Irem may not be making any more R-Type games, but they have no problem licensing their classic shoot ‘em up. DotEmu made a deal with Irem to bring the Bydo Empire to Android devices.

R-Type for Android is a direct port of the arcade game with touch screen controls. Players can grab a force and fire it through eight levels then register their top score to online leaderboards using OpenFeint.

R-Type comes out on September 12.

    Not sure why I would want to play a shmup with touch screen only controls, but if they make it work it’s a nice game to have on the handheld.

    Dooooood. . . .
    Don’t get me wrong. I love R-Type dearly. Very dearly. (One of the first video games I ever played!) But I -like- my phone! I don’t want it breaking into many pieces due to being thrown at a wall. ;_;

    Any fat chance we’ll see the last known game (well, the last one I personally recall) getting ported over on ANY platform? I would like to play more R-Type Tactics/Command and I’ve been waiting/hoping for a western release (seeing as the first one made it.)
