Ridge Racer Vita Has Many Multiplayer Modes, But Only One Supports 3G

Ridge Racer Vita Has Many Multiplayer Modes, But Only One Supports 3GMultiplayer features are a key feature in Ridge Racer for PlayStation Vita. The game is designed with a Planetary League that puts players in one of four teams. Namco Bandai will release missions each day and players can add to their team’s score by racing on them.

World Race mode has three different kinds of multiplayer options. Ghost Battle lets players exchange data with other players through Near, Wi-Fi, and 3G. After you race a downloaded ghost, data is uploaded so players can see the best ghosts around the world. Ghost Battles aren’t live and this is the only multiplayer option that supports 3G connectivity.

Ridge Racer for PlayStation Vita also has internet battles where eight players around the world can race on a track. Face to face battles record player reactions while you’re racing similar to Ridge Racer 3D or Mario Kart GP. This mode supports up to eight players via an ad-hoc connection. Namco also added time attack and spot race modes for offline racing or crediting mining to tune up your car.

Ridge Racer is a launch title for PlayStation Vita in Japan slated for release on December 17.

Only one multiplayer mode supports 3G, and it’s only ghost battles? I think this really confirms 3G isn’t ideal for online multiplayer. I don’t know, this kind of affirms by decision to stick with a Wi-Fi model, but I shall wait and see.

Well, it doesn’t need anymore confirmation to say 3G is not meant for online gameplay. Regardless I’m getting 3G model just because it’s the only one with GPS built-in.

For “Near” to work on the wifi version only, the location is determined with Skyhook services through the wifi hotspots when you pass by, it can work very well and can be more accurate than GPS if you are in area well covered with hotspots. but,

What if you are in area with rare wifi hotspots (like me)? then GPS (and sometimes with the help of Cell tower triangulation can increase the accuracy in urban areas) is required to enjoy Near.

I’m really interested in “Near”, as I really want to interact with other Vita adapters and meet with new friends :0

Maybe more adhoc multiplier gaming will benefit from that.

“Near” is free to use for any developer. The free integration of “Near” works out well for a PS Vita developers budgets because multiplayer online is something many people seem to want but, developers may not have the time and money for adding multiplayer in everyone of their games.

With “Near”, the online content is free and it can add more value to the owners of a title and it may well create incentive to those who have yet to purchased a game with good “Near” mini-games, DLC, missions, item trading, etc. Not to mention it will likely be much easier for developers to integrate than an elaborate online multiplayer infrastructure.

you’re quite right, it will be good entry for budget developers.

Eventually, more Devs joins in and then we see multiplayer infrastructure.

I was surprised they tried something via 3G.  Regardless, very excited for this game.

Oh man Ridge Racer.  It’s the one reason why I bought a PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3, and XB360 all at launch.  Never got around to buying the 3DS though but I’ll be sure to pick up this Vita version when it arrives.  Looking forward to this new one coming up as well but it almost looks more burnout like than ridge racer.  Not a bad thing I guess

You didn’t get Ridge Racer 64? I mean, yeah, RRDS is basically a handheld RR64 port, but still.

      • Mantiskilla

Haha yeah actually didn’t get around to owning an N64 right away b/c most of my friends at the dorms in college all had one.  So just stuck with my PS1 until PS2 came out

Oh finally a new “real” ridge racer and not some outsourced bs. Ummmm…very nice :)
