How Chocobo Racing Works In Final Fantasy XIII 2

Chocobo racing is one of the mini-games you can play at Xanadu, the floating casino in Final Fantasy XIII-2. If you played Final Fantasy VII you have a good idea what to expect. It’s similar, but without gold chocobo breeding. First you have to pick a chocobo and race. Square Enix created five race tiers with different types of items to win, but you need to move up the ranks first. There are also secret races you can enter after clearing specific conditions.

 

You’re going to need a good chocobo to get that far and these feathered stallions have four different parameters to pay attention to. Speed measures how fast your chocobo can and your bird performs over short distances. Stamina determines how long your chocobo can last in a race and its performance for long distance running. RP or race points are used up each time you enter a race. Skills vary from chocobo to chocobo, but these abilities can give your racer an edge.

Before a race starts you can give your chocobo items and choose its position like leading the pack or staying in the middle. When the race begins you can press a button to make your chocobo dash out of the gates. In the middle of a race, you can press a button to make your chocobo dash. This makes your chocobo run faster, but drains the boost gauge.

 

The casino also has slot machines to play where you can win up to 50,000 coins if you’re lucky. Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out in North America on January 31, 2012.

    Any information on whether the color of the Chocobo alters/determines its abilities? That’s pretty much a FF staple, I would be surprised if it didn’t to some extent (IE white chocobos restore MP in IV, black can fly in V and so on).

    I was so sad in FFVII where the green was my favorite choice but I had to breed it out to gold for the best results.  Hopefully I can use Green (if there is one? I do see blue up there) this time.

    Am I the only one who thinks that the dreadlocks that channel Bob Marley and Whoopi Goldberg the Chocobos are donning are ridiculous looking?

    this doesnt seem like chocobo racing, its more like when you used to bet on them on ff7 but u can give them boosts. :( i want super awesome colourful race tracks and controllable chocobos

    I assume it will be somewhat balanced then if youre not breeding them? No more flashing chocobos with infinite stamina that can dash through the entire course? Hopefully one of the secret races is a re-imagining of the ff7 course complete with crazy waterfalls pyramids and jaunts through outerspace. Probably too much to ask though.

    I’d like to race across Sulyya Springs with a River Chocobo. At the very least, they could throw in some tracks that require specific types of Chocobos.

    As long as it’s better than the F9000 league of chocobo racing, it’ll be good.

    Also I like how Firefox wants to auto-correct “chocobo” to “chocoholic”.

    I wish the casino had dice games, the dice game in Golden Sun The Lost Age was so addicting, I remember just booting the game to play it sometimes. But anyway, I dont know if I will do this Chocobo Racing, hopefully there wont be a trophy/achievement for it…

      Sad to say this, but a trophy should be expected. Just hope it is only a bronze/low point achievement.

    I hope the Casino has a save point nearby, so I can keep reseting and reloading the game only to get the big prizes, like I always do in Dragon Quest VIII.

    So… it’s not like FF7′s chocobo races? That’s a bit disappointing.

    So long as it’s fun in its own right I won’t mind, but Squenix should know that that’s the standard that they’re measured against every time they mention chocobo racing lol.
