Persona 4: The Play Coming To Japan In March

Atlus already has a Persona 4 anime series and manga. A fighting game, social game, and PlayStation Vita port are also in the works. Where else can Persona 4 appear? How about the stage.

Marvelous AQL (yes, the makers of Little King’s Story and Senran Kagura) are adapting Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 into a live action play. Persona 4 Visual Live is being written by Shintaro Asanuma who voices Shulk in Xenoblade and the voice actor who plays Teddie will reprise his role for the show.

Here’s the cast:

Protagonist: Toru Baba
Yosuke Hanamura: Takahisa Maeyama
Chie Satonaka: Minami Tsukui
Yukari Amagi: Risa Yoshiki
Kou Ichijo (Basketball Captain): Motohiro Ota
Daisuke Nagase (Kou’s friend): Jyoji Satome
Ryotaro Dojima: Masahashi Taniguchi
Toru Adachi: Masami
Teddie: Kappei Yamaguchi

Persona 4 Visual Live will take place on March 15, 2012 to March 20 at the Sunshine Theater in Ikebukuro. Tickets for the show start at 7,000 yen ($90) for standard seats and 10,000 yen ($130) for premium seats.

    wat.

    Really?

  • Go2hell66

lol i’m sorry but i don’t see this working :/

    • OneOkami

Not working as in an unfaithful adaptation, or not working as in it won’t be successful?  If its the latter, I actually wouldn’t be surprised it was quite the opposite.  If I remember correctly, the Phoenix Wright musical did quite well.

  • darkraiders

I like persona 4 but release persona 5 already -_-

    • YarboroughSales

Calm down, it’s in development, you impatient fanboy.

      • darkraiders

Man people sure like to say fanboy to everything nowaday seriously if you don’t know what the hell your talking about just stfu it’s not because i want to play a new Persona after more then 5 years of waiting i’m a fanboy.
Btw i only played 2 of all the Persona released until now…
I waited like 5 years now for FF versus XIII and seriously i would have liked much more for S-E to work on that game in place of working of a stupid sequel for FFXIII but it don’t mean i’m a fanboy of FF just because of that.
Edit :I feel like you need to learn what fanboy mean so read this http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fanboy

Spoken like a true Gabe Newell fan.

    • icecoffemix

I’d rather them release SMT 4 >.> (no, I’m not counting Strange Journey)

      • http://twitter.com/RyougaZell RyougaZell

Even if you don’t count it… Atlus does.

        • icecoffemix

Fine, then just make the next-gen (which is already at their wit end) SMT already Atlus.

          • OneOkami

Just to throw it out there, Strange Journey is even more of a traditional SMT game than Nocturne is, so to reiterate on what RyuogaZell said, Strange Journey is really officially Shin Megami Tensei IV.

That being said, I agree with you.  I wish Atlus was focusing on a new Shin Megami Tensei game rather than yet another Persona remake and another new Persona.  I’m hoping the tentatively titled Shin Megami Tensei game they have supposedly have in the works for the Vita is indeed it.

Thats not to say that I’m not excited a new Persona in the works, but I do think they done more than enough Persona in recent years and would like to see them address their core series some more or perhaps venture into another new IP.  I hope Trauma Center and Catherine proved how exciting that can be.

Personally, the majority of the Atlus titled I’ve enjoyed the most in recent years have been non-SMT spinoffs:

            Strange Journey
            Trauma Team
            Radiant Historia
            Catherine

The only life action adaptation I am interested is a life action film adaptation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wilder/100002008494048 Nicholas Wilder

They would need like 3 films or the story would be incredibly rushed or turn into a fiasco like Tekken.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wilder/100002008494048 Nicholas Wilder

I really love Persona 3 & 4 but this is starting to get out of hand with the spin off of something that already was technically a spin off. I mean Persona 4 has the original game, a manga, an anime, a fighting game, a social game, a remake of the original game, and now its getting a play? What next? Persona 4 on ice? Persona 4 the trading card game? The Musical?

    • darkbartz

Well, P4 TCG technically kind of exists… Weiss Schwarz has a card pack about Persona 4. It also has a card pack for many other games, visual novels and anime, including Persona 3, but it still is cards with Persona 4 characters on them.

    • OneOkami

I suspect Index is a large reason for this.

    • Angeru_Lito

Persona 4 on Ice would be great just imagine the awkward Adachi chase… on ice!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Wilder/100002008494048 Nicholas Wilder

Now that you’ve said that I HAVE to see it.

I want to see who they get for Kanji.

Unless, maybe it only goes up to the Basketball team social link?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

P4 hype is in full swing. Now we get the plays. What’s next? A live action movie?

Persona 4 cereal with marshmallow Rise!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Haha~! More like tofu cereal with Rise ‘mallows.

  • Enma_Kozato

*gets ready for more “milking” bombardments*

    I’m surprised it’s not a musical.

  • Angeru_Lito

I love persona 4 as much as the next guy and I get that Atlus is trying to get people exited for the Vita port, but I think this is too much, but this is only for Japan so I guess it dosn´t really make anything to increase or decrese the eximent for that game so move along. I think Atlus dosn´t need to do anything P4 is very popular already.

  • OneOkami

Though I can’t confidently point the finger at them because, hey, what do I know beyond speculation, but this is the sorta thing that has always worried me about Index, a worry I’ve felt justified having dating all the way back to “Persona 3 Social”.

Correct me if I’m wrong but this kind of massive exploitation of a single (specific) title is uncharacteristic of Atlus which is why I suspect Index is the real mastermind of all these ventures.

This is also why I’ve been concerned about handling of the Catherine IP since the title has been a hit for them.

    • Exkaiser

It’s uncharacteristic of Atlus because none of their games typically sell very well.

They have nothing to milk otherwise.

  • Darkrise

    Too much… It’s too much!

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I like this game a lot, but I really don’t know what they’re going to come up next, it seems excessive. Then again, some fans might enjoy it, and it doesn’t bother me that they do this, at all.

  • malek86

Persona 4 is gonna be the next POT. They just need to get some musical performance.

On a side note, the story of P4 is not that long, and there’s little chance for universe expansion as long as they keep sticking to the main game. Just how many times are people gonna want to play/watch the same story?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=749504598 Shane Guidaboni

This is getting out of control.

  • AndyFe

wow they are going Persona 4 crazy hmmm? I thought this stuff would of happened a couple of years ago

  • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Okay, I’m enjoying the anime and all, but this is getting dumb.

The concept of a play based on a game is awesome and all, but dear god, there are other Persona games besides Persona 4. I know, I bought and played one re-released on PSP recently and it’s been awesome. I enjoyed it far far more than Persona 4 and have it almost beat, whereas I only got to Void Quest in Persona 4 before I stopped caring. They should at least vary the games represented a little more than this. Other games in the series haven’t been fortunate enough to be made into animes or given modern remakes or anything of that sort.

I’m not a huge fan of the Persona series or anything, but I can definitely say that oversaturation is going to kill this individual game, and has the potential to damage the Persona brand as a whole if done really wrong.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

There are PSP versions of Persona 1 and 2IS, they aren’t completely ignoring the other titles.
I would of liked to see that fighting game represent other games than just P4, that would of helped the oversaturation.

Also people forget Shin Megami Tensei exists the more projects Persona gets.  Atlus hasn’t stopped with the other branches but hopefully they balance out the series here.

    • amagidyne

They’re just trying to cash in. Had they wanted to make a good anime out of an Atlus game, they’d have adapted Digital Devil Saga. That would actually make sense.

Likewise, if they wanted to make a good play then they would.. actually, Persona 4 is the best fit here. It’s the only game lighthearted enough in the MegaTen series to not seem incredibly silly with the level of special effects you’ll have in a play.

Plus there’s a lot more talking. Can you imagine trying to adapt Nocturne?

      “…”

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

In my opinion, persona 3 or devil survivor 1/2 should get a anime adaptation.
Since there are more anime that is more grim dark than these and don let me start on evoker=suicide topic.

  • Draculoid

I don’t understand….I never played Persona 4 but tried to jump on it do to all this hype, thinkgni abotu buyign the Vita remake. Then theres a new fighting game in the works, an anime, a magazine and now a play?? Really???

I’ve been following the anime to try and see what all the fuss is about and im really not seeing it. Feels pretty cliche, rinse wash repeat formula for like 5 episodes now. Maybe the game just doesn’t adapt that well into a show or I need to be patient for when the party is finally assembled and the real story/action begins.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Haven’t watched the anime yet, but don’t judge a game by its adaptation.  I recommend playing the game it is one of my favorite PS2 RPGs but there are people who think it is overrated so if you get disappointed it is natural.

      • pothier.adrien

There ARE people who think Persona 4 is overrated ? O_o

They obviously got the bad or normal ending and thought the game was over.

        • OneOkami

Anything popular is “overrated”.  Anything cult is “underrated”.

          • pothier.adrien

            And if it’s both ?

          • OneOkami

Well I meant the term “cult” to imply a relative niche, but vocal community which prides something on being quality, yet fairly overlooked.  It being overlooked is in contrast to something being quite well-known (popular).

But anyway, my main point is that there will ALWAYS be rebels.  If something achieves mass appeal and acclaim, someone will rebel by saying its overrated.  If there are contextually similar products that appear to have relatively little appeal and acclaim, someone will rebel by saying its underrated.

So basically what I’m saying to you is:

Persona 4 having some degree of popularity -> People will claim it is overrated.  So you should not be surprised and should actually EXPECT that.  Keep it in mind for any game that is popular.  It will ALWAYS be “overrated” in someone’s eyes.

      • Yu_TheKing

Teh anime is AMAZING, I haven’t yet played the game but now I’m definitely gonna get the Vita Port.

  • YarboroughSales

Wow, P4 is EXTREMELY popular. Must. See. Play.

    Inb4 Drone, company stuff, bullcrap

  • YarboroughSales

Next thing you know: Persona 4 The Musical.

Haters: Don’t like it? Don’t comment. That’s what we always say where I come from… And no, it’s not Kansas.

  • Chow

The anime seems to be doing good rationing the story over a full season, what with the main story arc and social link side stories, but now they’re trying to convey the story over the length of a play?

[obligatory comment about milking the Persona series]

Also, “Yukari Amagi”?  Some sort of character fusion, haa?

  • Luna Kazemaru

So P4 is the new Call of duty now?

    • Angeru_Lito

Woudln´t that be great?, I can get behind the idea of Persona selling gangbusters like Call of Duty , and you know what… map packs you want to grind the floors 50-75 on tartarus? 15$ Dark Hour Package also Persona Elite were you can post your sick videos of how fast you beat Shadow Teddie,  pre-order for a golden evoker and I can keep going and going.

      • RablaAndrews

You say that like I wouldn’t pre-order for a Golden Evoker.

        • Angeru_Lito

who wouldn’t really online pass becomes something completely different when you´re involving the goofy-looking Teddie sunglasses as a first day DLC

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Cadogan/689735648 Michael Cadogan

I can’t wait for the P4 Jeep Wrangler then. Complete with on board navigation voiced by Teddy.

“Just BEAR a right turn here and you’ll be at your destination!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=713786022 Robert Pomerants

Shoulda been a musical. would have made more sense.

  • darkfox1

Wonder how this is gonna turn out.

  • ddh819

hopefully this will go better than that Spider-Man show

  • RablaAndrews

Are they going to summon Persona live on stage?

    • JustThisOne

Thank god it wasn’t P3 then.

      • Testsubject909

There’d be some easy way to do that actually.

Obviously a prop gun and some good timing and acting, the really tough task would be the support group on sound and lighting who’d need to make everything come together.

        • JustThisOne

Easy on paper, but hard on set, I’ll bet. But yeah, I wonder if someone will ever post a clip of the live show somewhere? I’d love to see it happen.

  • OverlordFuka

Persona 4 the stage adaption? Atlus is pimping Persona 4, lol. Woo!

    • Yu_TheKing

      So much so >w<

  • KyoyaHibari

They really milking the HELL out of Persona now lol, first a P4 anime, 2 more Persona 4 games, then an entire Persona magazine (so I’ve heard) and now a play…like really?

  • http://twitter.com/elixir68k Elixir

I absolutely love Persona 4 but the more I hear about this recent treatment the more I’m reminded that Persona 3 didn’t get this kind of treatment… and what took them so long?

  • http://twitter.com/ninoislucky Nino Topalcevic

So I wonder when that Persona 4 HD for PS3 is coming, based on how much they love milking the hell out of this game. (Actually, doing an HD port of Persona 3 and 4 for PS3 would be incredibly awesome, even more awesome is if they could get Persona 1 and 2 on PSN O_O).

Tangent: I really hope we get word of a new SMT game for a home console (read: PS3) sometime. Whether that is Persona or another iteration, I don’t care :D

…Hm, now I want to replay Devil Summoner 2.

Now I want a new Raido game.

  • http://twitter.com/haitechan MG Parra

I’m not too fond on japanese actors but it should be interesting to watch to see how good is compared to the source. Judging for the previous anime adaptations of Persona, it can be between decent to horrible. Hope it’s the former.

PD: It’s Yukiko, not Yukari. If it was Yukari, I’d have zero interest XD.
