Persona 4: The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arena Playable At Tokyo Game Show

Persona 4: The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arena Playable At Tokyo Game ShowHeading to the Makuhari Messe on say… September 17 or 18? You’ll be able to play Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena. The game will be in Arc System Works booth at Tokyo Game Show and on display at the Amusement Machine show next door.

 

Chie, Yosuke, Yu (the protagonist of Persona 4) and Aigis from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 have been announced as playable characters.

 

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena will be released in arcades next spring. The 2D fighting game is being built with Taito Type X2 hardware and will support NESiCAxLive, an online system for patches and leaderboards. Arc System Works plan to use four buttons and an 8-way directional stick.

 

After its arcade debut, Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in summer 2012.

    I’d be beary intrigued if this blows out UMvC3 from the water, lol.

    Persona 4 hype’s never been stronger than ever. IMO, it surpassed P3′s hype from years ago.

      Persona 3 was a sleeper hit.  Persona 4 effectively took advantage of the increased series recognition so it really owes its predecessor a lot of its popularity.

      As far as I know, MvC3 isn’t that big in Japan, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes more popular.

    I do not understand why publications keep on saying only four chacters are announced when you can clearly see P3′s MC, Yukiko, and Kanji on the character Select screen.

      Actually, the one to the far left is Aigis, but yeah the other two are pretty clear.

      I agree that one of the characters is Kanji especially since his Arcana is Emperor and Yukiko appears to be confirmed, but I don’t want to jump to conclusions. So, I left it out.

      I don’t believe the other character is Persona 3′s MC, I think it’s Aigis so we’ll have to agree to disagree there.

        Dang. It totally is. Should have at least taken a better look at the higher res screen shots. Totally looked like him in the scans.

        I saw the Fool arcana and assumed P3 MC. Forgot that after… later events in P3 (and in The Answer), Aigis could be thought of as part of the Fool Arcana. Guess I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.

        Even Yukiko is questionable. It looks kinda like her and it definitely doesn’t look like Fuuka (P3′s Priestess), but I guess P4G and the anime could completely shake up the arcanas, possibly giving us a new character.

        But that other character? 100% Kanji.

      I’m sorry to say, I don’t think Minato (P3 MC) is going to make it in this game for the reason that he died at the end of Persona 3… and seeing that this game takes place 2 years and 2 months after the events of Persona 3 it just adds to the unlikeliness of his inclusion.

        Elizabeth was MIA in Persona 4 because she went off to try and free P3 Bro from his seal. So him making it into this game isn’t an impossibility.

          In the world of Persona nothing is impossible, I guess.  I think I would prefer the FeMC of Persona 3 to be in this game before Minato though…

          I’m sorry for the spoilers, but don’t act as if I’m just a spoiler-giving troll. I’m not trying to ruin the game for others who’ve never played. It was a simple comment; I didn’t give away any other major plot details and whatnot. Hell, I knew that** SPOILER** (are you happy, now?) the MC would die before I even started playing Persona 3 despite the fact that I’m still a new fan to the Persona series myself and I still enjoyed the game. Sorry, I’m still a newbie at this myself. No offense, no disrespect intended. Have a nice life.

    Now is this going to be a full disc based title or PSN/XBL?

    I think this gen would have been a lot less difficult if some arrangement had been made for 2D based titles to be $20-$30 downloads. Instead the $10-$15 range was established, so of course they’re talking about changing it after the latter has become established and they can’t really justify the increase for terms of quality because games of quality have already been released.

      You make it sound like being 2D automatically makes the game inferior to any game in 3D and thus does not deserve to be sold at full price. I see no reason why this does not deserve to be sold at the same price as any other fighter on the market.

      Well I’m 99% sure it will be a full priced disk anyway.

      The market for 2d fighting games is greater than that.  This will be a full priced retail title in Japan. 

      At most it would be discounted to $40 or $50 in the US, but I find even that to be doubtful.

      People who play these games in arcades spend more than the price of the game at retail putting coin after coin into the machine. If it’s a good game, there’s no reason for these people not to drop 7k yen on the final product.

    I’m interested into how they’ll end up using the character’s persona’s in a fighting game in an effective manner or whether it’ll just turn out to be a generic “hyper combo” manoeuvre. Either way, it’ll be a nice fighting game complete with Persona goodness.

      With a small cast like this it’s unlikely to be very generic in my opinion.  Arcsys fighting games do a good job of keeping the characters all playing very differently. 

      They may limit the time you have your persona out similar to JoJo’s bizarre adventure’s stand limit.  Or they could be similar to drives in BB, where every Persona gives each character a different gimmick.

      It’s been pointed out that from screenshots the game already seems to behave differently in TV land.  Arcsys seems to like their convoluted systems, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

      If you never played Jojo’s I reccomend youtubing some.  It was never updated, and pretty broken because of it, but a pretty remarkable looking diverse and fun game.

        I have played JoJo’s. I actually entertained the idea that it would call in the Persona’s much like Stands, but like you said, ArcSys do like their convoluted battle systems, so we might see a hybrid BlazBlue cross with JoJo’s.

    They sure do like angled logos. Also, I wonder what they’ll change the name to when (if?) it gets released outside of Japan. “The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena” doesn’t really work in native English countries…

    I really can’t say no to beautiful-looking 2D sprites, I’m just glad the genre is still alive I guess. Definitely gonna pick this up and will be looking forward to more info.

    I’m really hoping that Aigis isn’t the only playable character from P3.  The cast of P3 is one of my favorites not just in the Persona series, but RPGs as a whole.  And strangely, Aigis is my least favorite of the bunch except for maybe Ken -_-

        It’s a misguided dislike, I know, but because of Ken, Shinjiro- my favorite from P3- was killed/laid up in a hospital for months.  Ken does have his uses in battle, however, as a healer.  So… I don’t know, maybe he’s a little better than monotonous robo-chick (no offense to any Aigis fans out there, lmao.)

          That part with Ken/Shinjiro was one of my favorite moments of P3. Disliking Ken for shedding manly tears and growing up tremendously is indeed misguided O: Also I don’t like that you can ‘save’ Shinjiro. Him dying makes for a much better tragedy.

            There’s a lot of tradegies in Persona 3 near the end **SPOILER** the death of Mitsuru’s father, the betrayal of Ikutski, Ryoji announcing the end of the world, Aigis’s destruction, etc, etc. I found it a bit uplifting that Shinjiro doesn’t die immediately in the FeMC path of P3P (since it is heavily implied that he still dies from the pills he was taking.) I don’t know, that’s just my opinion.

          For that Lovers tarot spot, it’d either be Yukari or Rise. And since Rise doesnt really fight, it’d be more plausible to assume that it’ll be Yukari.

            Rise is basically already confirmed to maintain her role as an announcing character, so if they do include a Lover’s character it would have to be Yukari.
