Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die Had Many, Many Different Titles

A Famitsu interview with director Kotaro Uchikoshi reveals many interesting details about the upcoming Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die, slated for release on Feb 12 for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The game is stuffed chock full of puzzles, Uchikoshi says. Sometimes, solving these may unlock hidden aspects of a room. For example, if you solve puzzle A, and then B and C, the room’s appearance may suddenly change completely, and you might find a surprise waiting for you. However, beginners need not be daunted; if you challenge and fail a puzzle too many times, your companions will drop hints (and the clear, precise way to solve the puzzle). If you don’t want to use this option, just play the game on Hard mode. In addition, beating the game on Hard nets you a nice prize.

As a whole, the “game” (meaning, the game within Extreme Escape Adventure) is called the Nonary Game: Ambidex Version. This is because you approach colored doors, undergo the Ambidex (AB) game, and open the door labeled “9” to escape. The AB game — the game of cooperation and betrayal — is a game in and of itself contained within the Nonary Game: AB Version. The AB game plays in rounds until someone can open the “9” door.

Speaking of the Nonary Game, Extreme Escape Adventure shares the same world as 999, but but the story is self-contained. There are some references to the previous game, though, so it’s best to play 999 first. Some of these precise connections are mentioned in our previous coverage (spoilers abound).

How does the AB game work? It’s explained here in this article, but here it is again. Each player in the game has a bangle attached to them, with BP, which presumably stands for bangle (or bracelet) points. Like in 999, you travel in pairs, and can cooperate with or betray your partner.

AB rooms have a voting machine set up within them, and each pair of participants must make a choice within a time limit. Do you “cooperate” or “betray”? Each choice you choose unlocks a different scenario and, depending on different situations, you’ll see different stories unfold. The key is to get more than 9BP so you can open the door to escape. On the other hand, if your points fall below 0, you’ll get injected with poison from your bangle and die.

The different combinations like this: (The point changes affect both players.)

- If you choose to cooperate and the opponent chooses to cooperate, +2BP.
- If you choose to cooperate and the opponent chooses to betray, -2BP.
- If you choose to betray and the opponent chooses to cooperate, +3BP.
- If you choose to betray and the opponent chooses to betray, -0BP.

What is a possible dilemma? Uchikoshi gives the following example:

“What if both players have only 1 BP left? The opponent would invite you to cooperate with him and then both of you would get 2BP. Should you cooperate, trusting those words? However, if the opponent chooses to betray you, then your BP will go “1 – 2 = -1” and you’d die. Then, would the safe route be to betray? But if you do that and the opponent really was planning to cooperate, then his BP will go “1 – 2 = -1” and you’ll end up killing that person.”

Uchikoshi also dropped some trivia about the game’s title. Originally, there were three names that made it to the final cut: Uragiri x Girigiri [Betrayal x Just Barely], Want to be Saved? Then Die, and Good People Die. In the end, the proponents of each wouldn’t give in, so ultimately, the title was chosen using rock-paper-scissors.

Some other names that were dropped included “Sigma Control,” “Lost Escape,” “Contagious Distrust,” “Escargo,” “Human-mode Killer,” “Nine Mice Bite the Cat,” and “Sigma and Phi and Tenmyouji and Quark and Alice and Yotsuba and Dio and Luna and K are All Trapped in Weird Place! Oh No!” There were apparently many, many more that aren’t mentioned.

The final chosen name in Japanese, Zennin Shibou Desu, also contains a pun. “Shibou” can mean “to hope,” which would transform the meaning behind the original title into “We hope for everyone to become a good person.”

It’s amazing these games sell at all with their title. 9 Hours 9 Doors and 9 Persons is too damn long, and if you shorten it to 999 it’s impossible to find anything about if you Google it.

They have a cool sounding title for the game: Nonary Game.  Why not just call it that?  They are actively trying to use a stupid title. The name “Extreme Escape Adventure” has budget title written all over it.

I say this only because I love and I want it to succeed.  999 changed my life.  I’m obsessed with morphic fields because of it.

    • Suicunesol

Sorry, I think 9 Hours 9 Doors and 9 Persons is a very cool name that easily describes what is in the game yet begs buyers to find out more. On the other hand, what the heck is a Nonary Game?

Maybe the game succeeded because it had a name like that. I recall the Japanese having a fascination with long titles.

But in that case I have trouble remembering the ordering of the list. (hours, doors, persons). I do agree that maybe we could get better titles to help these games get noticed – but I have no idea what a better title would be.

Anyway, Aksys, please bring us this game, whatever it takes!

I memorized it like this: 9 HPD (where HP reminds me of life bar in RPGs and D is the only one left :P). Then it’s simple (at least for me) to remember the name is 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. :P

I’ve had some trouble finding the name of games, anime and manga, not because the name is too long, it’s just an ordinary English word. Like I was trying to find the game called of “Hello,good-bye”
… Thank god there was a visual novel database (although I didn’t know it was an eroge or a visual novel)
Anyways it was because of this song lol

“Sigma and Phi and Tenmyouji and Quark and Alice and Yotsuba and Dio and Luna and K are All Trapped in Weird Place! Oh No!”

    Best name ever

  • Gatchaman1

    Lost Escape

  • Hours

I need this game so badly. Aksys, please make our dreams come true.

    Also, “Escargo”??? I don’t even.

    • http://terracannon876.livejournal.com Laura

I could only surmise it was some sort of pun with “escape” and “cargo”…  I doubt it was actually referring to the snail dish… I hope.  At least the other titles were logically connected to the game XD

  • http://www.aksysgames.com/ Akselziys

I love all the possible titles XD Also, great info :D!

you like “Sigma and Phi and Tenmyouji and Quark and Alice and Yotsuba and Dio and Luna and K are All Trapped in Weird Place! Oh No!” too?  I thought I was the only one.

Oh shi-  we need a bigger game case.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

“Nine Mice Bite the Cat” seems pretty cool, as it goes with the “9″ motive and reminds people of 999.

I do think they picked the right title in the end, “Good People Die” hooks you into the madness.

    • Joanna

Well this is only for the Japanese title and if I recall correctly, it was called Extreme Escape there too (so for Japanese players the reference to the DS game is there). 999 is our localized name, so I’m sure if we get it, we will get it as 999: Good People Die.

  • Solomon_Kano

No matter what they called it, I still would’ve been interested. Heard nothing but good about 999, so I’m itching to play this.

    • Joanna

If you get a chance, I really recommend 999 too, especially if you enjoy text adventures/visual novels. It’s definitely one of my favourite games. :3

      • Solomon_Kano

I really want to play it but, unfortunately, I am no longer in possession of a DS. I’ll keep an eye out for it when I get a 3DS though.

        • Joanna

          Ah, that makes sense. Don’t mind me, 999 is just one of those games I try to get others to try, sometimes even to obnoxious levels. ^^;;;;

          • Solomon_Kano

It’s cool. I need every reminder that I can get not to forget about that game lol.

  • Dianatos

    Y-Y-Yostuba….Holy crap

      liking Clover, huh? :D

  • http://orangtunes.blogspot.com BIG MAC

This is going to be amazing.

  • darkbartz

Holy cow, this looks like it will succeed 999 very well, with the way they are describing Extreme Escape Adventure. I also love the last  alternate title they revealed, “Sigma and Phi and Tenmyouji and Quark and Alice and Yotsuba and Dio and Luna and K are All Trapped in Weird Place! Oh No!”. The “Oh No!” just makes the title for me.

    • dusk

I would have suggested, “Clover is Trapped in a Weird Place with 8 Other People! Again! For the Third Time! …Oh YES!”

The ellipsis indicates a certain amount of hesitation, because the player doesn’t know whether to cheer or lament the overuse of Clover. Three seconds later, players across the planet make their decision and cries out their answer in unison.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ferofax Abdul Panganting

anyways, the game mechanics remind me of the jdrama Liar Game, which revolves a lot on the same principles– do we trust or do we betray?

    • dusk

Also the fact that there’s a good person with an ideal goal among all the cut-throat people with realistic goals in the game (I’m assuming that there’s at least one good person who strives for a no casualty escape in this new 999 sequel).

Awaiting live-action drama series and movie tie-in. Directors of Liar Game, you know you want to.

  • Barrylocke89

I kinda lol at the fact that Rock Paper Scissors ultimately decided the name of a videogame.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Maaan, i hope that somehow aksys is already working on this xD

  • theworldofnoboundries

This is coming for both 3DS and Vita?

Seeing the graphics on the picture, i can said that is 3DS quality but if it is ported to Vita won’t they need to change the whole graphics in a whole again seeing 3DS graphics is lacking a bit compare to Vita.

    • Barrylocke89

Well there’s nothing that says that Vita games HAVE to have premium graphics. It’d be best if it looked the best that it could, but it wouldn’t be the first time that developers scrimp on how a port looks if that’s what it comes down to.

      • theworldofnoboundries

Thats why i ask lol. As if there are no different at all even on graphics or story, gamer will only choose which one is cheaper one as there are nothing to differenciate.

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

After reading those alternate titles I now have the urge to start a hardcore jazz orchestra and have albums named after each one.

  • brian yep

Is its japanese name actually a pun?
It seems like a semi-obvious subliminal message to me.
