Odin Sphere, God Hand, And GrimGrimore Coming To PS3 As PSN Donwloads

By Spencer . October 3, 2011 . 1:55am

Odin Sphere, God Hand, And GrimGrimore Coming To PS3 As PSN DonwloadsSoon, PlayStation Network will add a list of downloadable PlayStation 2 game. Sony is putting niche third-party titles like Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Ring of Red, and God Hand in their own section titled "rare classic games." It’s unclear if these titles will be updated with trophies or any other PlayStation 3 specific features.

These will be released on October 4 (tomorrow!) as part of Sony’s "Only on PSN" marketing campaign. Sony Computer Entertainment plans on pushing made for PS3 exclusives like Eufloria, Okabu, inFamous: Festival of Blood, and PixelJunk Sidescroller all of which will be released in October.

Since a rare classic section is coming to PlayStation Network, are there titles would you like to see on there?

Thanks for the tip Robin!

I seriously hope Sony does this more often (& price them reasonably. $10 is not that bad for some of these games). I cannot wait to get God Hand, maybe Maximo, and despite not finishing the PS2 version, Odin Sphere since I want to support VanillaWare.

#JustTooSweet!!!  Hey, #GodHand fans, to me, this sounds like Capcom is using PSN sales of #GodHand as justification to put in Gene in UMVC3.

    • Solomon_Kano

We already know all of the characters in UMVC3 and Gene isn’t one of em…

  • http://twitter.com/Pedazodezoquete Gabriel

This is awesome! I’d definitely love to see La Pucelle tactics, Guitaroo Man! Demento I mean Hunting grounds! oh so many titles I’d love to play again! Edit: OH YEAH! Also Growlanser generations and Shadow Hearts all of them! Do it Sony! if you also make them psvita compatible I’ll add 200 dollars to my wallet just to show how serious I am about buying all of them.

    • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

Insert comment that I wish La Pucelle Ragnarok could come instead.

Though, seriously, I love La Pucelle Tactics– I beat it. But the only way I’d want it on the PS3 is if it were the European one. Meaning the one that comes with New Game+ instead of forcing you to completely restart like the American/first Japanese version, instead.

However, I think a PSP to PS3 port of La Pucelle Ragnarok would be a dream come true, but I guess I can accept even the possibility of more PS2 games. The PS2 had such a treasure trove.

      • Fitzkrieg

Unfortunately, Mastiff Games has a stranglehold on the La Pucelle trademark and, from what NISA has told us, are unwilling to budge on it without being paid an inordinate sum of money.

So it looks like we’re stuck with no chance of LP: R over here, unfortunately.

That is, unless Mastiff decides to loosen up a bit, anyway.

  • PersonaBull

Okay, now that I’ve calmed down a bit, I’ll make a coherent comment.
I’m really hoping that these PS2-PSN titles will also be playable on the PSVita. I’ve wanted a portable Odin Sphere ever since I played Odin Sphere. I know FFX is going to be Vita-playable, so I’m wondering if these PSN titles will be the same. The emphasis on “PSN” and not “PS3″ has me hoping.
As for PS2 titles I’d like to see put on PSN, the first Ar Tonelico would be excellent. I suppose Star Ocean: Till The End of Time would be okay, too. I was SEVERELY underleveled when I got near the end of the game, and I apparently deleted the entire save file out of frustration (really there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t backtrack and train, and I couldn’t beat any of the standard enemies). Rogue Galaxy was apparently very good. I actually have a PS2 copy, but I still have yet to play it. I’d also like to see the Xenosaga trilogy, since I can’t find a copy of Episode III anywhere.

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

Same here, I’m hoping that many of these titles will be playable on the PSVita as well.

    • PrinceHeir

it’s actually much easier to find a copy of episode III nowadays compared early this year where i spent $120 on a brand new black label sealed game(i was desperate on finishing the trilogy since i always wanted to play these games back when i saw them on game magazines)

      http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000G82R20/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1317707068&sr=8-1&condition=new

you see the “Deal Tavern” store??? that’s where you buy the game. trust me they’ll give you the real thing. a few weeks ago i bought shinobi and nightshade new and sealed. to my surprised it ship a day early and it was definitely new and black label sealed. not to mention the case is using the original PS2(the ones with the memory card holders) instead of reprints ones.

for a 2001 and 2003 game that came in as new as a newly released game is just amazing.

last year i couldn’t even find the game. then i saw it on a local store brand new sealed black label(which i have been looking at it over a year now) since nobody bought i might as well take a dip since im almost finished at episode II.

though it backfired because they actually had a second copy of the game(they only showed it a few months after i purchased it) now they’re selling it at $99 but the Deal Tavern store actually stock up recently so.

  • IceRomancer

I would love to see Digital Devil Saga for download! I loved those games!

Oh and yay for God Hand!! Wheeeee! :D

  • http://twitter.com/EdgeKun Ed Powell

Very interesting. Here’s to wondering if we’ll be finally seeing PS2 games being re-recognized by Sony, or if it’s more ports. If it is PS2 being re-recognized, then I foresee a floodgate being opened by this action. Regardless it’s good to see these games (Especially Odin Sphere and Godhand for me ;o;) getting some attention again.

  • Raiyu

I for one, am happy. I missed out on a lot of PS2 games and I’ve always wanted to play God Hand and Odin Sphere. So I’ll gladly be spending $20 for both of these games. And I hope we get more of them.

  • amagidyne

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Grim Grimmoire would definitely work better as a PSN Vita title.  Some of those levels lasted an hour or more.  It needs to be a pick up and play title with a sleep mode.

It’s very good to see PS2 games (finally) being brought to PSN.

I third an SRW: OGs and OGG import section.

    • Guest

GG on Vita would actually really be cool..

  • PK212

Hell yeah. Now all my favorite games are on the PS3:

    God Hand
    Bayonetta
    No More Heroes

    :D

  • Kris

I wouldn’t mind seeing Soul Nomad on here…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jiggy-Pepper/100000804352621 Jiggy Pepper

OmGod Hand! So pumped for this!

Others I could think of would be the Atelier Iris games, the .Hack games, SMT games, and maybe some of the Gundam games.

    • Solomon_Kano

.Hack! .Hack! .Hack! I would be…I can’t even describe how happy I’d be if we got Infection through Redemption.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Javon-Hernandez/706489182 Javon Hernandez

Hopefully they’ll fix the horrid slowdown issues in Odin Sphere. Then it can be perfect.

  • MrRobbyM

My prayers have been answered! Hallelujiah!

  • TheGoddamnedKamina

I don’t know, I’d rather have boxed copies then digital copies :T

I’ll put off buying these until They reveal some kind of HD remake.

    • Solomon_Kano

For these games? So far, with the exception of ICO and SOTC, all the HD remakes have been for games that were popular when they released so that people can give them another go — these games were far from popular, so, to me at least, it’s a revelation that they started such an asked for program off with such niche titles.

Really. Think about it. What are the chances of Capcom giving God Hand an HD remake? Vanillaware returning to their old games? For Vanillaware, maybe a slim chance. God Hand? Capcom won’t even put Mega Man games out, so the devil would likely die of hypothermia before they’d give God Hand a second look lol.

Sorry for the long response btw. Had more to say than I thought lol.

      • TheGoddamnedKamina

If that’s so, I really, REALLY don’t see any point to all the hype people are giving this. If it’s just the same ol’ games we had for PS2, Then buying them again on PS3 seems like a huge waste of money to me, no matter how much they cost. With this being Q4/Game season, I really don’t see the point of buying games you already own

Unless you never owned them/owned a PS2. but seeing the people’s hype for these game I’m pretty sure they’ve atleast played through them.

        • Solomon_Kano

The hype comes from able to own these games again or, for many more, for the first time.

There are tons of people, myself included, who missed out on Odin Sphere and God Hand during the PS2′s lifetime and are happy at the chance to own them for the first time. There are people who had them and no longer do that want them again. Honestly, and if this sounds rude or anything that’s not my intent, I don’t understand how you don’t understand the hype. I’m not saying you have to be excited for it, but if you’ve ever been excited for any game release then I’m not sure how you can’t understand people being excited for games they want to play.

  • AaqibRawat

God hand and odins sphere being in there is fantastic news!

i hope a lot of people who have heard about how amazing god hand is,

Go out of there way to play it and make it a top seller on psn hopefully then we might get to see gene spank Dat ass {pheonix} in mvc3

    Odins sphere is also awesome can we get princess crown? {or is that already there ?}

i hope that sells a ton as well more money for them means more 2D action goodness from those wonderfull people!

Trophies ? smoothed graphics Hd filters?

Octoberthe the month of the broken wallet :P

    • superdry

We’ll probably never see Princess Crown unless Atlus JP willing to use a Saturn emulator on the PS3 since the original source code was lost (the PSP version was running on top of a Saturn emulator).

  • SolidusSnake

So are these getting an HD upgrade or anything? PS2 games tend to look really, really bad on modern flatscreens. At any rate I would rather have backwards compatibility on the PS3 rather than have to pay for my PS2 games again on PSN.

    • kupomogli

I own a 60GB so I don’t have that problem, but if they released a PS3 Slim with BC, I’d pack up my old model and use that instead.

I also, you know that PSX games are upscaled to 1080p.  Maybe PS2 games will be upscaled as well.  The upscaling looks really nice on most games.  Draw dropping sometimes.

      • SolidusSnake

Yeah? I do remember hearing that the PS3 upscaled old Playstation games, but by the time I got one I had forgotten about that feature. Next time I play FFVII or Star Ocean I’ll have to use my PS3 :D

I wouldn’t mind re-purchasing a few PS2 games if they’re upscaled nicely. The PS2 had so many classic and amazing games, but it is kinda hard to go back to those fugly low res graphics after seeing all the eye candy that this console generation has to offer.

  • Guest

I can still get a physical copy of both Vanillaware games for cheap on Amazon. Don’t really need a downloadable versions but neat I guess. There’s an over reaction to this news.

    • Sorrows_Neptune

I agree. There is plenty of excellent PS2 games that are much rarer that are more deserving of a re-release.

But hey, it’s a start right?

    • Solomon_Kano

For those of us who no longer have PS2s and don’t have the old PS3s with backwards-compatibility, this is damn great news.

Personally, I liquidated my whole PS2 library when I bought a PS3 (terrible, terrible mistake), so I’m practically jumping for joy at the fact that I can have these on my PS3 — especially since, considering how niche they were upon their original release, these would never have gotten an HD re-release.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

The reaction is due to PSN finally getting a PS2 library. Not necessarily due to the starting games line-up.

  • http://twitter.com/JayFalconi Jackson Falconi

Got this from PS Blog: “The PS2 games are in their original form. These aren’t remasters, and
therefore won’t have Trophy support. But they retain their original
gameplay, look, and charm through and through.”

But I’m still getting the good ol’ PS2 games, specially the ones I haven’t tried yet ;D

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

The floodgates have opened! This is great. Not only do we get ps1 games, we’re also getting ps2 games, and both systems had AMAZING libraries, especially for rpg fans.

    Top of my list:

    - Star Ocean Till the End of Time;
    - Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga 1/2
    - SMT Lucifer’s Call
    - Persona 3/4
    - Dark Cloud 1/2
    - Unlimited SaGa
    - Wild Arms remake (on the eu store :D)
    - Pretty much all of the Suikoden games on the ps2
    - Grandia games on the ps2
    - Shadow Hearts series

I’d also name Rogue Galaxy and Valkyrie Profile 2 but I got those recently (physical copies :P)

  • http://tiny.cc/justintvbayorgasmic Genesis

    Odin Sphere <3

  • http://twitter.com/Veruses Verus

Will it be “HD-Friendly”? PS2 games look like crap on the PS3.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Should, they are playing on an emulator for the PS3 instead of playing essentially the original version intended for PS2.

    • Fitzkrieg

Have you SEEN the graphics for Odin Sphere?! The sprites are hand-drawn! There’s no way that it could POSSIBLY look bad on a big screen! Right? Right?

      I friggin’ hope so, anyway.

In other news: HOLY CRAP! God Hand, GrimGrimoire AND Odin Sphere on PSN?!

BEST THANKSGIVING GIFT EVER, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING THESE GAMES MORE LOVE, SONY!

  • zelkojade

these are all good and all but wouldnt it be a good idea if they had some program where you trade your game in for a voucher of the same game  to have on your system.it would work well with ps2-ps3 transfers as well as psp-vita im pretty sure i don’t wan’t to lug my psp and vita around when it comes out just so i can play dissidia duodecim or access my vitas features. odin sphere looks good and i never got to try it out,i might dish in,depending on how the situation is handling.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mpureka Mike Pureka

While HD Odin Sphere would totally sell me a PS3, I find that I don’t care about this at all.  Good for people who missed these games the first time, but irrelevant to me.

  • Red9ro

Oh my dog I was playing Odin Sphere these days, still didn’t beat it!

  • Draparde

Wonderful! hopefully this means more PS2 games on PSN, i wonder how much they will cost.

  • http://twitter.com/ShadowJetX Edward Sayese

    Okage Shadow King

    Make it happen SCE.

  • Sorrows_Neptune

I would like all of the Shin Megami Tensei games that were released for PS2; since each of them can cost anywhere from $25-$80.

  • Solomon_Kano

    OH MY FUDGEKING GOD! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

I don’t even know what’s more exciting: the fact that a PS2 Classics downloadable line finally exists, or the fact that they chose to launch it with ODIN SPHERE AND GOD HAND…TOMORROW.

Seriously? Now if they add Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII down the line, my life will be complete. Until they announce something even more awesome.

I mean, seriously, I’m darn-near fvcking dancing right now, how happy I am.

  • Solomon_Kano

One more thing…does this mean we may get Viewtiful Joe and Okami eventually? :D Though not major unit movers themselves, they were definitely more popular than God Hand.

  • zelkojade

does anyone sense ps2 classics being a new tab on the store, like next to the ps1 classics ?and i dont mind if it doesnt have trophy support.back in the day these games didn’t need them to make them what they are today.

  • Kauzu

    duplicate

  • Kauzu

I want to know if these will be playable on psp or more likely vita.  Having a cloud save functionality where the save is playable on both the ps3 and vita without having to do bunch of file transferring would be fantastic.

This is awesome news – I missed Odin Sphere the first time around and would love to try it!

  • prinnydood123

This is maddnes!!! if we can play PS2 game on the ps3 now let us play it off the disc now!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J24UY7QAEKQY576PHZYS3EN6BA Celine

Thank you. Maybe this time the game won’t lag to hell and back @_@

  • PrinceHeir

yes all of these titles are awesome O______o

God Hand(have the PS2 original; might pic this up)
GrimGrimoire(woo haven’t bought this game yet)
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory Odin Sphere(same with GrimGoire)
Ring of Red(i have been looking for this title for some time now O___O)

amazing stuff :P i want a Xenosaga Trilogy since Bamco would probably not remaster this into HD(despite buying all three in original black label SEALED) and Shadow Hearts Trilogy(well not really a trilogy;since only the first and second are related but the first 3 games would be awesome)

oh and other fighting games like Samurai Shodown Anthology(Japanese Version; US has no blood and remove story in V), KOFXI, KOF 98 UM, KOF2002 UM(still no US PS2 version WTF),Mark of the wolves, Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus i can’t find arcade sticks for PS2 nowadays so putting this on PSN would be awesome. though SNK would probably sell these games one at a time(like the Samurai Shodown series)

    • Fitzkrieg

I love the Xenosaga series as much as the next guy, but I have to confess…

The battle systems on the first two games were AWFUL. Oh, and MOMO may be one of my favourite characters from those games, but she grated on me so damned hard in II. Seriously, her voice was TERRIBLE. Every time you went to heal: ‘Mystic powers! Grant me a miracle!’ in the most annoying ‘I’m like 5 years old voice’ I’ve ever borne witness to.

That said, I love II for it’s plot (Crispy Freedude is a fantastic Albedo), and III fixed everything that was wrong with I and II (plus you could get MOMO to dash up and punch eldritch horrors in the gut to kill them, despite having a perfectly usable bow), so it all turned out great in the end.

Overall, definitely one of my favourite series, and I would pay for a rerelease.

Addendum: Has anyone else noticed that the name of this article says ‘donwloads’? Just thought I’d point that out.

      • PrinceHeir

        lol what???

honestly the battle system in Episode I and II are AMAZING. probably the best in any JRPG. the boost system and stock(in Episode II) are soo good. literally the fast paced mechanic is amazing. too bad you can’t customize attacks in Episode II like in Episode I. or learn new ones.

and yeah the voice was a hit in miss in Episode II(everything in Episode I is PERFECT) though episode II change of voice actors are kinda better in other characters. like Jin Uzuki, Canaan(WTF didn’t like he’s voice in Ep III; no offense to Steve Blum, amazing actor but the VA in Ep II is much better)
i actually like MOMO’s voice in Episode II. i don’t know she sound more of a teenager than a little girl(hence why she looks a little older than ep I) oh and Chaos’s voice seems to be better also in Ep II and Ep III.

i actually love the ending in Episode II and the final music with albedi is one of the best moments in video game history. though i would like to see Soraya Saga’s version(where in Episode I; the vision of febronia where KOS-MOS attacks UDO and i read at the net that Albedo and Junior was supposed to team up against Shion and KOS-MOS)

man definitely feeling some moments in Xenosaga. kina wish namco didn’t interfere. it would have become one of the best JRPG series ever made.

  • PersonaBull

For the record, I just played through -that- battle in the Netherworld and even used a Blizzard and the slowdown was non-existent. If the only thing that bothered you about Odin Sphere was that terrible slowdown, the PSN release is excellent. It looks beautiful on an HDTV (as opposed to the PS2 plugged in with A/V cables). Another thing to note, in my PS2 copy, enemies would take a second or so to spawn when entering an area, but on the PS3 copy they are loaded up at the same time.

So, if you really liked Odin Sphere like I did, $10 is beyond worth it for re-buying the PSN version.

  • reddawg_10

i have downloaded this god hand and it is very disappointing, after completing the game you are unable to carry forward your powers to the next game which is available in the ps2 version. so you always have to start over from scratch. part of the fun is the ability to start over with additional powers. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!! but the gameplay is the same. can sony fix this problem?

  • http://twitter.com/KC_MCDOHL Chris Holmes

Playstation 2 titles? Suikoden 3, 4 and 5. Lets not forget that Suikoden 3 never made a PAL release. This would be a great way for fans to get the game LEGALLY. Which I’m sure both the fans and Konami would prefer.

While we’re at it, lets get Suikoden I on PSN in Europe, also, and Suikoden II on PSN worldwide.
