PlayStation Vita And PSP Know How To Talk To Each Other In Ad-Hoc Mode

PlayStation Vita And PSP Know How To Talk To Each Other In Ad Hoc ModeLet’s say you have Monster Hunter Portable 3rd and a friend has the same game installed on PlayStation Vita. Can you play together? The answer is yes. PlayStation Vita can play downloadable PSP games and communicate with PSP for ad-hoc play.

While it isn’t as prevalent in the West, ad-hoc games are quite popular in Japan especially with respect to the multiplayer hunting genre. And if you like the Vita’s OLED screen you can play a digital copy of God Eater Burst on it and be the envy of your Aragami hunting group. Also a plus for Lord of Apocalypse, which Square Enix announced for PSP and PlayStation Vita.

good to know, now i can make fun of my friends while i have the power of double analogs!

  • Go2hell66

    Yes i’ll make everyone jelly!

Since both device can connect to PSN, I assume that infrastructure games like Phantasy Star Portable 2 will also work.

Hopefully with the Vita’s powerful hardware some of the slowdown issues with some PSP games can be corrected. To some degree cfw users can by forcing the PSP to use higher cpu speed.

Aaaahhhhhh I just experienced a burst of ureshiiii-ness. Now Monster and Aragami hunting will become even sexier.

Great, then we will have many game in common

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity where?

Still kinda sucks…unless players who own and play UMD games can somehow obtain a code to download digital copies of the same games on the Vita for free, along with a save transfer to the Vita.

  • Buckfitches

They should release an update where you can transfer the data from your physical UMD’s on your PSP to your brand new Vita. Just connect the two, insert the UMD, and select “copy to Vita”.
This would solve the entire backwards compatibility issue, wouldn’t it?

That would easily add to the ways to pirate stuff

    • KotaroInugami

Pop in UMD, copy to Vita, give game to friend, copy to vita, give game to friend, etc. etc.

      • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Exactly. Just as well call it the “free games giveaway”

      • doomspeller10

        Problem, Sony?

    • d19xx

Or offer an exchange program. Such as bring your UMD, manual and case to shops like Gamestop and they’ll give you a dl code for that same game.

Many games don’t have a PSN version though.

My suggestion is to do what Nintendo did and make a UMD player for PS3/PS4.  Sure it won’t be handheld but gamers can enjoy their UMDs again.

        • KotaroInugami

I like that idea. Not much else they can do. Could you imagine if there was an external UMD player for the Vita itself? It would kinda be so counterproductive. All in all I never liked the concept of digital games… Being stuck with a game forever…

    • doomspeller10

That would take forever with Ad-hoc, perhaps a decent cable solution could fix that. Still a nice idea, but the piracy implications are huge.

So I assume that means Vita is compatible with all PSP download titles, regardless of the region? (Not that it was unexpected.)

    • doomspeller10

Yeah. Sometimes what we take for granted is not that obvious to video game companies. Just look at the 3DS region lock (yeah, this example is kinda trite now, but you get the idea).

  • AzureNova

Wow, Vita keeps getting better and better.

    • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

      You don’t say~

  • Solomon_Kano

Nice. Now if only if publishers would get to putting more of their titles on PSN…

    *looks at Square Enix*
*looks at Birth by Sleep UMD*
    *looks at Square Enix*
    *looks at Crisis Core UMD*

    So…yea.

T_T My only regret is that I have a tendency to buy UMDs rather than download the game (I can’t help it! The pretty extras! *_*) even for games that have a PSN download. God spammit. I wonder if there’s a way to get a digital copy without re-buying it.

So PS Vita has backward compatibility with PSP game titles? If yes, maybe I can export my psp game to vita? it’ll be awesome

  • http://twitter.com/thelegalstep Jason Smith

Anything made by Square that isn’t made by Enix, or Eidos really isn’t that interesting to me. Square I’m calling you out for sucking!
