New Onechanbara Game For Xbox 360 Looks Less Budget

By Spencer . September 1, 2011 . 3:55pm

The Onechanbara series started off as one of D3Publisher’s budget PlayStation 2 titles and quickly evolved into a core series for the company. Onechanbara moved to Xbox 360, Wii, and PSP with the same characters and zombie slashing gameplay.

Onechanbara Z: Kagura has vampire sisters Kagura and Saaya as the leads and from the looks of it more types of monsters to kill. Same campy cowgirl bikini costume, though.

Did…  the Onechanbara series get an upgrade? For comparison’s sake a video of Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers is below.

Onechanbara Z: Kagura is an Xbox 360 exclusive and apparently "coming soon" in Japan.

That YouTube video of VorteX was recorded poorly; the actual game looks better. I *am* tempted to say that Z: Kagura looks better than its predecessor, but I’m not quite sure.

I dig the new look:) The “stylized realism” aesthetic is something I wanna see a lot more Japanese devs move towards. It’s less bland than just trying realistically proportioned characters (like the older Onechanbara’s), but also more detailed than doing straight up “moving doll”-looking stuff, like the Dead or Alive games or Project Diva. It’s a really cool style on display here.

I approve of D3′s “backdoor franchise” plan; to release a budget game that’s so original it finds a following and makes some money, than building on that reputation to keep making better and better sequels until said franchise becomes a solid, non-budget, premiere thing. Like how they upgraded Earth Defense Force for Insect Armageddon. This seems almost like that kinda step for Onechanbara.

Eventually, I could see them trying to turn this into a Devil May Cry-style premiere action game. I don’t think they’ll quite get there with this one, but it looks much improved nonetheless. Maybe this’ll be about as good as…..I’ll say, Knight’s Contract?

I’d be fine with them going that route… and honestly, it’s not a bad route to go. It sure as hell beats pouring everything you have into one title, not knowing if it’ll pay off or not.

I too really like the visual style of “stylized realism” as you get a nice sense of both worlds :) (As video games should be).

    • PrinceHeir

      agree :)

though the lack of PS3 or even a Wii version is disturbing since the Insect Armageddon and the upcoming new one are both PS3/360

come on D3 show us some love :P

Funny how the trailer never shows any action. It’s sad too this series could be like a Bayonette or DMC if they tried to make good gameplay.

    • Taiyz

It’s good enough as is (I always get the impression when people come down on the gameplay that they’re missing the point of the combo system; see Gabriel’s comment, http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/01/new-onechanbara-game-for-xbox-360-looks-less-budget/#comment-300765822 !) but there’s still a LOT they could do with the franchise.

I’m happy that the game does something different from other titles. As much as I like my Kamiya-style air combat and crowd control, Onechanbara’s the only game that really cracks the whip as far as timing is concerned.

I liked the first game, if you played on normal it could feel like mindless button smashing, but when you get the timing of the combos the game is really something else, I had so much fun mastering the combos and their timing, it was the first disc game I got 1000gp

I love what I’m seeing so far. They’ve really improved compared to the past Onechanbara games, though something feels off about Kagura but she’s still pretty hot. =P I really hope D3 decides to localize this one…

I always wanted to try this series. This one has just reignited my interest!

  • AzureNova

As a gamer who played and beat the first Onechanbara I have to say that this looks awesome so far, and hopefully it will get localized so I can play this one too. It kinda reminds me of Chaos Legion mixed with Bayonetta. Also, dat Bikini Mmmmmmmmmm =^_^=

    • PrinceHeir

aww man we need a new Chaos Legion O______O

  • MarkMario

Nice update to the game’s graphics.

I do hope it gets localized. The presence of underboob is deeply appreciated.

Whoa.  Just speaking graphic quality, it looks ten times better.  The monster design is even interesting.

It’s premise still leaves me with a shameful feeling.  It needs to follow Bayonetta’s example and add some class.  B’ put the “ass” in “class”.

    • Taiyz

I disagree, I actually got quite tired of Bayonetta’s flaunting, where-as I was able to ignore the sex appeal of Onechanbara from the get-go because it doesn’t flaunt it; it’s just sorta there. (Okay well the shower scene at the start of VorteX is impossible to ignore, but still!)

wow I came in with really low expectations but the game actually looks interesting.

  • Taiyz

Just figured I’d point out that Aya appears in the second-last shot before the logo, facing off against Kagura. I didn’t catch her the first time because the two look so similar.

Anyway, for those wanting to play as Aya, I have no doubts that Tamsoft’ll make her available via DLC just like VorteX’s antagonists. Let’s hope that she’s free like Reiko was!

Edit: You can also see Saaya facing off against Saki in the scene that takes place in a subway/underground area, a couple shots prior to what I mentioned above. Saki seems to have a slightly changed outfit.

    i just found 2 things

1.seems like tamsoft don’t even know how to develop PS3 game
    http://www.tamsoft.co.jp/company/outline.html

2.guess this game NA/EU version will coming early 2012?

  • Whoomp

I kind of liked the cheap and cheesy style of the older games but this looks great too. Hopefully they have improved/removed the cool-combo system though.

FFFF YEAH ONEECHANBARA! I’m very glad to see it hasn’t died yet! I’ve loved it since the PS2 releases! :D

  • AzureNova

I might have a reason to finally buy another Xbox. It’s been years since I’ve had one, but this looks totally worth it ^_^

  • PrinceHeir

man they really improve alot like backgrounds, more monsters now instead of zombies, but i kinda prefer the old look of the characters in the 360 Bikini Samurai Squad and Wii Bikini Zombie Slayers games:

i don’t know but Aya seems to be mature and sexy and Saki has longer hair(which is hot) then again it’s not the first time they redo the models. even in Bikini Samurai or Bikini Zombie’s weren’t the original ones. still she look just as sexy as the last one. but i just prefer the last one since it suits my taste :D

nevertheless it’ll grow on me ^^

anyways hopefully they kept the original VA intact. Kaida Yuko as Aya is sexy :)

the music is just as amazing as ever :P

but come on D3 give us some PS3 version as well :P

  • PrinceHeir

also check out the games website as well(click on left for age verification)

    http://www.d3p.co.jp/anez_kagura/

they amp the boosoms quite a bit and the whole body is stunningly good O_____O

she has less tattoo’s now compared to her old self ^^

glad to see the music is still amazing as the last one :P

  • Monkey_T

You think they’d learn by now that developing games exclusive to the 360 is a terrible idea.

  • eilegz

its really retarded to release a game that its exclusive on the least popular console in japan…
