, 2 and 3 included (yes, I know there were a select few that were good or acceptable, but most games weren’t, let’s be honest). So, with the changing of the voice work, it has lost a lot of nostalgia with me. At most, this is now a bargain bin HD convert for me, I don’t feel as if I need to buy it on day one. I really want to buy this, but Konami, changing the voice work was not the way to go, I’m sure you will make some nice sales either way though with fans who never touched the originals.

  • skymap

For my the voices really made the characters. I don’t even want to hear what new Maria and James sound like.

As for SH4, it’s terrible PR to suggest that your fans dislike the game. And yeah, Konami, should have left it Room 304.

God this series has really gone downhill.

  • blah blah

I think putting SH4 in would have helped get new fans, so why not?
If Konami absolutely wants to redo graphics, they should spend time exclusively on that and keeping SH4 instead of doing new (crappy) voice acting.
AND WE STILL NEED TO GET LOVEPLUS(plus or on 3DS) LOCALIZED.
    Ugghhhh.

  • http://twitter.com/VasiliiHellsing Vasilii Hellsing

It’s very sad that “The Room” isn’t there. I know many ppl hated it, but I really loved it. It does have different atmosphere from the other games, but it’s actually one of the things that I liked ’bout it and which made me enjoy the game. Not to mention an amazing OST from mr. Akira Yamaoka.

    • lostinblue

I liked it as well. Pretty much on par with SH3 for me.

It was certainly the last of a golden age and not where the quality started going down.

Oh well, they’ll probably do yet another collection later on anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eddie-David/510079446 Eddie David

I can get it on the PC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alastair-Reid/731117006 Alastair Reid

4 was much better than 3.

    • xxx128

3 was soooooo much better than 4

      • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

eeeeee, no. even though 3 is a great game, they messed things up by giving SH1 a “logical” conclusion. 3 was an unnecessary sequel, again, the game works great on the atmosphere, sound and art department.

  • Xeahnort

    I think they were lazy

How can someone call this a “collection”. Sounds more like: Silent Hill HD Incomplete Collections.

  • xxx128

The series died after SH3. Outsourcing the franchise to shitty dev studios doesnt help much either.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Nope, series died after SH4. SH4 was the last real SH made by Team Silent.

  • Setsu Oh

if you like the series YOU LIKE THE FIRST ONE!
i sincerely hope they are redoing it just like i hope mgs1 is being remade.

With all due respect, Mr. Hulett, it’s time you stop speaking for the fans. Seriously. Not EVERYONE’S favorite is Silent Hill 2/3. Some people really do enjoy 1/4/Origins, or even Shattered Memories and Homecoming. And the way he sort of spoke down in the trailer for “Book of Memories” rubbed me the wrong way too. “Oh fans, don’t worry, we’re just changing the genre of a really beloved series and treating it like a normal mainline game. Stop worrying, it’s got Pyramid Head! Thus it is Silent Hill!”

Silent Hill has been around for a long time, and its fans are FIERCELY protective. They believe, for better or worse, that they collectively know what’s best for the series, or at least that they know what they like best. For Mr. Hulett to come around and attempt to tell the fans what they want seems like a really jerk move.

Also, where’s the Silent Hill 3 footage and screens? XD This is looking like Silent Hill 2 HD. Toss us fans of the 3rd one a bone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Davide-Schena/100000260098215 Davide Schena

“If you’re a Silent Hill fan you either love 2 or 3 the best. Here, you get both of them. Everyone’s happy.”

Funny enough, my favorites are 1 and 4.

  • http://twitter.com/thesupersakura Kristina Wright

Wow, someone spoke for some fans but definitely not all because I for one loved Silent Hill 4. It’s actually my favorite in the whole entire series, everything about it was so mysterious and eerie and I loved the atmosphere it provided (and I’ve only played a demo of it). It’s a shame it’s not going to be in the HD collection, looks like I’ll either have to wait it out and see if they’ll eventually HD it or I’ll just go buy it on the PS2 finally.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

buy the ps2 version, compilations and HD COLLECTIONS are just a waste of money and time anyway. Play the original and don´t give them your money.

  • SirRichard

The industry’s always had a few shit-talkers (Sony seems to have an entire division dedicated to it now), but between this guy, Sir Self-Insert of Ninja Theory and the developers of Hydrophobia, I’m beginning to get worried about the industry being flooded with ego-driven, dismissive gits who believe they’re right and anyone who doesn’t agree is wrong/in denial.

Bit paranoid, to be sure, but sometimes a dash of paranoia really helps.

    • M’iau M’iaut

No you are far from wrong. Maybe it was that ‘games as art’ kick, but there IS a definite aura some within the industry are not too focused on producing product for their audience.

Not saying one can’t have games with meaning, but customers first want things to enjoy – what you are feeling really isn’t that important to them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cody-Zuver/100001349977401 Cody Zuver

I used to hate Silent Hill 4, but then ended up loving it the best having played it over atleast 20 times on all modes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

“If you’re a Silent Hill fan you either love 2 or 3 the best. Here, you get both of them. Everyone’s happy. If they like the HD treatment, maybe there’s more in the future, but for now that’s all we’re concentrating on,”… Everyone’s happy? You’re doing it wrong Mr. Hulett. Silent Hill 4 was the last masterpiece from Team Silent. And what you doing here is just pure disrespect of their work. It’s like Mr. Hulett said everyone “OK, screw this, we’re not putting Silent Hill 4, and I am happy for that. Problem *insert troll face here*?”.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Well….Silent Hill 4 was defo my least fav SH games developed by the Silent Team. The game had great ideas and concepts, that just weren’t pieced together correctly. The annoying ghosts, the uberlimited space inventory and the only item chest located in his room, the annoying corridor-hole segments….

I would love for the game to have all the ps2 released SH games on then, but I come to understand their decision. These things do cost a lot of money to make, so they simply went for the most popular SH games of the bunch I guess.

  • Göran Isacson

I both can and have a hard time buying his argument. Yes, I get that sometimes you just don’t have the budget to make everyone happy. But his talk on the new multiplayer Silent Hill game makes me… wary, to say the least, to trust him to speak for the fans.

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

It’s too bad 1 and 4 didn’t make the cut, but at least the first game is available on PSN. I think a lot of people missed out on 4. It wasn’t publicized very much (even though it had a really, really intriguing trailer: http://youtu.be/cIZlIQKquNk ) and game was hard to find for a time. It has some glaring flaws, but it’s a worthwhile game for horror fans.

It’s still a solid collection, though. SH 2 and 3 are fun games. I won’t be getting this, but if I do it’d be in hopes that Konami puts the next collection out that includes Silent Hill: Arcade, Escape, and the Orphan games. Maybe the play novel, too.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

I still can`t believe that there`s people out there who don`t like SH4 (for some unknown reason) , people who strongly believe (or don`t have the brains to notice) that SH3 didn`t destroyed SH1 great ending/s, and people who actually like shattered memories, origins and homecoming…jeez, crazy world.

  • malek86

It doesn’t work like that, Mr. Hulett. When they made the Blu-ray Batman Anthology, they even went the trouble of remastering Batman & Robin with HD sound and video, even though nobody cared about that abomination. It’s a matter of completion.

So the lack of SH4 in this collection is quite annoying. At least SH1 is excusable for its very dated graphics, but there was no real reason not to put SH4 in there too.

And frankly, you could have saved yourself the trouble of redoing the voices. I bet fans aren’t gonna like that.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

What?! They put Batman&Robin in the Batman Anthology? But this is outrageous! I bet Batman Forever was there too… *sigh* I don’t want to live on this planet anymore…

  • Setsu Oh

im still found of her so i’ll be on the look out for sh 3 but i don’t hope too much. it is adaptation, not remaking.

Out the japan SH games I liked 3rd one the least ;/
    2 & 4 were my fav
    This disapoints me

  • http://profiles.google.com/cncgamefan brandon martin

I liked 2 and 3, but the new VAs sound strange to me.
Why couldn’t the previous ones be used?

  • Lord Yuppie

I want them all really. I even liked Origins and Shattered Memories. So, while I wish they could have released one huge smorgasbord (with maybe a slightly less than 20 a game cost as a bonus for paying for all of them in one bundle).

But I certainly understand it, this will reveal whether they should do the hard work for games that are anticipated to be less popular or figure fans are fine with their non-HD versions.I was really bummed about BC getting the axe on PS3 so I am pretty stoked about getting my Silent Hill back on! 2 is my favorite and 3 is certainly a good one too!

I am however concerned about what I hear about the voice acting. This could be a deal breaker. If it as at least decent this is a must purchase for me. Hopefully it will be fruitful enough that we can get our hands on HD versions of the rest, including the more ambitious task of making SH1 in HD.
