Odin Sphere/Actraiser PC Platformer In Needs Your Help

By Allen . September 9, 2011 . 3:30pm

Imagine a world of light and shadow, where things are not what they seem. A world where the line between good and evil isn’t gray… it simply doesn’t exist. And when the most unlikely of beings rises to be a hero, everything that everyone believes appears to spin out of control. This is The Light of the Darkness.

The characters are at the heart of The Light of the Darkness. The concept of “good vs. evil”  which is prevalent in so many games of today has been replaced by something far more dubious: perception. The perceptions and motivations of each character are what drive their decisions, not being aligned to one particular side. For example, Christines, Daughter of Supremacy could be considered good, but a decision she full heartedly believes is right is what some would consider evil.  Mendriak, in both appearance and responsibility, looks the part of being evil and just might be. After encountering someone like himself, yet so different he’s forced to ask himself: If Sephius, the protagonist, can be different, why can’t I?

It’s only fitting that if you’re going to create a unique world you need the right engine to do it. Epifanica needed something flexible, something multiplatform. The design team also wanted the game to move and flow in a way to complement the story and for that they required solid physics. How can a developer do this with a small budget? You use Flash wrapped in the Citrus Engine. The Citrus Engine integrates Flash with the physics engine Box2D.  No other flash engines supported Box2D did at the time and it was a bold move. One that may pay off if The Light of the Darkness moves forward.

See, The Light of the Darkness is currently a Kickstarter project. Users have to pre-fund the game for development to continue. Pledging $5 will get you a copy of the PC game at launch while $150 will put you in the game as a statue. Epifanica set a target of $22,000 for initial funding and with three days to go they are under $16,000. The way Kickstarter works is only developers only receive money if they reach their goal.

So, with less than three days to go would you fund The Light of the Darkness?

Eh. Why not. Could be a good game.

But what if I pledge my 5 bucks and they don’t reach the target?!?!? My 5 dollars, who knows what will happen!

    • malek86

The way Kickstarter works, you don’t get charged until the project reaches the target. If it doesn’t, you don’t pay anything.

  • Solomon_Kano

This looks great. I hope they reach their goal.

  • dragoon_slayer12

II wish I had money right now, I would give them $150, in hopes of a handheld version (vita, 3ds, not mobile)…. FUCKING rent, I can’t even give them 5 at the moment, why couldn’t this happen next week….

Do you make seal noises when you get hit?

This is why that Extra Credits Indie Fund is needed.  If we didn’t have stuff like that, we might not get games with a lot of potential like this.

  • DuskShark

Done and done. I hope to see this game completed.

Ugh, I hate Flash Animation. It’s just so lazy. Like putting hinges on paper dolls and moving the individual components around – it’s so blatantly bad. Does a complete disservice to the actual painted graphics here. Devalues so much of what’s going on here.

Still, I support the effort. Just wish the animation weren’t so lazy and off-putting.

You say Actraiser and all I can think of is being a god floating high above going down to purify the land before sending my angel to guide the mortals on the land to build a great empire of peace in my name…

Man I like that Snes game… Wish there was more of that… (Dark Cloud felt similar and Breath of Fire also explored the Sim intermixed with unrelated gameplay connected only via the story elements).

      I miss Quintet =(

  • Advent_Andaryu

I read “Odin Sphere” and initially thought of an HD re-release for it… :(

  • SilentSchemer

Imagine if they pull out a “MML3.” *trollface*

    *Sighs*

  • Lightthrower

Pledged 30$, these guys deserve it!

  • Bunzi

And here I thought Siliconera was above using misleading headlines to get people to read an article.

If it had said Odin Sphere-/like/ PC Platformer, that would of been fine. As is… I am disappoint, Allen.

There’s no doubt almost every household has a computer – at least those located in a technologically-powered area. That being the case, a Computer Franchise is a good business.

  • Red9ro

    Ah the Brazilian game, right?
Personally i don’t think it will be so good but glad to see it’s getting known.

    • http://talesattbokmph.wordpress.com/ Setsuryuu (TBOkmph)

So much ceticism about the national product, this is so brazilian… xP
C’mon, you got to at least admit it sounds original. With more releases of games like this one and things like Ação Magazine we might be about to watch a whole new era of multimidia entertainment in Brazil, albeit I now I migh be too much optimistic in the matter. Afinal, não é que eu esteja dizendo que o jogo realmente parece que vai ser bom, só jogando pra saber! xD

      • Red9ro

No I swear I’m not cetic about it because it’s Brazilian! xD
It just looks kinda incomplete to me. Since it’s national, that’s all the more reason to hope it turns awesome.
Looking forward to Ação Magazine too, but I also think that all the stories are going to be good enough.. from what I saw, not because it’s Brazilian!

        • http://talesattbokmph.wordpress.com/ Setsuryuu (TBOkmph)

Well, this post was really for kickstarter asking money to help the project, so it was probably actually incomplete. xP

Let’s see how both comics and games work out in Brazil from now on (specially if the taxes problem with the games find some solution).

I guess it’s a good moment to be optimistic, so much that I will pretend that you actually meant you think the Ação’s stories will be good enough and not mistyped or forgot to place a “not” before the “good enough” (despite the whole “looking forward too, BUT…” indicating otherwise). I mean, I heard there were even people from the actual Shonen Jump congrating them for trying it, that’s gotta be good. xD

  • TrevHead

It looks nice but the lack of combat means the game isnt for me. I didnt see one clip showing more than 1 enemy on screen
