Dante Pulls DmC Devil May Cry’s Devil Trigger

By Spencer . November 2, 2011 . 1:26am

The devil trigger move in DmC Devil May Cry works a bit different than other Devil May Cry games. Instead of turning into a demon, Dante turns into our Dante and freezes time. Remember, DmC Devil May Cry takes place in a parallel world, so the half-angel and half-demon Dante is a different character.

dont care what anyone says. this game looks legit. i’m hooked on gameplay. give me a good story to go with this dante and i’m even better.

    • heartless141

it’s a solid game, but people don’t want it to be compared to DMC3, which is pretty much the greatest action game ever created, even compared to all the games right now.

i said it many time already, a simple name change will solve all of these.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

Will a simple name change solve the fact that you haven’t played the game and are unqualified to say things like ‘this game is not as good as DMC3′?

I don’t know why people are so quick to jump the gun and assume that something they haven’t even tried is terrible

        • badmoogle

So you say that the only way to judge a game is only after paying full price and play it?
If that was the case then any kind of product out there would have been a success regardless of its quality.Which is kinda scary if you think about it.

Luckily people have this thing called perception which is based on their own previous experiences with similar products which lets them know before hand whether they will like something or not.We live in the age of information, people have seen presentation and gameplay videos so they certainly have the ability to judge whether this game is for them or not.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

Is it so much to ask to have an open mind, at least?  Approach the game with cautious optimism in the hopes that yes, the game will be as enjoyable as the older entries in the series (hell, maybe even more so.  Who knows, honestly?)?  I mean, maybe you’re not old enough to remember the conniption the collective gaming world threw back when it was announced that Metroid was coming back after years of dormancy, but as an FPS.  I assure you it was MUCH worse and much more vocal than anything I’ve heard said about DmC so far, but it all worked out in the end because Metroid Prime was one of the most polished and well-received games of all time.  I’m not saying that DmC will be anywhere near the caliber of that game, but I’m saying there’s definitely room to be pleasantly surprised by the new direction a series takes, if only you’d allow it.

          • badmoogle

From what i’ve seen (at least from the vast majority of members here) and judging by their gaming tastes,i can assure you that Siliconera members are very open minded.

But there’s a difference from being open minded and being a consumer “whore” who has no personal preferences and standards and likes to consume blindly  everything the marketing department sharks feeds them.
With the information that is available today everyone who values his money should be able to know exactly whether he would like a product or not and this should happen before spending even a single penny for it.

Also when a product is around for no less than a decade people expect certain things from it.If they notice that whatever elements they enjoyed from previous versions of that product have been removed then they have all the right in the world to feel displeased about it and act accordingly.
That’s not to say that people don’t like change. But change should be made with subtlety and respect when it comes to products with a certain history. It should also be made within certain boundaries otherwise,if you exceed those boundaries,i think it’s quite unethical to continue keeping the same name of the product just for brand recognition’s sake.

        • heartless141

oh hello there, did i ever said this game is inferior to DMC3?
nope, can’t see a word about it. and is DMC3 one of the best Hack and Slash game ever? yes. it is, the majority who played it will confirm that for ya.
and solid mean it looks good enough to buy, it doesn’t look bad. not even close to your “Terrible”

would love it if the antifanboy people stop making this game sound like it’s gonna be the next Final fantasy just because some people hate it for some unjustified reason.

      • shion16

Can we compare it with DMC 4 then??
DMC4 is a poor ripoff of dmc3 battle system with a bad plot.

And now theyre trying to make a new version of the battle system and a good plot , but fanboys think this is bad?

RE4 wasnt like RE3 and nobody died during progress

        • kroufonz

less than 30 fps combat with lots of slow-mo crap never going to be better than 60fps fast silky smooth combat, no matter how new the battle system will be.

        • heartless141

well dmc 4 got compared enough to DMC3 back in the day, i say we give it a break. and if you think i’m a fanboy, scroll downlow for my comment.

no matter how you say it, a DmC, DMC or whatever, with a Dante and a broadsword, it WILL get compared to DMC3, no matter what’s the justice behind it.

      • Guest

How do you know it’s a solid game when you haven’t even played? Just wondering, seeing videos is way different than actually playing the game.

      • Christian Wright

i think it’s fine without a name change. the name dmc alone makes me feel no connection to the original series. kinda like what wario games are to the mario franchise

    • Ben Tan

The music was good, the backgrounds are gorgeous and the voice seemed a little bit off but all in all it seems that is going to be above-average.

And oh yeah, inb4 reaping Bayonetta off.

  • http://twitter.com/RefueledPants Jordan Slovsaki

I just can’t like this game. Can’t do it. I absolutely cannot stand how he looks and his voice is terrible, the music was awful, and the dialogue (ending with you don’t f with a god? Really?) I mean the whole thing was just tasteless. Not a hint of class. That’s what the old Dante had. This looks like its being made for emo teenagers.

    • badmoogle

I agree.I think this whole game is directed very badly with the overused “slo-mo ” sequences and is full of cliches.
Art direction also looks all over the place to the point it becomes borderline kitsch.

But who knows, maybe it’s just me and there are people out there who actually like this style.

  • theoriginaled

Lovin the stage deconstruction thing goin on there. Still alot of poor design decisions (dante).

  • planetofthemage

I heard you like Dante so I put a Dante in your Dante.

    Danteception.

    • DanteJones

      You raaaaaang? :D

    • AoNoise

      You, good sir, win everything

  • http://twitter.com/lvlln lvlln

Oh wow, I hadn’t heard the music in this game before, and it is absolutely horrific. I didn’t care much about the change in Dante’s design, but the music actually helps to set the mood while playing the game, and this Linkin Park-ish emo crap is downright unbearable. Gonna have to use custom soundtrack for the first time in a DMC game. That is, if I pick it up once it’s in the bargain bin.

  • Juuu

I must admit, the environments look VERY good. If they’re billing them and how they change as a big part of the game, fine with me. Carnival level looks appropriately creepy.

  • http://otoboku.se manga

So. Let me get this straight.

At first we were told DMC was a reboot of the classic Devil May Cry series.

Then a couple of days ago we were told that DMC was in a parallell universe from the other Devil May Cry games.

And now this video comes along with you Siliconera telling us that in fact when we use the devil trigger enemies freeze in place and we are suddenly transformed into the other Dante from the Devil May Cry series?

The more I get to know about this title the more reluctant I become to getting it. Ninja Theory doesn´t seem to have any freaking idea on how to make it into a game. They change to many things around all the time.

And what is up with the zooming in when you do a finishing move to give extra detail to how the enemy dies? Give me to many of those and I will hate Ninja Theory for the rest of my life since they have destroyed a good name in the gaming universe.

  • NTyron52

For some reason, the thing I like the most about this game is the enviroment. it looks quite unique and varied, because of the places we’ve seen already in this game.

The gameplay, while looking slower paced comparing to the previous DMC games, looks quite interesting and is refreshing. It looks like the gameplay has a different feel to it, so I’m actually interested on how it turns out to be.

I know that this may sound silly… but I’d like to see a color of this Dante in UMvC3… there, I said it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1051780171 Tan Wei Lun

Really hope the whole slow-down-zoom-in killing blow is just for the sake of faux awesomeness in a promotional video. Isn’t the point of any Devil May Cry game to have really fast-paced action and to NOT slow down?

Frankly the reason why I loved the original Dante is because he’s this suave don’t-give-an-eff type of guy. This guy looks like a smug bastard.

  • Göran Isacson

To start off with: this game has been an alternate universe since… hell, since like three or so weeks after it was first announced? They said it outright in one of the press releases, I have NO idea where everyone’s confusion is coming from with all this “prequel or reboot” stuff. It’s been an Alternate Universe pretty much from the get-go.

Now then- this here trailer. Demons are everywhere and apparently sending out subliminal propaganda to keep humanity in line. On the one hand I think the messages they sent out where super-cheesy and on-the-nose-preachy: we get it, Dante is against the establishment and fighting the man! ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER etc. But on the other hand this could make the games story that much more involving, seeing as his struggle isn’t just about going to some distant castle to fight a couple of demons, he’s pretty much against the WHOLE WORLD here… but in the worst case scenario, it can end up being a really preachy mess of rebellious platitudes that just makes me groan and roll my eyes, but not in the fun way that previous Devil May Cry games made me.

Now, I’ve played Heavenly Sword and Enslaved. Both games had interesting stories, even if Nariko makes me somewhat doubtful of NT’s ability to write an interesting “angry and rebellious” character. Nariko was so flat, from beginning to end- only interesting character there was Kai and Bohan. Monkey, Trip and Pigsy were better in Enslaved, so I hope they have continued to polish their writing here.

I’m on the fence here, because while I DO see the potential in this take on Dante so much else of the released material (trailers, official artwork, etc) seems to indicate they have turned Dante into a total prat who’s going to use his angsty backstory as justification for being a total douche-wad who takes himself WAY too seriously and has no fun because he’s to EXTREEEME and AGAINST THE MAN to have fun. Whether the game itself is fun to play, I have no idea and won’t be able to tell until I’ve got it in my hands. But I love Dante for the same reason I love Bayonetta: they have fantastic powers and tons of style, and are constantly living it large and over the top. Mellow them down and make them all mopey and grungey in an attempt to make them more “realistic” and all you get are dull protagonists with cookie-cutter Heroes Journey arcs that I’ve seen a million times before.

TL;DR- don’t forget fun, Ninja Theory. Please don’t forget fun.

Also- if Devil Trigger slows down time, does anyone know what Angel Trigger does yet? Is THAT perhaps his transformation power now?

    • WizardoftheBlueOrder

This interview disagrees with your first paragraph:
      http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-22-dmc-devil-may-cry-interview

One year ago, they were saying: “Same Dante, retelling of his origin story.” And then every interview afterward, they kept flipping around between AU, prequel and retcon. Fact is, we didn’t know if it was going to end up AU, and the constantly changing story didn’t help.

So this should explain where everyone’s confusion comes from: Inconsistent developer interviews.

      • Göran Isacson

Huh. First time I’ve seen this interview, actually. I think that after the first trailer went up, or if it could be the second, I recall a web-page stating that the game, based on some kind of word from some official creator, said it was an AU. I guess that I haven’t been keeping as good a track of this game as I thought, if there really have been that many different statements. All I know is the first thing I heard about it was that it was an AU, and then I… possibly just stopped listening.

But still- thanks for the information, that does clear a lot of things up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thahli Brenthahlimuele Lamarr Hardy

if you know so much.  whats that song playing in this trailer.

      • Göran Isacson

Alas, can’t say I’ve heard it before. Devil’s May Cry is repeated so I’m guessing that’s the name of it, but it doesn’t sound like the dude who made the theme song for DMC3 and DMC4- it’s way too little growling in order to be him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

This trailer shows nothing new to us.

  • Gaara D.Dragon

Twilight God of War. That simple.

Asura’s Wrath, DMC collection, Ninja Gaiden 3 and even
    lollipop
chainsaw, all are coming out next year, so why do we still care about this ?!

    • Mecha_the_Hedgehog

Don’t forget Darksiders 2 there seems to be allot of heavy competition when it comes to this genre and compared to this it looks pretty generic and weak in comparison and I dont think it can measure up. the reason people care is due to the DMC name if it was an original IP I dont think many would give this a second glance.

    • kroufonz

      and maybe bayonetta 2!

I’m glad this Tameem self insert bullcrap is in an alternate universe

  • super spoon

This is Capcom and Ninja Theory’s excuse as to why this lame ass heroine/meth-head/crackhead Dante is the way he is.

I’d rather wait for a real Devil May Cry game. This DmC game can go to hell.

meh, to much slow motion in attack:P

  • http://twitter.com/twiitterhype89 Nathan Webley

im genuinely excited for this game! i wonder if the devil/angel weapons have any significant impact on the overall story. the character design doesn’t bother me if it still has great gameplay i will be happy! the graphics look great too! definitely know im going to enjoy this game it was a good decision to make the change. no trolling either lol

  • Solomon_Kano

I love the way they went about doing the game’s world. It’s pretty interesting. That aside, the gameplay still doesn’t look fast enough but I guess that’s just not going to change. I also believe this was the first time we’ve heard Other Dante’s (that’s what I’m gonna call him from now on) voice. Sounds fitting, I guess.

Still wish they’d give us some idea of this game’s story. I’d like to know what the hell, pun not intended, it’s about. In the absence of amazing gameplay, a good story will suffice (unless the gameplay is downright AWFUL), so it’d be nice to start hearing something about that. Is he fighting demons for fun? Is he crazy? Is it similar to Dante’s reason? I need something.

  • IB2004

Are they just slowly changing the protagonist to regular dante?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

You’d have to be a moron to look at that trailer and not be excited for this:) I mean, who gives a sh** if Dante looks different when he’s still the same character, and the rest of the game looks so awesome. That transforming city, those monster designs, the weapon-changing stuff – all of it looks so cool. And just enough fresh stuff to make this DmC sequel feel new, but still true to the series. Not to mention, Ninja Theory’s track record is spotless. This is going to be one of the best games of 2012. I hope all the whiners are happy that this isn’t “their” Dante now.

Oh, and this Dante’s voice is slick:) It helps to offset the fact that he looked kinda drugged out and malnourished initially. He doesn’t sound like a strung out wastoid, y’know?

    • Guest

They already said this is not the same Dante. The game looks quite generic, the monsters so far look like rejects from a Tool video. BTW, this is also not a sequel either. It’s a spin-off, NT already said it, just clearing that for you.

  • DRocks94

Good graphics, gamelay seems solid but way more like Enslaved then DMC, where it kinda slows down after every hit. And with all these cool action adventure games coming out this is just gonna flop saleswise.
