Final Fantasy XIII 2 Reads Your Final Fantasy XIII Save Data

When Final Fantasy XIII-2 begins the game summarizes the events from Final Fantasy XIII to get newcomers up to speed. What if you played Final Fantasy XIII and still have save data? You can’t import your save data it into Final Fantasy XIII-2, but Square Enix has a bonus for fans that played the first game. During a hands-on session, Impress Watch reports the sequel will show players digest scenes with different characters narrating.

Impress Watch also explains how the equipment system works. Each character has four different slots to equip items and a maximum load they can carry. You can split these points up any way you like for defensive gear or stat boosting accessories, but can’t exceed the limit. Monsters have decorative items that change how they look in battle. Players can by weapons, armor, items, and monster training goods from Chocolina, a merchant who has the ability to travel through time too. Monsters can grow by purchasing items. Noel and Serah use the Crystarium system, but there is only one path. Players decide which roles to upgrade as they move along the grid.

Impress Watch also commented on the differences between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. In their opinion, there is almost no difference and 90% of the scenes use real time rendering instead of pre-rendered video. Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out on December 15 in Japan and January 31, 2012 in North America.

I have the save data from the previous gamee , I hope the bonus will be good one and worth it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

I hope it’s tasty, so I can digest it easily.

    • Zonic505

Agreed. I was hoping they were going to say what it was, but guess we’ll have to wait longer to find out what it is.

  • Go2hell66

That sux i played the original on Xbox now i’m using a ps3…

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

:D I have save file from both system.

  • http://twitter.com/atmey Atmey

I really hope it is much less linear than FFXIII.

    • http://twitter.com/keithmaxx keithmaxx

Oh it’ll still be linear, alright; you’re just going to be jumping through temporal points this time, making an illusion of chronologically “branching” story developments. (And that’s the first time I’ve used so many time-related jargon in a sentence. Whew!)

      • dusk

So it will be wibbly wobbly timey wimey?

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

A like for Doctor Who reference.

    • theoriginaled

ALL rpgs are linear its just how well they hide it that matters.

      • neo_firenze

Some RPGs are a heck of a lot more linear than others.  Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t have enough experience with the SaGa series, just to use another S-E example (not to mention stuff like a lot of western RPGs like Oblivion).

XIII really was exceptionally linear for the first 2/3 of the game, to a much greater degree than most RPGs.  It really was little more than walking in a straight line punctuated by battles and cutscenes for hours with very little in the way of exploration or anything other than progressing the main plot.  Doesn’t mean that’s necessarily bad, but certainly not for everyone.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Yeah, because FFX wasn’t linear. Every FF was linear, my friend. Go play WRPGs if you want open world sandboxes without story.

      • Solomon_Kano

What does X have to do with him wanting this particular FF to be less linear than the previous game? Every FF has been linear, yea, but not to the same degree… so why even say that?

      • http://twitter.com/atmey Atmey

In FFX there were cities, sidequests, and minigames much earlier in the game. In earlier FF games there was a world map, it felt like exploring. The dungeons were explorer-able, in FFXIII it was more like a long tunnel.

  • Aoshi00

Pretty in-depth review by Impress Watch.. it’s good that the 360 game is on 1 disc instead of 3 this time since it was the pre-rendered cutscenes that took much of the room for the first game.. but there was no need to backtrack in 13, there’s probably a lot more here due to visiting the same locations by time traveling..

That’s cool w/ the bonuses from save files.. would those be the Lost Reports on the S-E website now by any chance?  They were narrated by Cid’s right hand man and Rosch so far..  I’m getting the Jpn ver on PS3 and US ver on 360, but don’t have the US 360 ver for 13..

I like the new cover that just went up by the way, Lightning again :) Getting the novel Fragments Before too since I thought Episode Zero was indispensable..

  • dr000d

    Linear Crystarium confirmed? Meh…

    • http://darron13.deviantart.com Darron Pirtheesingh

When they said just one path, I think they meant it’s not split into different roles like in XIII, not that there’s no player choice in what you upgrade (also like XIII)

…would make sense to me anyway since they seem to be trying to fix all the problems people had with XIII

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

“Digest” scenes? ._. That sounds very……enlightening. Anyways, hoping for a great bonus with this feature.

  • Göran Isacson

Man, I’m hoping the reward for playing through XIII will be a little bit meatier than just recap scenes. Also, kind of curious now: if the Crystarium system only has one path, what’s this about “different roles”? Can’t say I understood that part.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Was hoping that the save data would translate into some in game goodies and bonuses, but it’s all good. The game seems awesome, I have the Crystal Edition pre-ordered so, bring it on SE.

  • YarboroughSales

Huh. So that’s what it does. I hope XIII-2 becomes popular so I won’t have to nearly murder all of my friends to play it. It’s not a bad game AT ALL. I don’t see anything wrong with it, people are just mad that the DLC costs (And for good reasons and an EASILY AFFORDABLE PRICE) and they couldn’t make sense of the story. Proves how much people don’t think sometimes. Anyone see the finalized case artwork?

  • Yuri Huitron Alvarado

Fans from the first FF XIII ?? don’t make me LOL

    • elsalvadorps

Come at me bro, FFXIII fan right here

      • godmars

Its not that people liked the game that pisses me off, its that they’ll argue that it was “good” if not perfect. I’ve played tons of games that had bad mechanics that I still liked for one reason or another, but first and foremost I admit that they were bad to other people.

FFXIII apologist on the other hand defend it to the death and that’s really the wrong message to be sending to Square. Especially now when they’re at a point they think they can do no wrong, and needed something like FFXIV rather than XIII to tell them otherwise.

        • Sorrows_Neptune

I have never heard someone regard FFXIII as perfect. NEVER.

          • godmars

Care to share the forums you visit? The people in the ones I go to are often bats*it crazy.

          • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Well that means you aren’t on many gaming forums. Which is good. Like godmars says, they’re crazy and a tad delusional. lol

    • SerendipityX

Despite popular belief, there are a lot fans of FFXIII. There was just a loud vocal minority who hated it.

      • neo_firenze

There are indeed many fans of FFXIII.  However, I do think the more common opinion is somewhat negative.

For the record, I’m personally a bit mixed.  The game certainly had its flaws, but there was a lot of good there too (mainly in the battle system).  Overall I can honestly say it’s my least favorite Playstation-era (PS1, PS2, PS3) main series FF release though.  Doesn’t mean I hate it though, and I’m hopeful that XIII-2 corrects many of the issues I had with XIII.

        • SerendipityX

Hmm, you’re probably right about common opinion. But I’d say it was more of a mixed bag. Its just weird that its automatically assumed that everyone hated XIII, when most just had gripe with some it’s flaws. I’m ridiculously excited for XIII-2 especially since I have an unhealthy love for XIII’s battle system. :D

          • http://backloggery.com/wanderingmind WanderingMind

Having just gotten a Platinum for FFXIII last night, I felt that FFXIII was a mixed bag.  There were times when the game annoyed me, and then there were times when I actually enjoyed the game.  For me, the game became really good near the end of the main game, and I really enjoyed the postgame a lot more than the main game.  It felt challenging, access to powerful weapons was a plus, and so on.

So yeah, I’m kind of looking forward to this one.

          • Fonic

Yeah the postgame was probably my favorite part as well. The grinding for certain materials got a little tedious of course but the high-level marks were fun to fight and really showed the strengths of the battle system.

I’ll definitely pick this one up at some point.

          • neo_firenze

I hear ya on the XIII battle system.  I really love the often maligned X-2 for its fast paced battle system too, and in that I found some similarity in the things I enjoy about XIII.  Getting more and more excited about XIII-2 myself, here’s hoping it builds on what made XIII good and addresses some of the frequent complaints (i.e. linearity and sometimes slow moving story).

      • http://twitter.com/AntiExistence Wait what

Indeed. I have been a huge fan of FFXIII since it first came out. Played it twice, loved every moment of it. 4th best Final Fantasy game out there.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

I also liked FF XIII. It had a strong female lead character, it had 0 westernization, it didn’t have the usual “level blockade” they used in XII and a lot of other of their RPGs, it had sidequests and the combat heavely borrowed from small niche JRPGs.
There was nothing not to love about it. Maybe for people who don’t like JRPGs but they weren’t their target for once. :D

    • http://twitter.com/StizzyStrawHat Stizzy Straw Hat

I ain’t going to lie: never gave it a chance, until recently I had some leftover credit, so I picked up. Ended up liking it a lot. The linearity didn’t bother me as much as I thought; game did well to develop the characters (a big plus for me in a RPG), so I kinda overlooked that.

      FFXIII was a good experience.

So I still have to watch the summary of what happened in XIII even though XIII-2 will read my past data? That’s stupid.

So there’s no real change to the Crystarium then? Is it going to be the same as XIII?

    • chicken_and_rofls

It’s a Final Fantasy game.  It’ll have skippable cutscenes.  So, no, you don’t have to watch the summary.

    • mogster

hopefully its not as level caped as it was in xiii, i should not be able to level my characters up completely half way though a level

  • http://vanilladice.deviantart.com/ Dice

Useless bonus… thank god, because I think only 20% of the people who played the game actually beat it.

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Yeah, I want to beat it…but I get distracted with other things and other games. To me, it’s not a game that can be played in a large chunk at once.

      • Solomon_Kano

I agree. I try to sit down and play it, but I just can’t go straight through. I can only play it for like an hour before I find myself wanting to play something else.

I beat the whole of Arkham City (minus some bonus stuff) in a week and I still haven’t beaten XIII. Ugh. I disappoint myself lol.

    • http://twitter.com/Sesshomaru47 Kaidan Roberts

I finished it. Since then I have been taking on all the optional bosses, I only have a few left. I had no problem with the game story or the gameplay. If anything the main game was a little easy and I was dumbfounded when I heard square had added a patch to make it easier.  I would have thought they would have made the catch up thing optional like in the Yakuza games.

    • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Well it was CHORE  to  get through.

  • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

I like the new cover that is shown on Play-asai but wish it had Callus on it also. And yay for keeping my old file in psn cloud.

  • http://www.ukanime.com abigsmurf

Great idea by Square-Enix! Limiting the summary of the first game so that the only people who can watch it will be the people who don’t need it!

    • http://twitter.com/UEH Mike Conroy

What? EVERYONE gets the summary, having save data from the first game just changes who narrates it.

  • AoNoise

SE… you’re just asking for it, aren’t you?

Meh, I enjoyed XIII quite a bit, good to know I’ll get SOMETHING for almost nothing

  • kroufonz

“sequel will show players digest scenes with different characters narrating”

just that? atleast let serah use FFXIII costume square!

  • http://radiantloki.blogspot.com/ Mark Dinh

Wow… they changed the Crystarium system too? And what do they mean only one path? I’m starting to like XIII more than XIII-2 now… =/. I still hate the monster recruit system… I like the fact that they look different if you equip certain items… I see the Cactuar… That is the only monster I’m getting… and Behemoth. Plus, what a waste of a save file, SE could have done so much more.

  • Solomon_Kano

That’s a pretty useless bonus for having a save of the previous game. Ah well. I didn’t really expect any bonus, so anything works.

  • Göran Isacson

… Actually this idea could be pretty funny if Square Enix could just make the recaps true to their respective characters!
    Snows narration:
“So uh… there was a bunch of bad guys going around, and they turned my girl into a crystal. So I started beating them up and what do you know, me and everyone saved the world! Except then Fang turned into a dragon and we clapped our hands and came back and then Vanille and Fang hugged and turned into crystal and Lightning disappeared and I got my girlfriend back. It was kinda confusing.”Sahz narration:
“So I took my son on a trip to the power plant so I could teach him how Cocoon works when all of a sudden these weird-ass hippie lesbians jumped out of nowhere and turned my boy into a l’Cie. And as if that wasn’t enough crazy crackers started pouring outta every corner and each and every one of them managed to make everything go from bad to worse, and I don’t know HOW we did but we survived and I shot God in the face. I’d like to think it was a net win, over all. Except we lost the lesbians, but I think they got married on the astral crystal plane or something so, whatever. I’m getting too old for this shit.”Chicobo’s narration:”As ancient wheels turned to enact the plan set by spirits of stagnation, I took the first of many steps of my journey to become the Corpulent Lord of Legend, who would lead my kin to the promised land. These adventures too shall one day be told, but for now I shall simply impart unto you the tale of my first mount, and our quest to save his son and wreak bloody retribution upon the specters deluding themselves into thinking they were Gods… with power over ME.”

    • http://twitter.com/thoresz Daniel T

Apparently you just spoiled the ending for me but it was totally worth it

  • Haohmaru HL

could have also made some special item for those who are iwth platinum :C

  • PrinceHeir

yay for recap movie scenes :P

hope to see Fang’s perspective :)

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Good thing I finally forced myself to complete it earlier this year. Now it won’t feel like I wasted a small portion of my life and I get “something” for playing through it. Speaking of importing save data, even though this doesn’t have it, all sequel’s should have a import save data feature. Rewards the player for buying and completing the first.

  • http://www.rukinet.com/ Rukishou

    WHAT. WHAT! WHAT!?

I finally finished this game like a year ago and I’ve kept the save file – just in case something like this would happen – up to now… Except I erased that file YESTER-F%&KING-DAY because I desperately needed the hard drive space!

Okay, I’ve calmed down. They said no save data will actually be imported, but if there is a save file you get a bonus? Does that mean you need a complete save file (where you have beaten the final boss) or just any save file? If the latter, I can just start the game over, save at first opportunity, and stop. Technically, you *have* played the game if there is a save file present, even if you only played it for half an hour… :P

The bonus probably isn’t something big, but I don’t want to miss out, and the fact that I erased the files literally the day before this was revealed is just so frustrating.
