Xbox 360 Fans In Japan Recommend These 50 Games

By Spencer . November 13, 2011 . 10:45pm

    Wow, got some surprising picks, as well it’s a surprising order o3o;

  • landlock

Not really that surprising really most XB360 owners in Japan now are people that like American games aswell.

Also the 2D shooter genre isn’t that popular even in Japan.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1769064526 Vivian Mai

    Aw, Nier…

  • jello44

Hell yeah. Forza in the top 3.

  • MrRobbyM

Oh Lost Odyssey…how I miss you and to a lesser extent, my 360.

  • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

As a Japanese 360 gamer I can confirm this list is terrible. Also, the box art used here is Steins;Gate hiyoku renri, not Steins;Gate. I would recommend playing Steins;Gate though, it’s a great game, but… lots of shmups and various other games (Castlevania HD, Mushihimesama Futari, Muchi Muchi Pork and Pink Sweets, Radiant Silvergun, Daytona USA, etc..) are missing.

    • Enma_Kozato

The only thing you can confirm is you have a different preference to what’s listed.

      • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

lol… every 360 user has a different preference. Try making a poll that doesn’t have under 1000 votes… the 360 is doing poorly in Japan but the 360 has a lot more than 1000 fans. And was this by Famitsu360?

        • Enma_Kozato

Yes, yes, everyone has a preference but you can’t “confirm” anything on something as subjective as to what you play on your Xbox.

    • aoihana

The fact that you’re a Japanese 360 gamer doesn’t really hold any merit towards your statement. You can’t confirm or deny this lists integrity just because you’re in the questionnaires demographic. Although, you can have your opinions, and I agree with you in regards to some missing games, but I wouldn’t say it’s a terrible list.

      • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

360 fanboys of Japan are in the 20/30+ age demographic. This means they are less likely to vote in this poll, because their tastes have already been refined, don’t care for what others play, or to make any recommendation, as the mass majority of other users have no reason to bother.

The list would not be better if it were made by westerners though, because the amount of westerners interested in Japanese 360 games is tiny. I think the poll is by Famitsu, not Famitsu360, so 360 fanboys would not have voted.. so the list is messy.

Sony stealth marketing, brand loyalty, and buying homegrown material is killing the 360 in Japan, not the lack of Japanese 360 exclusives. It is simply as ignorant as it sounds.

    • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

I don’t know, even playing Japanese-exclusive shmups on 360, for example Dai-fukkatsu (before localization in Europe), or Dai-ou-jou there’s only a few hundred on the leaderboards. Even the Japanese fan base isn’t terribly large. Leaderboards definitely are noticeably bulkier on regional free releases, like Mushihimesama, and Muchi Muchi Pork.

      But at the same time I’m a little surprised, like you that no other shmups made the cut. But I think it’s typical of these kinds of lists, it really speaks more to a specific group who filled the surveys over “Japan as a whole”. Although if you ask me, Deathsmiles probably would be the highest of them. Even if my own personal pick differs >w<;

    • TrevHead

Too right, that list is depressing due to the lack of arcade and old school titles, especially when the 360 is the successor to the DC imo. As for shmups I would have expected Futari to be on it

I cant see a single XBLA title which ild always imagined where popular with gamers :/ or this list is for boxed titles only.

BTW how is the JPN Live marketplace? Is it similar to PAL with AAA western games and the odd favoured XBLA title getting pushed on the main store page?

      • Aoshi00

Yea, when they list the top 10 best selling XBLA titles for Jpn every month, it’s pretty much the same thing as the US, give or take a few titles, but the shmups are always on there, like Ikaruga and Guwange.. at least that’s what the ranking vids show on Jpn Xbox live, which I always sign in to check out.. now the updates are much less frequent though after the girl Hikari left due to an accident and hospitalization, she was very genki and fun to watch together w/ Rolling Uchizawa, great combo, now he’s rarely on either. usually only w/ Munetasu, the Jpn Famitsu Xbox mag editor, doing interviews w/ Jpn developers and such.. like 5pb’s Shikura Chiyomaru, or Cave’s Asada Makoto…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

Oh man. I should totally replay Lost Odyssey.

  • Go2hell66

There are so many games that shouldn’t be on that list…

    • aoihana

      Luckily, this isn’t Go2hell66′s Top 50 Recommendations  。◕‿◕。

Honestly, I think this is a great list, and it’s pretty much some of the best the 360 has to offer.

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Nier is the last on the list…..

    • Yukito

No it isn’t. Bullet Witch is 59.

Edit: Slick and quick edit guys.

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

EDF made it to the top 10?!
    EDF! EDF! ETC.!

Glad to see GalGun make it, too, although I was expecting The Idolm@ster (1 and 2) to placed much higher. Maybe fans got tired of Bamco and their DLC ways.

  • Christian Wright

i cant find a cheap copy of steins gate anywhere.

    • aoihana

      Well, that’s because Steins;Gate isn’t cheap. ^o^

      • Christian Wright

no japanese game is. except for the phantom breaker copy i got from taiwan on ebay

  • Crimson_Cloud

Not really fan of Halo games, but Reach was really entertaining for me so I’m glad that it was fairly accepted in Japan. If we can trust this list that is…

Kinda thought that Idolm@ster would be on a higher place.

  • http://twitter.com/Sieghardt Sieghardt

Is 27.) Knights of the Round – 14 not Students of the Round? I’ve seen that game on siliconera before and it looked like it’d get a few votes at least

  • Aoshi00

Steins;Gate wasn’t a PC to Console port though, it was a console to PC to PSP to iPad/phone Port… on the 360 first a year before ported to PC, w/ an amazing story which deserves #1.. an original console VN like Instant Brain or Robotics;Notes..

    Loved Lost Odyssey and Nier..

    • Locklear93

Lost Odyssey was fantastic, and damn if I don’t want another, similar title from the same team.  Get the novelist who did the memories (I forgot his name…) involved, too.

      • jj984jj

I doubt many are at Marvelous AQL, at best we can hope the Shadow Hearts guys are still together and get a chance to work on a new RPG.

        • Locklear93

I’d definitely take a new Shadow Hearts, too, as long as it was in the vein of Shadow Hearts or Shadow Hearts: Covenant.  Shadow Hearts: To the New World was awful.

      • Aoshi00

Yeah, always look forward to the Gooch’s next project :) I liked Last Story too even though it was action blended w/ turn-based.

Shigematsu Kiyoshi’s “One Thousand Years of Dreams” was very moving, I bought the book too, but still best read along w/ Uematsu’s music :)  I haven’t read much of his other works though other than knowing he’s an award-winning novelist in Jpn.. the Eng. translation was very good..

I wouldn’t mind another turn-based RPG like Lost Odyssey in the future.. just so old school in spirit and gameplay I loved it.

        • Locklear93

Is there a translated version of the book?  I’d definitely be interested, but my spoken Japanese consists of loose words and phrases, and my written is basically limited to sounds frequently used by characters. (“Ha…” “Ah.” “EH?!”  “Hauu…” that kind of thing.  <_<)  Not exactly sufficient for reading.

          • Aoshi00

Nah, unfortunately the book was only available in Jpn, at least the individual chapters could be accessed from the game’s main menu. I think the couple of extra chapters are from the DLC as well..   novels are a bit harder to read, manga is easier w/ just the dialogue.. I mainly just collected it w/ the Inoue cover :)..  at least they’re translated in the game unlike FF13′s prologue Ep Zero, but now BestBuy is giving the epilogue Ep i novella as the bonus.. Ep Zero was a really good book that made me like 13 a lot more. It would’ve been nice if Ep Zero was incorporated into and spread thruout the game like Lost Odyssey..

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I’m surprised that Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery didn’t appear higher in that list. Especially Lost Odyssey, that game is awesome.

    • Aoshi00

I think the list is pretty much spot-on, Steins;Gate was amazing and one of the best VNs/games I’ve ever experienced and totally deserves being on top, such a unique way that deals w/ time traveling.  Other western franchises like Gears, Forza, & Halo are just as big in Jpn as the US, and MonHun is self explanatory.  So LO being at no.7 is really no shame at all.. and then rest of the list, Fallout 3, Dead Rising, EDF, Alan Wake were all great games, Blue Dragon was everyone’s earlier fav being a launch title.. and you have Bayonetta and Trails HD, both games I incidentally do like more than Vesperia if I had to choose.. for me Red Dead Redemption should be higher though as I love Western.. those are all high quality games up there, just means Jpn fans do appreciate any good games, be it Jpn or Western.. I don’t know why some people think Jpn gamers only play JRPGs or shmups.. Youge really doesn’t have the bad connotation that it once had anymore..

  • kuro_chan666

Dream Club Zero should be higher in the list, maybe even on first place.
And it’s pretty surprising that Agarest Senki isn’t on the list. Strange.

  • http://twitter.com/Fillytase Stephanie Michelle

    >24 votes for Bayonetta
    >91 votes for Gears of War 3
    >43 votes for Gears of Warಠ_ಠ

Don’t get me wrong, I love Gears, but this is surprising coming from Japan… and I do think Bayonetta is better :x

    • amagidyne

      >Bullet Witch is on the list
      (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  • Mister_Nep

That’s….a lot of western games. I’m surprised so many western game made the list.

    • Locklear93

That’s sort of what I was thinking, though my take on it was, “Huh, so the 360 is where Japanese gamers turn for foreign games, the way the PSP is for us…”

      • Mister_Nep

        Ah yeah. That makes sense.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Asch91 Mohsin Faiq

vesperia 16 votes only? what the hell

  • SolNeko

Steins;Gate at the top, just the way it should be
    El Psy Congrue..

  • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

Lost odyssey is nice… But the characters lack facial emotion.. And things can get quite rigid to the extend that I almost cringe… Also, no more random encounter.. I really hate that system since forever… Other than that.. Its a great game..

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

Wow , never expect S;G to be on top , it was just came out recently isn’t it ? And already got the top of it.

    • kroufonz

Stein gate vanilla released 2009 in PC than ported to PC 2010 with additional CG than ported PSP (complete version with all DLC and new movie) this year

  • GodOxidian

“Steins;Gate, a PC to console port from 5pb” Wut ? Is the contrary lol.
And the list seems pretty much altered, favourites games on 360 are games like Idolm@ster, Dream C club, shumps et similar. S;G Seems fair instead.

  • PrinceHeir

    no Oneechanbara??? :

still good to see Lost Odyssey :D

  • http://twitter.com/OhKeh OhKeh

If you are an RPG fan, you have an OBLIGATION to play Lost Odyssey.

  • http://www.karategamesonline.net roger walker

    Forza Motorsport 4 rocks!!!

  • kroufonz

Stein gate is awesome but i would recommend to get the complete PSP version instead (or PC for better understanding and translation possibilities)

    • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

The PSP version is inferior. The 360 version is 720p and 5.1ch, with DLC from the PC version… the 360 version is the complete version of Steins;Gate.

      • kroufonz

what are you talking about? PSP version has all 360 DLC and PC additional content included all on disc and new op movie. the only thing inferior about psp version is resolution5.1 sound doesn’t matter much when you use headset. .

        • Aoshi00

The achievements are great though, made me unlock all the secrets (the different e-mail correspondence w/ different chars to unlock certain conversation) and 1250/1250 it. I know one could still get all the multiple endings w/o it, but I thought the achievement list was very well done and serves as a guideline for you to do the extra stuffs, like unlocking different wallpapers, and the RaiNet episodes..   I unlocked a gamer pic of the Future Gadget Research Lab pin badge as an award too once you got all the achievements.  I really dig playing VNs on console (I’m waiting for Instant Brain now, reviews seem really good).. Playing on the iPad seems to be very cool though..

If one has a 360 of course that would be the best way to play it, easier to read on a big TV and there’s a lot of text, but otherwise it’s been released on multiplatforms now as the alternative..

        • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

The Platinum Collection version of Steins;Gate includes the DLC (from the PC version) and is in native 720p. I don’t really care nor like the new OP… there is a big difference between resolutions and playing a game on 360 to playing on a handheld, especially when it’s concerning a visual novel.

  • http://orangtunes.blogspot.com BIG MAC

This list makes a lot of since because the 360 would be the console to play the western games on. Just like a PS3 list in the USA would possibly have quite a few Japanese games on it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexis-Smith/100002359005831 Alexis Smith

Glad to see Nier recommended in there, if only barely XD

  • http://www.angryrabbit.com/ RamuneIgasu

It’s ironic that an article on this posted today. Last night I took a look and discovered the previous players tab Xbox button menu (probably some peeps from an Otomedius G session). Looked at what they played and what their friends played. Other shmups were pretty scarce. Heck Otomedius X was pretty far down their played list. What I saw in most people’s recently played were: Steins;Gate series, Monster Hunter Frontier, misc. ADVs (mostly 5pb Published), Super Street Fighter IV, MvsC3, Idolmaster or Live For You, Guardian Heroes, and western games like Gears of War 3, Forza 4, and Halo Reach.

    So this list isn’t that surprising. ^_^;

  • JustThisOne

Hmm.. I’m not really that surprised. Though some of the order is a little surprising. Like Dance Central is a lot higher than I expected. I knew it would be on the list, because it’s probably a fun Kinect dancing game… but I didn’t think it’d beat something like Red Dead, for example.

  • http://www.facebook.com/strawberry.kurosaki William Hsia

huh….your sure this was a survey in japan? i coulda swore the 360 had alot better games then this

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CP6A5AIS76WRLGTX7HNFM4ZDFE Matthew Slajs

If Steins;Gate got localized, I would buy an Xbox360 just so I could play it.

  • 128bitigor

Gears of War 3 only second place?! Come on Japanese, don’t be haters, Bleszinsky will get upset…

  • brian yep

    49 games or 50?
Nier and Bullet Witch are too low, and Culdcept Saga should be on it.
