It’s The End Of The World, But In Fantasy Life You’re Just A Street Performer Or Chef

By Spencer . October 11, 2011 . 6:27pm

Fantasy Life, a role playing game from Level-5 and Mother 3 developer Brownie Brown, has an interesting premise. The world is panicked when a shadow passes over the moon, but instead of rushing out to save the planet you go about your everyday life. The theme of the Nintendo 3DS game is a living life in your own way RPG.

According to this week’s issue of Famitsu, Level-5 has at least 20 jobs for players to choose from. Pilot, carpenter, miner, chef, magician, lumberjack, scholar, merchant, fortune teller, blacksmith, soldier, hunter, postman, royal guard, alchemist, farmer, treasure hunter, tailor, fisherman, and street entertainer are possible occupations in Fantasy Life.

Fantasy Life is slated for release sometime in 2012.

Can’t wait until this is confirmed for states. I am already interested in living my last days before the world ends in a rpg…as long as I’m an adorable character in this game that is…

  • DanteJones

Hmm! This sounds pretty cool. :D

It’d be interesting if while you’re going about doing your everyday things, and as time goes on, you hear about “The Hero’s” exploits and see how the world changes from your point of view.

  • puchinri

Wow, that’s pretty snazzy. I like all the options there~.

  • Aoshi00

Not sure what kind of game this is.. kind of like Animal Crossing meets DQ.. so getting the Uematsu soundtrack, I just can’t get enough of his music :) BD, LO, Anata wo Yurusanai, Last Story, Sakura Note, they were all brilliant.. it’s a pity a main FF is not using his music anymore..

  • Chris Hansen

I will always be disappointed that they made this 3d instead of the originally planned 2d with Earthbound-ish spritework
I guess the 3DS is just too much pressure

    • Suicunesol

I don’t know, man… the Earthbound-ish spritework is charming, but it’s also somewhat unremarkable, especially when you consider the 2D work companies like Vanillaware are making. Brownie Brown’s 2D style is just not eye-catching in this day and age.

      • SirTeffy

I disagree. Looking at Mother 3, the style is INSTANTLY recognizable and the sprites so much more detailed and emotive than what you normally see in spritework. Vanillaware uses a different style and method (multipart sprites, hand-drawn and animated) and it looks COMPLETELY different. With either company their styles are instantly recognizable in today’s HD sprite world.

        • Suicunesol

Oh no, I didn’t say they weren’t recognizable. Brownie Brown’s style is very distinctive.

I guess this is just my own preference then. When I saw the first 2D screenshots for Fantasy Life, I didn’t exactly dislike it, but I thought to myself that it doesn’t look like the style has “evolved” much from when we first saw it. The style that works for Mother and its quirky atmosphere–does it also work for this game? I don’t know. I guess the fact that the graphics look the same as another game is what gave me a lackluster impression.

It sounds/looks like a more interesting Animal Crossing. I might just check this out, I still need more details though.

This game will be so, BUT SO, sexy, been waiting for it since it was annunced like trillions of years ago

  • http://twitter.com/furdworetzky Fur Dworetzky

This game sounds like a sandbox MMO conformed to a single player game. Might be interesting.

With a interesting premise sign me up!

    >Level 5

Yay! I have a 60% chance of this coming outside of Japan!

Hey remember – Level 5 set up their American branch (Level 5 Ia) JUST to localize more of their games for the western world. I’m sure they’re hoping to launch this kinda stuff in other countries than just Japan XD

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Well then I got a 95% chance xD.

      • Ladius

Yeah, I think this game really has a chance to be localized.

This looks extremely charming:) This kinda stuff is why I will always love Japanese games most. Next to Ninokuni, this also looks like the kinda thing you’d see in a charming animated film. Level 5 is on a roll.

I was just telling one of my friends the other day that it would be awesome to have a game where you get to step into the shoes of a tradesman or average joe in a fantasy world. This is pretty much that, except made by an amazing group of people.

I’d say that I was extremely excited, but unfortunately I don’t have a 3DS. :( It still sounds amazing though, and I hope it ends up being as good as it looks!

Probably one of the few 3DS games that I want. I really dig the idea, just doing jobs and things. C:

  • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

So cute. I love those character designs. :3 Even the graphics look pretty cute. I wasn’t expecting it to look as nice. The game still sounds really interesting. I’d imagine it will end up like Animal Crossing and become a massive timesink. And I’m okay with that. XD

I dunno why but the moment I saw this, a thought popped up in my head. “Level-5. The new Square-Enix.”

  • Suicunesol

It would make me very happy if this was like Harvest Moon x Dragon Quest x LoZ: Majora’s Mask.

  • takopako

    i need.

  • JustThisOne

Holy crap. This is the first time that I’ve had trouble telling the difference between 2D work and 3D work. When it pans out to the game title for the first time, with the airship in the sky, I totally thought it was 2D artwork. Everything looks so crisp, yet hand drawn. It’s crazy!

Anyway, I wonder how this will work out for the less significant job classes though? Maybe it’ll work out in an Atelier kind of way for some of the item creation type classes? Questing for materials, perhaps?

The only thing in this trailer that turns me off is its framerate
    …otherwise, LEVEL5 is truly BOSS

  • theworldofnoboundries

Level 5 = The best game company now.

With Ni no Kuni, Time Travelers and this. Not to forget that they almost localized all of their game here. Damn time to prepare wallet for the upcoming battle.

  • mikanko

Oh wow, this is so pretty.

Going to be really interesting to see how some of those jobs play.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

I like how the recommended game after the article is SpongeBob. XD I digress, this game looks interesting. I’d like to know how battles go down, though.

  • roboattack

Another game handeled by Brownie Brown. Looks like Level-5 will be using them for more 3DS titles in the future.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Fantasy Life was being made by them since it was originally for DS.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

This looks so charming, originally the game was to have Mother 3 graphics (also like the Layton London Life) but this looks great too.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

    looks cute

playing as the NPCs during an RPG story~

  • raikage

“instead of rushing out to save the planet you go about your everyday life.”
    sounds realistic (seriously)

  • Göran Isacson

    … Huh. NPC: The game?

Okay Brownie Brown- I’m listening. I hope they don’t wuss out and have the completely ordinary NPC turn out to be some world-saving hero anyway. Just give us a story about common people living common, yet interesting lives… maybe have the other towns-people talk about the mystical group of heroes running around saving the world. Maybe even have the heroes visit the town you’re living in, but a twist: you won’t even know it until the world is saved and the news of who did it spreads. You just thought that guy who bought a sword/meal/gave you a tip was some average Joe!

I think that could be really interesting. Really interesting indeed…

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

    so … localization?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ferofax Abdul Panganting

My Farmer will kick your Royal Guard ass any time of the week! gahahaha.

This will be so much fun. ^_^ I love Level-5, it always looks like Ghibli has rubbed itself off of Level-5 animations everywhere you look, from Inazuma Eleven, to Professor Layton, to the actual collaboration between them on Ninokuni. XDPure gaming heaven. :D
