PlayStation Vita May Not Play Nice With TurboGrafx-16 Games [Update]

By Spencer . October 13, 2011 . 5:00am

PlayStation Vita May Not Play Nice With TurboGrafx 16 Games [Update]PlayStation Vita is backwards compatible with downloadable PSP games. So, you can play Akiba’s Trip and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on it. Final Fantasy VII from the PsOne Classics section… eh maybe not.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan posted a PlayStation Vita FAQ and there is a big asterisk next to the part where it says the handheld is compatible with PSP software downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

It says support for Game Archives (aka PsOne Classics and TurboGrafx-16 games in Japan) are the exception. In other words, PlayStation Vita won’t be able to run Metal Gear Solid or Chrono Cross. Sony says they will release more information about this soon.

Update:

The US PlayStation Vita FAQ says PlayStation Vita will run PsOne Classics. (Thanks to everyone for pointing this out!) The Japanese FAQ states PlayStation Vita will run downloads from the PlayStation Store, however Game Archives, which consists of PsOne Classics and TurboGrafx-16 games, are not included in that statement. That’s… kind of strange since the US FAQ says PsOne Classics will run on Vita. Perhaps, the issue is with TurboGrafx-16 emulation? Sony released a few of these in North America and the PlayStation Vita FAQ in North America doesn’t mention these at all. Siliconera apologizes for the error and confusion.

Ridiculous. PS1 emulation should be very easy for something of that power level – not only that, but they already have the Xperia Play which runs PS1 games, and it uses an ARM+PowerVR architecture just like the PSV will.

    • tinder

I highly doubt it has to do with the hardware and more with the actual
emulation process. Sony has to probably re-optimize the games to support
      the PS Vita.

      • Gatchaman1

        hmm…

      • malek86

If the emulation is done on the Xperia, it could be easily done here too.

I rather believe that they are doing this to differentiate their portfolio. If the PSV could run archive games, people would have even less reasons to pick up an Xperia. Mind you, they don’t have much of a reason right now either. So who knows, I bet one day they’ll just discontinue the Xperia and give the PSV an update to run archive games. I have this gut feeling.

      • Kirbysuperstar2

Yup, probably a “not supported at launch, will be attended to in a firmware update” matter.

  • Zonic505

Well, that’s rather odd. I do hope they find a work around or something that makes it so we can, seeing as PSONE Classics is one of their biggest draws of PSN.

  • pgover

So I’ll be able to play Class of Heroes on my Vita but i won’t be able to play Crash Bandicoot… something is very wrong here.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

So Vita cannot even do full PSN support either, sucks for those who bought PS1 games for the PSP.  Can you play the PS1 games you intend to play on PSP with PS3 if this happens to you?

    • Gatchaman1

      uh yes

  • kariohki

Considering those are the main things I buy on PSN, that really sucks :/

  • Yamaneko22

Weird… I hope they somehow sort it out before Vitas release. Also hope that this have nothing to do with Sony wanting to charge for the same games again on Vita:P

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Well this is disappointing. Might have to keep my PSP.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Not shocked in the slightest. ~_~()

  • kenichi_san

As expected, have to keep my PSP then :)

  • http://photovoltaik.bandcamp.com/ Ujn Hunter

Someday… someone… will release the ultimate handheld… guess Vita is not it.

  • KotaroInugami

As much hardware as is in this thing, and they give up part of thier biggest market?I hope they have a really good reason for this. I’d hate for sony to pull the “We just can’t do it” then BING BANG BOOP “Vita 2, can now play PS1 games.” :/

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

Goddangit! I was really looking forward to CC on the VIta T~T

    • Enma_Kozato

      SAME

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Ok, lets be kind of realistic for a sec, is not like all portable consoles have to keep backwards compatibility, especially for home consoles (with other handled consoles is more understandable, but still), and the same with home consoles, the chain will get too long at some point, we already have the psp to play the psx games, and i dont really throw to the garbage an “old” console/handled when i get the new gen one.
I think is better this way, even if it hurts, the chain has to be cut at some point.

    • KotaroInugami

Id say this isn’t the point tho. People don’t want to carry around 2 handhelds, and its not like PSN has stopped placing even more PS1 classics on the network. This would be different if they didnt plan to continue PS1 classics.

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Think about it this way, they didnt really had to do psx compatibility on the PSP, is the first handled to have compatibility with a console game, so people didnt really expect that before its release or before they announced it could. And you can still play them on your ps3, or psp, or even in your psx, or laptop/computer if you have emulator.

And when i go out i dont really think i will play so many games in one day, with one handled is enough for a day, and the psv can still have many games, not just phisical ones but i can also play downloaded ones, more than enough, if i go on a trip i take both, its not like they are too giant for a bag.

        • KotaroInugami

Seems circumstantial then. I personally can live without PS1 altogether, but the way I see it for others is that they view PSV as the ultimate handheld which can do all the PSP can, and more. With that in mind PS1 on the go was actually useful and wanted by some people, so in that sense I can understand the disappointment. That’s just an assumption though. :P I’m nuetral.

      • Enma_Kozato

Pfft. I have my DS AND my PSP on me all the time, it doesn’t bother me at all.

        • puchinri

I was thinking maybe they meant two handhelds from the same company? Because now, you’d be carrying around a DS, PSP and PSV. And if you plan on getting one, a 3DS too.

Admittedly, I kind of wouldn’t mind, because my bags tend to have the room, but that would get annoying.

          • Enma_Kozato

Maybe? I’m not so sure either.
But- why would I carry around my DS if I had a 3DS? Anyway, if it ever came down to me owning those four handhelds I’d just look at them, decide which one I felt like playing, and put it in my bag. It’s no biggie for me.

    • SalomeHarras

The only reason why I’m replying to this is to let you know that I appreciate someone who is looking at this rationally.  It’s been 17 years since the PS1 was introduced people, and part of the cost of moving forward is jettisoning old technology that is no longer viable, this happens ALL THE TIME and it’s nothing new.

    • Ren

Does the PSN have Wild Arms 2?

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

        Yeah it’s there o.o

  • Go2hell66

now this is just dumb, is it really that hard for them to include ps1 compatability?

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Yet another low blow for me. Sorry guys, I really don’t like the way Sony is handling the Vita here and completely ignoring all the games that were released prior to it.

To each their own, some might be just fine with this, not me though. I’ll wait for some more official words on the matter though.

  • SolNeko

im confused how they couldnt fit this in :S because within a few weeks of the vitas release we’ll probably see some ps1 emulators from hackers, and if they can do it then surely sony can too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Adol-Christian/100002643492922 Adol Christian

I think the Game Archives refers to PC Engine games and/or other games. Game Archives not only includes PS1 but other titles such as Classic PC Engine games as well. Its probably that.

Game Archives is the Japanese name for the large library of
PlayStation games that’s available for PSP and PS3 download via PSN. It
usually also includes the smaller library of PC Engine/Turbo Grafx
games, although this is sometimes referred to as PC Engine Archives.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevi-Johnson-el/100001847029873 Kevi Johnson-el

eh not really that big of a deal not much reason I would want to play ps1 games on the vita anyway since the vita will have a bunch of games to keep me busy when Iam on the go,also I like playing my ps1 games on ps3 more so than on a handheld

  • Ladius

I can understand the lack of UMD games support on Vita due to the PSVita’s lack of UMD drive and impossibility to clearly associate a single UMD with a PSN account without letting people validate the same UMD on dozens of different accounts, but this is just lazy.

Not only PSP, but even Xperia is able to emulate PS1 classics, and removing this feature from PSV shows a disturbing lack of care regarding something Sony should be easily able to accomodate in order to make Vita smoothly succeed PSP’s PSN capabilities.

I hope they’re able to explain this when they release more information about this topic, or at least fix the issue firmware-wise after Vita’s release.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

So Vita really seems to be a new starting point for Sony. With all this lack of compatibility it sure isn’t a continuation of their handheld line. Kind of like their PS3 they figure the feature alone wasn’t that would make people buy their systems. Good luck to you all.

    • kupomogli

Until an update, the PS3 wasn’t compatible with PSX games for a long time.  While it sucks that the Vita doesn’t work with PSX and TG16 games, there may be some problems with them for right now that they’re trying to work out and they may or may not work in the future.

Besides.  It has backwards compatibility with all PSP games and PSN games that are playable on the PSP.

Does the DSi, XL, and 3DS have backwards compatibility of physical GBA games like the original DS and Lite?  Does the Wii U have Gamecube backwards compatibility?  Does the Wii U even upscale Wii games higher than 480p? The new Wii redesign also dumps not only backwards compatibility to Gamecube, but wifi as well.

      • Herok

wasnt the ps3 always able to play psx discs? Also why are asking questions about the WiiU already all the info we have now is rumors and speculation,so for all we know nintendo could have downloadable gamecube games day 1. in case of the 3ds, it  may not have a gba slot but your being kinda hypocritcal by questioning that since vita doesn’t have a umd slot and finally if we are being technical it cant play all psp games that are playable on psp my copy of BBS and FF:CC show this

  • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

I’ll wait to hear more details before I make any harsh comments, but if they really do end up removing support for PS1 Classics, it’s going to be seriously upsetting. :l

  • hush404

    ………… why?

  • kupomogli

I’ll admit that I’m sad that PSX titles right now aren’t working on the Vita, but when the PS3 was originally released, did it have PSX compatibility?  Nope.  That was a feature exclusively for the PSP.  It wasn’t until later that an update was done to make the games work on the PS3.  This same thing is more than likely to happen in the future.

Other than the game archives which can always be played on your PS3 or PSP until Vita does or doesn’t get them, every other game from the PSP PSN can be played on the Vita, so it has a large amount of backwards compatibility.  When doing emulation there is always something that might make the console not work properly, like the 360 which can’t emulate Taito Legends 2, the original 80GB PS3 which has some problems running certain games, etc.  The bc is a bonus and while it’s something I’m sure Sony is trying to get working fully on the Vita, it might be something that they’re unable to do or only currently.

    • SirTeffy

Got that backwards, chief. The PS3 had PSX BC at launch, while the PSP didn’t get it until version 3.0

      • kupomogli

I thought physical PSX games were bc, but the digital copies were PSP exclusive. I guess I was wrong. It’s been awhile.

Thanks for clearing that up for me though.

  • d19xx

Sorry but I don’t remember. Did the PSP supported PS1 games at launch or was it added via firmware update?

    • James Beatty

It was always built into the software but it couldn’t be accessed until later. People with hacked psp could access it earlier though

    • kupomogli

      That was the PS3.

  • http://twitter.com/Stereo_Future Brian P Dorn

Screw waiting for details, Im going to overreact right now. What—The—F#@k

    • PrinceHeir

seriously please don’t let this be true. i do not care if it doesn’t look good playing on it, i just want to play these classics on the go like PSP.

      don’t screw this up Sony.

  • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

I do hope they fix this– while I will be keeping my PSP, it’s also quickly going down the road of “broken”. (it keeps randomly acting like I pressed Home if I hold it a certain way, and sometimes it acts like I’m pressing a directional button constantly until I move the analog nub)

The Vita is going to be my outright replacement of my PSP, which is why I’m going to willingly rebuy certain games to put onto it from my UMD library, even before the discount plan was announced. Having to ignore my PS1 downloads too? Not cool. Part of the appeal of the PSP is being able to play that stuff on the go.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

DId they mention PSN games or not in that fact? I want to play Shatter.

I just realized I can finally play my downloaded Blade Dancer on the Vita.

  • http://twitter.com/Stuart444 Stuart444

    http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=2254

Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other
PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan
to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?

    A: Users
can play PSP titles, minis and PSone classics titles which are offered
on PS Store. We do no have any plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3
or PS2 titles at this point.

Sounds like someone mistranslated that since the above quote says otherwise.

    edit: Also: http://andriasang.com/comyk0/

The fate of your Game Archives collection is not so clear. The same response includes a footnote saying that Game Archives games are not included in the response. Details on Game Archives support will be announced later, the FAQ says.

    • thebanditking

Sony has already confirmed that PSOne titles sold on the store would be Vita compatible. In fact they have said so multiple times, so unless something drastic changed, this is either a mistranslation or a typo on the Japanese web page.

      • http://twitter.com/Zufield Zufield

        Most likely a mistranslation.

But then again, as mentioned above, Game Archives also covers stuff like Hudson’s PC Engine titles, SNK’s Neo Geo titles, and whatnot. The “other stuff” is probably what the article’s really referring to.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Eliot.Lienthal Eric Gornicki

C’mon Sony, you were doing everything looks great about the PSvita and the UMD compatibility…and now THIS? Why don’t include the PSone classics too? WHY?

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

If they decide to forgo PS1 compatibility but instead added PS2 compatibility, I’ll take that as a more-than-fair tradeoff

Edit: Okay, they still have PS1 compatibility. Nice. Now give us PS2, please.

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

In addition to pissing everyone off, this is just an open-invitation for hackers to add features you don’t.  And you of course know what that actually leads to.  GG Sony.

After all of the awesome things Vita can do you take a GIANT step back.  Why would you hamstring your digital catalog like that.

Of course, that is assuming this is all true.  I hope this is just a misunderstanding.

  • http://twitter.com/Keytotruth Keytotruth

This is a mistranslation. The FAQ just says that the only PSP games compatible with the PSVita are the ones in the PS Store, nothing else. Please fix this.

  • BGMcDF

Way to kill my hype, Sony.

I never not want to have Zidane and Vivi in my pocket, you bastards!

  • http://gomorning.com shidoshi

The Japanese on that page is simply saying that non-PSP game archives games aren’t part of that FAQ answer, and their playability will be discussed at a later date. (I believe it was mentioned that a handful of PSOne titles wouldn’t be playable on the PS Vita, so maybe they want to confirm that.)

Nowhere in that statement does it say that PSOne titles won’t be playable on the PS Vita. Anybody getting worried about the mistranslation posted in the story shouldn’t be.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_427ISE65UQ4DG6EWLW3W2P5ERY Darrell

This article should be updated or removed.
    It was a mistranslation.
As others have said, Sony has already confirmed psone classics for Vita.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

…….Soooooo, this is wrong? Oh, silly Spencer. :3

    • Kitestwinblades

Sweet! All is right in the world then!

I saw this article earlier but only read half-way(walking away in shame
as i may never have Chrono Cross on the go via Vita). Coming back to
this is great new indeed XD Thanks for the update!

  • NaruKami

Thank you comments, for telling me this was a mistranslation! I was kinda scarePr

  • Lion’s Paw

What I want to know is how game ratings work in relation to new devices being compatible with existing systems.

For example the PS One game Syphon Filter has been rated by the ESRB for PS1/PS3/PSP/PlayStation Certified Device (Xperia) in a single entry. But Syphon Filter 2 has separate entries for PS1 and PS3/PSP. I somehow doubt they changed the game’s content for the emulated version.

Do PS1 and PSP games need to be rated again for Vita? And is it just ESRB that is so picky or other region’s rating boards too? Because even if the Vita is capable of playing those games rating boards could be holding it back in some regions.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leon-Hart/100002316814779 Leon Hart

in that case i will keep my psp since i was planning to sell it but err never mind ^ ^

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

I’ll just keep PSPgo. Not really a big deal to me. Has many other games to enjoy, plus the rerelease of the UMD games.

EDIT: Posted before finding out whether this was a mistranslation or not.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J24UY7QAEKQY576PHZYS3EN6BA Celine

I’ll survive. I think I’ll just keep my old PSP for the physical UMDs and Classics.

  • Yuri Huitron Alvarado

Fail ? or just needs a fix?

  • danhese

BS, Sony has already confirmed that Vita will play PSP ,PS Mini, PS Suit and PS1 Classics months ago.

  • skymap

    Edit: Oh mistranslation?

wow that sucks… i was planning on going official (ahem*) if vita has backward compatibility with psx games. well looks like i wont be selling my psp anytime soon.
