Keiji Inafune, Record Of Agarest War Director, Disgaea Artist Together For RPG

By Spencer . October 10, 2011 . 8:31pm

Keiji Inafune, Record Of Agarest War Director, Disgaea Artist Together For RPG Idea Factory is developing a new game in the Souls series (previous games include Spectral Souls and more recently Blazing Souls Accelate – pictured) and ex-Capcom lead Keiji Inafune is the producer.

Dengeki PlayStation revealed Overwhelming Game Infinite Souls this week, which is in development for PlayStation 3. Like other installments, this is said to be a RPG, but according to the vague description it sounds more like Disgaea. The game begins with players creating a character by picking a face, hairdo, and voice. In battle, you can do over one trillion points of damage using the triple counter stop system. There are tower attacks and infinite cooperation combos. Players can level their characters up indefinitely as well.

Kenta Sugano, known for his work on the Record of Agarest War series, is the game’s director. Character designers include Ryoji, Kei Nanameda, and Takehito Harada who Disgaea fans should be familiar with.

Idea Factory promises this a full blown RPG and will be a high quality title. A snippet from an interview with Inafune said all joking aside, he hopes Overwhelming Game Infinite Souls will sell a million copies.

This sounds like the setup of a joke…

You’ve gotta be kidding me, man…

  • http://twitter.com/#!/GuiltyRaioh ShinkaRaioh

    What should I say? I’m…overwhelmed~

  • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

I saw “Disgaea Artist” in the title, and it was already a instant buy.

The fact that this sounds like an over-the-top statistics-wise SRPG too helps.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Only way it can sell a mln is for overseas release, hopefully they aim for that pinnacle of accomplishment.

  • kroufonz

JRPG for PS3 = Very high probability for Western release + japanese voice in western version

how inafune has change! from man that talk and pushing hard for westernization, now become producer of jrpg with heavy anime artstyle!

    • PrinceHeir

i like how this person think :D

    • mikanko

Even though it sounds like this is a different Inafune, most of his talk about western game design being superior had more to do with logistics, and not content.

To read his criticisms, they seemed focused on too many Japanese game devs playing it safe to meet a quota.  He wished more were experimental or willing to try new things, and weren’t so easy to give in to the formula their seniors left them.  Then again he worked at Capcom, which is probably one of the older game developers in Japan. It’s likely a bit stickier than most when it comes to tradition, and questioning of upper management.

He also complained how they’d fallen behind western developers when it came to higher tech.  How it’s easier to outsource PS3/Xbox 360 development to western devs because fewer Japanese studios were venturing outside the dev costs they had in the PS2 era, and played it safe with games on Wii/PSP.

Not saying he’s right or anything, but in none of those criticisms was he saying Japanese art styles are inferior to western ones, or anything like that.

I’d chalk a lot of it up to the grass being greener on the other side, but I think he may have had some valid criticisms.

  • Draparde

Wow, so far i’m sold. or at least as sold as i can be based of the vague description

  • Darkrise

    He’s really overestimating huh.

Not that it’s bad but if they’re making an rpg that’s similar to Disgaea, wouldn’t it mean that it’ll sell just about as much as Disgaea unless the mechanics will differ to a large degree which would make or break the sales. Either way, I think sales would probably be around 100k at most.

    • Ladius

I imagine he was being autoironic, since he was rather famous for his lofty sales expectations during his time at Capcom :P

I think he’s the first to realize there’s no way in hell a Spectral game can sell even remotely like that, and I even have an hard time seeing it matching Disgaea’s results too, at least if this isn’t a reboot of sorts (it would be difficult to draw new players in the complex Neverland timeline) with better production values than all previous IF tactical jrpgs and decent marketing to booth (Inafune’s name will probably help a bit here).

  • Ladius

Wow, I would have never, ever dreamed to see a Spectral game (the Souls games were a subseries of the long-running NeverlandSpectral saga) produced by Keiji Inafune. I really like how he has no problem working with (perceived) underdogs, and he must have liked what he saw during his collaboration on Neptunia Mk2 if he’s sticking with IFCompile Heart even more.

If this is really in the Neverland continuity, I hope they try to flesh out the period between the end of Blazing Souls and Spectral Force Genesis, since I felt the time jump in Genesis a little too sudden. Then again, understanding the Neverland world is really troublesome for western players given the lack of localized games, and apparently IF didn’t push for Spectral Force Legacy’s localization (a shame, since it could have been a much-needed entry point for western players, especially considering how all the Spectral games localized so far are far in that world’s timeline and somewhat difficult to understand)… some fans thought that the series had been discontinued due to Agarest and Neptunia’s success, but apparently this isn’t the case anymore.

I’m a bit sad to see IF apparently abandoning their Dragon Force-style games in favor of less unique tactical jrpgs, but I’m also really curious about this collaboration, and I hope it can give IF some more recognition.

  • HarryHodd

So this is Inafunes PS3 RPG that was rumored a little while back it sounds like. Seems cool. Idea Factory is really growing this gen. Good that they have been one of the few devs developing for the PS3 all generation.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

His works always have something new or orginal!, but the only problem is that the game can get too hardcore at points, needs to be better executed. Still, i’ve liked the games, will be awesome

    • Ladius

Keep in mind he’s the producer, not the director. His presence will probably give this game a level of polish many IF game lacks, but I think the core gameplay and mechanics will be a mix of those that the IFCH fans have learned to appreciate playing Spectral Souls 1-2, Blazing Souls, Cross Edge or the Agarest games (since this game apparently has nothing to do with the Generation of ChaosSpectral Force grand strategy titles).

Considering they were already extremely meaty games, adding new contents, an emphasis on Disgaea-style power playing and some more refinement (I like many IF games, but let’s face it, they are among the worst in masking their lack of budget, and often this damages the rest of the game) I think we could have a really interesting game to look forward to.

Hmm now we’re gonna see a dirty version of Disgaea

jk can’t wait to see what amazing game comes out of this.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I hear he is writing AND singing the theme song. What does this mean? :)
EDIT: argh, an imposter! I was looking forward to it lol

It means he is finally losing his mind

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Oh, Keiji, Keiji, Keiji…….just when you couldn’t become a more interesting person, then you decided to produce this, which IMO, gives you 100 more points of me being interested of what you will do in the future. I totally did not expect this from you, Keiji. I’m looking forward to this game.

“Kenta Sugano, known for his work on the Record of Agarest War series, is the game’s director.”

I’m not feeling too good about this, hopefully Inafune can keep it on track

  • Guest

That’s a trainwreck of talent. Not excited at all. At least the character designs might be cool which means tons of X-rated fan art.

  • KotaroInugami

Somehow I feel Haradaya shines best by himself. Sharing the spotlight with various artists each with different styles somehow makes me think it wont look like anything original to either of the 3 artists. But I’ll of course wait to see more.

  • godmars

Not matter what comes of this, I’d ask why its taken so long into this gen to be seeing JRPGs on a more regular basis, but then I sort of know.

  • http://twitter.com/RefueledPants Jordan Slovsaki

I’m very interested. Love Disgaea and although Agarest isn’t exactly the best series out there I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. Anything that will get me out of the brown and grey warzone that is western gaming. I love gears and uncharted for shooters, but I’ve spent too many days(yes days in cover alone gears keeps track) hiding behind chest high walls.

  • Go2hell66

    sounds like overkill

  • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

    Color me excited.

    • hadjimurad

just admitting that i wanted to make a really bad joke along the lines of ‘and what color is that?’ AND every other time someone uses this expression.  i’m working with my healthcare providers to overcome this urge to make fun of this expression not only online, but in the less important ‘real life.’

  • http://twitter.com/willofsilver Silver Lion

Before anyone gets the wrong idea this is not ‘that’ Keiji Inafune, it’s just…a guy that names himself New Keiji Inafune, apparently because he respected Keiji Inafune.

So yeah, Inafune has nothing to do with this…

    Source: Hokanko

    • dusk

Take a look at this link below.
      http://andriasang.com/comyin/

Just in case you miss it, let me quote it for you.
Quote: “New Keiji Inafune — whom most are assuming is a new version of the same Keji Inafune who used to work at Capcom”

Now since your Hokanko source is in Japanese, I can’t really comment on it. But assuming that you can read Japanese just fine, I guess you’re right. But that also implies that every journalist who reported on this got it wrong. And I’m quite positive that even if some gaming news sites took their source from other gaming sites, at least one guy out of the many journalist must have translated the article from Japanese because he can read Japanese correctly.

So I’ll be waiting to see which one of you is correct.

      • malek86

        There is also this:

        http://andriasang.com/comyiv/

Well, that was annoying. But I guess it was to be expected, considering Inafune is working on that penguin game.

Still, it surely created a bit of confusion. And I’d like to know what this guy who calls himself “the new Inafune” has worked on in the past. A resume would be welcome.

    • Ladius

Maybe the whole “new Inafune” thing is just a joke to mark how different his post-Capcom games have been compared with his previous works. It’s not like he hasn’t agreed to use his face in Neptunia Mk2, and cooperating on an IF game would be far more normal than that (not to mention it won’t hinder his work on the new Comcept game, since he would be only the producer in IF’s new title).

It could even be Inafune trying to create a new persona for his works with IF and CH, since I really doubt there’s a nameless guy posing as “New Inafune” in Idea Factory, especially considering his role as producer calls for previous experiences. So yeah, joke or new alias, I think it’s same old Inafune trying to gather some attention :P

Let’s wait for more info, of course.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Oh I tought his name is Keiji Inafune just that he isn’t the one we know… I mean I doubt that no one else has that name?

    any yuri dating sim?

    • Crimson_Cloud

Hopefully one in the near future, no doubt. ;)

  • lordryo

Sounds awesome! I hope this gets localized!

  • malek86

I’m surprised to see it’s a PS3 game. The copyright on the teaser site listed G Crest, who is a mobile and browser games developer.

  • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

I got a feeling something is very wrong with the guy since his leave from capcom..

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Hmm. This actually could have some potential.

  • http://twitter.com/manasteel88 Mana

I was excited until Tower Attacks.  The one and only thing I loathe about the Disgaea series is that I don’t like throwing my warriors around the screen.

This should be interesting, Keiji has great talents in tightening game design and for a series paying homage to Disgaea, that’s needed.  I love Disgaea Team, but moderation is not their thing.

  • darkbartz

Whoa, Keiji Inafune (if it is the real one), Record of Agarest War and Disgaea, that sounds pretty awesome. Definitely interested in this game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ema-Rose/100000917800035 Ema Rose

    I`m interested…

  • SetzerGabbiani

Purchased if NIS, or Atlus decide to localize it.

    • Learii

NIS if i not wrong  but who know

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BSWWTWOYVAD3IWPLFMXTZH46TM sergio

    Looks interest.
At least a JRPG with NO come to a Handheld.
    I give it a praise!!

  • brian yep

“Like other installments, this is said to be a RPG, but according to the vague description it sounds more like Disgaea.”
Is Disgaea not an RPG series?

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

No, Disgaea is a … farm simulation!

  • theworldofnoboundries

Lol this should be interesting. We will see some girls shooting buster from her hand and some cool guys using sabers killing foes……….. Wait, what this Inafune is not that “Inafune”?? Damn this seems to be one crazily abnormal game mash into one then. Waiting for more info……”Shin Inafune” Wachaooo!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Could the article actually write that Keiji inafune isn’t that Keiji Inafune?
And also, he expects 1 Million Sales for a Niche JRPG?
I mean, did Disgaea or Record of Agarest Wars really sell that much?!

Somehow this new Keiji sounds more like a comedian than a gamedesigner, could it be that this is just a trollgame? ;)

  • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

Trillions of damage, infinitite combos, unlimited level-ups? That’s… really Overwhelming.

It sounds like they are trying to emulate Disgaea’s outrageous algorithms and blowing them even further. As fun as it sounds on paper, it’ll probably make the game even more grind-heavy. Level caps and the like exist to keep the challenge and mechanics under control. What use is any sort of strategy if you can just wipe the battlefield out of existence with a ridiculously overpowered special attack?

On another note, Inafune’s talent is being wasted at IF in my opinion. Their games have always been average at best – his skills alone are hardly going to change that.
