That’s Not A New JRPG, It’s The New RPG Maker

By Spencer . November 7, 2011 . 2:28pm

While the RPG Maker series is dormant in the West, Enterbrain keeps making new installments for Japan. RPG Maker VX Ace adds elements like party members that follow you, two layer backgrounds, and "TP" as a parameter. That’s in addition to MP, so game creators can whip up two kinds of special attacks.

RPG Maker VX Ace will be available for PC on December 15. RPG Maker DS Plus launches on the same day with school, sci-fi, and sengoku tilesets.

Eh, I’ll stick to old VX.

    • http://www.hamstapowah.com/ Zaron

I’ll stick to old XP.  :/  VX felt like they reverted ten years to me, it’s way too restrictive without crawling around in the scripts, and if I’m gonna go to that much effort I’ll use GM or something and build from scratch so I’m not beating someone else’s system into doing what I want.

I’m also for XP, higher resolution AND unlimited Sprite Size. :) Really neat things.

I seldom hear about RPGM stuff anymore.  I figured it was a strictly Japan-only thing.

I mean I hear plenty of MIDIs coming out of it, if nothing else.  Freedom House 2′s site, for starters.

    • Ladius

It is all but a Japan-only thing, though: there are countless western games developed on RPGMaker, and some teams even started to try commercial releases in the indie scene. Unfortunately I haven’t the time to check those releases, but I hear there are some rough gems.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Hiryuu

I check on some of that stuff out of passing interest every once in a while.  There’s some pretty impressive stuff that they’ve done with VX.  Moreso that I would’ve imagined you could do with a program such as that.

Still, I would wonder how much better off in some of the more complex cases that some people would’ve been with their own engine rather than relying on RPGM.

        • Ladius

Well, many neat tricks by RPGMaker users only require a decent amount of script knowledge, while building your own engine is a whole different matter (many teams in that scene don’t have programming knowledge to begin with, aside from the basics).

Another interesting use of RPGM is apparently for creating visual novels, there are some devs out there who prefere this method to more specific editors like Ren’py.

        • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

No sane person makes an own engine anymore, but yeah, there are engines out there that give you more options.
But then you need an additional guy who does the programming.

When will they ever release a console rpg maker again? I have RPG Maker 1, 2 and 3. Only time I got to see 3d in an RPG Maker.

    • jujubee88

Enterbrain might make a new RPG Maker for the PS Vita. They are listed as having a PS Vita. dev kit That does not guarantee much but, there is a higher probability, seeing as they have a dev kit.

Man… this definitely takes me back.

Wonder if your OS has to be Japanese to run this…because man I’d love to try it!

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Enterbrain did translate RPG Maker XP and VX, so chances are that this gets translated too.

  • http://orangtunes.blogspot.com BIG MAC

Oh man, I remember when I was younger it was RPG Maker everyday, all day.

  • Popari

I miss RPG Maker XP sprites and scenery. They were gorgeous in my opinion. The new sprites just don’t suit to my tastes (too chibi and squished) so I stopped with RPG Maker after XP.

good old times, i can never complete a full game though

  • skymap

But does it offer as much freedom as XP?

  • Omikuji

…I always really loved these things. Just making games or even just making stuff on there was always fun to me. I cannot wait to see when that comes out.

  • doomspeller10

Now this is what I was talking about. Hopefully they give more freedom than in VX regarding map creation. The default battle system is still disappointing, but some scripting here and there should do the trick.

Speaking of dormant in the west, I’m still waiting for petitecom(puter) for 3ds

It’s far from dormant, in fact there are a LOT of forums dedicated to the RPG Maker series, tons of people use the software here, and there is even a sight to buy a legal English version.
Get your facts straight Spencer, before saying such rubbish.
