Bayonetta’s Character Designer Created Costumes For Soulcalibur V’s Ivy And Tira

By Spencer . November 22, 2011 . 3:00pm

Mari Shimazaki, the character designer on Bayonetta and Okami, created alternate costumes for two of Soulcalibur V’s female fighters. The outfit she made for Ivy looks sort of like Jeanne’s costume, but with a more… ahem… exposed v-neck.

Tira’s alternate costume is another one of Shimazaki’s designs.

Shimazaki also created Leixia’s primary costume. Leixia, Xianghua’s daughter, is a new character for Soulcalibur V’s roster.

Mari Shimazaki, Bayonetta’s Character Designer, Created Costumes For Soulcalibur V

I could tell, these costumes are *whip snapping* wonderful!

  • AzureNova

O_O Holy Sh*t these look amazing. I’d have Mari design anything for me anyday. I loved her already for Bayonetta, and now even more for her Soulcalibur designs too. Hopefully there will be a Bayonetta 2 on the way in the future as well. =^_^=

O_O Wow, these outfits look amazing. I’d let Mari design anything for me anyday.

    • TheDarkEmpress

Agreed, Bayonetta best game ever, it’s epicness leaks over into other titles.

Technically… isn’t bayonetta naked all the time? since her outfit is pretty much basically just her hair.

        • puchinri

Are you saying hair isn’t a plausible fashion to wear and that it’s not a good potential fabric!?

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anesia-Hunter/100001399897271 Anesia Hunter

No no, I’m just saying when she has to do other stuff with her hair she shows that she’s actually naked.

          • puchinri

Hehe, I was just teasing~. That was actually pretty logical, but all things considered, I don’t think that counts as naked. I mean, what’s the difference between animal hair gone through a process and hair being used in a magical process/manner~?

  • http://twitter.com/ExceptionL ExceptionL

She really likes corsets, but then again, so do I. Tira still reminds me of Harlequin, and with that hair, more now than ever.

  • puchinri

Some of the extra boobage exposed on Ivy is a little annoying (no need for commenting on irony or what have you), but I think she wears the outfit well actually. I also like the fact that the character have some form of actual full body piece or semi-shorts under their outfits instead of just panties. Much more practical.

I love Shimazaki as a character (and outfit) designer.

She seems to have a perfect handle on anatomy, composition and stylish. Plus cute and for some, the ever necessary sexy. And all without being patronizing. Too bad more designers can’t have her sense of things. (Amusingly enough, all of those outfits are practical for fighting in many senses while still being excellent style-wise.)

Jesus, how many minks did Ivy kill to make that coat?

Well, those of you who were disappointed by the lack of exposure in Ivy’s main costume▬ there ya go.

Keeping the bird theme for Tira? I like it. Her outfit is really nice; I just hope we can use main character outfits for Create-A-Soul mode, like in Broken Destiny.

I love love love it! Mari’s work is very sexy yet classy.

  • Locklear93

    Lookin’ almost visual-kei there, Tira…

I LOVE guest costumes/characters! Like Tekken 6, it just adds more fan service for those who recognize them.

  • Playlife_2

    Ivy is sexier than ever

    Bayonetta great game ..HOT!! ^^

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

what the heck are these designs? lol awful.

  • JustThisOne

I don’t think I really like Ivy’s. It’s like someone tried to sew together two different jumpsuits. Tira’s is okay. Though she kinda looks too creepy to look burlesque. D:

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m feeling ‘em. Well, not feeling but… yea.

    • Kitestwinblades

Your gonna have to take one for the team and sneak a few feels XD

      100% animal fur…on Ivy? 25% velvet/25% Lace for Leixia!? do tell… Lol

      • Solomon_Kano

Alright, I’ll take one for the team! Or two, if ya get me lol.

  • Okuni-chan

    Leixia’s costume is best . _ . Tira’s is nice but that strong make up does NOTHING to make her look good. Ivy… Well I’m not a fan of the costume but! I can understand where he’s coming from in the theme of Ivy… the puffy-ness of the fur is a bit much. Kinda… odd in some of those pictures ^.^;

  • http://demyxluver1xxandra.deviantart.com/ C.Guzman

Tira looks like a flapper…still nice though!
    I’m loving Leixia’s outfit more.

Know it’s probably not the right place, but what is the point of setting the game in the “future” if the older characters offspring are going to look and play near identical to their parents? Just seems weird to me is all.

    • theoriginaled

Well, if its an entirely new character based on an old character they can shake up the moveset without a) purists crying foul and b) having to create an ENTIRELY new moveset. And as of this game it’s not the “future” its the present as set on the timeline. You cant just say a sequel is set in the future because the previous game was set in the “past” that’s silly.

      • http://twitter.com/digtrioPortable Digtrio

My point was more that they intentionally set the game at a certain point after IV (quite a few years though the exact number eludes me). I don’t quite get the point of that move if they aren’t going to shake up the roster a bit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I love Ivy’s costume but not the color , would more like it on black or white , hell I love black and white , lol. But the design is very amazing and sexy.

  • PrinceHeir

    sexy as hell O_O

actually they said in an interview that Bayonetta almost made it to the roster but due to her elaborate hair and magical attacks and with time constraints she didn’t make it :

“However, Bayonetta not only uses a weapon but also special magical attacks that were beyond the project’s limit at the time of selecting, so this time she was taken off of the list.”

Mari Shimazaki is actually a freelancer???

hopefully she can collaborate with Platinum Games with Bayonetta 2 and all

    • ShinNoKami

      THIS time. :/a Does that mean a possibility of her appearing in a future SoulCal? A cameo for another game? Or am I just being way too positive again? XD;

  • Göran Isacson

For some reason, Tira’s outfit reminds me of Black Swan and now I can’t unsee her as an evil ballet-dancer. Ivy’s outfit is the most fabulous, but it is still not quite as classy as her military uniform from SC. Man I wish they could have kept spinning that angle instead of the dominatrix one for Ivy. I mean good lord she has explicitly made a vow of chastity, so why on earth does she keep wearing these skin-baring outfits? Her wearing gaudy military uniforms would match the character so much more, in my opinion…

    • Testsubject909

      Because tits.

      • Göran Isacson

A fine argument, that I can’t deny. But I at least would find having the most stacked character in the game also be the most clothed to be quite the thrill~.

Then again, I am not a professional character designer so heck, what do I know?

  • willtell

He should really just stick with his bread and butter..

Tons of cleavage and skin tight clothes, heh.

You mean “she” its a girl that does the character designs.

  • PK212

I love her art. The Eyes of Bayonetta was amazing! :D
