Black Rock Shooter Fans, We Need Your Help To Bring The Premium Box Out Of Japan

By Spencer . September 26, 2011 . 5:30pm

Black Rock Shooter: The Game will be localized and released for PSP overseas care of NIS America. The fate of the premium box set is up in the air, though. We spoke with Haru Akenaga, president of NIS America, who told Siliconera they are considering to bring the limited edition overseas.

Black Rock Shooter Fans, We Need Your Help To Bring The Premium Box Out Of Japan

Japan’s premium box set includes a White Rock Shooter figure, art book, and soundtrack CD. If NIS America releases the box set, the opening theme song by One OK Rock will not be included in the international version and it will not include a UMD of the game. The figure will be the same.

We’re running a one question survey to see if readers here and Black Rock Shooter fans everywhere are interested in getting the White Premium Box in North America. The survey closes on October 2nd and we’ll pass the data directly to NIS America. Vote below!

Update: We spoke with NIS America and there is one more change for the box set. It will not include a UMD version of the game. The North American version will include the White Rock Shooter figma, art book, and soundtrack CD minus the song from One OK Rock.

    yes please

  • Loran Cehack

If the game came with White Rock Shooter figma I would definitely buy this since I’ve already started collecting some of GOOD Smile Company’s B★RS figurines/figma!

  • antonio bruno

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!  pleaseee

  • http://www.jb2x.com/wordpress/ JB2X

P.S.: NISA, once you tell me that pre-orders for the game are open, I WILL PUT DOWN THE PRE-ORDER IMMEDIATELY UPON ANNOUNCEMENT!  AT YOUR STORE!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25802187 Josh Welshans

According to the Prinny Bomb newsletter NISA just sent out, if this is brought over, the UMD won’t be included. Does that mean this will be distributed digitally only and we’ll get a code to download it or does it mean we’ll have to buy the game separately?

  • http://www.lunarshards.com/ Frei Casull

It had better be the freaking figma! They’re better not pull what they did with Disgaea 4 and change out the nendoroid :O

    • wakaki2d

The Nendoroid version was on ebay for weeks for 20$ after the JP release. I got mine there. So I ended up getting the good one and the cheap looking figure they gave us in the boxset. The 1 that came in the U.S boxset was only about 4$ in JP.

  • http://twitter.com/HikaruKazushime Hikaru Kazushime

I clicked “yes” as I would happily buy the premium box. I just hope that NISA is able to bring the exact premium box over and not pull what they did with Disgaea 4 and take the Nendo out and replace it with some average gashapon quality figure. It should be easier anyways, since Good Smile Company (the makers of the FIGMA and NENDOROID lines and also one of the biggest sponsors of Black Rock Shooter) is beginning to become established here in the US with their new warehouse in Los Angeles. Besides, its not like people here don’t know what a FIGMA is, every single convention we have sells them and I know HUNDREDS of people who love and collect them. Bringing over that premium box would be a great business move. We need more things like this in the US.

    • http://backloggery.com/TJF588 T.J. Fuller, Jr.

For what it’s worth, I like the design of what we got over the SD/chibi Nendoroid. Any materials issues aside, the paintjob looked fine (or fine enough) on what I received for me to be satisfied.

  • hugo rousseau

Wut? Why are they removing the opening from One Ok Rock for the international version?

    • wakaki2d

Cos they would have to pay crazy amounts of $ bills to be allowed to sell it in the U.S due to licensing just like every other problem NISA has ever had with music in their games… They change the songs in a good bit of their published games, to save the customers money. They announced this mins after this article was posted.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1381023823 Halley Shaver

Yes, if its the same Figma from the Good Smile Company that Japan was able to buy. I would be less inclined to buy the premium box if they changed the figma to something similar. I am referring to the Disgaea 4 Premium Box which was going to include Disgaea Nendoroid, at some point in time, this changed and the US received something different.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1661801232 Aaron Salais

NISA Prinny Bomb says the UMD wont come in the figure box set, does this mean the game literally won’t be in the box with all that other stuff (like they did if you pre-ordered pokemon platinum and got the giratina figure), or am I gonna have to buy the actual game separate from this?

    • http://twitter.com/bta_man BTA

Yeah, I’m wondering this too. If that’s true, I guess that solves my “problem” – I’ll just buy the retail release of the game and leave it at that.

  • Kuraio

NISA Prinny Bomb newsletter says the UMD won’t be included in the figma boxset? Please make it available on UMD. I’m not interested in a digital copy :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000943760293 Princess Rena

hell no. i’m not going to buy this and spend the same price as i would spend for the japanese version – just to get ripped off. i am sick of NISA only putting “select” tracks onto soundtracks and ACTING like it’s a full soundtrack, as well as basically giving us a slightly-bigger-than-usual game manual and calling it an “artbook”. GIVE US THE LEGIT JAPANESE VERSION SOUNDTRACK AND ARTBOOK at a USA price (which is always half of japan’s price) AND THEN MAYBE WE’LL CONSIDER IT. thanks for listening.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sobanoodles Lauren Iannella

I agree… this is so unfair!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wetzel/100000344655439 Nicholas Wetzel

(nothing to do with this subject) Damn your so cute.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wetzel/100000344655439 Nicholas Wetzel

      For sure

    • http://twitter.com/bta_man BTA

From what I’ve heard, the Japanese soundtrack *also* lacked that track (which was released as its own CD single), though. If that’s true, I have no idea why they chose to mention it here. I just got my copy today and haven’t opened it to personally check, though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000943760293 Princess Rena

i’m not talking about the opening song. i’m talking about the fact that NISA gives us half or less of the japanese soundtracks. look at every ar tonelico, persona, and atelier release. NONE of them are full soundtracks. don’t be fooled into thinking they are.

        • http://backloggery.com/TJF588 T.J. Fuller, Jr.

The Persona 1 release had two discs’ worth of songs. If that’s not a complete soundtrack, I’d fear to see what was left out.

Heck, it’s because Persona 2′s music disc was only a selection that I backed down from Atlus on that release. If it goes on sale, then maybe. Then again, there’s also the matter of UMDs being useless for the impending Vita.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wetzel/100000344655439 Nicholas Wetzel

    GIVE ME ONE, DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Ellipsai_Magnet Magnetic Ana

I seriously want this, but PLEEEEASE with the UMD, I don’t care about the soundtrack, but I want the UMD, Artbook and Figure, I don’t care if it costs $120 or even $150, my internet won’t download games well, and I’d need to buy a whole new mem stickkkk (if it were a download code, if not a download code, why have a preorder set with no game?)

  • William Carpenter

Man, now that I’m in a University and I have to manage what I play and buy, I just can’t justify buying these big box sets. The only reason why this sort of thing has appeal is the fact that it’s limited to pre-orders and first runs, so everyone feels compelled to buy it before they run out of stock. But… then what? You’ve got a useless statue taking up space.

I dunno, now that I gotta limit what I buy, I think I’m overall much happier. I don’t need this stuff. Just give me the game, and if it’s a series I know I love then maybe I’ll consider the limited edition bundles or whatever.

    • Knicks Dawal

for people who like’s collecting figures this is good though i admit for those who don’t like anime figures this is kinda pointless, i’m gonna get it though one more figma for me :)

  • Kai2591

I’m very surprised some people actually see this as a bad thing….how can it be bad? This can only be a good thing! And a good sign of more good things to come~

    I for one, voted YES.

Glad I resisted the temptation of buying the Japanese version. Somehow I had a feeling that NISA would consider this…

Thanks NISA! I will always buy your premium editions!

PS: As long as you include the Japanese voices, they’re an instant buy for me. Otherwise, I won’t buy them at all. Its just not the same with English voices..

  • nyoron

Wait, what the hell about the UMD thing? Standard edition gets UMD and Premium version does not? Or is this game not coming on UMD at all? This new info probably changes my response to the survey… I haven’t bought a digital only PSP game yet and if I do it’s going to be as cheaply as possible.

    • http://twitter.com/bta_man BTA

Looks like no UMD version, and the Premium Box will come with a voucher for the PSN version.

  • http://backloggery.com/TJF588 T.J. Fuller, Jr.

Wait, a swag-laiden box set with a download game?

    S.

    O.

    L.

    D.

With Vita on the horizon and no promise of a UMD -> D/L program, these nice, physical editions (hello, XSEED!) are killing me on the thought of the impending upgrade. To have no choice but to get it digitally is actually a relief! While I would have liked to picked up the Premium Box eventually, this optimization may just spur me to preordering outright!

  • Benedict Tough

No UMD, no buy. I’d like to play this, and I won’t be able to given i’m not American.
It’s not worth ~$120 just for a figure.

    • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

I’m not American as well, but I was able to buy and perfectly well play War of Agarest from the US PSN store and play it on my European PS3. What makes you think you won’t be able to play it since you’re not from the US?

      • wakaki2d

For 1 thing, PSP’s are almost impossible to have more than 1 account on. So if he’s from EU than he will have to ONLY use his US account to be able to download the game off US PSN. Same reason I’m not getting rid of my PSP & UMD’s. Since I have so many JP UMD’s and my PSP is only connected to my US account I’ll never be able to get the JP games off the JP PSN. Unless I erase everything on my PSP just to RE-BUY all the JP games for an inflated price.

        • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

Errm… I still don’t see the problem. You CAN have multiple accounts but you can only have one activated at a time. To play and download US games, you would have to delete your existing account, create an US account and play from that one. Your EU account won’t be deleted permanently, if you delete the US account again and want to login to your EU account, you just choose the option to sign in with an existing account when setting up a new one. It’s a little bit of work, but it’s not like you CAN’T play US games on an EU PSP. Downloaded content won’t be deleted, you just can’t access as unless you sign in with the account you downloaded it with. (And to make extra sure it’s not deleted or anything you can always use two different memory cards for different region content…) There is no NEED to erase anything from your PSP besides the account, but of course, you would have to re-buy the games, as you bought UMD copies and not digital copies of the games.

  • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

I’d actually prefer a non-UMD version, as I own no PSP and am not planning to get one. I’d rather like to play what little PSP games I’m interested in on the Vita, as soon as it’s out.

Of course I’d also prefer an UMD version + a digital copy code, but I can see how that could lead to issues.

If I buy the premium box or not wholly depends on the price, NISA’s store isn’t exactly the best when it comes to international shipping, since shipping fees are… high. So, $120 + $30 for shipping and around another $20 for customs… ah well, maybe I should just have it sent to my aunt in the US and wait until she visits next time… *rambles*

  • Michael Kovacs

    YES!!!

  • wakaki2d

I never plan on getting rid of my PSP, I don’t get why people are happy about this. Is everyone who owns a PSP just gonna throw away all their UMDs for the Vita? Maybe you should hand them all over to all of us, the people who will own both. Vita won’t have all the great games that were UMD only, and I have over 20 JPN UMD’s that I won’t be able to get off PSN, without over paying for JP PSN card. This is a let down, IMO.

    • SerendipityX

This. Also, no UMD makes me sad and sort of annoyed. I want to buy this but I live
in the middle of nowhere with terrible internet connections!! Dial-up is all that’s available. >.> Do they not even take people like me into consideration with DD-only
games? And I’m not just talkin’ about NIS America here…

  • Nerroth

While I would prefer a UMD release to help keep a handle on the free space on my PSP’s memory stick, I’ll get by if it is to be PSN only.

(I think of when Fate/Unlimited Codes came out in the West; sure, it was PSN only, but it was still better than not getting the game at all.)

  • Learii

the permuim box set will not include the game UMD?

  • http://www.facebook.com/anime.noticias.perumanga Hagaren FiftyNine

WE WANT THE PREMIUM BOX NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO CARES IF THERES NO UMD?! I WILL BUY IT ANYWAY!!!

  • Anthony Haller

Would much Much MUCH more prefer it with the UMD and would pay extra to get it!!!

HAHA i already have Black Rock shooter White Premium Box!!!
I got it from a friend in  Japan, already passed the game. it was awesome,
it has 6 stages: san francisco, new york, moscow, fuji yukai ,tokyo ,moon
the home screen changes from the metallic background to the clear blue sky after you pass the game, has a gallery with: art viewer, sound player, and movie viewer.
you have to unlock them doing missions,
i totally prefer it in Japanese the voices sound real, not fake like english voice overs,
the opening with One ok Rock and its a UMD. Nothing can beat Japanese orijinal Products!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000542826647 Jonathan Ramos

ps i got it for free

  • MCoelho

Sorry but i support the no UMD idea, when i buy Vita i will want to have my PSP games there.

    Voted yes!

  • William Harvey

    Not supporting this.

As a member of the large figure community, I feel like I am being ripped off for my dedication. I preordered the box set knowing how the Japanese limited figure market works- you miss your chance, you miss the figure forever. There was no sign this would ever come to America. The people who are voting yes, most of you are doing so because you had no idea the figure existed until now.

“But, this is great!!!111!!! Y u no want to bring to America?”

Greatly diminished value- figures like these are investments and easily worth much more later. Although I buy figures for their plastic and not monetary value, it’s still annoying that the amount of American figures is going to ruin the value.

I worked hard to earn the money for this figure. It only cost me about 120 dollars(which is a really fair price compared to most Japanese box sets), but as a student, I got a job to help pay for it. If you guys have the money, why not just import the Japanese version? It’s still in stock in multiple stores and won’t devalue other copies.

People may say that I’m being selfish, but in reality, it’s the selfishness of others who won’t just import the figure. How does bringing it to America make the set any better?

    • Tristan H

Unfortunately not everyone has means to import. Why would people buy the JPN version of the game for the figure? Ultimately, any import is a risk due to the uncertainty of it coming or not coming out at other times, it is simply a risk that one takes.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000542826647 Jonathan Ramos

the figma is going to lose more than 60% of its value if it leaves Japan.

        • ShugoTakahashi

          Who cares?

    • Colby Edwards

Not all of us can shell out $120 for a $30 figure.

“How does bringing it to America make the set any better?”
You mean besides coming with a game in a language we understand, most likely being significantly cheaper (especially when you take into account that you’d be buying the game TWICE), and showing publishers there’s a market in the US for this sort of thing, potentially opening the door for more localized games to come with their exclusive figures in the future?

And really, as a figure collector, you should be used to reissues and value drops. It happens ALL THE TIME. Compared to figures that go for 20,000+ yen getting restocked at ~7,000, this is small time.

    • ShugoTakahashi

I imported the Japanese set as well.

Does it really matter if people didn’t know the figurine existed until now? How does that in any way invalidate their desire? Collecting Japanese figurines isn’t some kind of super-secret club that only some sort of elite people are allowed to join. You sound like a hipster:

“Pfft, I was into this BEFORE it was cool and accessible! You stupid, uninformed people are just going to ruin its coolness!!!”

Will it diminish the value of the figurine in the American market? Certainly. But you have to realize that we’re not the only ones who want that figurine; we simply had the means and didn’t mind receiving a copy of the game in Japanese. I can’t read Japanese; I’m completing the game using guides. Maybe you can, but most Americans can’t. Why would they pay so much for something they can’t even understand?

Why I did it? I’m a huge BRS fan and, like you, I thought the figurine would never make it stateside. But I’m not getting frustrated that my investment will be ruined – in fact, I’m really happy about this news. I have a friend who loves this kind of thing almost as much as I do, but she can’t afford to keep the hobby up due to all the import costs. She has a meager little collection and she’s always beaming every time she can put the money out for a single, cheap figma in-between her bill payments. She’d be so happy that something like this is going to be affordable, and for it to be WRS, too…a BEAUTIFUL figma. I already know she’s very envious of mine!

Basically, you ARE being selfish. Only people like us with money to blow and dedication to this crazy hobby can ever afford this kind of stuff, but we’re not the only ones who like it – we’re just the only ones who can accommodate it. Give someone else a chance for once. Like I said, collecting this stuff isn’t a super secret club; you should be welcoming newcomers to the hobby instead of whining about the money you spent. If you didn’t think WRS would be worth $120, then you shouldn’t have paid that much for her. I thought she’d be worth it, and I believe I got my money’s worth. Not to mention that anything BRS-related doing well and gaining attention in the US can only be a good thing. I’d like this stuff to be cheaper and more accessible too!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/GuiltyRaioh ShinkaRaioh

I can’t be sure, because I read a lot of stuff on the internet, but this here is definitely one of the higher leveled stupid comments~
So all in all you won’t support this because you thought you would be a cool dude having bought a JPN Figure set and don’t want to ruin your state of “awesomeness”? Damn man, that’s really really sad…I mean why are you ripped off now? You have the figure, be happy, and let the other people who can’t afford importing all the time get their chance to buy this too, diminished value..lol good thing I don’t call myself a part of the figure community then, because I buy figures for fun and pleasure and not because I can brag about them…

And trying to shove the selfishness onto others? That’s the best part of your comment! Obviously I am selfish, that’s human nature, I want the figure and the game for my pleasure and just for the heck of it also want to understand the game without buying it two times, but my selfishness has yet to hurt anyone, while your selfishness is extreme, you only care for yourself, thinking you are a higher being, and ignoring the pleads of other people here, just for your information, you are not alone in this world~

    • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

You’re calling others selfish for wanting to choose something that is pragmatic for them? And your sole reasoning is that because it’d make your figures less valuable?

Okay, I’m not a hardcore collector, but if this is what being a hardcore collector means, I don’t ever want to be one. (Although your logic is too skewed to be a decent human being.) You got the figure, and you’re satisfied; good for you. But to call others selfish for wanting the same thing at a more affordable price…? Gee, between you and that one bugger I can’t remove from my Disqus follower list, I honestly cannot decide who’s the bigger bigot here.

More than anything, though, I’m most surprised by your sense of judgement to actually say it out loud in public; on a website dedicated to spreading Japanese gaming culture in the West, no less.

    • http://twitter.com/iMONSTERGAGA The Fame Mons†er

Many of us knew about the figma to begin with because it has been advertised in almost every trailer after WRS was an announced character. So what if people recently discovered the figure and produced a want for it! That is clearly normal…You’re comment clearly makes no sense and even with a job, I won’t buy a game that I can’t understand just for a figma…No matter how much I like the game. It’s hilarious how you call people selfish for wanting the game along with the figma at an affordable price. What about the younger market who has no choice but to wait for an affordable version? Screw the value of your figures! I imported about 8 figmas last month because I liked them…Not because of their value…Seriously, get a grip because you and your comment are 100% asinine

    • http://twitter.com/bta_man BTA

I don’t necessarily agree with all of this, but as someone who collects figures and imported the box, I do partially agree. The exchange rate is horrible and the box cost a lot to begin with, and so for it to pop up now feels like a waste of money.

Furthermore, there is a feeling of “you miss your chance, you miss the figure forever” within the community, and for a good reason: re-releases are pretty rare, and things are often sold out before their pre-order period even ends. So the fact that this is coming to the US now feels even worse.

That being said, I’m happy that other people will be able to get their hands on the figma! I just hope there’ll be enough for everyone who actually wants the box.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chuang-Hung-Ko/100001729547448 Chuang Hung-Ko

Just answer this question: [Do you buy figures to sell later or for yourself?]

If you buy them to sell later, then we understand your frustration; but if you’re a collector who buys because you love the series, then you should be happy instead that you get the same thing and cost less.

Getting your WRS imported does NOT make it special, you only THINK it is.
I do buy figures from Japan that are more than 200 USD each, but I get them because I want them, not for how much they’re worth in currency.
Certainly it feels like an accomplishment when you worked your hours to get the money to pay for the thing and then feel betrayed to find out later that it will be made available for less. But that all YOUR own problem.
A game worth 70 bucks at first, then drops to 20 like 3 months later, is the person who bought it 3 months ago any better than whoever buys it at 20? Of course not.

You’re willing to pay for it, then don’t complain; if you complain, then you’re not a collector but an investor who will sell it later on Ebay for LOT higher price when it will be discontinued.

    • pokeman_ash

You know it could be a good thing. They could come out with an Exclusive American exclusive WRS or BRS figurine. something different than the Japanese version.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1388618872 Alex Whitaker

It won’t have a UMD version with the box? What so we are buying the box for the game without the game? :/

That makes it much harder for me to justify the purchase to myself, but I still will try get it.

There will be a standard UMD version though right? I really don’t like having games on my PSP, and I don’t have the space for it.

    • MidnightRain

Actually, the premium box would include a PSN Voucher, so that you could download the game.  At the moment, NISA only plans to release the game on the PSN.

      • Ryos

I wish I’d known that prior to voting because now I can’t say I have much interest in the set at all. It’s bait and switch! I think the only way I’d pick this up now is if I have money burning a hole in my pocket.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1388618872 Alex Whitaker

        *sigh*

I really can’t stand getting games via the PSN, I suppose I won’t be getting it anymore, I can’t justify the purchase of it if it doesn’t have the UMD.

But I understand that at the moment because of the Vita coming out soon that most would prefer a download code.
And NISA can’t make everyone happy.
Oh well, at least everyone else can be happy when they get theirs ^_^

  • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

I am going to get this box then get the digital/physical copy of the game and that would make my day.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Rickle/1510932970 James Rickle

    double post lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Rickle/1510932970 James Rickle

Though the lack of a physical UMD got me down a tad, I would still
purchase this.  It is still an amazing collectors set, and we never get
anything in the states of this quality.  Figures usually change form
Japanese sets to American ones, and I for one would love to have this.  I
purchased the store release of Marvel VS Capsom 2 on PSN just because
it was nice to have a physical box with artwork to display in my
collection, and I feel the same about this.  Hope you being this here
NISA!  Even if you don’t I will continue to support your work.  :)

  • http://twitter.com/Bill_A_Nator Bill Glendening

I don’t care about the lack of a UMD since I plan on selling my PSP and get the PSV. And since you can’t play UMDs on the PSV, digital is perfect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MasterK666 Kevin Wuhrmann

i want the game here in EU :) please as UMD, DLC sucks xD
