Onechanbara Z: Kagura Comes Out In January With Even More Ridiculous Outfits

By Spencer . October 5, 2011 . 10:51am

Campiness makes D3Publisher’s Onechanbara series stand out. How many other games do you have a lead character slashing zombies dressed in a bikini and cowboy hat? Onechanbara Z: Kagura equips the new lead character Kagura in Aya’s familiar get up and Saaya is dressed sort of like Saki.

But, you don’t have to use the default costumes! Onechanbara Z: Kagura has a "dresses up" system where you can give Kagura suggestive swimwear. This extra costume will be distributed via a product code bundled with first print copies of the game.

God, if there is one game that should make it to Europe(Xbox360…) other than Senran Kagura, it’s this, Onechanbara Z: Kagura!!!!!!!
(you get it? Both with Kagura…..lol..)

  • puchinri

    I thought slashing zombies in a bikini and cowboy hat was more fanservice than camp? But the game is incredibly campy it seems. Seems they added to the fanservice again too. ^u^;

I think they could have made the swimsuit sexy but stylish at least. Those studs look horrendous on there.

    • mikanko

It’s always been about both I think.

Only played one of these games years ago, and only thing I really found memorable was how drenched in zombie blood your character gets while wearing close to nothing.  It’s kinda ridiculous.

Like, if you ever watch the Japanese edit of Kill Bill where Uma Thurman kills all those guys without the scene cutting to black and white and there’s just tons of fake red blood splattering everywhere.  Just replace her with a mostly naked low res polygon girl in a cowboy hat, and make it quite noticeably less awesome for other reasons too, and you kinda have what this series aims at being… sorta

      but yeah, definitely campy.

      • puchinri

Oh, no, I know the game is about both, but pretending what they wear is campy rather than fanservice is some kind of denial. Or being obstinate.

Lol, a lot of stuff by Tarantino is made of camp though, so that would apply. (Even the serious stuff or campy stuff w/serious scenes.)

The camp is spilling out of the game of course, lol, but the fanservice is kind of lolzy in the first, kind of obnoxious here.

        • mikanko

Ah, guess I’ve just always seen the fanservice as obnoxious in this series, and thought the split as 50/50

The one thing I find odd is in all these screen shots I don’t see the girls drenched in blood like the old games, and with more focus on the loldressup bits maybe they are going more one way than another.

Yeah, Japanese edit of Kill Bill is just the first thing I could think of where there was that much fake blood spraying everywhere, and that’s 100% camp.  Was kinda tired when I posted!

          You need to be on MSN more, I didn’t have anyone to talk with about how awesome Kaiji 2 was x_x;

          • puchinri

That’s because they are indeed trying to sell the fanservice harder. x’D
So now, there is an actual larger focus on fanservice than there is camp. In the first one, I think it was fanservice-y, but I thought it was really campy. More campy than anything (going by what I saw). But that probably won’t apply here.

Lol, you just reminded me of my friend and Tiger & Bunny. I’ll probably get on some time today, but I haven’t had the kind of free time lately where I can sit on messengers uninterrupted.

          • mikanko

It’s possible, maybe likely, but it still just is what it is.  The PS2 games still had some of the dress up bits, at least the third PS2 game did.  Any game where you get to put bloomers on the girl you’re about to go massacre zombies with definitely has it’s fair share of fanservice.

Maybe they’ve stopped covering the fanservice with as much blood and guts as previously because they’re budget has gone to making the polygon girls look better instead.  Or maybe the guys who were buying this game complained that their cowgirl-neechan and imouto being all covered in zombie innards was grossing them out and they weren’t getting the desired self masturbatory effect they wanted from purchasing the game.

            I couldn’t tell ya! =/

let’s see it outside of japan, D3!

    • puchinri

Zombie slashing + hot sexy male bodies = universal appeal as well.
If they add a hot dude running around in a thong, sales will go up double.

  • Darkrise

What would make this even better is if it was region-free. But D3 might bring this over they have before. Hopefully.

  • KOKAYI5

So they don’t even care what women think anymore, huh?

    • Ryos

      Did the earlier Onechanbara games?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Iris-Repliforce/100001201063895 Iris Repliforce

Actually In the earlier games Only Aya and Reiko ever had these types outfits not counting one of the bosses or guest characters.

        • KOKAYI5

what characters in the game are male? or is the appeal of the games just women killing zombies?

          • Exkaiser

It’s just about women killing zombies.

          • KOKAYI5

no one cares about plot when it comes to action games now?
don’t settle for subpar or they’ll give you more of that.

          • Exkaiser

Historically, how much have people cared about plot in action games?

Good plot in an action game is pretty alright, but to be frank, I don’t think games like Shinobi or God Hand would really be improved with masterfully-written stories.

That said, I don’t think gameplay, the reason those two games are fantastic, is the primary reason people like Onechanbara.

      • KOKAYI5

I’m just tired of the heartless industry doing anything with characters to make a buck. Can’t a characters personality sell them instead of their skimpy clothes? Let’s make a game where NO ONE shows their breasts. I’m speaking as someone who likes sexy women. It’s still gone too far.

        • mikanko

This series has been doing this for several years though.  It’s a low budget 2nd rate game that’s always been aimed at pleasing people wanting campy zombie action and shallow sexism all wrapped up in one.

The only thing that’s really changed is the series used to be a 2k yen budget game, and was thusly under more radars when it was a PS2 game.

I don’t really disagree with your criticisms, but asking for Tamsoft to change the games formula seems like a bit of barking up the wrong tree.

          • KOKAYI5

if all the small companies stop doing it it’ll just be the big ones left doing it. And people will notice and write them off as commercial and head to the small companies. And if the big companies want to make money they’ll have to pretend to care and stop doing it too. In order to reclaim the fans. And then NO ONE WILL BE DOING IT!

My dream is that sexy characters like this have a much depth and personality as someone found in Lord of the Rings or a Joh Grisham novel. Or in a RPGs.

          • Guest

            Jesus Christ.

Are you really expecting the producers of a soft porn game to give a damn about character depth?

          • mikanko

Pretty much what Virvum said.  This game has always been a shallow bit o’ open sexism and camp.  It’s not for everyone, but they have their niche audience they’re trying to cater to, so there’s no reason they’ll want to change anytime soon.

I had a lot more fun with Zombies vs. Ambulance when I tried out old Simple 2000 games, and have had no desire to touch an Oneechanbara game since, but it doesn’t mean what they’re doing is wrong if someone else likes the games.  Your distaste comes off a bit like lobbying Penthouse Magazine to step their game up when it comes to how well written their articles are.

Some things just aren’t meant to appeal to everyone.

          • KOKAYI5

            *to Mikanko and Virvum*
You don’t have to have thing appeal to everyone but to me it’s wrong to disregard other people’s feelings. They are trampling on women even more after years of already doing so. I think it’s time to stop it. They can make a game with sexy women in it and not go this far. They’re being lazy. Plot. Action. A little sexy. And fun. And you’ve got a game. But instead they just do fun, extreme sex, and action, and gore. And as long as we buy this stuff we’re enabling them. We have to raise our standards. People often say in the future people won’t have morals and instead they’ll all be over-sexed and greedy. Because the two thing most people care about is lust and wealth.

          • mikanko

In response to the other post.

I just think you should pick your battles.  This is a small company that doesn’t make a lot of money, and whose games aren’t considered all that great.  They have their fans, and can barely afford to supplement them with these games.  That’s it.  I don’t feel a need to criticize people for liking something I don’t.

They’re sexist and objectify women in a bad light, and it sucks, but there are far more harmful things out there that do the same thing.  As Vivrum said, this is basically porn for video games.  It’s not like it’s super popular or widely accepted.  It’s pretty niche.  I see more issue to be taken with examples of yours like 3rd Birthday.  It’d make more sense to take issues with a hollywood blockbuster objectifying women, than getting bent out of shape over the movie Zombie Strippers.

Tons of my favorite video games have zero plot, so I think your priorities might be a bit different than several people out there who play games as well.  Or what you consider to be a meaningful plot is far different than I.  I think games should concentrate on being good games first and foremost, narrative isn’t dire.

    • Guest

      Should they?

Also are you implying lesbians don’t count as women?

      • KOKAYI5

no I mean they put women in anything and won’t stop the stereotype of “sex sells”.

      • puchinri

Pretending that fanservice made by males for males is the same as fanservice made for lesbians is a little silly. Not to say there isn’t overlap at times, but it is not the same at all.

        • Guest

Well, in my experience it overlaps more often than it doesn’t, especially in games/anime/manga that feature an all-female cast there is often a lot of yuri subtext.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/GuiltyRaioh ShinkaRaioh

“Our” Yuri is different than the “Girl” Yuri tho, I can’t tell how much as I am still no girl, but I don’t think they are as simple minded as we are.

Then again I would be a bad hypocrite when I’d say this is too much of the good, cause frankly I love it, although my mind is twisted and beyond salvation~

          • Guest

You are right, there are some differences but they don’t really apply to subtext.

          • puchinri

Yes, but that’s also because that’s made to appeal to men. Look at K-On, yes, it has a huge female fanbase. But there’s a reason that most of the fans are male and that it runs in a seinen magazine. You do know that men enjoy yuri too, don’t you?

The overlap isn’t as great as you would think. Which is why there are two differnt genres of ‘yaoi’ (yaoi and then bara, each made by wo/men for wo/men) and yuri magazines where there’s yuri by men for men, and then magazines where it’s by women for women.

My friend is bisexual, but she doesn’t read most yuri for a reason. It wasn’t written for her. It was written for males to enjoy yuri relationships in a way they wanted to see them.

          • KOKAYI5

this is all besides the point, it doesn’t matter is lesbian or anybody WANTS to see this. What I saying is that a character should not be made to wear something regardless of their personalities just to sell a game. Like having Lightning of FF13 wear a swimsuit to battle.

If guy and lesbians want to see this, than go all-out and say why the character likes to dress that way. Don’t just put her in it say something about it. Does she love the human body and doesn’t want to restraint it? Is she in love with someone and want them to notice her at all cost. Anything rather than just saying y’know sex sells, let’s do this to make money.

          • puchinri

@KOKAYI5:disqus  True, it is. But it bugs the **** out of me that so many people on here are starting to pretend (well, actually believe) that somehow, all magical girl transformations are the same as ones in games w/fanservice for dudes and that fanservice of women is somehow for lesbians too. There’s some huge lack and gap of understanding of how the real world and inequality works.

That’s a good point though that doesn’t get addressed often (and especially here). That kind of reminds me of all that crap that came with 3rd Birthday.

What you say would be ideal, but that’d be asking too much of devs to do and gamers to really think about, obviously. In the end, apparently the only that matters here is getting as much T&A as possible. Because women aren’t real people anyway, ya know? :/
Or rather yet, women have as much rights as they need now anyway, so it should be fine if they get sexualized and objectified whenever for the pleasure or men. That’s how the world works obviously.

          • KOKAYI5

            *@ below comment by PUCHINRI*
3rd Birthday threw away a strong, smart, grown woman for a little girl in a sexy woman’s body. They acted like she was gonna woman-up and whip some ass by the end of the game, but it took almost the whole game. She talked smack in battle only twice I remember, a phrase or two after dropping some foes. If it were the true Aya she would’ve been like Ken from Street Fighther as she whipped ass of monsters.

Maybe they’ll come a time when a dev company is run by a woman or at leas t has a main woman doing the script. Maybe then I’ll be able to see badass woman who are sexy, strong, and an important backstory.

i hope we could customize tons of clothes in this game :D

    • mikanko

Cero Z games don’t always sell very well in Japan, and Sony has a minimum number of copies needed to be printed for every title that comes out there in physical form.

Tamsoft is the games developer, and their website states pretty clearly that their studios aren’t currently equipped with the necessary tools to develop for PS3.  Small developers have a harder time developing games for multiple systems than people often realize.

Small Japanese market niche titles that don’t sell that great wind up on Xbox 360 more than PS3 in general.  It’s the less prohibitive of the two systems to release games on, at least in Japan.

      • malek86

“Tamsoft is the games developer, and their website states pretty clearly that their studios aren’t currently equipped with the necessary tools to develop for PS3.”

Or is it? The recent Compile Heart teaser site for Touch-shiyo!, which is confirmed to be for PS3, has a Tamsoft copyright on the bottom of the page. Unless they are just doing some general planning and it’s actually IF/CH who is tasked with the development.

        • mikanko

          Ah, didn’t know about that.

Just going by their homepage only showing 360 and no PS3 on the company info bit.  My guess would be they’re not handling much of the development for Touch Shiyo.

If they are working on PS3 dev it probably started well after this Oneechanbara game started, and porting it would hypothetically be no simple task.

      • PrinceHeir

i know they niche and all, but i have been wanting to have another Onnechanbara game for awhile now.

  • hush404

    0_o oh my…

  • KOKAYI5

Wouldn’t it be enough to just have characters that are attractive. Does it really need to go this far. Showing a little skin, fine, but this is a slap in the face. And insult to people who want attractive characters with plot to match. Not more skin more sex in an already over-sexed world.

EDIT: Consider this–I like Tifa of FF7. AND I like her breast. I put her in the party. I care about her backstory. I like her fighting style. I don’t only care about her cup size.

    • puchinri

Fanservice is getting to be a stickier place in gaming (and stuff like comics). I don’t know if devs even care anymore at times. Hence, why I often feel kind of disappointed with some stuff lately. It’s like, no matter the genre, more and more female characters are given skimpier outfits (and the males are all covered like they’re going to the artic), and they’re becoming eyecandy as much as they are healers.

I think sexy characters (male and female) that have a variety of scantily clad outfits between, if we must have any at all, and all with personality (and hopefully, not falling prey to the usual gender tropes and especially not, females heal and males fight types), would be so much better.

The first onechanbara didn’t seem as bad to me, because the fanservice didn’t feel quite as in your face (from what I saw), and the camp was oozing out of it. But with games like this one and Senran Kagura, they’re pretty much selling the sex appeal. (I mean, Senran Kagura’s info and marketing was pretty much, “TITSSSSSS!” and then, “oh, and uh, this is also a brawler! Please don’t forget, even though we’re only telling you that and not showing you.”)

Heck, I think devs could make sexually appealing and attractive female (and male) characters without showing so much skin. But to me, I start thinking they’re just trying to appeal to the lowest base and do whatever is possible to make sales when the characters are revealing skin all over (and posed just right to show it off).

As a recent example, NIS’s new game. The witch could totally cover up even better (and her bust could be shrunken down too), and they could still sell her as sexy, but this way, they’re just emphasizing how much sexier she is compared to the “ugly” witch (who we haven’t seen, and could technically be hot herself) and how great she is for fanservice.

And while I like Harada’s art fair enough, I miss Nomura Ryouji. At least when his characters have a huge bust, they’re generally covered up and have full figures in general (so it looks less like a stick w/huge boobs). NIS themselves went from games focused around female characters with personality (and a variety of sex appeal without all being scantily clad or relying on male gaze fanservice) to making games where the female characters aren’t the actual main character and they’re fanservice. It’s kind of weird and sad.

      • mikanko

liked for shoutouts to Nomura Ryouji.

        • puchinri

Lol, thanks. I think he totes deserves the appreciation. (And I miss his art in their games so much.)

          • mikanko

Indeed.  His li’l digital calendar thingies are probably the only pay to dl art stuffs I’ve got from one of those websites that’re better known for far more nefarious bits.  Just an excuse to support the artist and all.

Though I suppose everyone has their own taste when it comes to fanservice etcetera.

      • KOKAYI5

But to me, the buttomline, this is lazy. We’re suppose to look the other way or even buy this game even though it has no plot, and is just violence and sex and maybe fun factors. As tech progresses I think so should story writing and gameplay. I want the whole package. But everytime I say something here about it I hit with “why do you care” or “it’s no big deal” type comments. Some of which from people who seem to be women! I would think women would care more!

Is that how it is now. Have people just accepted sexism and said that’s how it is and just let it go. As a black guy I don’t let racism slide. So everytime I see stuff like this I wonder. Would my sister like this? Would she respect it?  It’s fine to draw whatever you want for yourself, that’s to entertain YOU. But when you show it to the world, you have a job to, if you care about others, be fair and respectful to them.

It’s just time to stop sexism and all the quick easy ways of selling products. Stereotypes in any form are bad. If you except them, you’re a part of the problem. We’re suppose to fight for what’s right. And by banding together maybe that company we’ll hear us out.

        • puchinri

Agreed, it is terribly lazy (and gross among other things). And I very much so agree there! I think that’s a place that devs are leaving behind when they shouldn’t be, whether or not they’re conscious of it. Before they try to make such grandiose advancements in graphics, they really need to start remembering to improve and further the writing, storytelling and gameplay (and quit pandering too). Yeah, that’s happened a lot more lately too, and it’s grating and terrifying. And I’ve seen some of the ladies here say some especially ridiculous stuff! It’s really disappointing to see that from this community especially. (Not that I know why I held them to standard.) I realize though, sometimes it’s women who agree to this stuff more than guys, and that just means they especially have been conditioned to not only accepting but encouraging it. And the more this kind of crap is normalized, the more people are going to let it go.

I think you make excellent points with that paragraph, and that’s a mentality that people often ask others to consider when referring to things like this. But I think not only the devs, but gamers even really don’t care about respect (and equality). Less so than they used to probably. And it shows (and it looks terribly ugly for gamers and the industry).

Agreed, and I actually had a conversation with one of the girls on here about the stereotypes thing. I think a lot of people on Siliconera accept (and probably enjoy, on some level) stereotypes. And very easily. It’s probably going to be a long time before more people start calling out this crap. But at least on some of the posts, multiple people will call a game on its crap, so I kind of have some hope. (And thank you for all your insightful points.)

          • KOKAYI5

Thank you. I’m glad you at least understand. I’m glad you agree too, but even if you didn’t I would be mad if you acting like I was bring up some foreign concept.

One last thing: I love sexy-looking girls. Okay? LOVE ‘EM. But I think there’s a line you don’t cross. Sexy with clothes on. Sexy with still a decent story behind them. That’s how yo do it. When I draw my characters I don’t wanna feel ashamed of them later on down the line. It’s fluff otherwise. Like have a cast full of super cute character with no depth. It’s the same thing.

            GAME INDUSTRY! STEP IT UP!

          • puchinri

Agreed entirely~. As much as I like my some fanservice and love some sexy characters (male or female), there’s a way to do sexy that’s respectful, and the game industry does need to step it up~! I’m sure if there are those of us calling it out and maybe even boycotting some of the worse stuff in some way or something, a change will come, slowly but surely~. …It better anyway. =n=

To be clear, I wouldn’t say I disagree with most of what you’re saying.

I just think begrudging this developer and their fans of this guilty pleasure just seems kinda misplaced, even if I can’t abide the content. They’re a pretty small developer who’ve not exactly seen lotsa growth over the years. I don’t think their niche following will be lining up in a crowd outside popular Japanese convenient stores to pickup this game on the release date.

I’d rather see equality of the sexes addressed in good games.  I’d say your irked’ness towards Senran is a little more justified.  That game has a writing and production staff that have apparently contributed to things with merit, so there’s less of an excuse.

Oneechanbara series has its fans, and I feel weird telling people they’re wrong to like what they like.  While the game gets coverage on Sili, I’d easily say popular opinion of the series is extremely low.  It’s a little revolting how accepted it may seem here, but I don’t see the game receiving a lot of recognition by and large.
