Nier News Incoming?

By Spencer . September 29, 2011 . 9:00am

Nier News Incoming? We thought Yosuke Saito, producer of Nier, moved on to other projects. After all, he is the producer of the online Wii RPG Dragon Quest X: Waking of the Five Tribes.

"Will there be an amazing announcement on Friday? Perhaps," Saito tweeted because he didn’t get a reaction to his first tweet about how we couldn’t wait until Friday.

Both tweets have the #nier hashtag and since we think Saito wouldn’t purposely trick Nier fans into reading Dragon Quest X news we’re going to guess it’s tied to Square Enix’s action RPG. While cavia (the developer) folded into AQ Interactive, Square Enix owns the intellectual property and could release work with another studio on a sequel or spin-off.

    Fingers crossed for a new Nier game. As long as it’s as good as the original…oh man. We so excited ; ~ ;

  • Gaara D.Dragon

    MUST SAVE YONAH.

  • Brandonmkii

If Cavia staff aren’t working on it, i’m not sure how it could turn out. But I really hope it’s awesome.

  • http://arlus.exelements.net/forum/ KID_CHAINSAW

No Yoko Taro, then I don’t care. Yosuke Saito had little to do with what made Nier so amazing

  • http://www.facebook.com/Arurie Alexandra Cordes

If only the same director would be working on whatever it turns out to be.
I’m not going to complain as long as it’s just as amazing as Nier… or at least close… which is unlikely.
But at least we still have Nier.

  • Ladius

Give me Yoko Taro and the Monaca sound team and take my money, no questions asked :P

  • http://twitter.com/seph_luis_br Luis Camargo

I really hope that is a sequel. A new story, much improved gameplay and so on.

And hopefully a whole new OST from the Monaca Team. Nier OST is amazing.

    • Syltique

I’m sure it would be the same people.  They’re on their 3rd Nier CD being sold. They know that everyone loves it.

    • BGMcDF

I’m pretty sure that in the last year, the gaming community has elevated Nier’s score to a step under It Was His Sled.

We know it’s good. Square does as well, else they wouldn’t release so many audio products regarding it in such a short time. That they released so many CDs (4, counting the audio drama) proves they hold the project dear.

  • Barrit

I’m in the same boat as everyone else. Pretty excited, but holding back a little as it would have quite the expectations to meet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexis-Smith/100002359005831 Alexis Smith

I’m really hopping for a good Nier sequel, but Square Enix hasn’t been very good, lately…

  • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

    inb4 Nier the social game

  • Syltique

This would truly be amazing news.  I’m so glad that SQEX got the message that fans loved Nier.

  • theoriginaled

Not really sure anyone but cavia could pull this off. Its that pure mix of brilliance and torture that makes Nier what it is.

Hell who am I kidding if the same team is back composing the soundtrack I could care less. The followup could just be a string of music tracks with no gameplay and Id still buy it. The soundtrack to Nier was THAT good.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

Man, I still need to get Nier, but with Dark Souls, AC:Revelations, and Skyrim coming out soon… I don’t have the time to be able to play it.

  • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Nier was a pretty good game, but again, it means little until Square-Enix retcons 3rd Birthday and makes a proper game starring Aya Brea. I mean that both for mere publishing, as I feel Square-Enix doesn’t deserve money until they’re willing to show they actually care about their IPs by fixing that mistake, and if Square-Enix directly makes it, since they need to show they can respect the source material when making spinoffs and sequels set in the same fictional world. Just about every case thus far where they make a spinoff or sequel, especially FFX-2 and 3rd Birthday, has been rife with disrespect toward the source material by forcing ideas for new IPs onto old ones where they don’t belong as a means of boosting sales by name recognition.

Once Square-Enix is willing to undo past mistakes and show due respect for their own history by treating it right, that’s when I think getting hopeful for things like a new Nier game is safe.

    • Syltique

There is nothing at all wrong with The 3rd Birthday.  To bring it up in a Nier article as arrogantly as you have, while ironically demanding “respect,” is pretty much blatant trolling.

      • Pekola

I think the person is just stating their opinion, not “trolling”. I mean, it’s not the kind of opinion we like to hear, but it’s theirs.

Regardless of that, I really doubt Square will do any of that. Salarta, you should probably wait until some more games are released to try and throw any stones at Square.

If we see Nier turning into Final Fantasy: Grimoire edition. Then feel free to bash Square however you want. Lol.

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I understand where you’re coming from, but in my personal experience, I waited 8 years for Square-Enix to show respect for their old IPs and all I’ve seen is greed-based rehashing and an unwillingness to truly fix any mistakes they make, instead either pretending they don’t exist (FFX-2) or hoping adding side material to “write away” the mistakes will make those mistakes acceptable while remaining canon. The only exceptions, FF13 (through FF13-2) and FF14, are only happening because they’re so high-profile that Square-Enix is practically required to fix them, and they pale in comparison to what Square-Enix did to FFX with FFX-2 or Aya Brea with 3rd Birthday.

I honestly don’t have much faith in Square-Enix to do anything right anymore. I’d like for them to prove me wrong, but after 8 years I know it’s never going to happen, and if it does, it’s a rare fluke. I want to believe in them and give them my money, I really do, but they have to treat their IPs with due respect first.

It might not seem linked to the subject of Nier, but it is. Nier, or any IP they own and control directly for that matter, runs the risk of being treated poorly in spinoffs and sequels. Nier isn’t a high-profile game like FF13 or FF14, so what insurance do we have that Square-Enix will try to treat the series right? All we have to go on is games like FFX-2 or 3rd Birthday, and with that kind of track record, there’s more evidence to suggest the worst than the best out of the company.

          • Bakuryukun

            but….3rd Birthday was good.

            And X-2′s gameplay was good.

Granted I agree that SE’s best days are behind it…but personally, I think they still make good games.

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Depends on what you’re judging by. 3rd Birthday treated the source material horribly, especially characterization and presentation of Aya Brea. The gameplay may be good, the music is as typical good, and of course the basic quality of the graphics (not its content) is amazing, but everything else isn’t just horrible, it’s offensive toward the source material.

If 3rd Birthday was a brand new IP with brand new characters in a new fictional world, I’d have been fine with it. But they chose to ruin Aya Brea by turning her into something she never was and wasn’t meant to be, and all the characters pulled in from the Parasite Eve series got dragged right down with her, Maeda being the strongest example outside Aya herself.

          • Bakuryukun

Yeah but there’s a reason Aya is characterized differently that ties into the plot.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I’m demanding respect by Square-Enix toward already existing IPs that they own, particularly ones they made before the merger. Whether or not you hold respect for me personally is your own business.

There are several things wrong with 3rd Birthday, as well as several things wrong with almost all spinoffs and sequels they’ve made to games that were made by the Squaresoft half before the merger. I could point them out, but it would be lengthy, and frankly, I don’t think you would want to hear them anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=512740433 Zubi Khan

Nier was a sleeper hit for me, picked it up for $10 and couldn’t drop it. only real issue I had with it was the dated graphics and mechanics (fetch quest, after fetch quest.. then again i went for the plat trophy). the music was incredible and the story/characters were surprisingly original. I’m not sure how a sequel would work, since the original pretty much ended things nicely, but never the less I AM EXCITE

    • Twisvel

It doesn’t have to be a sequel, it could be a prequel. They released a book called Grimoire NieR that explains many things about the story of NIER and the timeline.

I think I recall them saying that they were interested in making a game about when WCS appeared, the time in between then and Project Gestalt, to the time NieR starts. I believe Nier is also connected to the Drakengard series. (Also dev. by Cavia)

But yes, NIER is awesome in a masochistic kind of way.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=512740433 Zubi Khan

i saw the translations for that book i think, it would be awesome if they did that for sure..

    • Pekola

You know…I’ve been wondering. Does the game really have dated graphics? I thought they looked really good. Maybe I’m just blind or didn’t pay enough attention to detail.

Or maybe I was too focused on the bloom and textures of it all.

      • GamerKT

Nope. If you like it, you’ll be fine.

  • landlock

I’m gonna guess a new Nier game for the PSV.

    • Syltique

      I’m expecting Vita as well.

  • BGMcDF

I loved Nier. Loved it as much as a man can love a game… but I don’t want another. It ended conclusively and was a gem. I’m not as confident lightning can and will strike twice on this one…

    SPOILARS AHEAD

Of course, if one scans Grimoire Nier, they present some routes to take (Ending E, the alien invasion thing, etc).

Again, paid full price for and loved Nier dearly, but it won’t be the same. Some of the more endearing characters don’t survive one or any endings.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=512740433 Zubi Khan

they could always make a game set in a different universe but have the same uhh style? (like final fantasy)

      • BGMcDF

They may as well retitle it by that token. It wouldn’t be Nier, unless you have him lead it again, and frankly he was never the most interesting character in his title. Kaine and Weiss definitely stole the show, so to speak.

        • Mr_SP

But it could be related to Nier in the same was Drakengard was. That is “Oh, you liked that game? This is similar!”. Admittedly, Drakengard could be a bit of a problem at times, and Drakengard and Nier weren’t THAT related, but it’s certainly not Dragon Quest news.

And, frankly, it’s very unlikely Nier would appear again himself. Maybe something about Weiss or Kaine, but Nier’s story came to an end when he saved his daughter and Kaine. And don’t forget about Emil, even if Ending D was super depressing if you consider the events of Ending B, B is still canon. (as far as canon goes for such a thing)

    • Syltique

Easy on the spoilers.  Anyway, they have already managed to have lightning strike twice since they also made the ultra dark/twisted Drakengard.  Cry-On also looked like it was going to be a hit.  I’m optimistic.

      • BGMcDF

Drakengard was a colossal nightmare to actually play, Nier at least functioned. The latter extrapolated a narrative from the former, but it’s not a sequel so much as spiritual successor. It’s like saying FFX/X-2 are prequels to the FFVII series simply because of Shinra. It’s too diluted to really just call it a sequel, especially when Drakengard has a proper one.

I liked the game for constantly raising the bar in terms of pure, condensed What The Christ, but I can’t exactly laud it with the laurels I do Nier. Objectively, it wasn’t that stellar.

As for going easy on the spoilers, I put a warning. Reading ahead is the fault of the reader, as is ruining what may come for them.

    • Pekola

They could also make something in the NieR universe, and setting. And it doesn’t necessarily have to do with what the first game was about. It depends on what they want to do with it.

If they wish to continue on with NieR’s story, then it’ll be a steep climb, that’s for sure.

      • BGMcDF

Agreed, they ended the title pretty damn conclusively. If they want to undo a lot of that so we can go on more adventures, there’s no way it won’t come across as contrived.

        Once again, SPOILERS!

But who would continue the setting? Nobody else knows the dire situation of the world is in (unless we skip to another continent?) and don’t really have enough time or information to find out. A lot of it died with the twins and grimoires, though I suppose a few extra tomes may exist from the initial batch (we only encounter three).

Emil, and either Kaine or Nier are the only surviving character, and neither on their own has too much a reason to save everyone else. None of them seem concerned with the world by then, and more on intimate, more selfish concerns.

It’d be difficult, so consider me skeptical, but only because I love the game so. I cop to the fact that I’ll be getting the game on day one should it come out, I just don’t feel there’s a need for it. The game ended and doesn’t need a sequel. Yeah, it was a bitter-to-bittersweet ending depending on C or D, but that’s what the game warranted.

  • http://twitter.com/willofsilver Silver Lion

Awesome, i hope to see more Nier because Nier is just amazing, especially the soundtrack

  • vrakanox

Time to celebrate. I’m so excited for tomorrow!!!!!

  • neo_firenze

All I’ll say is that Nier was my favorite game of 2010.  Will be interested in seeing what this news is.

  • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

Oh god so finally the sequel about fighting aliens where replicants and gestalts finally learn to get along will happen!?

Or the prequel about the defeat of red eyes?

’cause either way I’m all for it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1595144264 Dennis Chen

      Prequel? Wouldn’t that be Drakengard?

      • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

It was in Grimoire NieR that when the WCS appeared, a monster with red eyes comanded the WCS victims, and the humans created a squad full of teenagers, immune to the WCS, to battle him. It said that they battle him a lot of times and he was defeated on Jerusalem, IIRC anyway.

  • AzureNova

I still need to beat the first Nier sitting on shelf lol -_-

    • vrakanox

Yeah you need to get on that. I would just like put all my other games on hold for awhile.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

I would actually LOVE to see a second Nier game. I picked it up recently from Amazon when they were having a PS3 game sale (likely to unload extra stock), so I nabbed it for $15. TOTALLY WORTH IT. Heck, a quick glance at Metacritic or Gamefly USER reviews shows that, pretty much, everyone who played it LOVES it. There’s also a bunch of people on hardcore gaming 101′s forums right now listing their favorite game music of all time, and Nier is showing up on a good chunk of those lists. I wouldn’t be surprised if copies of Nier were relatively hard to find used, since people are holding onto it. I honestly believe that this, like Deadly Premonition, was just a misunderstood, very special, very ambitious title – gaming journalists barely must’ve looked at it.

Have no idea who’d make another one though, but I kinda don’t care. Cavia was like a mad genius, and this was clearly their “we’re going out of business” game. It’s such a shotgun approach to making a game – they fit in homages to every type of game they ever wanted to make, it seems. Elements of open world games, action-RPGs, bullet hell shooters, Zelda dungeons, the mansion from Resident Evil, Diablo, Shadow of the Colossus, TEXT ADVENTURES, etc….it’s insane. And it takes a crazy studio to make that kind of weird masterpiece. You can’t just hand this to any studio and expect them to step into those shoes comfortably.

    I’m interested; that’s for sure:)

  • http://www.facebook.com/JoseNelsonMayenMiranda Jose Nelson Mayen Miranda

One of the most underrated games ever, and one of favorite games of all time.

Hopefully it is a sequel. *SPOILERS*

I would like to see the continuation of the I can assume True ending where Nier disappears from memory to save Kaine. If anyone has read Grimoire Nier there is a ending E The Lost World where Kaine and Emil find Nier.

Would be great to play a sequel that is Kaine centered where at mid story they get Nier back and the rest of the story (whatever it may be) plays out.

  • noctis_nox

    I want Nier Replicant!!!!!!

    Nier sequel is great too!!!!!!

    ohoho

    this should prove interesting

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I do hope that if they end up making a NieR sequel, they use the same character for both the japanese and western version. I really disliked the hero’s looks in the western version, more so when the japanese version hero felt more fantasy like and didn’t felt as out of place as NieR’s western version hero did.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rogerio-Yoshikawa/100001014091065 Rogerio Yoshikawa

I fully agree with you, sir.

    • Solomon_Kano

I didn’t play the game, but wasn’t the western version’s hero the hero in the original Japanese 360 version? I recall hearing that he was changed for the Japanese PS3 version.

      • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Well, yes, you’re correct. The Xbox 360 japanese version featured the same hero we did get in the western version, but if I recall this correctly, the original hero was that of NieR’s replicant (The japanese ps3 version) which was then changed because SE assumed the western players would prefer playing with that oversized macho looking version of the hero. And same went for the 360 players in Japan, or so they’ve assumed :3

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

It’s true though. In the western world, sibling relationships aren’t as strong as they are in japan, so they decided to make it a father/daughter relationship. So naturally the main character would have to be older

        • Solomon_Kano

Huh. I’d say that was a fair assumption for them to make then. Even if I do prefer the design from Replicant.

  • ForeverFidelis

The most exciting thing about the prospect of a new Nier game is another Nier OST.

    My ears are ready

  • http://www.facebook.com/jake.caro Jake Caro

NIER! YES, I want another emotional tearing storyline plz.
    MAKE ME CRY. I’M READY.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

If there is one thing Nier clearly lacked was a decent budget to back up its development. Hopefully SE saw past the tragically misguided reviews (hello, gamespot) and realized its cult status among gamers – those who overlooked superfical flaws and dated visuals and were able to see the brilliance of narrative and design underneath.

I still get shivers down my spine when I remember the Forest of Myth section. Since MGS2 hadn’t I seen such striking, creative use of metalanguage in a video game. Brilliant stuff.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pablo-Mojica/100000579285904 Pablo Mojica

    Devola And Popola FTW

  • Solomon_Kano

Never played the first one, but I heard…mixed reviews. I also heard that it was made by the folks who made Drakengard though, (was it?) and, if it was, I have to give it a try.

To this day, Drakengard is still one of my favorite PS2 games. Flawed for certain, but still a great deal of fun.

    • Ryos

Don’t know how Drakengard compares because I haven’t gotten anywhere close to finishing it or the sequel, but darn if Nier wasn’t my favorite game of the generation so far other than Radiant Historia.  Another Nier game is an instant buy here…if that’s what it is.

      • Solomon_Kano

Y’know, I never did get around to Drakengard 2. Since you’ve played both, can you make a gameplay comparison to Nier? Is it anything like either of them or is it completely different?

        • Ryos

The biggest difference in the gameplay styles is because Drakengard 1/2 has 2 basic playstyles.  Nier has one main playstyle that’s a slightly more robust one of what Drakengard had on foot and like 20 other gameplay styles thrown in.  Though for me, the gameplay isn’t what made Nier so compelling, but rather the haunting soundtrack and great plot/characterization.

          • Solomon_Kano

Well, what made Drakengard stick with me was its story anyway, so I’m not really asking for want of similar gameplay but rather to gauge any similarities in overall design that it may have. And you gave the answer I was hoping for.

A great story is enough for me to overlook gameplay and vice-versa (though not nearly as often), so I’d wager that I’ll enjoy this game.

    • EvilAkito

I sadly couldn’t really get into Drakengard, but if you were able to enjoy it in spite of its numerous flaws, then you should have absolutely no trouble enjoying Nier. It’s a very well-made game (especially compared to Drakengard) and it’s become quite a cult favorite. I think it took a lot of people by surprise (myself included) since it really is a much better game than what you’d expect based on many of the published reviews. It had some flaws, but nothing that really cripples the game. And anything the game does well, it does VERY well.

      • Solomon_Kano

Honestly, the only issue I had with Drakengard as a game was that some points were just stupidly difficult. Beyond that I enjoyed everything else, though the story is really what held it together for me. I find enjoyment in some odd titles though (Gungrave: Overdose for example, which I had heard was terrible).

So if Nier is an improvement over Drakengard in terms of design, then I’ll be certain to check it out.

    • TeddyAltman

Drakengard had absolutely awful gameplay. The only reason i kept playing and didnt kill myself was the intense story. Nier manages to have a great story, amazing music, and at least PLAYABLE gameplay. The gameplay itself is nothing super special but it’s pretty fun. I loved Drakengard’s story, but jesus the gameplay was SO. BAD.

      • Solomon_Kano

The story was why I played too, but I didn’t find the game unplayable.

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

I bought the game but have yet to really get into it. Only 4 or 5 hours in.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

The beginning is, unfortunately, really slow. Just a lot of fetch quests….much like the first 3 hours or so of Epic Mickey. Rest assured, it gets really good once you start seeing more dungeons and get a few magic spells, and start getting partner characters. It’ll be a good game to pick up and make progress when you don’t have other things to play.

      • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

I hope so because the fetch quests are just awful. I might pick it back up again but WKC II and Xillia have my attention until….January lol

  • http://twitter.com/Soul_Slappy Sam Brien

Interesting. I wouldn’t mind seeing how a follow up would work. I hope they keep boar drifting, too!

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

    OMG!

It’s friday in Japan right now isn’t it?  So we should hear soon :D

I hope its only loosely related to Nier though. The story wrapped up nicely, so I’d rather see something more like a spiritual successor. Then again I hear the creator had like 3x as much script and background written than what actually made it into the game, so… :D just bring it on. Whatever it is, I hope reviewers will grow a brain this time.

I’m really interested to see who’s working on it, too. Perhaps a Square Enix/Marvelous AQ collaboration? I really enjoyed the Cavia teams games, despite their faults, so I hope they are still around just under a different name.

  • zweii

    Its a Nier concert.
