Final Fantasy XIV Producer Hopes To Add Locations From Older Games

In an internal interview conducted by Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIV director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, touches upon some of the things he hopes to introduce to the game in the future. Among these are more locales from other Final Fantasies.

“When we announced Final Fantasy XIV version 2.0, you may have noticed the crystal tower, which some people might recognise from a previous Final Fantasy game,” Yoshida says. “I think the Final Fantasy franchise has had a very great history.”

He elaborates on his thoughts a little further: “Because Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO, it’s a great opportunity for players to feel and experience the Final Fantasy universe 365 days a year. I really want to make the most out of the franchise’s history. Not many other games have this incredible history, so I’d like to put as much of that as possible in this game.”

“Not only by using ideas, objects and locations from older Final Fantasy games, but also by adding new things to the universe. I have a lot of plans, so please look forward to finding out what I have in mind.”

The “crystal tower” Yoshida is referring to is possibly inspired by the one in Final Fantasy III. Other examples of concepts from older Final Fantasy games are Materia, which are already in FFXIV, and Magitek mounts, which are planned for Version 2.0.

Honestly, I’d rather have him focus on making more new things than just recycling old concepts from other FFs. The armory system was flawed and Tanaka was a bit of an ass, but I find that I was more interested in Tanaka’s creativity than Yoshi-P’s rehashing of already used gameplay elements.

“Because Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO, it’s a great opportunity for players to feel and experience the Final Fantasy universe 365 days a year.”I really like this concept. When I first played FF11 back in 2003 I was disappointed by the lack of familiar FF references. The only thing I recognized were the jobs and a couple of monsters but besides that it felt like a typical medieval MMO. I expect I will feel more of a nostalgic connection to FF14 2.0 that I didn’t get from 1.0 and FF11.

As a potential customer (honestly–despite my negative opinion and lack of faith, I’d give it another try) this is the last thing I want to see.  An MMO game world really needs integrity for me to care.  Without that, it’s just game mechanics, and any reasonably decent game is the same as any other.

By tossing in bits from Final Fantasy games that have nothing to do with the world in which Final Fantasy XIV takes place, all they’re doing is chiseling away at that integrity.  In fact, in the name of honoring Final Fantasy’s past games, I feel it’s DISHONORING them.  Final Fantasy 3 does not have anything to do with 4 directly.  Nor do five and six, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, or any Final Fantasy with any other, except when a Final Fantasy spawns a spin-off like 10-X2 or the 13 variant(s?).  Even then, those are set in their own discreet universes with their title of origin, and not carried into the “next” Final Fantasy.

Minor cameos and references are one thing; I just don’t want chunks of random Final Fantasys being thrown in here and there for the sake of “OMG, I really liked FF [insert favorite Final Fantasy here] and it’s here too, so now I like FFXIV!”

I really, really miss the days when I felt like Square could do no wrong. :(

I’m like the exact opposite actually. ;)

I was one of major haters of this game when it was first announced, and to me this game still isnt worth the money.

And yet this actually looks like the first good decision Square made about their otherwise dismal MMO in my opinion. Maybe because I love spotting cameos and references maybe…  And I’m just saying, but they said the Crystal Tower was “inspired” by previous games (III) not ripped wholesale…

And square has done major wrongs even back in the “Glory Days” (i.e Mystic quest, II’s idiotic battle system, VIII’s dumb contrived and sappy story in my opinion) so that last line just seemed like you were parroting Final Fantasy’s fanbase in regards to their b******* and moaning after FFXIII split it right in two…

      • Locklear93

If I was parroting, it wasn’t the fanbase at the FFXIII point–It’d already been years since Square started letting me down.  I broke with Final Fantasy at 8.  I’ve gone back and tried all except 9 and 12, and ended up regretting it each time.  It’s been a very, very long time since I’ve been able to like a Square title.  I mean, back in the day, I even liked Ehrgeiz. :P

You should play FFIX. It’s full of the “old” class archetypes, even the buildings are more medieval-like than in more recent FF. And it has for once a likeable main character. Garnet is a bit annoying but I liked the rest of the cast. I played 1 hour of FFXII and stopped so I don’t know about that one.

And Ergheiz is a terrible game no matter how much you love Square xD

          • Locklear93

I’ve heard that from a number of sources, but aesthetics are king, for me. I’ve never touched Blue Dragon or any Dragon Quest game, and I quit Chrono Trigger in disgust, all because I can’t stand Akira Toriyama’s character designs at all. No, Toriyama isn’t responsible for FFIX, but it’s the same thing–if I can’t abide the art, I won’t play a game.

As for Ehrgeiz… yeah, I know. The Rumble Roses games are also horrible, but (the first one only) I still loved for its hilariously corny story mode. I’m capable of liking some really terrible games. :)

I don’t think they are coming off as straight cameos. I think he intends to pull this off in a more integrated way, so it’s not especially jarring. (I haven’t played it, so I don’t know if the Crystal Towers make any storyline sense…?)

Itt doesn’t look like he’s doing it for the sake of fandom, but for the sake of making his MMO more “final fantasy-ish”. It doesn’t look like they’re intentionally milking a different game of the series.

I don’t think this is much different from the general tone of the series to borrow elements from past games.  Maybe a more extreme form of it.  Not much different especially from FFIX, which is a big bag of references and beloved by a lot of people these days for that very reason.  This is pretty much the same concept…no?

Though I see what you’re getting at and actually agree I think.  The legacy of FF is more to make a new world and bring new creativity each time, not just cram it full of references.  But if you want to get really strict then they should’ve never added moogles or chocobos as recurring species.

But as far as we know, it’s just a Crystal Tower, right?  It’s a pretty neutral throwback to a somewhat iconic setting that is representative of the entire series.  It’d be like making a Big Bridge and calling it Big Bridge even if its not the same Big Bridge from FFV.  (which, actually, they should totally do.  Hey,  Type-0 had a big bridge. Gilgamesh Battle anyone?). It’s not like they implanted the actual Galbadia Garden and all of its inhabitants or something.

Other than that, Materia is not the same as in FFVII.  Surely Magitek armor will not be totally the same, though they are FFVI inspired they will be explained with FFXIV lore.  (Type-0 and Versus have their own magitek armor) etc etc.

Anyway, I see this as a pretty good move, since I feel that the MMO crowd and the Console RPG crowd are somewhat isolated from eachother.  This is a way to bring them together a bit more while also separating it from FFXI.

So we’ll be able to travel to Midgar and Gran Pulse? Don’t know if I like the sound of that….

    • Solomon_Kano

Not necessarily. I see this being smaller than we’re actually thinking. Like specific dungeons from older FFs maybe.

I’d love to see a place like Edgar’ castle.
