By Spencer . November 25, 2011 . 9:00am

The Dreamcast masterpiece, Under Defeat, will be revived, says the game’s official site. G.rev is bringing their vertical shooter to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2012.

Under Defeat HD Lands On PS3 And Xbox 360 This February

Under Defeat has a World War II theme, but it’s actually set in alternate universe where you play as a helicopter pilot. G.rev hasn’t said too much about what’s new in Under Defeat HD aside from tate and widescreen modes. Under Defeat HD will be released as a retail game in Japan for 5,600 yen ($72).

Just to let people know, G.Rev on their facebook page have explicitly mentioned that the Xbox 360 version will be region-locked.

Doesn’t affect me, but I know it will affect some people out there.

    • aoihana

Thanks for the heads up! I was going to play it safe and stick with the PS3 version, glad I was right. 。◕‿◕。

Just looked up Under Defeat, and it looks awesome! Can’t wait for this HD version (◕‿◕✿)

    • Aoshi00

Wish it were region free but I think I’m sticking w/ 360 as well.. wonder what is included in the Limited Edition, it’s on AmiAmi now and a good 2100 yen more than the regular edition.. doesn’t say what are the bonuses..

      • superdry

According to Play-Asia the limited edition comes with a superplay DVD, soundtrack and an exclusive box to hold everything.

        • FX102A

Tempting, but not sure its worth the £70 price Play-Asia is asking. I’d love a hard copy but I have to know my limits. Also I think I preferred the standard cover to the Special Edition one for the Dreamcast.

Now if there had been an artbook in there with full mechanics drawings that would have had me.

          • Aoshi00

Yea, very true, I would’ve loved an artbook.. on AmiAmi it’s about 7000 yen, plus shipping it’s probably around $100, so that’s like 70 Euro, but isn’t the LE like over 80 Euro on Play-Asia though at $107.99 and there’s another $20 for shipping like $130/100 Euro total… I kinda regret getting SotC/Ico box from Jpn, the artbook/interview isn’t really worth the premium.. and getting the LE for every shmup is really a killer..

The DVD should’ve included these stuffs, like interviews and artwork..

        • Aoshi00

Thanks, I wonder if the rearranged soundtrack is any good.. I did like the Mamoru-kun rearranged OST..  I rarely check Play-Asia these days, their price just isn’t good at all, like NCSX it’s extremely high now..   this year’s X’mas coupon is $7 off of $77 and $15 off of $150… that’s really not much help.. I remember last year it was $5 off of $50 and $12 off of $100 or something.. and their shipping has gone up too.. these days it’s either YesAsia and AmiAmi for me.. BTW, until Jan next year, YesAsia is giving a $5 coupon on any purchase over $50 and there’s no minimum  for your next purchase unlike P-A.. I’ve been kinda stacking the coupons from Y-A now.. once an order is shipped, using $5 on the next one.. and the price w/ free shipping even before coupon is better than P-A’s..  Well, I guess I’ll see if the outer box has really good art..

          • OneOkami

Yeah, Play-Asia has really gone downhill a bit for me.  I was shocked when I got that Christmas coupon email and saw just how much they bumped up the minimum prices for using the coupons (I expected an increase given they’ve raised their everyday coupons to a $60 minimum purchase when it used to be $50, but certainly not THAT much).  And yes, their shipping has noticeably gone up as well, which is a darn shame as that, combined with its (formerly) competitive prices is what really drew me to them (YesAsia is king with me now in that category)

At one point in time, Play-Asia and NCSX were my go-to import retailers (especially NCSX since I used to live a matter of hours away from them and got stuff in a like a day with the cheapest shipping option), but nowadays, for games at least, I’m pretty much like you, mostly AmiAmi and YesAsia.

          • Aoshi00

Totally man, I was looking forward to P-A’s Xmas coupons this year and thought I would get a thing of two from them since I haven’t in a while.  I even signed up w/ one more e-mail so I would get 2 sets of coupons. Frankly the new minimum ($77 and $150, seriously?) plus the higher shipping is a joke.  I know yen-dollar exchange rate is at a record bad, but P-A and NCSX prices are just ridiculous and not competitive at all compared to AmiAmi and YesAsia.  And Y-A is giving a $5 coupon for every order over $50 w/ free shipping until 1/31/12, which is why I’m placing all my pre-orders w/ them… AmiAmi doesn’t have crazy mark up and their discount gives you the best price for Limited edition and figures..  sometimes I even get a better deal from Cdjapan.co.jp (like the upcoming FF13-2 Fragments Before novel).

Same here, NCSX is in NYC and I’m in Jersey, shipping takes one day, but I wouldn’t even look at their prices right now, I used to check their daily updates.  Still, NCSX has slipped up on a few pre-order bonuses for me and I don’t take my chances w/ them anymore.

          • superdry

Yea, I’ve noticed that prices have been going up and up.  I’m curious to see what P-A’s x’mas sale and chinese new year sales are going to like.

I’ve been ordering limited editions from Amiami now – good price and I can get the pre-order bonuses (I usually pre-order once they put it up.  Unfortunately, I missed out on the new Hatsune Miku 3DS game…hopefully they resolicit).  I do choose EMS shipping so sometimes that negates any discount that I get ordering from Amiami, but it’s hard to beat 2-day international shipping.

          • Aoshi00

That’s true, I guess they might have some good stuffs on sale by CNY, but I most likely would have gotten those games alrdy (just like Thanksgiving now), or the stock would be gone pretty fast.. I still need to get Last Window, doesn’t seem like it would be out in the US ever and the Jpn game is pretty rare now..

Yea, w/ EMS shipping that pretty much cancels the discount, but it’s good you get things fast w/ tracking (I’m always cheap when it comes to shipping and choose free if available as I don’t mind the wait).. actually I ordered a bunch of blu-rays from Amazon Jpn before and the shipping came out to be ~400 yen per item on average and they still ship each item by DHL which gets here in 1-2 days too, I was pleasantly surprised at first..

wow, that’s a lot of pre-order bonuses for the 3DS Miku game..and the SD Nendoroid is cute.. I’m out of room on my desk for figures though, been buying a lot of Saint Seiya ones, I have 5 now.. and these pre-orders sold out fast.. I missed pre-ordering the Aries Mu EX figure back in Aug and I’ve been literally refreshing the page for months *.*.. I think it might become available around release day, but not for very long..  I guess I better place  order on Under Defeat soon if I want the LE..

Yeah, AmiAmi is good on being specific on bonuses, unlike maybe sites that can’t guarantee and give you a maybe.. what’s the point of pre-ordering if you won’t know getting the bonus or not..

Wonder if the 3D effect is visible during gameplay.. for the Dreamy Theater 2, you can only see 3D mode when watching the videos, not during gameplay..

  • thaKingRocka

This makes me wonder what ever happened to Zero Gunner 2.

    • FX102A

I was thinking the exact same thing, I loved that game though thankfully my friend is a huge Schmup fan and has tonnes of Japanese titles so I’ve been able to play both titles on the Dreamcast. I just found ZG2 that little bit more enjoyable as I loved the circle mechanic and I spent half the time naming all the aircraft that appeared.

      • thaKingRocka

Zero Gunner 2′s core mechanics were so fun. I actively avoided it in arcades for a while because I knew the DC version would release soon back in the day and I wanted to save my coins for the purchase. I would happily buy it again in whatever form they make it available.

    • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

Zero Gunner 2 is absolutely superb T3T; strangely I’ve run into a lot of shmup fans who know Under Defeat but not Zero Gunner 2. Agree with FX102A below too, the mechanics in it were really well done o3o.

  • Exand

A bit pricey for a HD remake, no?

    • Aoshi00

Game in Jpn always are, MGS 2/3 and PW HD remakes are about $65 & $70 separately in Jpn, here we get both for $50 (recently on sale for $30).. and SotC and Ico were also sold separately for about $50 each here we have both for $40 together.. so yeah, Jpn gamers wish they have the same pricing as the US too, even HD remakes.. unfortunately their game prices are higher, for us importing w/ this bad exchange rate, even more so. If people like the original games enough though like the MGS or Ico Collection, they would think it’s worth it even if it’s just remake.. but yeah, it’s pricey in Jpn, glad we’re not living in Jpn right? This is still cheaper than the original Dreamcast game anyway..

      • Exand

I’m not talking about price compared to elsewhere, I’m comparing them to prices of other HD games.

On release ICO / SotC HD pack was ¥4,990.
Metal Gear 2/3 HD was ¥5,490.
        MH3P HD was ¥4,800.

So this IS on the pricey side especially when you consider several of those HD packs have two games, not just one…

An used Dreamcast disc of the game sells for ¥8,000+, so that’s probably why they’re pricing it so high. Which is probably a mistake…

        • Aoshi00

Well, on Amazon Jpn now, the Ico/SotC pack is 7,980
yen (~$106), separately they are 3,980 yen each,

          http://www.amazon.co.jp/ICO-%E3%83%AF%E3%83%B3%E3%83%80%E3%81%A8%E5%B7%A8%E5%83%8F-Limited-Box-%E7%89%B9%E8%A3%BD%E3%83%96%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%80%81%E3%83%97%E3%83%AD%E3%83%80%E3%82%AF%E3%83%88%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E5%90%8C%E6%A2%B1/dp/B0054I9ZHW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322253207&sr=8-3

PW is an HD remake of a PSP game at 4980 yen (~$66)

          http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%A1%E3%82%BF%E3%83%AB%E3%82%AE%E3%82%A2-%E3%83%94%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC-%E3%82%A8%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A7%E3%83%B3-PSP%E7%89%88%E3%80%8C%E3%83%A1%E3%82%BF%E3%83%AB%E3%82%AE%E3%82%A2%E3%82%BD%E3%83%AA%E3%83%83%E3%83%89-%E3%83%94%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC%E3%80%8D%E3%83%80%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E5%90%8C%E6%A2%B1/dp/B005JA4Q9M/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1322253354&sr=1-1

          and MGS 2/3 is 5480 yen (~$73)

Under Defeat regular ed is 5600 yen (~$75), so it sounds like w/in the same range of normal price of Jpn games..  unless you’re talking about a shmup remake should be priced considerably lower than HD remakes of other games.  But in terms of Jpn game prices it’s actually not that high at all.

If you’re comparing to US prices though, there’s no comparison, SotC/Ico is $40 here, MGS HD Collection is $50 and if Under Defeat HD remake ever gets a US release, it might be $30 for regular and $50 limited edition like Otomedius Excellent.

          • Exand

Most gamers I know in Japan don’t buy new release video games from Amazon… I know I certainly don’t. The prices on Amazon JP aren’t very good on new release games for starters. Later on in a games life cycle they do get cheaper though, but it’s still usually cheaper just to go to a smaller store (or local big box store).

And you sort of missed the point about more than one game in HD packs…

Even the almighty MH3P HD was ¥1,000 cheaper on release.

And all media in Japan is expensive. CD’s are grossly expensive, so are movies. That’s why Bluray is so slow to take off in Japan while it’s rapidly gained ground in North America. DVD’s still rein supreme in Japan, which is a little ironic when you think about it.

          • Aoshi00

Yes, I was using MSRP for everything in Jpn and the US. Actually Amazon Jpn has quite a big discount on many new releases sometimes as deep as 25-30% and that’s free shipping w/in Jpn.  That’s how I got my Saint Seiya movie blu-ray box set, for about 12,500 yen (MSRP 17,850 yen before discount) compared to over $200 in other places, I know, still crazy expensive. And frankly it deserves better packaging (no complaints about the 5.1 sound and crystal clear picture though, sad that animation today is not as good as 20 years ago, the 4 movies from 1987-89 are still amazing, but not the 2004 Tenkai-hen jyosou movie) One can’t import games from Amazon Jpn anyway, they don’t ship games outside of Jpn.

That’s why I said everything is priced higher in Jpn, be it games (shmp or non-shmup), DVD/blu-rays, etc, so it’s no surprise.  If you’re comparing discounted prices though, then Jpn gamers could certainly score some really good deals even buying used from Book Off or other vendors, which is practically like new there.

If we talk about on sale prices, then SotC/Ico has been going for $24.99 in many stores in the last several weeks, and MGS2/3/PW 3 games together is only $29.99 here too, making them dirt cheap compared to Jpn prices.

So yeah, Under Defeat is 5,600 yen MSRP, should be cheaper in Jpn w/ store discounts or credit, so you would be satisfied if it were say 1000 yen lower at 4,600 yen then?  That’s still over $60 in US dollars. I’m not sure why you bring up the high Jpn price for games time and again, unless you want to tell all the Jpn game companies to change their pricing scheme.. all of their games & movies have crazy prices by our standard, even more so to those importing from the US based on the current exchange rates.

          • superdry

One reason some gamers don’t buy from Amazon is they don’t offer any store exclusives.  Most stores I’ve been to in Japan charge MSRP, but the bonuses are sometimes really enticing that it makes up for the higher price you pay compared to Amazon (game discount is usually 15%).

Maybe Blu-Ray as a whole hasn’t taken off in Japan, but it’s got the lockdown on the anime market.

Under Defeat for 5600 yen?  Sure, it’s more expensive than other HD remake games, but there’s all kinds of price disparity, within reason, in Japan.

        • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

It’s likely just a mixture of high Japanese Yen, and it’s a shmup which are usually priced high, remake or not. Plus the other possibility is it might be a fairly limited print of the game, like Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweet’s from Cave last March. Which only makes the price go up o3o;; But ¥5,600 isn’t what I’d consider unusual from my shopping experience, pretty average honestly.

I generally don’t think Team ICO, and MGS Collection are good comparisons for this, if nothing else because of the size of the companies.

Under Defeat for ps3 Awesome Another Great Game !!!

  • venomryu

yes more dreamcast games never heard of this one

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

Is it REALLY a masterpiece? I was under the impression that the most notable thing about Under Defeat was that it was a Dreamcast game that came out after the console had called it quits, so to speak. It’s not like we’re talking about….I dunno, Ikaruga here, are we?

    • mikanko

Depends on who you ask.  I like UD more than Ikaruga, but it’s a different style of shooter.

It’s a bit more simplistic, and straightforward than some of the more recent 2d shooters out there.  While it can certainly be challenging to make it through on 1cc, and aim for a high score it doesn’t decide to fill the screen with large curtains of bullets for you to dodge.  If you just want to fly something and shoot crap up making explosions, it’s really really good at that.

the artwork reminds me of Valkyria Chronicles :P
