Isaac Clarke, You’ve Changed In Dead Space 3

By Spencer . October 3, 2011 . 3:00pm

Isaac Clarke, Youve Changed In Dead Space 3 Last week, Siliconera revealed Dead Space 3′s main setting is on a frozen planet, but Dead Space 3 doesn’t begin there. How did Isaac Clarke get to Tau Volantis?

In the beginning, Dead Space 3 is set aboard a command center where Isaac talks to the Captain. He sends Isaac on a mission to rescue a woman on Tau Volantis and bring her back to Mars. Isaac accepts the mission because there is a warrant out for his arrest and his alternative is to deal with EarthGov. He reluctantly descends on to the iceball along with Ellie.

This next part could be considered a major spoiler, so read at your own risk! It’s about how Isaac Clarke has "changed."

Isaac has a split personality in Dead Space 3 and "Shadow Isaac" taunts Isaac every chance he gets. For example, Shadow Isaac calls Isaac an idiot after he falls into a tunnel late in the game. Isaac complains this rescue mission isn’t his mission and the shadow retorts and tells Isaac he turns his back on the wrong things. Isaac shouts to the shadow to shut up, who replies to Isaac by saying he’s making all of the noise. Dead Space 3 is going to have this kind of banter – a sarcastic shadow and Isaac crossing tongues. Players will be able to see the shadow as a separate on screen character.

Isaac (and his shadow) will come in contact with a "marker" on the frozen world in Dead Space 3 too…

That sounds really ridiculous… I like it!

  • SirRichard

And then Isaac and his fast-talking streetwise sentient shadow will go on to fight intergalactic crime.

In all seriousness, I think this is going to shoot what little horror elements the series had in the foot. I dunno, I’m going to find it hard to be scared when the main character is engaging in the verbal equivalent slapping himself every few steps.

So… Prince of Persia The Two Thrones in ice planet space then? Could go both ways – if the banter is badly done, it’ll most definitely break the game. Even if the gameplay is refined to near perfection, if this part of the game is done badly  it’ll just stop being enjoyable. If they pull of a Two Thrones type of banter, good for them although I liked Sands of Time type of banter (2 people instead of 1 psycho) better.

lol That’s exactly what I thought. I hope the these two can make hilarity ensue.

now i so want to play!!!!

Jeezus, i thought destroying the marker should’ve stopped Isaac’s dementia. Now we get Dark Isaac a-la Prince of Persia: TTT. This guy’s the most unlucky bastard ever…next to Jackie Estacado at least.

I need to play 2. Since I still have not.

“Enough expository banter! Now we fight like men! And ladies! And ladies who dress like men! For Isaac…it is morphing time!”

  • JustThisOne

Hee hee, I really liked that in Penumbra – how Clarence makes fun of you the entire time?

    SPOILER
    SPOILER

Anyway, I kind of saw this coming – considering there were hints of Isaac going batty at the end of the first Dead Space, and throughout the second one. I’m thinking the whole split personality thing is a little too blatant, but it’s still kinda consistent I guess. I just feel sorry for the guy.

    • DanteJones

Yeah, although I’m pretty excited for this! It’ll be up to the voice actor to pull off being able to talk to himself, but if it’s the same guy from Dead Space 2 I think he’ll do a good job (Isaac’s VA from DS2 was pretty good!). I can only imagine how much it’ll add to the creepy factor to hear these constant conversations going on. XD

      • JustThisOne

        “No, you stop.”
        “No, you stop.”
        “No, you stop.”
        “No, you stop.”
        “No, you stop.”
        “No, you stop.”

        • DanteJones

Haha, I doubt it’ll happen like this, but it’d be cool if it was like Soul Nomad. Having a Gig around talking smack about everyone and everything would be awesome. XD

    • SolidusSnake

I haven’t played Dead Space 2 yet, but I really appreciated how the first game portrayed Isaac’s descent into madness, even if it was kinda obvious. The part where you have to protect your “girlfriend” while she opened a path for you was really creepy.

  • Barrit

Guess I won’t read this article lol. I’ve been playing all the Dead Spaces games in a row recently: Extraction, Dead Space, and currently Dead Space 2.

  • Thomas Evans

    This is such bull crap.

  • dahuuuundge

Do they really need to have Issac being taunted by a hallucination? Nicole’s presence in Dead Space 2 is not dramatic nor creepy at all, it’s just annoying. It’ll work out better if you don’t know what is hallucination or not. This shadow Issac is too obvious to carry any impact.

  • heartless141

and then at the end we all suddenly realize the shadow keep repeating one line over and over during the game.

    would you kindly…

I’ll see you in Arkham, Issac. Clearly, you hve some serious (mental) problems.

    Another Marker?

  • aoihana

What ya mean? He hasn’t changed all that much, he’s still freakin’ awesome.

Issac must face his shadow to gain a persona.

“I am a shadow, the True self!”

Hey, Visceral. Ubisoft called, they want their game back.

    Wow! It´s like Metro-dead-space :D

  • ndjn3979

Why does this sound like a bad idea?

  • PrinceHeir

still need to play Dead Space 2 >______<

the scenario looks tempting to look at but i will resist :P

oh god, there better not be a water temple lol..

  • http://twitter.com/Alos88 Alos88

If this is handled like the witty banter between the Prince and the Dark
Prince in Prince of Persia :The Two Thrones it could be kinda
    interesting.

Still, I hope there’s an option to turn it off for those who prefer the creepy atmosphere only silence can develop.

  • theoriginaled

so the game perfectly simulates what its like to have your little brother watch you play!? SWEET thats EXACTLY what I want in my entertainment.

I like the gameplay of the deadspace series, and the concepts of the story but the execution of the actual story doesn’t pan out to me. I hope they get it right this time. I don’t actually mean right, I’m saying, this in the name of progression.

  • Joseph King

I just hope its more tense and full of dread like the first game. DS2 was not nearly as intense as the first game…

    • http://twitter.com/edgarskulte Edgars Skulte

“DS2 was not nearly as intense as the first game”
This must be the funniest thing I ve heard about DS 2 lolI assume you are joking :D

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clint-Shirah/100000134067287 Clint Shirah

unless they revamp the gameplay the likelyhood of it being as intense as the first is unlikely, the problem here is, that if you played the first one you already knew what to expect with the 2nd so you’re not going to be nearly as surprised when something jumps out at you. in movies repeating the process works, in video games you have to continually reinvent the same product.

Omg im pre ordering right now. Collectors edition and all!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/chrisjohnsongoffe Chris Johnson

I think it wasn’t as intense as the first because the monsters were louder, more frequent and in your face … I mean the game practically begins with one tearing out of some poor bloke and screaming right into your mouth, all under a spotlight and you just end up thinking, “… Are you done?”. And I say “frequent” – it didn’t quite stop. At some point I had turn the volume down as things just got a little bit obnoxious.

  • Aaron Winiarczyk

Damn i can’t wait for this game. But plz take ur time with it. So many games nowadays are just rushed right through production.

  • Antonio Lancaster

I think, in order for them to make this almost bland intro to the game more interesting, they’d have to make the ice planet as dark and creepy as possible, because the average person would be thinking of one of the missions in modern warfare 2 in the snow. I think they’d have to make it eerily dark, use their traditional evil orchestra, and have Isaac in a position where he cant see anything for a period of time .
