What Happened To Muramasa: The Demon Blade In HD?

By Spencer . September 6, 2011 . 2:30pm

What Happened To Muramasa: The Demon Blade In HD?During Tokyo Game Show last year, a rumor about a HD version of Muramasa: The Demon Blade circulated on the Internet. Since a HD port has not materialized yet I asked Marvelous if one is in development.

"Muramasa is one of those titles that has a lot of history behind it and we know fans appreciate it. Like Grand Knights History, it is also a Vanillaware title with beautiful 2D graphics and we also don’t have anything currently in the development," producer Tomio Kanazawa answered.

Earlier, I asked Kanazawa if they were considering a PSP remaster version of Grand Knights History and their thoughts about Sony’s program. Kanazawa continued, "It is something we want to think about and something I think at a later date we will put more thought into."

Toshinori Aoki, Executive Managing Director of Digital Contents, said, "We’ll do our best!"

Aoki and Kanazawa will be back later this week with more discussion about Marvelous’ plans and their merger with development studio AQ Interactive.

Oh PLEASE do an HD Remaster of Grand Knights History. That game is gorgeous on the PSP, that game in HD would be just mindblowing

  • mikanko

Kinda disappointing, but only because I’d like to see the game get a better localization.

    As someone who likes to play with seafaring mammals, that have dorsal fins but aren’t whales, I don’t miss an HD port -too- much.  <.<;

Really hoping they can work something out for Grand Knight's History getting a PS3 upgrade as that's likely the only chance the game has at seeing a localization period. :/

I recall reading Vanillaware make all their sprites in HD to begin with and actually downgrades them for PS2/Wii etc. I'd think it'd be more possible than a hypothetical NIS PSP title making the jump to HD.

“As someone who likes to play with seafaring mammals, that have dorsal fins but aren’t whales, I don’t miss an HD port -too- much.  <.<;"

      Ecco?

      • mikanko

        Sure!

  • aoihana

“we also don’t have anything currently in the development…”
Muramasa 3DS is out of the question then, huh?

  • FireCouch

Informative articles like this one are the reason why this site is so good. I can’t think of another gaming news site that would ask a question like this.

  • Solomon_Kano

So no PS3 Muramasa…how about Vita then? Please?

Tis a pity that we won’t see any HD Vanillaware til Dragon’s Crown. It’d be nice to get all of their PS2/P stuff in HD too, but I suppose that’s asking too much.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Unless it is a remake of Princess Crown I rather see new games than HD remasters.  (on the other hand it shouldn’t be hard to remaster if they made sprites in high res in the first place?)

    • mikanko

      Gradriel 4lyfe~!

Since it’s completely an Atlus property, and already re-released on PSP years ago, and still not localized, I’m not sure HD remakes are too likely compared to stuff Marvelous has put out. =/

  • Advent_Andaryu

Out of all the VanillaWare titles, I’d like Muramasa on the PS3 the most. Even on the PSP or Vita would be fine with me. I just hope it happens at some point. A sequel would also be great if possible.

    • aoihana

I just want it portable is all.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

I just want it playable on either console or portable, period.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

How about asking what the chance is that we’ll even get a proper localization in the first place, then we can move onto questions about HD remasters. I don’t want to hear that it’ll be made in HD but won’t come over here, a la Monster Hunter HD. My heart can only take so much disappointment…

    • z_merquise

Yeah, I agree. I think it’s better if someone localize Grand Knights History in English first before they can think of anything else. Heck, why can’t Marvelous do the English localization?

But their answers doesn’t sound assuring to me regarding porting previous Vanillaware games in HD consoles. Also, turning Grand Knights to HD would really take a while and I’m not sure if Vanillaware had the time and resources to do that (as much as we all wanted it to be in consoles).

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Unfortunately I also don’t think they have the resources to pull off a HD version, either. Isn’t Vanillaware a relatively small team? I know they’re pretty much now pulling their efforts to making Dragon’s Crown for PS3 and Vita. Plus I’d like to see what they can do in HD right from the get go (especially for a game that has been over 10 years in the “conceptual” making).

  • SirRichard

I was seriously hoping that Odin Sphere/Muramasa HD bundle rumour would come true at some point…

Then again, there was definite “no” answer here, so I’m still hopeful.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CalientePhoenix Phoenix Caliente

Might as well just port it to the Vita at this rate if they want to truly take advantage of their graphics.

  • sandra10

Wouldn’t they have to redraw everything for it to be in HD? They should probably just put Muramasa, Odin Sphere, and GrimGrimoire as downloadable PSN games if they can. I’d take a collection as well.

    • Playlife_2

People can always play this in a emulator (Dolphin) on whatever resolution they want which plays this game perfectly and believe me the sprites don’t need any resize everything looks pretty clean.

  • thaKingRocka

As far as I can tell, we got absolutely no answers there.

    • http://twitter.com/RefueledPants Jordan Slovsaki

Instead of answers to questions it raised new ones…

      • thaKingRocka

Painfully evasive and ambiguous language. It’s incredible how few people these days will not say yes or no.

  • IVDLAMHT

    the wii u is hd
port the game to that console

people seem to forget that nintendo has an hd console now

    • Kirbysuperstar2

They don’t have a HD console *now*, they have one in the pipeline.

      • IVDLAMHT

        so what
        they still have one

        • Guest

          No, they “will” have one.

  • XypherCode

well they did say that a 3DS port of Muramasa was possible. looking forward to that. :D

    • xflame10

id rather have a brand new game a response to dragon’s crown if you will.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brandon.regueiro Brandon Regueiro

I know the gameplay isn’t much different from some of their other games, but I loved the world of muramasa. I’d love more of that game.

  • Aoshi00

I played it on the Wii and loved it to death and bought the OST too, and if an HD port happens I wouldn’t mind getting it again… but for those who have a Wii, probably shouldn’t wait and just get it, it’s 12 bucks.. instead of waiting for a potential port.. I thought it looked plenty beautiful enough even on the Wii.. It’s like Dead Space Extraction or House of the Dead Overkill.. just play it on whichever platform you have, unless you don’t have a Wii, which is really cheap now and worth picking up for so many Nintendo games.. I mean Skyward Sword?

    • midgard229

sept if u hate zelda, then why would u? lol

i have a wii in the house, been wanting to play muramasa, but rather wait for the hd version because, well the standard tv the wii is on is blurry and well, the wii on an hd tv looks even more blurry.

wii being SD is fail honestly, not sure why muramasa wasnt released on ps2….maybe remaster for the vita?

      • Aoshi00

I’m not the biggest fan of playing SD Wii games on my HD TV either, but Muramasa being a 2D game really doesn’t look that bad or blurry at all. compared to say 3D games like Xenoblade or Last Story, both look amazing, but I guess they would look better on a SD TV..  I definitely don’t want to play it on a smaller portable.. I mean people are even asking for Grand Knights on the PSP to be remastered for the PS3..  I think I would miss a lot of details on a Vita screen compared to a 46″ TV..

I could understand those who haven’t played it would want to play it in HD, but the Wii ver really does look great even on an HD TV.. and I’m too big of a vanillaware fan not to get their games on day 1.

  • Xeahnort

I think the announcement of Muramasa alongside Odin Sphere in HD  were too good to be true.

  • Jefri Wiradiputra

I don’t care abouT HD Remaster, I need localization, NOW! :p

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ted-Mahsun/585488899 Ted Mahsun

Localized into what may I ask?

  • http://twitter.com/Three_Leaf_Ivy Triplicity

Guess I can safely unseal and actually play my copy of Muramasa then, eh?

  • RagnaXBL

Yea didn’t see this happening tbh

  • thebanditking

Too bad really I was hoping to see this game in HD. Maybe for Vita at some point.

  • PrinceHeir

man that would be awesome if it were a downloadable game :)
