Odin Sphere Is The Best Selling PS2 Classic

By Spencer . November 8, 2011 . 1:31am

Odin Sphere Is The Best Selling PS2 ClassicSony started re-releasing PlayStation 2 games as digital downloads in North America last month. The surprise announcement came with five titles: Ring of Red, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, GrimGrimoire, God Hand, and Odin Sphere.

Out of those five releases, Odin Sphere was the top selling title. Vanillaware’s game was number 15 on the top 20 selling games from October 2011 sales chart. That’s two slots under Final Fantasy VII and four above God Hand, the only other PS2 classic on the list.

Bloodrayne, Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland, Stuntman Ignition, and Full Spectrum Warrior were newly added this month. PlayStation 2 classics are $9.99 each on the PlayStation Store.

Awesome. Odin Sphere is rad so it’s good people are getting in on it. :D

  • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

Odin Sphere deserves this kind of attention– good for it! I should play more of it. I’ve gotten heavily distracted by other games.

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

I’m not surprised; quality aside, there aren’t a lot of PS2 Classics right now. Maybe I’ll pick it up soon too. My US PSN account has some cash left.

  • z_merquise

Aw, no Grimgrimoire in the list. It’s another Vanillaware game that not only looked beautiful, but very fun to play as well.

Though it’s a good thing that God Hand and Odin Sphere sold well at PSN. People who missed these games should definitely get it.

    • icecoffemix

It’s fun but get repetitive after a while, key to victory? spam dragon and chimera, profit.

    • Go2hell66

I bought grim grimoire and odin sphere, best purchases i’ve ever made on psn

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Grimgrimoire is an underrated game that’s fun, but in my opinion, pretty difficult compared to Odin Sphere.

    Let’s support Chrono Cross today!

    • shion16

Chrono cross is for psx……..but okay

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

I’m not trying to be the sensational one (for once) but I thought Odin Sphere was lame. Sure, it looked beautiful and had an awesome selection of music thanks to Sakimoto. But actually playing it was frustrating, especially when fulfilling the requirements for the true ending. I compare Odin Sphere to a rose: beautiful to look at but don’t pick it up.

    • icecoffemix

You are actually… kinda right on that, I was playing the game till chapter 4 when my saves got corrupted, and haven’t been able to replay the game to this day due to the gameplay mechanic.

They really improved the gameplay on Muramasa though.

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Hmp…, ONLY A TRUE MAN GRASPS THAT ROSE AND FEEL ALL THE THORNS WITH EVERY FIBER OF HIS BODY!, for the beautiful comes with a price, nothing is purely good, if it were, this world would be boring!

      EL PSY CONGROO!

    • http://profiles.google.com/mpureka Mike Pureka

Usually I find this is the result of people playing the game wrong. Yes, yes, I just told you “Ur doin it wrong” but hear me out – the game LOOKS like a brawler.   People jump in and say “Ah! I mash buttons and slay many foes! Excellent!” and then they mash buttons, and get beat up a lot, and get frustrated and think the game is bad.   But it’s not.  It’s just not a brawler.  To play Odin Sphere “properly” you need to do a lot of item management – items make a HUGE difference, and I’m not just talking about healing.   If you’re not using the alchemy system almost constantly, and deploying offensive potions with some frequency, you’re not really playing the game “smart”, and the game needs to be played smart, because you can’t just mash it.

Think of it like this – if you tried playing Dark Souls like you would play Darksiders, you’d think it was a bad game too.

  • Go2hell66

i’m still shocked at the number of people that don’t like this game, i think its amazing, possibly one of the best games i’ve ever played :/

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3ITUZUKPZYUV2VUCVXUW3DVO6Y AJ

I haven’t played Odin Sphere yet, but I’m glad that God Hand is selling well.

  • noctis_nox

And Final Fantasy VII is still selling. Lol
You can’t really deny how awesome that game is. XD

Anyway great for God Hand. I hope it sells more so there will be God Hand 2 ( very unlikely /sad face ).
I also hope Nocturne will be on PSN because I haven’t played it yet. Can’t find a copy.

    • epsilonalpha

       > Haven’t played Nocturne

You’re missing large portion of your life, poor you. :(

Let’s all hope for Nocturne PSN for this guy’s salvation.

      • JustThisOne

        My salvation too, plz. I only got to play a small portion before it was stripped from my hands. ;___;

        • epsilonalpha

          Ye Shall Be As Demi-Fiend.

      • noctis_nox

I sure hope hearing great things from that game.

    • Locklear93

      Can’t find a copy?  http://www.amazon.com/Shin-Megami-Tensei-Nocturne-Playstation-2/dp/B00024W1U6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320771231&sr=8-1

$34.79, new, sold direct from Amazon, not a third party. It WAS hard to find, but IIRC it got a reprint. EDIT: Correction–sold by a third party, but shipped by Amazon.

      • noctis_nox

We don’t have an amazon here in my country. I look everywhere on local stores in my area and couldn’t find one. My best bet is if someone will sell it to me used but I’d rather buy it new so I really hope they release in on PSN so in that way I can support Atlus.

    • http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=2704923 Buntar0

The Godhand sequel is boderline impossible actually, staff is not working for Capcom anymore. Buy Tango Gameworks has an unnamed project left (God Hand director works there).

As unlikely is it is, perhaps it could turn out to be a spiritual successor.

    • Joanna

Yeah it is insane. I’m pretty shocked as FFVII hasn’t aged all that well.

  • karasuKumo

Never played it, can’t believe I missed out on such and awesome game! Thank you Sony for putting it on PSN.

When San Andreas and Genji are added to PSN I don’t think I’ll be leaving the house for a while haha.

  • Jirin

Odin Sphere had such a great combat system.  It needed two things:

    1)  Plot sequences viewable at will after you see them.
    2)  After finishing a chapter, jump back into it at any point without having to start from the beginning.  (So it’s easy to fill up a character’s healing stock before the last chapter)

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

      1) After the title menu, take the little girl and have her pick up her cat. That allows you to see the full storyline. Unfortunately that’s the only way.
      2) Good point. Can’t argue there.

  • Syltique

I haven’t purchased any PS2 Classics yet.  I want to know if they will work on PS3 and Vita first.

    • KaruCgSt

it would be amazing to play this on the vita *-*

    • godmars

Haven’t they said that PS1 titles wont work on the Vita day one?

      • Syltique

Yeah, I heard that too.  It’s unclear if it will work at some point.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

No surprises there, it’s perhaps the rarest and most sought out game out of those which were released by the target audience these games were actually conceived for.

    Here’s hoping Europe catches up on the ps2 classics fever, coz I want to get dat Odin’s Sphere already ;_;

  • Wackoramaco87

So happy to hear this! Hopefully there will be more PS2 classics that are different from the “norm”.

For those who have purchased it already, are the same issues present that were on the disc? The slowdowns, etc?

  • ddh819

bought it on psn but haven’t played it yet.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

So with good sales that means more future Vanillaware games for everyone, right? Right?! Still waiting for release dates for Grand Knights History and Dragon’s Crown… =(

    • Ladius

Both games have been already announced for the western markets, the next step would be to have a localization for Princess Crown PSP, but that’s not only extremely unlikely, but probably impossible due to source code issues :

    • Joanna

You know, it’s quite amazing that a small developer like Vanillaware has managed to get all these games released in English so far. Most other companies have many more games left on the wayside and are more well known than Vanillaware. I guess even if they are niche, all these publishers see some potential in Vanillaware. Ignition at least does, they outbid XSEED on Muramasa and are now funding Dragon’s Crown.

  • kupomogli

Not the worst game, but that good of a game either.  I’ve heard it fixes the slowdown in the game so that’s always good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

While it had his problem in gameplay (the slowdowns) the story was amazing with five main characters and the multiple final battles. So it’s not a good game it’s a great game.

If Vanillaware make a game with the gameplay of Muramasa and the story of Odin Sphere I would explode.

      • Ladius

Personally, they made my hype meter explode with Dragon Crown’s announcement.

Vanillaware 2D art direction + multiplayer side-scrolling beat’em up with rpg elements and a Tower of Doom feel = absolute bliss.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Personally I prefer a single player game with heavy storyline in the only way that Vanillaware do. Beat’em up are not my things. Though Dragon Crow’s looks gorgeus enough to make me want to play it and Grand Story looks awesome.

    • raymk

How can you say its not the worst game and then say its not that good of a game either in the same sentence?  Which one is it because they way you said it is its just bad not good or bad.

      • kupomogli

Because Ring of Red is the worst game on that line up.  Just because it’s not the worst doesn’t mean it’s good.

God Hand though.  Amazing game right there.

  • http://twitter.com/EdgeKun Ed Powell

Awesome! Good to see that an older goodie like this is doing well on PSN! Here’s to hoping it encourages Sony to bring more PS2 classics onboard!

  • Solomon_Kano

Whoo! I bought it and it’s awesome, so I’m glad it’s doing well.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

Great to hear! Odin Sphere is amazing, but I needed the Codebreaker to beat it. (Yes, I’m shameless like that.)

I was glad to see GrimGrimoire added, because I missed it somehow the first time around and was never able to find it used! I’m really loving it now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ValkyrieProfileGuy Jesse Thompson

I loved GrimGrimoire as much as Odin Sphere, both great games with great stories!  I wish I could have played Muramasa…

  • Ladius

It’s great that they choose to bring us niche, rare games in order to let a new audience appreciate them. The fact that those games are actually successful is great, too.

  • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Misleading title! I thought Odin Sphere was top 15 overall, not just PSN. I did buy a disc version of Odin Sphere last month on Amazon. =)

  • eliel

nice to hear Odin Sphere is selling well digitally I got disc version I beat the game once on Hard and got the bad ending. Anybody know the order of characters to beat the final chapter?….

    • http://www.facebook.com/ValkyrieProfileGuy Jesse Thompson

I do recommend gamefaqs for this answer, sorry I can’t tell you off the top of my head.

    • http://twitter.com/northswainglow Rosa

If you’re still looking for it! Here they are:

      Cornelius fights Ingway.
      Mercedes fights Onyx.
      Velvet fights the Cauldron.

      Oswald fights the undead king.
And Gwendolyn fights Leviatan or whatever weird wrong name they gave Jormungar I forget. The giant dragon.

  • amagidyne

Oh! I actually forgot to pick these (Odin Sphere, God Hand) up. Thanks for the reminder.

  • theworldofnoboundries

I hope through this success Vanillaware will release something like this once more as GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere is one of the most entertaining game i have ever played on PS2.

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

If you’re looking for more Vanillaware Ignition is releasing Dragon’s Crown for the PSVita and XSEED is releasing Grand Knights History for the PSP (also compatible for the Vita).

And with the recent successes Vanillaware has been having with Marvelous I think we can expect some more Vanillaware titles in the future.

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

I’m hoping that Sony will make these games compatible for the PSVita in the future. I would love to play Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire on the go alongside Grand Knights History and Dragon’s Crown (hell my PSVita would probably be my portable Vanillaware player if that happened).

  • AzureNova

I loved Odin Sphere >_<, but 4 words, BELIAL THE RAGING DRAGON O_O -_-.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Akshat-Jiwan-Sharma/1187421478 Akshat Jiwan Sharma

I wish God hand would get some love this time around

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Tetlow/1301633575 Nick Tetlow

It’s great to see it’s selling now. It’s one of those games that gets high praise then nobody buys it. It’s a miracle they made Muramasa. Any other company would chicken out of making games.

  • Go2hell66

I loved these games so much i’m going to order muramasa ASAP

  • http://profiles.google.com/baldulf2024 Keel J

With a bit of luck they’ll bring Oboro Muramasa to the PS3 in glorious HD
